Three floors up, less than 500 square feet, and riddled with tight corners – from the day I signed the lease, I knew my pre-war New York apartment would be difficult to furnish. I managed to fit a queen-sized bedframe, and a slim armoire gave the space some semblance of a normal apartment. But as for a sofa – there was simply no way a standard pick would work. I needed something modular.

Since this would be my first time owning a sofa (all of my previous apartments came pre-furnished), I had research to do. Of course, I didn't want something so cheap that I'd have to throw it away in a year. Instead, I wanted the best sofa I could get. But with a slew of parameters for my open-plan living room, my search proved to be more challenging than I thought. After a few weeks of feeling like I'd never find the right sofa, I came across modular sofa experts, Cozey.

After narrowing down my options, I landed on the Gaia XL in Flax Haven – a two-seater modular sofa in a soft tan color. I took a leap of faith and ordered it online. Just under a week later, it arrived.

I vividly remember sitting on the floor of my hardly furnished studio, staring at the five boxes that supposedly contained my new sofa. Was this the right decision, or was ordering a sofa online a huge mistake? Spoiler alert: it was, without a doubt, the right call. Setting It Up

A few things surprised me about my Gaia sofa's delivery. First: the speed. The sofa arrived at my apartment less than a week after I'd ordered it – faster than some of my online clothing purchases. Not only that, but I couldn't believe how compact it was. Only five boxes held everything, along with a sixth that held the adjustable side table I had also ordered.

Though I recruited help for set up (shoutout to my generous mother and sister), I could've easily assembled the Gaia sofa on my own. Set up is very straightforward, with instructions available online and inside the box.

Since I ordered the two-seater sofa with an ottoman, I received three square-shaped base pieces (two for the seats, one for the ottoman), two flat back pieces, two armrests, and several cushions and covers. I was very surprised at how easy it was to assemble the sofa structure – just a few simple steps and assembly was nearly done.

Oddly enough, the hardest part of the setup wasn't putting any of the structural pieces together. In fact, it was stuffing the cushions into their fabric covers. Because the cushions themselves are so big and the fabric covers are designed with zipper openings that are slightly too small, squeezing the cushion into the cover was a two-person job – one that caused both my mother and I to break a sweat and laugh at how ridiculous we probably looked trying to do this.

The only other challenge that my mother, sister, and I encountered while assembling the Gaia sofa was connecting the base seats. Two plastic connectors are supposed to hook onto the hidden feet of the sofa, connecting the left seat with the right seat in the middle. It seems simple in theory, but this was rather challenging for us – we'd hook the back connector, then the front one would pop off, and vice versa. I blamed this on the fact that the floor of my pre-war apartment is egregiously uneven – causing the feet to not line up properly – and decided to not use the connectors. Thankfully, the sofa didn't slide apart without these connecting pieces.

Much to my surprise, the entire process – unboxing, assembling, cushion-covering, and pushing into place – took just under an hour. And though I had help, I definitely could've done this alone.

As eccentric as I am, I will admit that I rarely get excited about microwaves. Why would I? They are some of the most mundane appliances in any kitchen. That said, there is a first time for everything.

Ninja's new CRISPi Microwave with Air Fryer has immediately piqued my interest. In a first, the appliances giant has combined two of the bulkiest countertop appliances into one, helping to save precious counter space in small kitchens while doubling the usefulness.

With the new FusionCrisp function and a PFAS-free interior, it combines everything I love about the best non-toxic air fryers with the practicality of a regular microwave. I am genuinely excited to give it a go.

The deep greens, soft beiges, and hints of red tie into the collection's grounding and easily adaptable nature.

There's a unique juxtaposition between portability and permanence in this collection – two factors that don't usually coexist, but in this instance, they do.

'We stated very early that the products should feel like 'real' furniture, even if we added solutions that made them perfect for moving,' Ina explains. Like the desk or the side table – both of which collapse flat and have handles for easy transportation – these pieces are designed to simplify frequent moves without sacrificing the feeling of home that traditional furniture delivers.

