Designers are using ever more inventive ways to conjure up beautiful-looking workspaces. Bland is rarely a source of inspiration for anyone. So believes interior designer Tom Fox, owner of Fox-Nahem Design, who recently redesigned Robert Downey Jr.'s sustainable Malibu home. 

Part living room, part home office, this imaginative space can be described as futurism meets modern comfort. The aim was to craft a space that inspired innovation, individuality, and better design, and the end result is a celebration of craft and creativity.

Over the past few years, those of us lucky enough to have a dedicated room in which to shut ourselves away have gratefully recognized the peaceful retreat they provide. However, as working from home is now the norm for many of us, we are thinking about the aesthetics of these spaces. But how to add beauty to what is, after all, a functional space? It can be done.

‘Your design approach to a home office is not unlike any other room in the house,’ says interior designer Athena Calderone. ‘It should speak your visual language. Remember it is a delicate dance between aesthetics and utility, designed to motivate you each day but also be grounded in practicality.'

Soothing colors, such as greens and blues, will offer tranquillity and that all-important link to the outside. However, while these gentle, calming shades suit bedrooms and bathrooms, it pays to be bold in a home office. 

Color plays a significant role in our mood and productivity, so choosing the right home office paint color scheme is essential. ‘There are no golden rules about what color to decorate a home office. If you mostly work at a computer and have a lamp on your desk, then don’t be afraid of darker colors. Rich reds and greens, even dark blues, are very traditional and can look smart, but I would avoid any strong patterns or really bright colors as they will be distracting,’ explains designer Susan Deliss. 

If you rely on daylight for your work or naturally gravitate towards lighter hues, then let your surroundings inspire your home office scheme. With plenty of natural light flowing through the fluid-shaped window, which also brought green tints from the garden into the room, a predominantly black and white scheme, punctuated with vibrant hints of orange provides the perfect burst of energy for this study. Indoor spaces tend to be orthogonal by design – homes are often boxes with harsh lines. But in the world of interior architecture, curves are making moves, softening right angles, and introducing sculptural lines to straightforward layouts.

'For this celebrity home, the actor's principles are just as important as his design sensibilities,' says Megan Slack, head of celebrity style at Homes & Gardens. 'As interest in famous people's homes grows, I can definitely see an increase in celebrities choosing to build and design homes largely based on their values.

Though Downey Jr. is among the first to embrace the innovative home style, it's easy to imagine how current economic and social conditions could quickly turn the Binishells home into a real estate trend. With home prices up 47% since early 2020 despite stagnating wages, an out-of-the-box house that costs half as much could become much more alluring to Americans, especially first-time home buyers. Increased anxiety about the climate crisis might also draw interest in sustainable technologies like Binishells, which seem like a more environmentally efficient alternative to traditional housing.

Downey Jr.'s combination of rose-toned marble and ornate mosaic tiles creates an uber-luxe bathroom aesthetic, but as Cantley explains, we can experiment with different forms and stones to create a textured bathroom that works for our home.

'I start by selecting the marble and with so many available options, you need to decide on how much movement you want. This is a very personal decision, as there is no right or wrong. (This is also my favorite part of my job.) I love to mix marble with handmade tiles for their versatile impact. Mixing marbles is very fun and gives an immediate old-world feel,' she says.

'A beautiful Rojo marble mixed with limestone is very special, or using a citron or black marble creates a spectacular look. My advice is always to have fun with mixing textures in bathrooms and be as daring as you and your budget allows.'

Similarly, for a Downey Jr.-inspired starting point, Courtney Cole, an interior designer at Yabby, recommends pairing marble and tiles – a combination with a dramatic impact. However, we need to decorate with caution.

'Because marble and tile are both polished-looking materials, it can be easy to think they can be used together and they’ll suit each other immediately. Well, this isn’t actually the case – there are different ways they need to be used together to make sure they suit,' she comments.

'Marble has natural veining and is smooth, which makes it a great choice to pair with textured tiles for visual interest. Taking advantage of the smoothness of marble and the tactile quality of textured tiles will make it so each material will highlight the other materials' qualities – making the bathroom seem more dynamic and less streamlined.'

'Curved furniture can help make the most of the space in a dining room. A curved or round table can fit more chairs than a normal table of the same size,' Steele explains. 'This makes it a great choice for both small and large dining areas, as it makes the most of the space without making it feel cramped.'

Plus, whether we introduce curved furniture to our dining room or kitchen, Steele says these cornerless pieces have the power to 'improve the room's traffic flow' – something that is welcome in homes of every size.

