Dorm beds are notoriously sub-par, but it's all too easy to spend too much on dorm bedding, especially as dorm beds are often oddly sized, too − usually Twin XL but not always − which means taking bedding from home is usually not an option, either.

That's where I come in. It's far more difficult to do laundry at college, as laundry rooms tend to be extremely busy with simple machines, and it's likely that your child won't be using, or won't be able to use, delicate cycles or fabric softeners. For that reason, it's best to choose dorm bedding in materials that are durable, breathable, and easy to clean.

• Material: I'd recommend investing in 100 per cent cotton, in either percale or sateen, or bamboo blends. Cotton percale is crisp and cool, so ideal for hot sleepers or stuffy dorm rooms with bad or no AC, while sateen is softer, heavier, and feels more luxurious, but can be slightly more difficult to clean.
• Avoid polyester and microfiber: These materials are undoubtedly budget-friendly, but can trap heat, pill easily, and cause night sweats. If you do need something more affordable, though, opt for microfiber that's high-quality and brushed for added breathability.
• Thread count: Don't get weighed down by worrying about thread count. For college, a thread count between 200 and 400 is perfect for balancing both durability and breathability.
• Easy care: Before buying anything, ensure it's both machine washable and dryer-safe, which is essential for sanitizing and keeping a sleep space hygienic.

As a 15-year product journalist who has slept on many mattresses, some lumpy and bumpy, some too stiff, and others just right, I was so impressed by the Nolah Evolution Mattress that I’m still sleeping on it beyond the testing period by choice.

The Nolah Evolution is extremely comfortable and a mattress you look forward to sleeping on each night. It has a highly supportive memory foam top that helps you get that cozy, sinking-into-your-bed feeling, without making you feel hot or stuck.

It helps keep your spine in alignment, but also gives target relief in certain sections of the mattress where you might otherwise feel too much pressure.

The mattress comes in multiple options for firmness, which is helpful for determining which mattress will suit you and your needs, including plush, luxury firm, or firm. I chose the middle option, with the cooling pillow top, which you can also opt in or out of.

The Nolah Evolution Mattress − Delivery, Unboxing and Setup

This mattress is pretty much ready for use right out of the box. The company notes that odors (known as off-gassing) can take up to 24 hours to dissipate, although I didn’t notice any.

You can opt in to or out of a delivery service that sets up the mattress for you. You can also select to have the delivery service carry the mattress to the right room for you, which is highly convenient and worth it if you’d struggle to do so yourself, as I would.

Once it’s set up, the mattress feels fresh and new, and I immediately noticed the highly raised areas on the mattress that make up the support top. This means the mattress is exceptionally bumpy compared to others at first glance, with raised parts of the topper − something that I came to appreciate when I realized how comfortable the topper is.

What It’s Like to Sleep on the Nolah Evolution Mattress

Pressure relief and support: Typically, I’d start to feel some joint pressure and even pain while falling asleep, particularly in my hips and back. This mattress eliminated that problem and helped me reduce the time it takes to fall asleep by about 10-30 minutes per night. This is because there was never any hip or back pain, even as a side and stomach sleeper, which can sometimes cause misalignment or extra pressure.

According to the brand, this is due to the “lumbar zone,” referring to five zones through the materials that help with weight redistribution, relieving pressure on the joints. The website shares that the “tri-zone foam” is a middle firm layer responsible for extra lumbar support, which keeps hips elevated and spine aligned in any sleep position, without sacrificing softness and flexibility near the shoulders. This all reflected my own experience with the bed completely.

Thermoregulation: Heat control in a mattress comes down to two things − just how far into the mattress you sink, which can cause you to feel hotter, and the materials themselves and their cooling abilities.

When you sleep on this mattress, you have a good amount of “sink in” feeling, allowing the mattress to come up around your sides a tiny bit, but it’s not so much that you feel engulfed by it. This has been a problem with some competitors I’ve tried. In addition, the fabric is cool and breathable, so it doesn’t make you hotter, which is helpful.

Motion Isolation: I tested the motion transfer both by observing how much I’m disturbed by my partner’s movement through the night, and also through a test with a large glass of water on the bed. In the water test, I pushed on the mattress near the water to see how much it moved, and if it spilled. I could apply a good amount of pressure and get pretty close to the water without impacting it, showing that the bed performs pretty well when it comes to motion transfer.

However, compared to some other beds, I did notice my partner moving periodically through the night, though it wasn’t enough to really fully wake me up. So, while the motion transfer isn’t perfect, it’s definitely a reasonable amount and shouldn’t impact your decision to buy this mattress.

Edge Support: There is a good amount of give on the edges of the bed that doesn’t fully reflect how supportive it is to sleep on the bed. So, if you are someone sleeping near the edge of the bed and/or sitting on the edge of the bed, you will notice the edge gives way, and you slip a bit on a downward incline.