This week, I've found myself paying much more attention to the front of people's homes.

It's funny how much time we spend choosing paint colors, rearranging shelves, and hunting down the perfect lamp, while the very first thing anyone sees is often left until last. A tired doormat, neglected planters, an overgrown hedge, or a front door we've stopped noticing because we walk past it every day.

Those homes weren't necessarily grand, but they always felt warm, welcoming, and full of character.

I've always thought the entrance to a home quietly tells you what's waiting inside. Before you've even crossed the threshold, you've already formed an impression. This summer, I'm on a mission to make my patio the most desirable place to hang out on my property. A dorm room is usually blank, with empty white walls, devoid of any personality, and lacking in storage and organization. That's why, while at college, I relied on clever, damage-free hooks to string up my fairy lights, display pictures, and add all-important hanging space, without risking my deposit.

Once I graduated and moved out of my final college room, I thought I was done with Command Hooks, available at Amazon. As I soon found out, though, they aren't just for students.

How to Use Command Hooks Correctly

The key to using hooks for increased storage is to apply and remove the Command Hooks properly − you can't rush the process. To hang artwork without damaging walls and expand your home storage ideas, these Command tips are a must:

• Clean the wall first: Any small hair or dust can prevent proper adhesion. A slightly damp microfiber cloth, available from Walmart, is all you need for this.
• Use the correct strength strip: Always check the weight of the item you're hanging first. If you do not have suitably sized kitchen scales, from Walmart, for this, I have found that using bathroom scales (also from Walmart) and weighing myself, then weighing myself holding the object, and working out the difference, is a good guide. Opting for a strip designed for a bigger weight is always a safe option if you are unsure.
• Ensure the tab is pointing down: I cannot stress this step enough, as it is the reason I had to fix cracks in plaster walls in my second year. The small tab on a Command hook is how you remove it, and it needs to be pointing downwards, not sideways, to ensure damage-free removal later down the line.
• Allow the strip to stick before hanging anything: In a rush to decorate or organize a space, I have been guilty of sticking the strip on the wall and hanging the item up right away. However, this can cause the strip to peel away. Instead, let the strip sit on the wall for 24 hours before hanging anything with it to allow it to properly adhere.
• Remove slowly with two hands: The ‘damage-free’ part of command strips comes down to the removal technique. To remove a strip from a wall without damage, place one finger at the top of the strip, applying firm pressure, as you pinch and pull the bottom tab downwards, not away from the wall. This stretches the sticky backing for safe removal. Only once it is fully stretched out, remove your top finger for the strip to come away completely.

In summer 2026, if it’s not chrome, I don’t want it – a tricky proposition when we’re all living outdoors. I’d accepted that my chrome obsession would remain confined to the living room, kitchen, and dining table – seashell caviar servers and whatnot – until IKEA quietly dropped a weatherproof silver portable lamp that’s letting me take what is, in my opinion, the coolest look of the season onto my balcony.

And this new IKEA launch costs just $30. Officially, IKEA calls the finish polished nickel, but outdoors, this is about as close as we’re getting to that mirror-like chrome effect without worrying about the elements. Frankly, I didn’t think it was possible.

One reviewer calls it their (very chic) insurance policy against the near-inevitability of a summer power outage. ‘I already have similar lights that cost so much more, so when I saw this one for the price, I purchased two,’ they write. ‘They are nice and heavy and give great light.’

Another reason I’m paying attention? The designer: Carl Öjerstam, one of IKEA’s most celebrated talents, whose 1990s KARLSKRONA rattan lounge chair regularly resells for thousands on the secondhand market. If history repeats itself, this little lamp might prove to be more than just a good summer buy.

Chrome has largely stopped at the patio door, for obvious reasons. But if IKEA has figured out how to make a mirror-like finish that isn’t afraid of a summer storm, I have a feeling this is only the beginning.