'This is because the lack of corners naturally guides movement through the room, which is great for functionality and aesthetics. An added bonus is that if you have children, the lack of corners will be a big change for the accessibility and child-proofing of your home.'

Lichtenstein goes on about the organic modern space: 'Downey’s home is a striking example of architecture “derived from nature and not imposed upon it.” The entryway, with its “sinuous shadows and delicate details,” encapsulates this philosophy perfectly. The white interior walls and oval skylight create a light-filled environment that feels both expansive and intimate. The skylight, along with the organically shaped front door, echos the natural curves of the entire structure, making the transition from outside to inside almost seamless.'

Beyond the door, a divider made up of blue, gray/green, white, yellow, and black repeating organic shapes offers both privacy and openness, striking a delicate balance that defines the space.

She adds, 'This divider, with its wave-like undulating form, adds another splash of color and introduces a sense of organic motion into the room. It divides the space, giving each area its own unique feel while maintaining the airy, open atmosphere. The screen’s design ensures that the entryway feels expansive yet private, a harmonious blend that adds to the home’s overall aesthetic.'

As a designer, I find that blue is a frequently requested color among homeowners. Its ability to adapt to various styles – from coastal chic to modern minimalism – makes it a go-to for many projects,' she continues.

Chris Reinke, vice president of research and development for doors at Masonite, says that a blue front door can be 'a simple yet impactful way to set the tone for a peaceful atmosphere even before entering the house.' He suggests Sherwin-Williams' 2024 color of the year, Upward, for a 'serene and welcoming first impression for your home.'

'This breezy blue creates a feeling of tranquility and relaxation, setting the tone for a peaceful atmosphere even before entering the house,' he continues. Kallos adds that aside from celebrity homes, the combination of very pale blue front door shades and bright white home exteriors is having a moment for designers and homeowners across the board.

'It gives the door a little character but remains soothing and is tonal with the white main body. An Aleutian or darker shade Downing Slate front door is equally beautiful, with the mid-toned blues giving your door a little more pop, pulling it out of the shadows of a welcoming front porch. Going darker, Sherwin-Williams Loyal Blue or their almost black Navel give your door some interest and depth while not hitting you over the head with it,' says Kallos.

'I believe that blue symbolizes hope. Powdery blues like Craig & Rose’s Pompadour and Fresco Blue evoke the promise of a new day. Blues will lean towards softer, warmer, and more muted tones, providing a sense of gentle comfort needed for the year ahead,' says Flora Hogg, interior designer and color consultant for Craig & Rose.

Hogg adds that the color family represents 'both bodies of water and the vast skies, making it a color that resonates with everyone.' It fits in easily alongside greenery, landscaping, and natural materials like brick and stone, making for a straightforward and beginner-friendly exterior design scheme.

Moszczynski recommends taking a look around the neighborhood before making the leap – though it's lovely to express yourself through your home's design, standing out from the crowd too much can detract from the look.

'I'd recommend blue for the front door and other exterior features if it complements the overall style and color scheme of the house. It can add a refreshing pop of color and create visual interest without overwhelming the facade. However, it's essential to consider factors such as the architectural style of the home, surrounding landscape, and neighborhood aesthetics before making a decision. If your neighbors are all neutral, it might look out of place,' says Moszczynski.

'I love the serene pop of blue against the weathered gray exterior – the color combination is a classic look for the Hamptons and, thanks also to the windmill element, this home feels equal parts traditional and whimsical. In general, light blue is always in style and it can also be paired nicely with shades of white or beige, as well as with other shades of blue,' says Kathy.

'Consider drawing on the natural environment and choosing tones which mimic the setting such as sky blue or forest green, as this not only adds familiarity and comfort to the home but complements nature rather than distracting from it,' says Helen.

From a selling standpoint, Michael adds that this serene shade is 'often associated with trust and stability' – qualities that make homebuyers feel at ease. Plus, pulling the color throughout the home's entire exterior (as seen on the windowpanes, balcony and staircase of Robert's home) 'enhances the overall aesthetic appeal of the property,' he says.

'[It] further strengthens the visual unity and can make the home appear more thoughtfully designed and maintained. This consistency can be very appealing to buyers, as it reflects a well-coordinated and aesthetically pleasing environment,' says Michael. 'A light blue front door, along with matching elements like stairs and window frames, can significantly enhance curb appeal and potentially improve the marketability of a property by creating a calm, inviting, and visually cohesive exterior.'