Though I’m not an expert on the bed construction, I believe this is because more of the support is focused on those lumbar areas and pressure relief, while the rest of the bed is a bit more forgiving and flexible. So, areas around the head and shoulders and the bed edges aren’t quite as stiff and sturdy as the middle.

This is a good thing, unless you are sleeping right on the edge. However, it did dissuade me from sitting on the edge of the bed for any tasks.

Materials: There are eight layers of materials in the hybrid mattress, from the top cotton cover down to the high-density base foam. The materials are GREENGUARD Gold-certified, indicating compliance with emissions standards. They are also Certi-PUR-US-certified, meaning the mattress is free from heavy metals, retardants, and ozone depleters. Finally, the mattress doesn’t use any fiberglass in the materials, according to Nolah’s website.

Price: Finally, this mattress, though not a budget pick, is highly affordable compared to some competitors. This means people who want to invest in a great mattress but don’t want to spend money on more expensive luxury mattress brands might find their sweet spot here.

Who the Nolah Evolution Mattress Would Suit

The Nolah is surprisingly great for stomach sleepers − which is not the norm. Many mattresses cause stomach sleepers to end up with an arch in their lower back and an achy body by morning. On the contrary, this mattress helps maintain correct positioning regardless of which way you sleep.

The Nolah Evolution is also great for side sleepers, thanks to that pressure relief feature and the way it eliminates pain in the hips, knees, and elsewhere. This is one of the most notable features of using the bed, and side sleepers who have aches and pains will notice the difference.

Finally, the mattress is perfect for anyone wanting to invest in a mattress of luxurious quality and solid construction but not spend a fortune doing so.

My Verdict After Sleeping on the Nolah Evolution for 30 Nights

In the process of testing this mattress and others, I’ve come to know quickly which will go the distance when it comes to comfort, and which will end up with a disappointing lump in the middle a few months in and grouchy people who didn’t sleep well.

The Japanese practice known as 'Kaizen,' which translates to 'improvement,' or 'change for the better,' has helped me quickly make a significant improvement in the way I sleep.

The main benefits for better rest, I've found, have come from a realization that even the smallest changes can have a real impact, and I don't have to have a major behavioural or habit overhaul to see positive results, making this a really low-stress method you can quickly implement at home.

How to Use This Technique for Sleep

To fall asleep fast − and stay in a restful state − bringing in small, steady improvements which work for you, such as starting a bedtime reading or journaling routine, is a simple way to help you unwind, drift off faster, and rest more deeply all night.

These micro-changes draw on the Japanese philosophy of Kaizen, which relies on making incremental changes over time, and is often used in business or more generally for continuous improvement.

As resident Sleep Editor, I decided to apply this mindful method to my evening routine, and was delighted to fall asleep faster than before, without wakeups, despite the current stifling heatwave in my region.

I personally felt my evening routine was part of my difficulty getting to sleep, and therefore switching something simple was my aim. I paired gentle exercise in the evening with allocating time to read in bed. It has worked beautifully, and I've found my evenings are much more relaxing.

Why Applying the Kaizen Philosophy to Sleep Works

Hannah Shore, Head of Sleep Science at Mattress Online, explains, 'Everything can be improved, nothing is perfect, and even small improvements can make a big impact. This method isn’t just for sleep; it can be applied to all aspects of life and is often used within business models.'

Like your preferred sleep position, the best activities to roll into your evening routine will be unique and interchangeable. Personally, I've found that running and yoga in the evening help me sleep better, and pair perfectly with reading my current book club pick in bed as I wind down, which is definitely my top recommendation for screen-free evening relaxation.

'You have to find something that works for you that calms your mind and relaxes your body,' explains Hannah. 'Breath work and mindfulness are great if that works for you, but find something different if they don’t.

'Reading a book can work, just make sure that it’s not a page turner, as this can create excitement and push you to stay awake.'

This is something I can definitely relate to − I planned to just read a few pages last night and ended up staying up and finishing my whole book. It did help me sleep in the end, though, so it's all about balance.

'Similarly, TVs are the same; if they help you switch off, then great, just make sure you are watching something that you have seen before, so you are not forcing yourself to stay awake for the ending,' adds Hannah.

More generally, says Hannah, try something for a week, maybe two, and see if it helps. If not, pivot to something else that does work, to take advantage of this little-known Japanese sleep secret.

Setting your thermostat to 65° Fahrenheit might be the expert-approved temperature for getting a good night's sleep, but achieving this in your bedroom can be tricky, not to mention expensive, in May.

But as our sleep experts assure, though you may be running your AC, fans, and air purifiers as much as you can afford, there are actually a few free ways that achieve the same result, with zero cost.

Here, they share their professional know-how on keeping a bed cool in summer, without spiking your bills.

