'The space (pictured above) was originally intended for built-in cabinetry,' begins Zoe Crooks, Principal of JD Ireland Design, 'but without a collection to display or a real need for additional storage, why add more stuff?! Instead, we saw an opportunity to create an intimate seating area that offers a different way to enjoy the living room.'

'The mirror reflects light and adds depth, while the banquette and table make it the perfect spot for coffee, conversation, or an evening cocktail. Carved out of the larger space, the nook feels like its own little destination – cozy and inviting, with a personality and purpose all its own, yet still connected to the rest of the room.'

2. Tiny Tables

Mini stools, side tables, and ottomans may feel like they all serve the same purpose, but for the latest living furniture trends in hardworking living rooms, each puts in the work. From a spot to rest your drink to a place to prop your feet after a long day, these charming pieces aren't just practical; they create a layered, lived-in feel in our living spaces.

'I love a room that feels like the furniture has been collected rather than purchased as a matching set,' explains designer Hollie Velten of SPACES by Hollie Velten. 'Little stools and ottomans are a great way to play with scale, shape, and personality without adding another big piece of furniture. I especially love the relationship between the smaller pieces and the larger upholstered furniture. Something is so charming about these little characters gathered around a room, and they make the space feel a bit more relaxed and less formally arranged.'

'I love the idea of a room having a few unexpected little moments rather than everything being perfectly scaled and coordinated. A tiny stool beside an oversized chair, or a funny little ottoman tucked into a corner, can bring so much more life to a space than another conventional side table,' Hollie adds.

3. Mixing Eras

Decorating with vintage is one of the most impactful ways to make a living room feel personal, layered, and most of all, full of character and story. While designers have long relied on preloved gems to inject charm into schemes, in 2027, it's all about using a balance of old and new to create a truly unique look.

Think a splash of midcentury modern, with a little Victorian, and then a pinch of Art Deco thrown in. 'The key is layering,' advises Lauren Sullivan, Founder & Curator of Well x Design and Well Found. 'Pair antiques with clean-lined upholstery, incorporate negative space, and allow one or two strong vintage pieces to be the focus rather than filling a room with them. Contrast is what makes older pieces feel relevant.'

She continues, 'I like to think about form and integrity first – not just patina or age. A beautifully proportioned antique next to a modern light fixture or contemporary art instantly feels current. Vintage decorating works best when it feels collected over time rather than recreated from a single moment in history. The goal isn’t to replicate the past –it’s to let it inform the present in a way that feels intentional and alive.'

4. Warm, Saturated Neutrals

Neutrals may have taken a backseat in recent years, but as we crave comfortable, liveable spaces that last beyond fleeting trends, they're making a welcome return to living rooms in 2027.

While sometimes a room needs a good white paint for balance and airiness, we don't mean we're going back to the era of all-white rooms lacking soul. This year, we're embracing warm neutrals from every end of the spectrum; think burnt rusts, deep coffee browns, and orange-infused ambers that balance warmth and richness.

'Echoes of the 1970s continue to be seen in the latest color trends,' says Helen Shaw, Director of Marketing (International) at Benjamin Moore. 'Earthy oranges, terracottas and amber hues recall retro interiors, sun-faded fabrics, and the golden glow of vintage photography. When paired with grounded greens, bark browns and deep reds, these tones feel enveloping, mood-lifting and timelessly stylish – a contemporary revival of an iconic era.'

5. Jacquard & Tapestry Fabrics

From tapestry decor to jacquard upholstery, time-worn, embroidered fabrics bring warmth and richness to living rooms. Beautiful beside neutral tones and organic materials, these artisanal fabrics are loved for their rich texture and historic feel.

'I think jacquards add a depth to a room as an alternative to a true solid,' says interior designer Dafna Kikuchi, founder of Daf & Co. 'I think people are craving more soulful interiors and jacquard can lend more of a storied feel to a space without being stuffy.'

'We started with the English roll arm sofa that the client actually already owned (pictured above). When I got my hands on it, the shape was classic, but the fabric was a white performance linen. We agreed to reuse the sofa but to recover it in one of my favourite floral Decore Barbares fabrics.'

'From there, I continued to layer my infinite patterned fabrics and source a mix of vintage and modern shapes,' Dana explains. 'The client was very trusting but did request we add a solid, and that is how I positioned the beautiful olive green Soane jacquard. To me, a tonal jacquard acts like a more interesting cousin to a solid. It's not as loud as a pattern, but it doesn’t fade away either; it creates balance with all the other fabrics in the scheme.'

6. Fluid, Low-Slung Shapes

Low-slung, relaxed shapes make our living rooms feel laid-back, casual, and effortlessly cozy. Think curved-back chairs, low-level coffee tables, and modular sectionals.

'I think there’s a real appetite for interiors that feel comfortable and lived-in, rather than overly polished or formal,' interior designer Laura Stephens says. 'Lower furniture and softer, more relaxed shapes help create that feeling, making a room feel less rigid and more inviting. They can also be a lovely way to balance a more traditional property, as we have done here (above), with something contemporary and informal.'

'I also think lower furniture can bring a really interesting sense of proportion to a room,' Laura continues. A low coffee table creates a stronger horizontal line, which can help ground the seating area, while allowing the eye to travel across the room and appreciate the wider scheme. I particularly like the contrast between low, sculptural pieces and more traditional architectural details, as it stops a space from feeling too formal or predictable. It’s about balancing height, scale and silhouette to create a room that feels both considered and comfortable.'

'A low, informal coffee table works beautifully with this approach. It keeps the overall feel laid-back, allows the other pieces in the room to shine, and makes the seating area feel like somewhere you can really put your feet up and relax.'

7. Symmetry Is Back

The perfect living room layout depends on the size of your space and the pieces you have; however, if you choose one formula to follow this year, focus on creating as much symmetry as possible.

'Symmetry gives the eye a place to rest,' designer Sydney Jackson states. 'When you're taking in a room as a whole, your brain doesn't have to process two entirely different things if they're a matching pair. At the same time, using a pair of chairs, ottomans, or even lamps can give those pieces a stronger presence than they might have individually. I don't tend to design spaces that feel too pristine or perfectly composed. I love rooms that are layered, collected, and a little unexpected. But introducing moments of symmetry within that mix can be really grounding,' Sydney explains. 'It creates a sense of calm and intention that allows the more eclectic elements to shine.'

'There is already a lot going on visually in this room (above) from an architectural standpoint – the painted built-ins, exposed wood beams, and long row of windows – so I wanted the furniture arrangement to feel intentional rather than introduce more visual noise. A pair of matching chairs instantly brings a sense of order and restraint to the space. Even the contrasting sofa cushions echo that idea of a matching pair, creating a subtle sense of balance without everything feeling too coordinated.'

8. Color-Drenched Shelving

Color-drenched shelving is replacing boring white built-ins in living rooms for 2027 and beyond. From rooms wrapped in color to alcoves fitted with statement shelving, this colorful bookshelf trend invites playfulness to living room storage.

'Using color in shelving and joinery can really lift a space, and because open shelving is packed with books and objects, a really bright color is slightly diffused, and not as overpowering as simply painting a wall,' interior designer Rebecca Wakefield of Studio Fortnum says.

'A ‘feature wall’ can be quite a dated way to add color, so using it instead in joinery feels more contemporary and considered. Here, I used this color to punch through the more traditional colors and details in the house. I didn't want to completely color-drench the shelves, as it would have been too bold a statement in this home; instead, we used a palette of relatively ‘heritage’ colors like Farrow & Ball's Old White, which contrasted so well with the energetic orange and made the house feel alive and vibrant.'

Not every home requires a sprawling kitchen. In fact, some of the most stylish spaces are more compact, making the most of the smaller proportions. These more modest kitchens make the smaller details count, turning something seemingly ordinary into something much more design-focused. So, while most people extend or relocate the kitchen in an older property, the owners of this Georgian-Revival home kept the original location and footprint.

The result? A small kitchen that feels warm, cozy, and full of charming details. Inspired by the architecture and traditional features, the designers have completely transformed the kitchen into a high-functioning yet effortlessly stylish space, filled with thoughtful details and custom features. It proves you don't need much space to create a standout design.

Totally Tile Kitchen Walls for Traditional Function

Historically, kitchen walls were tiled from floor to ceiling for a truly functional space – and it's now become an unexpected way to give these surfaces interest and dimension.

It's a design decision that instantly creates a more textured finish in this kitchen. 'We were inspired by the exterior of the building as we reimagined the kitchen. The Georgian Revival brick facade has a lot of Roman arches, which we echoed in the tiled arched openings throughout the kitchen,' says Mira Eng-Goetz, Lead Designer at Jessica Helgerson Interior Design.

The tiles could have stopped at the arches, but it felt more in keeping with the home's architecture to extend them far beyond. 'Kitchens in stately homes have traditionally been tiled from floor to ceiling for good reason. They’re workrooms that get messy, so they need durable, cleanable surfaces. The handmade ceramic wall tiles we chose are flat, smooth, and glossy – perfect for wiping down. The deckled edges and crazed cream-colored glaze give the tiled walls character and warmth.'

Play With Open Storage Styles for a Lived-In Look

There's always a lot of debate around how much open kitchen storage you should have, but the best designs cater to how the homeowner really uses their space. And for this client, a chef who likes to see and easily access everything she needs, a larger proportion of open storage became the more practical choice. But it also became a design feature, with much of the storage doubling as decorative details.

The open shelving adds a collected feel, while brass rails create a subtle elegance. 'Our client has an extensive collection of kitchen tools that she likes to access from a rail and hook system. In front of the windows, she hangs all sorts of items such as tea strainers, scissors, drying herbs, spools of baker’s twine – objects that are both functional and joyful to look at,' Mira explains.

The focus on open storage meant she had to get creative with the large appliances. 'The standout feature is the 48” wide panel-ready Sub-Zero refrigerator, which sits quietly behind mirrored doors in the short hall between the kitchen and the breakfast room,' she adds. 'It was such a challenge figuring out how to fit this fridge into such a modest kitchen layout, and the solution required a lot of creativity. It’s always rewarding when we think outside the box and land on a solution that brings unexpected delight.'