His real home, designed by Fox-Nahem Associates, is a riot of color, pattern, and creative furniture layouts. A contemporary, playful space, the actor's home embraces one of my favorite kitchen seating ideas to date – corner seats that prioritize conversation, and make the most of an underused space.

The kitchen is the central hub of the home – a place to eat, cook, socialize, work, rest, and play for the whole family. As physical barriers between these separate rooms merge into one, a functional and comfortable kitchen seating area (with or without a table) is a must-have feature.

Introducing architectural features in a cooking space is also one of the best ways to make a kitchen look expensive. Sometimes the obvious wall for a run of cabinetry ends at a window. Rather than abruptly stopping the sweep of furniture, with wasted space at the end, Kasia Piorko, founder of Kate Feather, suggests making a feature of the area with a window seat. ‘Soft seating in a kitchen is always desirable,’ she says. ‘Creating a spot to look out of the window onto the garden brings calmness to the design.’

One of the big surprises in an open-plan room can be just how little space you need to add to gain enough useable room for a dining area in your existing kitchen – often a mere matter of feet is all you need to fit a compact solution such as banquette or bench-style seating.

Banquette seating comes into its own when space is at a premium, for three practical reasons. Firstly, you can fit more people on a bench than on individual chairs. Secondly, it is positioned against a wall, therefore reducing the overall footprint of the dining area as you do not need a thoroughfare on one side of the table. Finally, if you don't quite have the same amount of space as Downey Jr., you can design the banquette with storage underneath – perfect for housing bulky appliances and other paraphernalia. On a decorative note, a beautifully executed banquette can be used to introduce artwork, color and pattern.'

Don't be afraid of using bold and darker colors, especially in bigger spaces. It makes the room feel more intimate in the evenings, particularly during the summer when doors and windows are open. Avoid using too much white as it can be too startling and won't create the inviting and relaxing space that you've planned for.

We've talked endlessly about Oscar-winning actor Robert Downey Jr.'s home, designed by Nicolò Bini, being an environmentally conscious, modern masterpiece. The outdoor space is certainly no exception but, privacy and shade were a consideration that needed to be met.

In an ideal world, our gardens and homes would be private sanctuaries where we can potter, entertain, and relax away from prying eyes. Yet, for many homeowners, the reality is quite different – get it wrong and you can often feel like you are living in a goldfish bowl because there is nothing to screen your plot from passersby and neighboring windows. A clever combination of garden screening ideas and plants for privacy can make all the difference. 

Making a garden or home more private may seem daunting, but that doesn't mean you must accept that your home will be overlooked forever. There are plenty of ways to improve privacy and shade without resorting to tall fences, walls, and oversized hedges that can leave you feeling like you're boxed in. 

Landscape designer, Ana Saavedra, used her expertise to create shade, privacy, and outstanding beauty using simple, clever planting choices and techniques to ensure that the home, which Downey Jr. shares with his wife Susan Downey, isn't overlooked yet remains at one with its surroundings. For Saavedra, it was important to ensure that Robert Downey Jr.'s garden was his own peaceful haven rather than a fortress of solitude. 

While fencing played a large part in the screening, the planting is the standout feature in this space. The green leaves contrast well with white and give the design an elegant, contemporary look. For structure and height, architectural green olive trees (phillyrea latifolia) will provide year-round color, and the other plants were chosen for their different leaf shades and shapes. These dense, dark evergreens produce a crown like broccoli. Tough, expensive-looking, and long-lived, they can grow 20ft after 25 years, so it will need regular pruning to keep them at a desired height. If you want it to grow faster, water it. It is as simple as that. The planting is deliberately lush and dense, but more sparse beneath the olive trees, allowing textured gravel and mulch to show through.

The silver-green foliage of the olive tree is evergreen, providing year-long interest, as well as the trunk of older specimens appearing knotted and twisted. While it is a drought-tolerant tree, ideally suited to hot and dry climates, some varieties can be more tolerant of a cooler climate. 

Clipped evergreens are another alternative for creating structure, architectural interior and privacy in a backyard. Choose lollipop bay trees, smart box balls and pompom conifers to add strong shapes that help to define spaces. Topiary is also low-maintenance and looks good all year round.

When choosing the best shrubs for privacy you'll mostly be landscaping with evergreens due to their year-round foliage screen, but that's not to say that you can't still include some deciduous shrubs among the planting. Try to envisage how the combination of shrubs will look throughout the year – some will add differing colors, flowers, or perhaps seasonal fruit and berries.