Why 65°F is the Optimum Temperature for Sleep in May

As Sleep Medicine Physician Dr. Funke Afolabi-Brown, CEO at Restful Sleep, explains, 'A room temperature range between 60 and 72 is ideal because variations in our core body temperature, which is regulated by our body's circadian rhythm, drop in the evening and coincide with our brain's melatonin secretion. Having a cool room environment further promotes this temperature drop and improves our sleep quality.'

That's why, if your bedroom is too warm as summer temperatures build up, your brain will stay in alert mode, making it more difficult to fall asleep fast.

And, as humidity levels begin rising in May, preventing sweat evaporation and stalling the body's natural cooling system, it can be more difficult than ever to cool down your sleep space.

1. Don't Just Open a Window; Create a Vacuum

One of the very simplest ways to cool your bedroom space cleverly involves using one of the best fans and opening your window to maximize airflow. Place the fan outward in one window to suck the warm air out, and open a window on the shaded side of your house to draw cool air in.

Drew Miller, Sleep Expert with Sit ’n Sleep, explains, 'This setup helps create airflow that pushes hot air out while pulling cooler air in, improving circulation and preventing heat from getting trapped indoors. Better airflow helps your body release heat more efficiently.'

'As with other aspects of sleep, it all comes down to controlling the microclimate,' says Dr. Jordan. 'Materials used for bedclothes influence whether the heat is trapped or dissipated. For example, thick fabric and silky finishes usually don't allow heat and moisture to escape, which is why switching to cotton or percale may be beneficial.'

When it comes to finding the right mattress firmness, I've spoken with a wealth of experts on how to determine it and what to avoid. But, on a recent trip to Vispring's famed showroom, I learned an unexpected rule from the supplier to royalty that's changed the way I'll buy mattresses forever.

The key, as the Showroom Manager Andrew Soule explained during the tour in the heart of London and just a mile from Buckingham Palace, has less to do with what you might think suits you and more to do with your body weight.

As the official mattress suppliers for all suites and cabins on the Titanic, the rooms at The Dorchester in London, and the Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles, and even a King's Award to their name, there's no doubt that the experts at Vispring know a thing or two about finding your best mattress.

The Vispring Advice on Choosing Your Perfect Mattress

This is something that Andrew also highlighted, stressing that, while many people think they need a firm sleep surface to combat aches and pains, this approach could actually be a direct hindrance, rather than a help.

'The right tension should gently cradle the body, supporting the spine in correct alignment for a truly restful night’s sleep,' continues Clare. 'While personal preference plays a role, we recommend using body weight as a key guide to finding the best fit.

'Every Vispring mattress is defined by two elements: Tension and feel. Tension, created by the springs, provides the support your body needs, while feel comes from layers of natural materials such as wool, cotton, horsehair, and silk, which create a soft, breathable, and luxurious surface. Together, they work in harmony to deliver both comfort and support.'

So, to help you sleep better and determine which mattress will suit you, as a general guide, Clare advises that Soft tension suits those up to 154 lbs (70 kg), Medium from 154 to 225 (70-102 kg), Firm from 225 to 280 (102 to 127 kg), and Extra Firm for those over 280 lbs (127 kg).

Why Does This Method Work to Ensure the Right Support?

'This approach works because the level of support a mattress provides is directly influenced by how your body weight interacts with the springs,' advises Clare. 'This allows the mattress to distribute weight evenly and maintain correct spinal alignment throughout the night.'

'By selecting the appropriate tension for your weight, the springs can compress and respond as intended,' adds Clare. 'If a mattress is too soft, the body can sink excessively and fall out of alignment; if it’s too firm, it won’t contour enough to support natural curves.

'Choosing the right tension ensures the springs and natural fillings work in harmony, delivering balanced support, comfort, and minimal disturbance as you move,' which is particularly important if you share your bed with a partner.

How This Works to Offset Common Sleep-Related Aches and Pains

Even the very best sleep positions are often not enough to combat sleep-related aches and pains entirely.

But, as Clare emphasizes, 'Choosing the correct mattress tension can play a significant role in alleviating common sleep-related aches and pains. When the tension is suited to your body weight, the mattress is able to respond as intended, contouring to your shape, supporting the spine in proper alignment, and distributing weight evenly across the surface.

'This is particularly important around key pressure points such as the hips, shoulders, and lower back. A mattress that is too soft may allow the body to sink and strain these areas, while one that is too firm may not provide enough contouring to relieve pressure. The right balance helps the body rest in a more natural, supported position.'

Of course, as Clare appreciates, a mattress is not a medical solution. But, she concludes, 'Selecting the correct tension can make a meaningful difference in reducing everyday discomfort and improving overall sleep quality.'

As I recently found out, Japan is a place where everything just feels better. The streets are cleaner, the food is more flavorful − and the pillows are cooler.