Design a Kitchen Island Appropriate for the Room's Scale

It's not unusual for a kitchen island to be left out in smaller spaces. But for a chef who prefers a dedicated work zone close to storage, appliances, and the sink, a freestanding island was essential. And to create a proportionate design that still allowed plenty of walk space, a narrower island was chosen, which not only maximized the small space, but also added a traditional detail that felt perfect for the home.

'The kitchen’s footprint is quite narrow (limited by an existing staircase that we opted to keep). We asked our client to cook in the kitchen for a few weeks before deciding if she wanted an island. In this way, she could decide if her workflow would be helped or hindered by a piece of furniture in the middle of the room,' Mira recalls. 'After just a few days, it became clear that a narrow island was the right solution. The island is a custom piece by Egg Collective with a travertine top.'

Use Kitchen Flooring to Add Interest and Historic Style

A white kitchen requires some contrast to feel warm and lived-in. Rather than relying on tonal variations to do the heavy lifting, Mira introduced patterned flooring to really bring the space to life. 'There’s an original checkered marble floor in the opposite wing of the house. Choosing a checkerboard floor for the kitchen created balance and continuity,' she explains.

Instead of using large-scale tile, smaller square tiles in groups of four were used. This not only adds more texture to the floor, but it instantly feels more traditional. It's a small detail, but it ensures the kitchen floor feels just as considered, not only as part of the kitchen, but as part of the historic architecture that gives the entire home charm.

Choose Kitchen Sink Materials to Soften a Small Space

A kitchen filled with tile can easily feel cold and hard, but softer details in this design ensure it remains warm and inviting. Beyond the natural wood details, the kitchen sink brings abundant texture and softness to the scheme, from the fluted detail to the sink skirt below.

'The sink is a custom concrete sink that matches the width of the window it’s under,' Mira explains. 'We added fluting to the front because this is a classic detail found in apron-front farm-style sink basins. We opted for a skirt below because it allows us to add a textile to a room without curtains. It’s important to juxtapose so many hard surfaces with a soft, tactile fabric.'

So whether you're hosting for the first time and need some trusted advice or simply need help to ensure your kitchen doesn't descend into chaos, here are the three things designers always remove from their kitchen before hosting, and what they replace them with instead.

1. Countertop Storage and Appliances

Those small countertop storage solutions and appliances that live out throughout the year are usually handy to have within reach, but when you're hosting, they create a more cluttered look and take up valuable surface space. Small appliances you are using can, of course, stay out, but everything else, like utensil crocks, should be removed.

'I love the ease of countertop utensil storage for everyday cooking, but a jar overflowing with cooking tools pulls the eye right to the stove. Moving it off the counter also frees up valuable space for setting out drinks, serving platters, and all the trimmings of a party. When you’re hosting, every inch of counter space counts,' explains interior designer Kathy Kuo.

'I’d get rid of the countertop clutter, especially items like utensil crocks, paper towel holders, and any small appliances,' adds interior designer Jennifer Hunter. 'When you’re hosting, the kitchen is already a hub of activity, and having every surface filled can make it feel chaotic before the party even begins. I’m a big believer that a kitchen should feel lived-in and layered, but there’s a difference between collected and cluttered.'

Once you've removed the small items and appliances that can easily read as clutter amid the hosting chaos, be intentional about what you add instead. For interior designers, it's usually one beautiful decor piece that elevates the kitchen without taking up lots of valuable surface space. 'I typically style a kitchen with a vintage bowl filled with seasonal fruit or a beautiful wooden cutting board leaned against the backsplash,' says Jennifer.

If you have space, decorative displays are equally beautiful. 'A good rule of thumb for hosting is that everything on the counter needs to add to the occasion. That could mean it’s functional or aesthetically pleasing, but it still needs a purpose,' Kathy advises. 'Tuck the everyday tools into a drawer and set out one beautiful vessel instead. A stoneware pitcher filled with fresh blooms or a few seasonal branches is always a welcome addition to the kitchen.'

2. Kitchen Island Clutter

If a kitchen island sits at the center of your space, it's probably the one place that requires the most attention. When you're hosting, it's the last place you want covered in clutter – it makes the whole room feel messier and hosting duties infinitely more difficult and disorganized.

'I recommend people remove all the clutter from their kitchen island when hosting to create a more calming environment. As we all now gather in the kitchen, I prefer to move the hosting setup to the perimeter when space allows,' says interior designer Shani Core.

Instead, utilize your perimeter countertops and create zones where hosting essentials naturally live in your kitchen for ease of access as well as a more visually harmonious space. 'In this kitchen, I used the area beneath a built-in China cabinet as a bar. Wine glasses sit atop a rattan tray, and an ice bucket is close by. A large vase with branches cut from the outside trees is all the kitchen island needs to welcome guests.'

3. Heavily Scented Candles

Hosting tips always include scent in one way or another, and a kitchen feels like the natural place to light a candle. But designers actually advise against any strong scents while you are cooking or while guests are dining.

'I love a candle, but a strong fragrance competes with the smell of the food and can even impact how dishes taste. Whenever you’re hosting, limit scented candles to bathrooms and living spaces separate from the food,' Kathy suggests. If you're set on scented candles, save them for after dinner, rather than before or during.

'Switch to unscented tapers in sculptural holders. You still get that warm, flickering glow that makes everyone want to linger, minus the aroma. Plus, tall tapers add varying heights to your kitchen display, which makes the whole spread look more dynamic and layered!'

Sometimes, it's the simplest swaps that make your kitchen a far calmer space for hosting. Consider the pieces in your kitchen that take up counter space or can easily read as clutter – they're usually the things that are best swapped out.

Designed to keep burning logs and embers contained in the hearth, fireplace fenders were once a staple in Victorian homes. As we continue to appreciate designs of the past, these characterful features are returning to every kind of living space in 2027, not just traditional living rooms.

'For this home (pictured above), we wanted the spaces to feel lived-in and collected,' says interior designer Laura W. Jenkins. 'We also wanted to give a nod to traditional interiors but with a twist. In that vein, all the materials that we selected were more traditional in nature but used in a somewhat whimsical way. For example, I love mixing rattan into rooms, it adds a bit of informality to a formal space, giving some relief to the upholstery.'

'For these chairs, we loved the Soane Britain Venus chairs, which are so charming and hold such a great presence,' Laura adds. 'For the fireplace, the fender adds an element of tradition but also of function. Much as it would have in the past, it helps protect kids and pets from the fire and also provides a perch if one needs to sit by the fire to warm up. I think the fender is both friendly to form and function and a nod to tradition. They also add another layer of decoration. Clients who want a fender are leaning into the more collected and lived-in spaces, and this gives the perfect little nod to history.'

2. Side Tables, Stools and Ottomans

Living room side tables are more than a place to rest your drink, they transform an empty corner into a thoughtful vignette. From plush ottomans to rustic stools, the tiny table trend brings whimsy and charm to our living rooms.

'The Queen Anne architecture gave us a beautiful starting point, but this is also a home for a family with four children, so the drawing room needed to feel comfortable and adaptable,' explain Sophie Eadie and Fi Crole of Eadie & Crole. 'With relatively little floor space, each piece had to contribute without making the room feel crowded. The pair of stools brings balance to the seating arrangement without closing it off. Their open metal frames allow you to see through to the rug, giving them a visual lightness that two more armchairs would have lacked. The curved ironwork also introduces a lovely contrast to the generous upholstery and traditional detailing.'

'We like furniture that allows a room to adapt. The stools can be drawn into a conversation or moved aside when more floor space is needed. They give the room flexibility while still feeling like considered, decorative pieces. We think their appeal will continue into 2027 because they offer a more flexible way of furnishing a living room.'

3. 'Old-Fashioned' Upholstery

'Old-fashioned' details once deemed fussy or kitsch are back better than ever in 2027. Think pleats, frills, and plenty of upholstery fringing.

'This is our client’s music room (pictured above),' interior designer Uns Hobbs explains, 'and we designed a bespoke corner bench seat where they could sit and play guitar or gather with friends when hosting. We wanted it to be comfortable and sociable, but with a touch of glamour too. The fringing adds a bit of wow factor and makes the bench seat more of a focal point. We kept the rest of the room quite neutral so that the upholstery and its detailing could take center stage. It’s a relatively simple shape, but the fringe gives it personality.'

'They are making a comeback, and I’m using them a lot in my projects,' adds Uns. 'I’ve always loved that slightly granny chic style, and details like pleating, fringing and skirts bring softness and playfulness to a room. I think people are drawn to interiors that feel warm, comfortable and full of character. These traditional details have a lovely familiarity to them, but changing the fabric, color, or scale can make them feel fresh. A fringe or skirt is also a great way to turn a simple piece of furniture into something a little more special.'

4. Gingham

From delicate fine prints to loud, large-scale patterns, gingham injects playful personality into living rooms. Gingham isn't the only nostalgic pattern making a return to upholstery and soft furnishings; vintage florals and heritage-inspired paisley bring similar doses of character.

In the living room pictured above, the bold gingham armchairs bring just the right amount of contrast against the warmer tones, as well as clashing with the finer floral weave of the rug. 'This is a drawing room in a young family’s home in St John’s Wood,' says interior designer Emily Janak. 'A pair of gingham chairs was exactly what we needed to keep the room feeling fresh and not too serious. Gingham is everlasting because it’s classic while also being graphic. It can be a great alternative to a floral and it’s forgiving with stains.'

'I see how people have a much stronger desire for things that have a real sense of human craftsmanship to them, and I think jacquard has that vital sense of heritage that people are valuing more and more in their homes,' says interior designer Eliza Dewbury.

'I feel strongly that a tapestry or jacquard doesn't have to feel old-fashioned or belong exclusively in a traditional country house. If used with contemporary furniture pieces and more playful color combinations, it can feel incredibly fresh and exciting,' Eliza adds.