'Succulents, including cacti, do extremely well in California,' Jeanie continues, and most people just plant them and then don't have to maintain them... they simply thrive.' In addition, 'yucca, euphoria and various ornamental kinds of grass are a common sight in people's back and front yards.'

2. Hardwearing deck

Over the years, deck usage has expanded, and it has become the go-to material for a contemporary patio or terrace. Materials have also come into their own. The early decks were made out of first-generation hardwoods, now it's hard-wearing composites and eco products made of recycled materials that are all the rage for backyards. We are also experimenting with stains and widths to give the wood a very contemporary feel.

At its best, a timber deck is a handsome, hard-wearing surface that complements most garden settings. It’s a natural material that provides a sympathetic background to plants, blending beautifully with water, stone and trees. Timber lends itself to different styles of architecture and design. A deck can be designed in a smart, contemporary look, as easily as in a more traditional style.

'For a front yard, we like to hold back on too much color for a more welcoming and sophisticated look,' comments Amy Hovis of Eden Garden Design. 'We love using the varied shades of greens and silvers with whites, and occasionally one color splash.'

Homeowners want to create a sense of escapism through landscape-inspired forms. We expect to see an increased appetite for decorating with earthy tones, organic shapes, and natural textures especially those grounded in sustainability.'

'Green is also a color that reflects light well, which helps keep the interior of your home cooler in the summer months,' Matt explains. However, with its perennial curb appeal benefits, we can rest easy knowing that this hue will impress around the calendar – and with Robert Downey Jr.'s (unintentional) endorsement, how can we disagree?

In a conversation with The New York Times Style Magazine, the actor described his elaborate vision for the home as a 'a crucible of faith'. The property, also known as a Binishell, is a form that originated in 1964 by Dante Bini. The celebrated Italian designer discovered that by topping a nylon-coated neoprene air bladder with wet steel-reinforced concrete, he could make a durable thin-shell bungalow. 

Downey’s Binishell was designed by the creator’s son, Nicolò, a Beverly Hills-based architect who’s reimagining his father’s innovation. The final look is a humble home that aims to cocoon and comfort – a far cry from the fictional home he shared with his advanced personal A.I., J.A.R.V.I.S in Iron Man.

Despite its unusual, futuristic architecture, Downey's Binishell living room embraces a minimalist yet warm aesthetic. The look is easier than you think to achieve, claims Meik Wiking, CEO of the Happiness Research Institute.

'Instead of filling the empty room with what might be standard for a room – a light fixture on the ceiling, paintings on the wall, chairs, or a couch – start with what you would like that room to give you,' he says. 'It is a more humanistic approach that puts you as a person at the core of the space.'

You'll be surprised by how little you need in your home in order to create a happy environment. In this busy modern world, having a restful sanctuary to return to has never been more important, so it’s no wonder that homeowners are turning to the principles of minimalism and creating pared-back spaces perfect for switching off and unwinding. 

A minimalist living room scheme, similar to Downey's, is rooted in the principle of ridding your home of clutter. It is about harnessing the power of a 'clean' space that not only reduces eye strain but is restful, contemporary, and budget-friendly.

This hue has shaped the most beautiful of homes for years, starting with traditional farmhouse-style spaces but also serving as the basis for a modern minimalist aesthetic – and it's found its latest admirer in the shape of Robert Downey Jr.

The actor, who resides in a 19th-century windmill house in NY's East Hampton, celebrates a color palette that is just as fashionable today as it was at the time of his home's construction. 'White is a classic color, it's timeless,' notes designer Leigh Ann Raines. 'We've seen loads of white kitchens through the centuries, and yet, they still tend to feel charming and current. Just ensure you don't pair the hue with anything that screams of a particular era (such as dated light fixtures or old – but there's an easy fix for those).'

Leigh Ann explains that this tone translates to the full spectrum of architecture and interior styles – from farmhouse decor to a contemporary minimalist aesthetic. 'White modern tones are always going to be relevant in modern California architecture (or anywhere else, of course). Whatever the style, however, it's worth noting that white is best used in a more simplistic aesthetic. It's the natural base for simple, elegant, casual, natural, and comfortable modern design.'

'White will never look stark when the right balance of materials and textures is layered throughout the space in proportions that are soothing and welcoming. This kitchen color isn't going anywhere – it's always an option with a pop of color or a contrasting neutral.'