'We were particularly conscious of wanting the room (pictured above) to feel incredibly soft and inviting and knew we wanted a large central coffee table or ottoman to anchor the furniture,' she explains. 'Whilst we toyed with the idea of introducing the natural character and richness of a material like marble or wood, we felt that an upholstered ottoman would bring much more softness and comfort to the space.'

'This Pierre Frey tapestry jacquard felt like the perfect compromise. The nature-inspired motifs, earthy palette, and woven texture gave us the sense of organic richness that we were drawn to in natural stone or wood, but with all the warmth and softness of an upholstered piece.'

7. Slipper Chairs

Slipper chairs may have once been dismissed as old-fashioned, but they're bringing real elegance and grace to living rooms this year. Not to mention, they're a refreshing choice for schemes that want flexibility without the bulk of a sectional.

'We chose slipper chairs in this entertaining room (pictured above) for a few reasons,' explains Emily Smoor, founder of Fantoush. 'Space was at a premium and slipper chairs have a nice compact footprint and the open armless style allowed more light to flow through from the bay window behind them. The other reason is that they are a very social chair! Their open shape means there are no physical barriers between people. In a space that is designed for socializing rather than watching television, they are perfect for conversation.'

'A slipper chair can be a very stylish thing,' Emily adds. 'What is nice about them is that they bring a nod of classic upholstery to a project but without the arms that often define a chair as traditional. The slipper chair is that sweet spot between traditional and modern that works in all sorts of interiors. As people start to make more considered interior buying decisions, they may be looking for pieces that they know will work for the long haul and slipper chairs have an ageless appeal because they can work in so many styles and locations. A well-designed slipper chair can be surprisingly comfortable and has the benefit of creating more seating without overpowering a smaller space. It's a win-win.'

The Living Room Furniture Edit

In 2027, living rooms are embracing all things characterful. The lower cabinets are finished in Argile Blanc de Meudon, with a Farrow & Ball Suffield Green border to each door and drawer front. The green is repeated on the tall units, the arched alcove and the window frames, which ties the kitchen into the wider scheme.'

'For 2027 lighting trends, we expect sculptural silhouettes, organic shapes, and interesting materials to continue to gain momentum. Hand-blown and textured glass, alabaster, ceramic, and beautifully patinated metals bring depth and character to a space, even when the lights are turned off.'

'Sculptural pieces that feel like art and bring in warmth are where lighting is heading,' agrees interior designer Alissa Johnson. 'Anything interesting stands out, and I often say that lighting is the jewelry of a space. It's easy to overlook, yet it's one of the first things you notice when you step into a living room.'

2. Handmade Vintage Styles

Vintage lighting steeped in charm is hitting living rooms big in 2027. From hand-woven rattan shades to delicate Art Deco styles that radiate luxury, preloved lighting brings an eclectic, slowly curated feel to living spaces.

'We love the renewed interest in lighting with a vintage or collected feel,' Ushi and Zoe say. 'Whether it's a Murano-inspired glass fixture, an oversized ceramic lamp, or a contemporary interpretation of a midcentury design, these pieces bring personality and a sense of history to a room.'

John Maloney McNamara of Coosa says vintage ceramic table lamps specifically will be everywhere in 2027. 'The chunky, oversized, earthy ones from the 1970s. Have one rewired, give it a new shade, and you have something that looks collected rather than like the same table lamp everyone else bought. Before you buy new, look at estate sales and vintage dealers.'

3. Layered Lighting Schemes

'In 2027, I think we’ll see even more emphasis on layered, atmospheric lighting rather than rooms filled with recessed lights,' says interior designer Trish Lynn of Colette Interiors. 'Sculptural floor lamps, understated sconces, picture lights, and warm aged finishes will make lighting feel integrated into the architecture and collected over time rather than overly coordinated.'

'I would start with the architecture and layer lighting at different heights,' Trish explains, 'perhaps sconces around a fireplace, picture lights over millwork, a floor lamp beside a reading chair, and a few table lamps throughout. The fixtures don’t need to match; I actually prefer when they feel related but collected, which gives a room much more character.'

4. Delicate Paper Shades

From pleated paper lampshades to almost see-through lantern lights, delicate, light-allowing paper lighting is expected to be in living rooms everywhere next year. 'A "timeless" trend in lighting that I think will continue well into 2027 is parchment lighting,' says Erica Vassalotti of Bergman Vass. 'Parchment, a material popular in the Art Deco period, is definitely seeing a resurgence lately along with the whole Art Deco style.'

'Parchment, while textured, is organic and neutral in nature. It adds a beautiful layer to any scheme,' Erica says. 'In this particular room (pictured above), we plastered the room to give the material a soft backdrop, which created a very relaxed atmosphere and a beautiful setting for mood lighting. Being semi-translucent, parchment reflects light in a stunning way. In the room, we designed layers of neutral, warm woods and varied tones of fabric to create a casual, cozy and inviting feel.'

5. The End of Recessed Lighting

Recessed lighting is slowly leaving our kitchens, so unsurprisingly, there's little room for it in our living spaces next year, either. While the big light debate is a little controversial, we're seeing the end of living rooms that rely on one overhead lighting source for illumination.

'I think we're going to see recessed lighting become smaller and less noticeable,' Amy Peltier of Peltier Interiors says. 'Can we make it disappear altogether? That's really the goal! More and more lighting manufacturers are jumping on this bandwagon, offering smaller, more streamlined fixtures that blend seamlessly into the ceiling. Recessed lighting is essential for general illumination, but it doesn't need to be a design feature. I'd much rather let the beautiful decorative lighting in a room take center stage.'

Instead of using one flush-mount or built-in ceiling light, creating individual pockets of light with lamps and sconces creates a far more inviting feel.

'There’s nothing like the magic of a room within a room. In the next year, we're going to see lighting used more intentionally to create smaller "rooms" within larger living rooms,' says interior designer Kelly Bartley. 'This could mean a dedicated reading corner or even a tiny under-the-stairs space.'

'A single wall sconce can turn an otherwise overlooked nook into its own little retreat, while still feeling part of the larger space,' adds Kelly. 'Unlike table lamps, wall sconces do not take up any horizontal real estate, so they're perfect for illuminating a tiny area, transforming it into a "private" space in a public room.'

'I think we’ll see more thoughtfully designed window nooks and built-in seating incorporated into living rooms in 2027,' agrees Brooke Mennen-Talsma of Brooke MT Interiors. 'Not only do they provide additional seating without taking up valuable floor space, but they’re an opportunity to introduce an unexpected pocket of light. I’m particularly drawn to custom upholstered window benches with wall-mounted lamps or sconces on each side. It creates a charming and intimate space within a larger room while adding another layer of functionality.'

This wasn't the usual transformation that starts with a dated, dingy scheme, but rather a case of different styles. 'The story behind this house is kind of wild. We'd fully designed it for a client who loved color, pattern, and bold tile. Then the house changed hands, and the new owners wanted the opposite: clean, minimal, nothing funky. So the kitchen became an exercise in creating impact with less,' designer and founder Amber Lewis recalls.

'We let the architecture and a handful of humble, beautifully textured materials do the heavy lifting: white oak, plaster, brick, stone, and blackened metal under rustic wood beams. It's warm, it has a little old-world soul, and it's edited within an inch of its life (in the best way).' Here's how she took a bold, colorful scheme and turned it into a calm yet beautifully layered neutral kitchen.

Infuse Warmth With Natural Materials

A pared-back, minimal kitchen doesn't have to be stark or boring. Tactile finishes and organic materials seamlessly replace bright colors and maximalist patterns, creating a warm, inviting kitchen that doesn't overwhelm. 'When you strip a room back to sleek cabinetry and pared-back surfaces, it can go cold and sterile fast. Natural materials are my secret weapon against that. Brick underfoot, tumbled stone, metal counters, plaster walls and white oak all bring texture and the kind of quiet variation you feel more than see,' Amber explains.

While the wood cabinetry certainly sets the tone for the space, the organic texture and tonal variations in the kitchen flooring instantly catch your eye. 'It's a small tumbled brick laid in a running bond, in this dreamy mix of blush, sand and gray. In a room this pared back, the floor is where the pattern and age get to sneak in. It gives the kitchen the feel of an old European courtyard, like an outdoor material that wandered inside. And practically? It's basically indestructible. With little kids in the house, that variation hides a lot of real life, and it only gets better with wear,' she adds.

Use Cabinetry To Add Lived-In Style

It's easy to overlook the visual impact your chosen kitchen cabinets can have on the design. It's not just about color and storage – the right style adds texture and interest, especially in a pared-back, neutral design. And in this kitchen, the cabinetry had to work harder, bringing movement, textural interest, and a less kitchen-y feel, which is where the shiplap-inspired fronts come in.

'I wanted the cabinetry to feel more like beautiful millwork than kitchen cabinets,' Amber recalls. 'The white oak planks run floor to ceiling around the range and along the back wall, and the fridge, pantry, and storage all disappear behind them. Out of sight, out of mind, which was perfect for clients who didn't want a single thing extra. The vertical lines give the room rhythm and texture without any fuss, and they pull your eye up so the ceilings feel even taller.'

Transform a Range Area Into the Heart of the Kitchen With Darker Tones

Modern spaces often overlook the range cooker area, opting to hide it rather than make it a focal point. But Amber had a different approach here, choosing to reinstate the range as the true heart of the kitchen. Centered and framed by a built-in range hood and flanked by full-length cabinetry, it's the dark backsplash that allows this nook to really stand out.

'The range wall is the heart of this kitchen. A big professional range sits under a simple plaster hood that melts right into the ceiling, with tall oak columns on either side,' she describes. 'Then we ran a dark, patinated metal backsplash all the way up to the hood, with a matching counter on each side of the range. I always say every room needs a touch of black, because it grounds everything and pulls the whole space together. Against all that pale oak and plaster, the dark metal does exactly that. Bonus: it's incredibly forgiving, which every busy kitchen needs.'

Design a Pantry That Feels Cohesive With the Main Kitchen

Your kitchen and pantry work in harmony, so the design should, too. It's easy to overlook these smaller storage spaces as purely functional, but they offer a charming opportunity to play with materials. In this project, Amber brought the same flooring and cabinetry style into the pantry, but used a soft neutral to create a light, inviting space, and dark countertops that tie back to the backsplash behind the range.

It's easy to see why she highlighted this space as a standout feature. 'So, it’s not technically the kitchen, but tucked just down the hall is the oh-so-cute pantry, and it’s my favorite. The built-in shiplap cabinetry adds just enough contrast through its lines and hardware while still feeling true to the clean aesthetic. Plus, my Virgo soul loves an organized space, so the mix of open display and tucked-away storage checks all my boxes!'

Add Unexpected Industrial Style With Hardware

Never underestimate the power of hardware – specifically, the visual impact it has on a kitchen. While brass is favored for a classic look, a more minimal scheme requires something unexpected to bring another layer of interest. And in this kitchen, faucets and handles brought a more industrial look. 'A room this soft and neutral needs a little grit; otherwise, it can tip into too sweet,' Amber notes.

'The caged glass pendants, blackened bar pulls, and dark bridge faucets have that utilitarian edge I love. They work like punctuation marks, adding contrast and keeping the oak and plaster honest. We used naturally patinated finishes throughout the house because they bring quiet character without any upkeep. The clients wanted low-maintenance, and these finishes only look better with time.'

Create a Cozy Dining Nook

Just as the cabinet design created a more lived-in feel, the dining nook also brings a softer edge. It taps into the movement towards kitchens that do more than just function, and the upholstered banquette seating offers a cozier, more comfortable space to sit and really enjoy the kitchen. Even though there's a touch more color in this corner, it still feels perfectly at home in the minimal design.

'This nook is a built-in banquette that wraps the corner in charcoal upholstery, around a round oak pedestal table. The chairs have black frames and charcoal seats, with backs slipcovered in a caramel-and-cream stripe. That stripe is the one little hit of pattern in the kitchen, and it picks up the warm tones of the brick and oak,' Amber explains.

The smaller, decorative details were just as important in the design's success. 'A white globe pendant, linen shades, and a soft gray artwork keep everything calm. My rule is that a nook always needs a job, and this one's job is everyday family meals. A banquette fits more people than chairs alone; it's cozy for the kids, and the round table keeps everything flowing in a corner.'

'I think we'll continue moving away from kitchens that rely heavily on white, gray, or very safe neutrals, but I don't necessarily see that translating into overly saturated colors either,' says Kailee Blalock, Co-Founder of House of Hive Design Co. 'I'm much more interested in nuanced shades, muddy greens, warm blues, oxblood and burgundy, tobacco browns, buttery creams, and plaster-like neutrals that are a little harder to define. Those colors tend to change beautifully throughout the day and pair especially well with natural stone and wood.'

2. Jewel-Tone Purples Return

Purple has certainly been a controversial color in recent years, with kitchens in this color severely lacking. But the joy of moodier colors in recent trends has brought this color back to the forefront, and in kitchens, expect the richer, jewel-toned shades to be more prominent.

'I think the purples we're going to see more of in kitchens are the deeper, muddier shades: aubergine, plum and raisin rather than brighter, sweeter purples. They have enough brown and red in them that they can – almost surprisingly – behave almost like a neutral, particularly on cabinetry. What I love about aubergine is that it has real depth without feeling loud,' says interior designer Blair Burton.

This kitchen color trend relies on rich pairings. Purple alongside white can fall a little flat, but in combination with other rich jewel tones, like the emerald green backsplash tiles in this purple kitchen, you instantly get that rich, bold atmosphere. It shows confidence and character – exactly what kitchens should be in 2027.

'In this kitchen, we paired aubergine cabinetry with a deep green tile, warm wood and aged brass. Those are all colors and materials we find in nature, so even though the combination is quite rich, it doesn't feel artificial or overly decorated. I think that's where purple becomes especially interesting for kitchens. Used in a complex, earthy shade, it can give cabinetry the grounding quality of a dark neutral while bringing considerably more personality to the room.'

3. Dusty Blue Paired with Deep Maroon

'Don't be afraid to embrace color for an entire room; a full color-wash can be a beautiful, confident choice. If you go that route, make sure to balance it with some timeless elements, like antiques or original artwork, so the room still feels grounded and doesn't read as an ad.'

4. Browns Continue to Dominate, But Are More Muted

Brown's comeback is one for the books, and this hue isn't disappearing from kitchen color trends any time soon. 'Soft beige colors have been a pretty consistent go-to color in the kitchen for a few years now, which I LOVE, but I think more and more people are fearing color less. I think a big color for 2027 will be a soft and muted brown, like Virtual Taupe by Sherwin-Williams,' says interior designer Alexa Kingery.

'It’s still neutral, so it’s not too scary, but still a little more rich and bold than beige. There are so many different levels of commitment you can take when incorporating colors into your kitchen. I would definitely put brown on my kitchen cabinets; I don’t think that’s a color you’d have to fear going away anytime soon.'

5. Softer Olive To Replace Darker Green

Olive feels a little more relaxed and earthy – less moody, more livable – which fits where a lot of clients' tastes seem to be heading,' says Shannon.

'I think people are moving away from stark white kitchens and gravitating to warmer, earthy neutrals. At the same time, many people are ready for richer colors, and mossy and olive greens seem to fit the bill,' agrees interior designer Liz Williams. 'They offer depth and warmth that connect to the outdoors. Both the warm neutrals and mossy greens pair well with wood tones like rough-sawn beams, walnut countertops, or other wood furnishings.'

6. Warm Taupes Take Over Neutral Kitchens

Whites and grays are out, and warmer neutrals are in. But rather than sticking to the creams and beiges we've grown so used to, designers are hailing taupe kitchens as the go-to color in 2027 for a scheme that balances pared-back elegance with rich, inviting design. Paired with wood or drenched throughout a space, it's a color that feels far more layered and nuanced.

'I think we’ll continue to see a shift toward warmer, more nuanced neutrals in kitchens in 2027. One color I’ve been particularly drawn to is taupe, which has largely taken the place of gray as a foundational neutral. Depending on its depth and undertones, taupe can feel soft and understated or rich and sophisticated. It pairs beautifully with stained woods and natural materials, creating a palette that feels warm, layered, and timeless,' says Elizabeth Schulz, Co-Founder of Black Forest Design & Build.

'I love using taupe as a foundation, particularly on cabinetry, and building around it with natural materials, varied finishes, and thoughtful accents. Two colors I’ve been gravitating toward are London Fog and Woodcliff Lake, both by Benjamin Moore. London Fog is a softer, lighter taupe-greige, while Woodcliff Lake moves into a deeper, moodier brown-gray. I’ve returned to these complex neutrals on recent projects because they offer flexibility without feeling predictable.'

7. A Bold Combination of Ochre and Maroon

'Another big combo I think we’re going to see in 2027 is a deep maroon paired with ochre. We’ve already seen a bit of maroon on walls and cabinetry this year, but I think it’s going to explode next year, and the ochre color just adds another warm layer to it,' says Alexa.

This combination has different levels, depending on how bold or subtle you want the pairing to feel. 'If you’re feeling more bold, you could try doing some cabinetry in a maroon color, like Arresting Auburn by Sherwin-Williams. Throw in some beautiful fall foliage to pull in a touch of the ochre color for an added touch,' she suggests.

'There’s something wonderfully nostalgic about gingham, with its lovely associations of picnic blankets, country kitchens and those slightly mismatched interiors that feel as though they’ve been collected over time. It’s a pattern that has always had a certain charm, but translate it into tiles, and suddenly it feels fresh, playful and completely at home in a modern interior,' says Grazzie Wilson, Head of Creative at Ca' Pietra.

'Gingham is such a timeless, nostalgic pattern. It makes me think of summer picnics and cozy cottages with a fire burning. There’s something wonderfully familiar and comforting about it, and it feels at home throughout the seasons,' adds Jessica Horton of Deorling Studio. 'They bring a playful charm and a touch of whimsy. Translating a pattern we usually associate with fabric into tiles feels unexpected, while retaining that lovely sense of nostalgia.'

Because tiles are often used in more functional spaces, whether it's the main kitchen or adjacent pantry, a bathroom or laundry room, choosing a design that feels reminiscent of fabric instantly softens the space without compromising the practical requirements the tiles provide.

'They bring pattern, rhythm and joy,' says Sophie Rowell of Côte de Folk. 'It gives a room a strong visual anchor and can make any space feel considered and characterful. I think there's something unexpected, yet familiar about a gingham tile; it’s playful and youthful but still grown up enough to work in a sophisticated scheme.'

'I’d let the gingham be the main pattern in the room, giving it space to shine rather than pairing it with another large-scale print. Keep the surrounding finishes relatively simple, bringing in texture and complementary colors to create balance,' Jessica suggests. 'I love it in a bathroom or as a statement floor or in an entrance hall. It’s also particularly charming in a kitchen pantry, where that nostalgic feel works beautifully.'

'A cottage kitchen should feel welcoming and lived-in, with a sense of history rather than feeling as though everything has been installed at once. I love mixing old and new to create a space that feels personal and full of character.'

The updated take on cottagecore requires a real mix of features, from thoughtful color schemes to blended furniture styles and a balance of old and new. It should feel collected over time and deeply personal – it shouldn't look as though you are trying to force an aesthetic.

'The key is to focus on the more timeless elements of cottagecore, from natural materials and warm, earthy color palettes to vintage finds and thoughtfully crafted objects,' Gemma explains. 'Keeping the look understated, rather than leaning too heavily into whimsical details, helps capture the essence of slow living without the space feeling overly themed or contrived.'

For Sophie Garland, decorating with antiques is key to the look. 'Mix antique furniture with modern practical elements, and use color and pattern thoughtfully,' she advises. 'The aim is to create a kitchen that feels as though it has evolved over time, rather than following a particular trend.'

Instead of focusing on just the decorative pieces you bring into your space, consider how the principles of cottagecore style can be introduced to the bones of your kitchen. For Sophie Rowell of Côte de Folk, that means 'anything that gives your kitchen a sense of history and personality: aged brass hardware, vintage dressers, and plate walls. I love incorporating lamps onto kitchen countertops or a perfectly placed wall light for nighttime low-level lighting.'

'I love freestanding antique furniture, open shelving and patterned curtains,' adds Sophie Garland. 'They add warmth and individuality, making the kitchen feel more like a living space than a fitted kitchen. Good lighting and natural materials also help create a cozy, welcoming atmosphere.'

'Gingham and striped fabrics are a lovely way to introduce pattern while keeping the overall look timeless. 'Tongue-and-groove paneling is another detail I love, particularly as a backsplash. It introduces texture and character, while offering an opportunity to bring in a subtle wash of color without overwhelming a smaller space.'

I think the best kitchens balance old and new, retaining the charm of the building while still feeling practical and comfortable for modern family life,' says Sophie Garland.

The glossy, chocolatey finger tiles in the shower add texture and a little shimmer, while the marble checkerboard floor introduces creamy caramel tones alongside those deeper browns,' explains Grazzie.

'And then there's the brassware, which is almost the finishing flourish. Against all those rich reds and browns, the warm metallic finish really sings. That's what I love about this approach. You're not trying to make every surface disappear into the next. You're building up a palette, playing with how light bounces off different materials and giving the eye little moments of contrast. It's rich, it's cozy, and it has bags of personality, which is exactly what a bathroom should have.'

'The palette continues the story of the house we designed, where we used deep merlots, plums, greens, and ochres. Bringing those rich, saturated tones into the bathroom creates a sense of continuity throughout the home while giving the space its own distinct character.'

Because bathrooms tend to be smaller spaces, people often default to white tiles and fixtures, which can leave them feeling quite cold and clinical. I also think it is a mistake to choose everything from the same range – a bathroom can still feel cohesive without every element matching perfectly,' says interior designer Laura Stephens.

'I would embrace the fact that it is a smaller space and use it as an opportunity to be a little bolder. Color, pattern and texture can completely transform a shower room, whether it's a patterned tile, painted paneling, or an interesting floor. Even in a very small bathroom, there should be some contrast and layering – it is what stops a bathroom from feeling like a purely utilitarian space.'

A patterned floor, a colorful shower wall, contrasting grout, and another statement tile behind the vanity can quickly become rather a lot to take in. Instead, give one element its moment and let everything else complement it.'

When it comes to interiors, the idea that bigger is always better has led to more than one design mistake. A large shower area might sound like the pinnacle of luxury, but it actually creates an uninviting space that leaves the rest of the bathroom feeling overcrowded and dysfunctional.

'One of the first things I'd consider is the view as you enter the bathroom. You don't necessarily want to be confronted by a large glass screen or the side of an enclosure, particularly in a smaller space. Think about where the shower sits in relation to the vanity and how much uninterrupted floor space you can preserve. Sometimes a slightly smaller, beautifully proportioned enclosure will make the whole bathroom feel more generous.'

5. Choosing Materials Unsuitable For Their Placement

It's easy to get carried away with bathroom tile selections, and while designers recommend choosing beautiful designs that add character and personality to a walk-in shower, choosing the right materials and finishes for each placement is really important. The wrong floor tile, for example, can lead to an impractical design.

'Make sure the tiles are suitable for where they're going. Those deliciously glossy finishes might look fabulous on the walls, but the shower floor needs something with appropriate slip resistance. Let the walls do the showing off and give your feet something sensible to stand on,' Grazzie advises. Check the specifications of the tiles you like the look of – just because they are suitable for bathrooms and walk-in showers doesn't mean they work for a shower floor.

'People often underestimate the importance of planning storage at the very beginning rather than trying to find somewhere for toiletries afterwards,' says Sophie. 'A properly designed wall niche can provide useful storage without taking up floor space.'

7. Placing the Shower Controls Beneath the Shower Head

One thing people overlook in almost any walk-in shower design is the placement of the shower controls. But it becomes all the more important in a shower room, where controls directly beneath the shower head will leave you drenched every time you turn the shower on. Instead, placing the controls by the entrance of the shower allows you to turn the shower on before you step inside.

'Another mistake is designing the shower around how it looks rather than how somebody will actually use it. Can you turn the water on without getting soaked? These things sound incredibly obvious, but they're often forgotten in the excitement of choosing beautiful finishes,' Keeley explains.

'I'd encourage homeowners to invest thought in the brassware. It's something you interact with every day, so the quality, positioning and finish really matter. A beautifully designed shower valve in polished nickel, for example, can introduce a lovely sense of refinement, particularly when it's coordinated with the other fittings.'

'I'd say at least two, but the floor plan really dictates the number. Depending on the size and layout of the room, four, five, or even six lamps can work beautifully!' says Amy Peltier of Peltier Interiors. 'The goal isn't to hit a specific number. It's to create little pockets of warm, inviting light throughout the space.'

A small living room might feature only two lighting sources, whereas a large living room might layer several types, from table lamps to wall lights. There is no exact figure to aim for; it all comes down to how you use your space.

While living room ceiling lights have their purpose, they should never be the only light source. 'This living room design remodel has all of my favorites in one space – statement overhead light fixture, wall sconces and a table lamp,' adds Shannon.

Scale plays an equal part in living room lighting. While the number of lamps matters, paying attention to the size of your pieces and how they hang or stand in a space is crucial.

'I don’t think there’s a magic number, but I typically like to incorporate at least one ‘main’ overhead chandelier, one hardwired wall lamp, and one table or floor lamp layered in,' Brooke Mennen-Talsma of Brooke MT Interiors says. 'Rather than relying on overhead lighting, I prefer lighting layered in at various heights in the room.'

'I especially love incorporating smaller lamps in unexpected places, like a bookshelf, built-in cabinetry, or a window nook,' Brooke adds. 'These little pockets of light make a room feel much more lived-in. Every space should be a combination of ambient, task, and accent lighting.'

'You should think about groupings of light in a space and zones when figuring out how many light sources are needed,' Sarah adds. 'An overhead light throws a lot of centralized light; then think about the perimeter walls – what do you want to highlight? A piece of art or an architectural feature? Then, move inward, giving each sitting area a dedicated task light, either a table lamp or a telescopic floor lamp for reading. Don’t forget candlelight; nothing is cozier than the warm glow of a candlestick sconce.'

'You want enough lamps so that you never reach for the ceiling switch. 'There's no reason to put can lights in any room other than maybe a kitchen. They usually go in a grid, dictated by the ceiling rather than the sofa or the art. The light is cold and unflattering even to a supermodel, and the living room ends up lit like a parking garage.'

A kitchen that transitions beautifully between seasons always feels more elevated, and that adaptability relies on thoughtful color choices. A bright yellow looks beautiful in summer, but can easily feel jarring in the winter, while a rusty orange thrives in fall yet feels out of place come spring.

To ensure the chosen kitchen color shone through each season, Alex Azat, Founder of Plaster & Patina, looked to the surrounding landscape for inspiration. 'The walls are painted Farrow & Ball's French Gray, which is a moody neutral tone that leans green. We wanted to bring the outdoors in while choosing a color that felt grounded and earthy. The cream ceiling felt right because it lightened the space and made it feel brighter and fresher.'

This soft tone is incredibly transitional, bringing a very soft moodiness in fall and winter, yet reverting to a bright, inviting tone when natural light filters in during spring and summer. It also pairs with several materials and finishes, so decorative pieces can be edited throughout the year to reflect the season.

Play With a Mix of Storage Styles For a More Lived-In Kitchen

Creating a lived-in kitchen goes beyond decor. It's about the furniture and layout of your entire design, but in a smaller kitchen with no space for lots of freestanding furniture and sofa-style seating, choosing a mix of storage styles instantly creates a more layered look without compromising on function.

It's an approach used throughout this design, from the classic closed cabinets and drawers around the perimeter of the room to the glazed counter cabinets and open shelving on the walls. 'The mixture gives the space depth and a layered feel, allowing for ample space to style and make the room feel comfortable and textured,' Alex explains.

This design takes it a step further, not only mixing the kitchen storage for a lived-in look, but also choosing specific styles and materials that make the kitchen feel larger and brighter. 'With the space being small (only 194 sq ft!), the reflection of the glass also helped to create a bright and interesting atmosphere.'

Introduce Creative Cabinetry Ends

The depth of kitchen cabinets and the space on either side of a room's entry don't always align. It was an obstacle in this design, where the perimeter cabinetry protruded into a doorway to the adjoining breakfast room. But instead of stopping the storage awkwardly short, Alex chose a more decorative approach.

'The kitchen actually has a flat wall leading to a breakfast room, which only left us a few inches after the casing. We were forced to get creative with how to end our cabinetry to take full advantage of the space and avoid cutting the cabinetry short,' she explains.

Creating a curve from the front of the cabinets to the wall makes the whole design feel more intentional and considered while creating space for open shelving. Plus, the curves instantly soften the kitchen corner and create a more elegant flow between spaces.

Maximize a Galley Kitchen With a Custom Island

A standard island often doesn't fit a galley kitchen – and squeezing one in where there isn't space is one of the biggest kitchen layout mistakes you can make. But to give this kitchen the centerpiece it deserved, Alex chose to go custom, creating a kitchen island that's rich in tone and perfectly proportionate in size.

'I truly loved designing this island; it will go down as one of my favorites to date! It is extremely thin, at about 15" in depth, so I wanted to make it small but mighty. I wanted to add a unique flair and really bring attention to it, rather than allowing it to become an afterthought. I wanted it to feel prominent, important, and add to the room's intrigue,' she explains.

The design of the island was about more than simply creating an additional prep space that actually fit the kitchen – it was about introducing craftsmanship, too, with subtle details that feel almost vintage in style. 'My favorite part is the legs,' Alex adds. 'I feel it looks a bit like it's wearing heeled shoes, and I am obsessed with them! Bless our clients for letting us have fun with this detail!'

Bring in Personality with Collected Decor

The personalized feel of this kitchen comes from the collected decor, a mix of art pieces and aesthetic kitchenware that feels curated rather than cluttered. 'Our clients had a great collection of pewter and dishware from their grandparents that they didn't know how to display, so this gave them the perfect opportunity,' Alex recalls. Open shelving played an important role, allowing pieces to be seen without taking over work surfaces.

'To make this kitchen feel more inviting and less stuffy, we felt it was important to have open shelves displaying items that were effortlessly placed and imperfectly mismatched. This technique helps to make a formal space feel more approachable. We love styling opportunities in all our kitchens. When we design a new kitchen space, it is always very important to us to add soul and intriguing older elements. We want the space to feel like it has lived some life, even if it is new!'

'I love polished nickel plumbing paired with aged brass hardware, or stainless appliances alongside something warmer and more patinated. 'We’ll always love natural stone, but I think designers and homeowners are beginning to look beyond the expected,' Jennifer adds. 'Concrete, plaster, handmade tile, unlacquered and oil-rubbed metals, natural woods, and materials with visible texture and variation will become increasingly important. There’s an appreciation for materials that develop character over time rather than looking perfect forever.'

'We love that it feels grounded and natural. Depending on the shade and material, it can also read completely differently, from earthy and organic to rich and sophisticated.'

3 Ways To Introduce Brown to Your Bathroom

1. Paint and Tiles

There are plenty of ways to bring shades of brown into your bathroom, depending on where you are in the design process. Paint is an easy place to start. 'If you are hesitant to go all in on brown, consider pairing it with white wainscoting or beadboard for a softer look, like Silhouette AF-655 and Swiss Coffee OC-45,' suggests Arianna Barone, Color Marketing Manager at Benjamin Moore. 'A dark, moody brown can also make a bold color statement in powder rooms. Try Smoked Oyster 2109-40 which blends brown, violet, and gray, bringing an intriguing and unique color to the space.'

Bathroom tiles also offer a stylish but practical way to bring in brown tones, but specifically designs with a more irregular, organic finish. 'Part of the reason we are seeing brown return now is that there is much more appetite for surfaces with variation and character, and less interest in everything looking perfectly uniform,' says Lesley Taylor, Founder and Creative Director at Baked Tiles, who says grout is just as important as the tiles themselves.

'Think about format and grout just as carefully as the color itself. A deep brown in a small-format gloss tile can feel rich and decorative, whereas the same shade in a larger matt format becomes much calmer and more monolithic. Grout can shift the look again: a close tonal match will soften the surface and let the color take the lead, while a paler grout will emphasize the geometry and make the pattern much more graphic.'

2. Bathroom Furniture

If you want to introduce brown in a more unique way, why not swap out the white bathroom furniture for a deeper tone? A bathroom vanity in a rich brown paint or dark wood stain instantly feels elegant and timeless, and offers a unique opportunity to play with texture.

'The easiest, most classic way to introduce brown is through natural wood,' says Leah Hook, Founder and Principal Designer at Gray Oak Studio. 'A natural walnut vanity will instantly elevate and add depth to space, while a brown grasscloth in a powder room would be utterly timeless.'

But a brown bath, even if it's just a painted or tiled side panel, brings a new layer of interest. 'If you are using brown on a bath, I would resist matching it elsewhere. Let the bath be the strongest expression of the color and then repeat only its undertones – perhaps in veining through a stone tile, a warmer timber, or the finish of the brassware. That repetition is enough to make the room feel coherent without making it feel themed,' says Keeley Sutcliffe, Design Manager at BC Designs.

Varying the shades of brown keeps things looking collected vs. too matchy,' says interior designer Liz Williams.

Think about the pieces you use daily in your bathroom to bring in a new color. Case in point: her primary bedroom suite, featured in her new book This Oak House – a visual feast that follows the renovation of her historic Los Angeles home, which has built up quite the devoted following over on her #reno Instagram account. While the bones of the generous space were relatively untouched in the remodel, her bedroom retreat is now a room filled with color, pattern, antiques, and pretty much everything you might expect to make a room feel full of life – yet somehow, it feels incredibly calm.

So, what’s the secret? Here, we’re breaking down the Design DNA behind Annie’s bedroom and the clever decorating decisions that make all those rom-com-worthy layers work so beautifully together.

Start With Two Fabrics, Not a Paint Color

It’s tempting to start any scheme with the walls, especially something as important as your bedroom, where you want to envelope all four (or five!) walls in the perfect color, but Annie took the opposite approach. When it came to decorating her bedroom, the fabrics came first. 'The starting point was really the fabric for the headboard,' she explains. 'I fell in love with this incredibly pale, soft yellow Claremont fabric and was obsessed with it from the beginning. From there, we chose the Jasper green print for the chair and ottoman, and once we had those two fabrics, we really built the room around them.'

Annie says she wanted the room to feel 'calm, collected, warm, and layered' – something she achieved through smaller moments of connection, rather than bold color. The green from the floral on the chair appears again and again in the decor, while cream upholstery and a natural rug give all that pattern and color somewhere to breathe. 'Everything started to speak to everything else,' she adds. Crucially, Annie chose the wall color last, testing the yellow against different whites before landing on Pointing by Farrow & Ball. 'We knew we wanted the walls to read more or less as white, but a white that is too bright or too cool next to a warm yellow can suddenly make the yellow feel almost fluorescent,' she advises. 'We worked to find a white that had enough warmth to sit beautifully alongside the headboard without reading yellow on its own.'

The lesson is a particularly clever one: choose the elements you love most before choosing your paint. Start with one or two anchor prints, art, or vintage textiles, and pull secondary colors from them and then find a wall shade that supports the palette afterwards.

A Statement Headboard Gives a Large Room a Focal Point

A large bedroom can be a tricky thing to furnish. Go too small, and the furniture can look a little lost; go too big, and suddenly the bed is screaming for attention. Annie found the sweet spot with her upholstered headboard, which measures exactly four feet – a proportion she particularly loves. 'The four-foot height came entirely from my designer Mike Moser,' she explains. 'He loves a four-foot headboard, and every headboard in our house is four feet. He is completely right about it. There is something about that height that gives a bed real presence without overwhelming the room.'

For Annie, though, the appeal is about more than measurements. She chose a 'warm and happy' fabric soft enough to feel feminine without becoming overly so. The shape was carefully considered, too: its rounded corners were inspired by the work of Rose Tarlow and Rose Uniacke, while a tailored matching bed skirt keeps the overall look polished.

'Since this is a bedroom my husband and I share, that balance was really important to me. And then that very pale yellow keeps the whole thing feeling warm and happy without being loud,' she adds. That balance is key in a bedroom of this scale: the headboard's size and shape give the bed enough visual weight to anchor the space, but its softer shape and pale color keep it from dominating.

Unify Multiple Zones With an Oversized Rug

When a bedroom is large enough for a bed, sitting area, and desk, some designers would be tempted to give each zone its own identity – and its own rug. That was Annie’s original instinct, too. Then she attended a dinner party at designer Michael Smith's house that changed her mind. 'He had used one enormous rug, and it made the entire room feel unified,' she says of his bedroom. 'I texted Mike from Michael’s house and said, “It’s one rug! We have to do one rug!” And that’s what we did.' The oversized, almost wall-to-wall rug became a simple but clever way of making the generous space feel like one room, rather than a collection of smaller ones.

It’s an especially effective trick here because the bedroom has plenty of inviting furniture competing for attention. The bed, sofa, armchair, and desk all serve different purposes, but the large neutral rug creates a visual thread between them. So rather than stopping at the edge of one arrangement, it stretches across the room, helping everything feel connected.

Annie says the change in decision 'made the large bedroom feel more intimate rather than divided into zones.' It was such a simple switch, but it made a huge difference. 'There’s an alchemy to a room that feels collected: the mix of old and new, quiet and patterned, tailored and soft,' she explains of the lessons in balance she took from working alongside Mike. 'While designing, you put something in, you take something out, you live with it, and you keep adjusting until the room finds its balance.'

Don’t Match Your Patterns – Connect Them

There’s a lot going on in her bedroom when you really look at it: florals, stripes, upholstered furniture, patterned pillows, and a woven ottoman, all layered together. Yet nothing feels as though it’s fighting for attention. The trick is that Annie isn’t trying to make the patterns match perfectly – she’s making sure their colors connect. 'Everything had to work within the framework established by those first two fabrics,' she explains, referring to the pale yellow headboard and green floral that formed the starting point for the scheme.

That framework gave Annie plenty of freedom to mix things up. The green from the floral is echoed elsewhere in the room, while yellow makes smaller appearances to keep the original anchor fabric connected to the rest of the scheme. Stripes introduce another pattern without competing with the floral, and the cream sofa and rug provide what Annie describes as a 'soft canvas' between the more decorative elements.

Even the woven base of the ottoman adds texture without introducing another color or print. 'I think that’s really the key to layering: each element should add something to the room while still working as part of the whole,' she advises. 'I really believe you can use color and pattern and still create a room that feels quiet,' she adds.

Mix Antiques With New Pieces to Avoid the Showroom Effect

A room can have plenty of beautiful furniture and still feel a little… showroom-y. So, Annie's solution to avoid soulless schemes is to introduce some history. 'I believe in antiques in literally every room,' she says, and her bedroom certainly follows that rule. Alongside the custom upholstered bed and newer sofa are an antique serpentine chest, an antique dresser, a Gustavian desk chair, and vintage lamps, while an antique copper lantern adds another layer of charm overhead. 'They give a room individuality and history, and they immediately prevent it from feeling as though everything was bought at once or from the same place,' she adds.

For Annie, that contrast is the point. 'I never want a room to feel entirely old either.' She loves the 'tension between the antiques and the newer pieces', and says this transitional mix helps prevent a room from feeling too uniform or overly new. Here, tailored upholstery sits alongside patinated wood, softer fabrics meet harder surfaces, and polished newer pieces are balanced by those with a little age and wear. 'That juxtaposition is what makes a room feel collected over time, even when you’ve actually thought very carefully about every piece that went into it,' she adds.

One of the best examples is the antique serpentine chest that became Annie’s bedside table. She found the piece on 1stDibs, ordering it from Belgium, but when it arrived, it was three inches shorter than the listed dimensions. Rather than abandoning it, the vendor found a local antique restorer who modified the legs to bring it to the correct height. In This Oak House, Annie says the experience ultimately made her love the piece even more because of the story behind it.

Layer Lighting to Make a Large Bedroom Feel Intimate

A bedroom this large could easily start to feel cavernous once the sun goes down. Annie has a simple solution: don’t rely on the big light to do all the work. Instead, she layers light throughout the room, from the two alabaster lamps she inherited from her mother on either side of the bed to an Atelier Vime wicker lamp on the dresser, a Rose Tarlow lamp she bought herself as a housewarming gift, and a simple Vaughan floor lamp. Above it all hangs a large antique copper lantern, which helps bring some weight to the room’s dramatic ceiling height.

Annie is very clear about how she wants all of those lights to be used: 'I never turn on the recessed lights at night.' Instead, it’s the softer pools of lamplight that create the atmosphere. 'I want the lighting to be low and warm, especially at the end of the day,' she adds. 'The combination of those different sources of light completely changes the feeling of the room at night. It becomes much softer and more intimate.' In This Oak House, she quips: 'If you learn one thing from this book, please use more lamps!' And if Annie’s bedroom is anything to go by, more lamps really may be the secret to making a big bedroom feel wonderfully cozy.

'The bedroom doesn’t feel old, but it also doesn’t feel new,' Annie continues. 'It doesn’t feel overly decorated or like it came out of a showroom. The antiques give it history, the fabrics give it softness and personality, and the lighting gives it warmth. I think it’s that balance that ultimately gives the room its sense of soul.'

There's something really comforting about these kitchen colors – they trigger memories of childhood holidays and Sundays at your grandparents' house. And while many of the colors synonymous with the decade are making a comeback, it's in a slightly more refined way.

The colors returning are those that feel playful, yet still really timeless – they're inspired by the '60s, but brought back a bit more tastefully. And according to designers, these are the revived colors worth having on your radar.

The '60s Kitchen Colors Returning in 2027

When we talk about '60s colors making a comeback, we don't mean replicating designs of the past. It's about taking inspiration from the palettes and evolving them to feel current and sophisticated in kitchens today. Here's how designers are making them work for a characterful yet still timeless scheme.

1. Muted Mustard Yellows

There's no denying that yellow kitchens have well and truly made a comeback this year. From a Mediterranean-inspired deVOL kitchen to Studio Mac's butter yellow kitchen by the sea, these soft, pale shades have become some of the most popular. But the '60s favored a muddier, richer yellow shade – and mustard kitchens are set to return.

'I think muted mustard yellows are definitely coming back. They have that unmistakable 1960s quality, a little bit playful but can feel surprisingly sophisticated when used in the right way. I love yellows that have a little depth and warmth to them rather than anything too bright or primary,' says interior designer Laura Stephens.

'Mustard is one of those colors I’ve always had a soft spot for because it has such an immediate warmth to it. We instinctively associate it with the late 1960s, but the way it is returning now feels much more sophisticated,' agrees Lesley Taylor, interior designer and Founder at Baked Tiles. 'Rather than the very obvious retro yellows of the period, I’m seeing people drawn to softer, earthier versions, from ochre and saffron to tobacco and honey. They still have that same confidence, but they’re much easier to live with.'

There are so many ways to introduce mustard yellow into a kitchen, but Lesley recommends a more confident approach. 'Tiles are probably my favorite way to introduce it because you’re not just adding color, you’re adding surface too. I’d always choose something with a little movement in the glaze rather than a completely flat finish. Those small variations between tiles are what make a wall feel interesting close up, and they stop a strong color from feeling too solid or one-dimensional.'

'I’m a big fan of using it on the cabinetry, particularly when it is balanced with natural timber and another warm, contrasting color,' Laura adds. 'I think that combination is what stops the color from feeling too retro – you can take the confidence and optimism of a 1960s palette, but mix it with warm woods and more earthy tones to create something that feels very relevant now.'

2. Lacquer Reds

Over the years, kitchen finishes, especially paint colors, have become very matte. It makes sense – these paint formulas are made with durability in mind, something you need in a kitchen. But the '60s championed the playful finish of glossier surfaces, which has perhaps inspired the return of lacquer reds.

'Glossy, lacquered reds are having a moment again. It has that wonderful optimism and confidence of the 1960s, but can feel surprisingly timeless when used in the right way. We used a rich gloss red for the pantry in our Somerset Country House project and on the main kitchen island, which gives what could otherwise be a very functional space a real sense of joy,' says interior designer Octavia Dickinson.

'Red is particularly good at bringing warmth to a kitchen, and I like that it can be both incredibly traditional and wonderfully modern. The key to a red kitchen is choosing a red with a little warmth and using it alongside materials that have age and texture, so it doesn't become too obviously retro. I would use it on something that can really embrace the color – a pantry, island, dresser, or run of cabinetry – rather than being frightened of it and using it only as an accent.'

3. Deep Olive

Recent kitchen color trends have shifted toward earthier kitchen colors, bringing a timeless quality without relying on plain white or overly bold hues. And olive green kitchens in particular are having a moment, balancing classic style with a more unique approach.

'Deep olive is a color with strong roots in 1960s interiors, and we’re seeing an interest in these deeper, earthy greens. It doesn’t dominate the room and sits well alongside natural materials and softer, chalkier tones. There is also something timeless about an earthy green, which allows it to sit comfortably in both traditional and contemporary interiors,' explains Carly Allison of Fired Earth.

This shade's beauty lies in its versatility; it pairs well with other colors and finishes, so you can drench a kitchen or use it as a secondary color. 'Using deep olive across cabinetry and walls creates an enveloping look, particularly when balanced with lighter colored tiles. For a more pared-back approach, use it on an island or solely on kitchen cabinetry,' she suggests.

4. Pale Pink

Pink, in the right not-too-sweet, not-too-bright shade, can feel elegant and chic in a kitchen. Rather than the bold Barbie pinks of past trends, designers are drawing inspiration from the '60s with softer, more muted shades, and pairing them with unexpected hues for a more mature balance.

'Pink is having a real moment again, and I am a massive fan! It’s such a fun and versatile color, with so many shades to play around with. It has a lovely way of bringing energy and personality into a room and making it feel playful and joyful,' says Sarah Brown, Founder and Creative Director of Sarah Brown Interiors.

'I have always been a fan of pink, and used it in my own kitchen at home, but contrasted it with a strong burgundy to stop it feeling too saccharine or girly. The burgundy adds depth to the pink, creating a unique and unexpected mix. It’s not necessarily the first color pairing you’d think of, but it brings so much character to a kitchen.'

5. Moody Oxblood

If brighter, lacquer reds aren't your style, another red kitchen shade that was incredibly popular in the '60s is making a striking comeback. It's one of those moody colors that adds instant richness to a kitchen, but it can also act as a dark neutral in the right space.

'Oxblood is a deep, dark red with rich brown and subtle purple undertones. Unlike burgundy, it has a more alluring depth to it. There’s a mystery to it that’s really appealing to live with,' says interior designer Brittny Button. 'There’s a luxurious livability to this shade. It’s grounding and energizing at the same time.'

Painting your cabinets dark red with a lighter wall feels classic, but you can be more confident with this shade, too. 'If you want a more enveloping effect, painting the walls and cabinetry in the same color can work well. The finish is also important; for example, our Plant-Based Matt or Eggshell will give you a smooth, durable finish ideal for a high-traffic area like this,' adds paint expert Dominic Myland.

6. Dark Wood Tones

Wooden kitchens have been back in style for a while now, but the tones are getting deeper this year, much like the styles that were popular in the '60s. These richer tones bring depth and interest to kitchens, and a stronger material contrast than the white oaks that have been everywhere recently.

'Deep wood tones, which soared in the '60s, are back on the scene as of last year and are starting to take the lead! Homeowners and designers are looking for that connection to the natural world. Think chocolate browns like mahogany and walnut, which were particularly popular in that era,' explains Shae Wilder of BlueStar.

There are several ways to bring dark wood tones into your kitchen, cabinetry being the most obvious, but you can also clad the walls, bring it in through flooring, or take an altogether more daring approach, as Shae explains. 'The '60s also loved color-drenching, which we still see today. Colorful kitchen cabinets and wood-drenched spaces have been popular again for some years now, just in different colors and tones.''

7. Soft Greens

The elevated return of dark olive covers the deeper shades of green, but a lighter hue from the '60s feels very much back in style. Think of it as a more sophisticated, heritage green that takes the best of the avocado era and brings a more up-to-date and timeless feel to kitchens of every style and size.

'We're continuing to see clients gravitate towards green. In the '60s, the colors were avocado and olive, used with real abandon. Today, we're seeing deeper, more sophisticated greens that carry the same warmth and optimism, but a bit more refined for modern living,' says Paul Kropp of Bakes & Kropp.

'A few years ago, people wanted their homes to feel joyful and bold, and color became a way to express that. That desire hasn't gone away, but it has matured. Our clients still want personality; they just want it measured, and green fits that moment perfectly. It brings in warmth and a connection to nature without overpowering a room, and it pairs easily with wood, stone, and metal. It feels expressive and grounded at the same time.'

'I don't think a kitchen needs to look deliberately '60s,' says Octavia. 'It's much more interesting to take one element of that era and interpret it in a way that feels personal and timeless.'

That combination of high visibility and hard use is what makes choosing a kitchen backsplash trickier than simply falling for the perfect tile. Material and finish determine how well it stands up to life, while size, color, pattern, and grout can completely alter its visual impact. How it meets the rest of the kitchen matters just as much.

‘Even a high-end backsplash can look bad if it hasn’t been properly planned around windows, open shelves, cabinet edges or range hoods. There’s nothing more annoying than walking into your kitchen every morning and seeing backsplash that sticks out or overlaps awkwardly – what an eyesore!’ says Nancy Vu, Co-founder of M&S Construction Group.

This guide is designed to take some of the guesswork out of it. We’ll work through the decisions in logical order, from choosing the right material and working out how much wall to cover to getting the color, layout and finishing details right. We’ll also flag the practical issues worth knowing before you buy, so that by the time installation starts, the difficult decisions have already been made – and your new backsplash looks as dreamy IRL as it did on paper.

1. Start with How Your Kitchen Works

Before looking at stone slabs or tile samples, consider what happens against the walls of your kitchen. A backsplash behind a sink that sees constant washing-up has a different job from one on a wall occupied mainly by a coffee station. Likewise, the surface immediately behind a frequently used range has to cope with grease, food splashes, and heat in a way that an empty stretch above a side counter may not.

Identify the Hardest-Working Areas

Map the sink, range, or cooktop and the principal food-preparation area first. These are generally the places where ease of cleaning and appropriate material performance should take precedence over decorative considerations.

How you cook also makes a difference, especially if you’re into high-heat searing and spicy sauces, and generally use all the stove burners at once. A family kitchen may also benefit from surfaces that tolerate frequent wiping and don't show up every water mark or splash. In a kitchen used more for entertaining, or just very careful chefs, you may be willing to trade a little more maintenance for a delicate or characterful finish.

‘The first thing I identify is which parts of the backsplash will work hardest. The surface directly behind a busy range or sink may need to meet quite different practical requirements from a quieter section of wall,’ says Swati Goorha, Founder and Principal Designer at Swati Goorha Designs. ‘In those high-use areas, I prioritize materials that are durable, easy to clean, and resistant to moisture and everyday splashes while still considering how the material works with the overall kitchen design.’

Decide How Much Maintenance Feels Realistic

This is worth answering before falling for a particular material or backsplash trend. Would occasional resealing bother you (and would you reliably do it)? Are you happy to wipe polished metal frequently? Will smudgy grout joints be something you can happily ignore or something you immediately want to attack with a toothbrush?

Natural stone can be entirely practical in a kitchen, for example, but some stones and finishes require more considered care than glazed porcelain. Stainless steel is famously functional, but fingerprints and fine scratches are inevitable, and they’re not always pretty. Handmade tile may disguise the odd splash beautifully, but its irregularities make it a very different proposition cleaning-wise from a completely smooth slab. There is no universally 'best' backsplash material; you just need to ascertain which backsplash will work best for your household.

Consider the Rest of the Room

An open-plan kitchen places the backsplash in view from living and dining spaces, so its visual presence may deserve more consideration than in an enclosed kitchen where it is only seen close up. Think about the wider sightlines, too: flooring, furniture, lighting, and wall colors will all sit in the same field of view, and a backsplash that looks subtle at arm’s length can feel much busier from across the room.

Scale matters for the same reason. A backsplash covering one modest wall can afford to be more dynamic than a material wrapping several walls or running to the ceiling. If the kitchen already has a strong countertop, statement cabinetry, or patterned flooring, a quieter backsplash may give the eye somewhere to rest; in a simpler scheme, it can take on more of the decorative work.

2. Choose Your Backsplash Material

Backsplash material is probably the most consequential decision because it influences not only appearance but also joints, cleaning, heat tolerance, installation, and cost. A useful way to compare options is to think beyond whether a material is 'durable' and ask where it is durable. A surface may cope brilliantly with water but need greater consideration around heat, acidic cooking ingredients, or abrasive cleaning products.

Ceramic Tile

Ceramic tile remains one of the easiest backsplash materials to specify because it is available in an enormous range of sizes, colors, glazes, and prices. Glazed ceramic is generally easy to wipe clean and performs well in normal splash areas. Individual tiles can also be replaced if one becomes damaged, assuming you have retained spares.

Ceramic is generally easier for an installer to cut than porcelain, which can make elaborate layouts and numerous outlet cuts less laborious. Always check the manufacturer's intended application, bearing in mind that 'ceramic' describes a large family of products rather than one identical performance level.

The grout-factor is the main downside of tiling. Small formats can create a large number of grout joints, and those joints are going to get grubby in time, even if you are careful to seal them. You can improve matters by choosing a colored grout – or at least avoiding pristine white – and be prepared to scrub with a specialist grout cleaner should things get really dire.

Porcelain

Porcelain is technically a type of ceramic tile, but it is denser and defined in US standards by water absorption of 0.5% or less. That very low absorption makes it an appealing backsplash option, particularly where easy cleaning and resistance to moisture are priorities. Modern porcelain tile is available in XL slabs that are impressively thin, which helps with installation and minimizing those pesky grout lines.

Porcelain can also convincingly replicate marble, limestone, concrete, metal and other surfaces, making it useful if you want the appearance of a more maintenance-sensitive material without pandering to specialist care requirements. The trade-off arrives at installation: dense porcelain is generally harder to cut than ordinary ceramic tile, which matters if the backsplash contains several outlets, windows or complicated edges. But, with the right tools, it’s perfectly doable.

Natural Stone

Marble, limestone, travertine, granite, quartzite, onyx, and other natural stones can create a backsplash with a depth and variation that manufactured surfaces struggle to duplicate. They do not, however, all behave in the same way.

Calcareous stones such as marble and limestone can be etched by acids. The Natural Stone Institute specifically cautions that lemon, vinegar, and other acidic cleaners may dull or etch these materials. Most natural stones require an impregnating sealer, which increases stain resistance but does not make the stone stain-proof. This is particularly relevant in a kitchen, where tomato, citrus, vinegar, wine and oil are frequently splashed.

‘Homeowners need to understand that some natural stones are more work than others. Marble and limestone are softer and require more care but are totally worth it,’ says Harmony Weihs, Designer and Owner of Design Harmony. ‘Quartzite is a natural stone I love using as it’s very durable and beautiful and requires minimal to no care. Although nothing is guaranteed “timeless”, if you want a more classic look, it’s worth sticking with neutrals and subtler veining.’

A polished slab will also behave differently visually and practically from tumbled tile or heavily textured stone. ‘Finish makes a huge difference, especially when choosing darker stone; the darker the stone, the more dramatic the sheen is, especially when polished. In most cases I prefer a honed stone over polished as it’s more casual,’ adds Harmony. Ask your stone supplier about the specific stone, finish, and proposed location, rather than relying on generic advice for 'natural stone'.

Engineered Quartz

Engineered quartz is fairly non-porous, easy to clean, and requires no sealing, making it a practical choice around both sinks and cooking areas. It’s not quite as stainproof as porcelain, but spills such as oil or curry paste will only leave a mark if they are left to fester. Good quality engineered quartz is suitable for use behind most cooktops and ranges, but always check the guidance for the surface you are specifying, as heat resistance can vary between brands, particularly with gas burners.

Sintered and Ultra-Compact Surfaces

Products in this broad category use mineral-based materials manufactured under high pressure and/or heat to create dense, low-porosity slabs. Like engineered quartz, their particular formulations vary, so use manufacturer data rather than assuming all sintered products have identical performance.

Dekton, for instance, is marketed for wall cladding and is highly resistant to stains, scratches, and heat, although its manufacturer still provides specific guidance concerning direct flames and installation around intense heat sources. As it’s available in XL slabs, the material can be a very practical way to continue a kitchen countertop vertically while reducing the number of joints.

Glass

Glass splashbacks are made from sheets of toughened or tempered glass. It can be painted in virtually any color, printed with a pattern, silvered or mirrored, given an antiqued finish, or kept clear to simply protect painted walls from splashes. Low-iron glass is particularly useful over wallpaper because it has less of the greenish tint found in standard clear glass.

As well as being easy to clean, glass has very few joints and no grout lines, which makes it a good choice for a sleek, low-maintenance finish. For safety, always use toughened glass around cooking areas and check any heat-clearance guidance for the product and appliance you are using. Accurate templating matters too, as holes and cut-outs for outlets, switches, or corners have to be made before the glass is toughened. With clear or translucent glass, the wall and fixings behind it also need to be neat, as they may show through.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is particularly at home around stove tops and ranges because it is nonporous, heat tolerant, and able to cope with plenty of splashes and spills, which explains its long association with professional kitchens. A steel sheet can be fabricated around outlets and other fittings with relatively few joints. On larger areas, sections can also be welded together and the seams ground and refinished for a hygienic, seamless appearance.

The downside is keeping steel looking pristine. Fingerprints, water marks, and greasy smears show readily, especially on highly polished steel, while brushed finishes are generally more forgiving. A tiny amount of stainless-steel conditioning or mineral oil buffed over the clean surface can help reduce fingerprints and restore shine.

Other Metals

Copper, brass, zinc and bronze sheets can bring warmth and depth, but their appearance rarely remains completely static. Often called ‘living finishes’, they naturally oxidize or develop a patina; acids, salts and cleaning chemicals can affect that process. Protective coatings may preserve a particular finish but introduce their own care requirements. Ask whether the sample represents how the metal looks new or after use, and whether a lacquer or other treatment is responsible for that appearance.

Brick

Original exposed brick can give a kitchen enormous character, but an attractive old wall and a practical cooking backsplash are not automatically the same thing. Brick and mortar are relatively porous, and deep joints and rough surfaces provide plenty of places for grease and food to settle. Sealing may improve cleanability but can alter the color or sheen, so test the finish first. Brick-look porcelain or brick slips offer a similar visual rhythm with much simpler maintenance if the practical demands of the location are high.