Putting aside memory foam, down, and synthetic materials, every pillow I slept on in Japan was defined by a distinctive layer of buckwheat husks. They were surprisingly comfortable and supportive, with impressive breathability and cooling properties.

After just a few nights, it didn't take long for me to realize that my previous assumption of what makes the best pillows had changed drastically. Now, I'm looking to buy one for my own bedroom back home.

Centuries-Old Japanese Sobakawa Pillows Are the Secret to Cool Pillows All Night

There's no doubt that pillows are taken seriously in Japan − I even stayed in a hotel in Kyoto that featured an entire pillow wall for selecting your desired loft, fill, and fluffiness, with a 'Ladies only' section and eight different types to choose from, including one made from Japanese Hinoki cypress wood. But it was the buckwheat pillows, also known as Sobakawa, that I grew to love.

Admittedly, during the first part of my 15-day trip around Japan, I wasn't always even sure what it was that was filling my pillows with small, hard lumps, and I thought they were likely the same beans that you'd usually find in a beanbag. It was only when I kept finding myself sleeping so comfortably, and waking without any neck pain, even in my side-sleeping position, that I decided to look into it.

As Maiko Shimazaki, the founder of Revitalist15, a New York-based wellness brand rooted in Japanese relaxation rituals, explains, 'Sobakawa pillows are traditional Japanese pillows filled with buckwheat hulls. They are a great alternative to conventional pillows and may provide better sleep for those who prefer a firmer feel, sleep hot, or struggle with allergies.'

She's right − the husks allow air to circulate to keep the pillow dry, helping to keep a bed cool in summer, and warm in winter. For that reason, they're suitable for year-round use.

Those hypoallergenic and natural qualities are important, too. Down may feel luxurious, but it does come with ethical concerns for animal welfare (a reason I always avoid it) and is often not best recommended due to its ability to trap dust, too.

And, while synthetic alternatives may be cruelty-free, suitable for vegans, and usually far more affordable, the polyester, polyester fiberfill, or memory foam filling comes with a significant carbon footprint, and isn't biodegradable, either.

In contrast, natural Sokabawa pillows are highly sustainable, eco-friendly, made from natural, renewable materials, and they also last significantly longer than other alternatives.

'Buckwheat hulls do not compress or break down like down, foam, or synthetic fiber fills,' adds Maiko. 'As a result, sobakawa pillows provide consistent support throughout the night and over the years,' meaning you can use them for far longer before your pillow begins to ruin your sleep quality.

There's just one drawback to consider, highlights Maiko, but it's not something I ever noticed in my experience, which is that Sokobawa pillows are firmer, and therefore not suitable for those who prefer softer pillows.

However, I actually only ever opt for extremely soft, flat pillows, and never found them too firm or too lofty, and, in any case, you can always remove some of the filling to find your preferred height.

Instead, much like how the Japanese traditional futons I slept on kept me comfortable and supported all night long, despite my initial reservations, my experience with Sokabawa pillows had me sleeping better than ever before.

One of the fundamental rules of Feng Shui, when it comes to the bedroom space, is a distinct lack of mirrors. The reasoning is simple – a mirror reflecting your bedspace can drain your energy, and invite unwanted energy into your bedroom.

That's why, when recently staying in a ryokan, or traditional inn, in Japan, I was intrigued to see a particularly clever Feng Shui feature: The full-length mirror was hidden behind a dedicated door, easily opened when needed, and closed away ahead of bedtime.

According to experts, it's one of the best ways to follow the all-important Feng Shui mirror rules, without compromising on convenience. Here's why.

As Suzanne Butler, Feng Shui Consultant and founder at Harmonising Energies, explains, 'In Feng Shui, mirrors are considered powerful tools that direct and double the energy, or Qi, of what is reflected. While they are useful for making a room look larger during the day, they can become "active" disruptors at night.'

That's not the only reason that it's important to consider where mirrors should be placed in a bedroom for Feng Shui, either. Suzanne Roynon, Feng Shui Expert, Interiors Therapist, and Founder of Interiors Therapy, adds, 'Mirrors amplify the energy in a room, which can lead to restlessness and poor quality sleep.'

Additionally, she warns, a mirror is said to invite infidelity in a relationship – 'bringing in the energy of a third or fourth person in the reflection' – and can also encourage ghosts and spirits into the room, all of which interfere with restful sleep.

So, after recently researching and talking to experts about bedroom Feng Shui earlier this year, I was particularly interested (and impressed) to see the cleverly hidden mirror at our hotel in Japan.

It's an easy way to avoid any negative effects of the mirror, but it made getting ready for dinner and in the morning easy, as I didn't have to leave the room entirely to see my reflection. And, throughout the night, I didn't encounter any energy shifts or disruption as I slept, either.

'By closing the door on a wall-mounted mirror, you effectively "pause" that active energy, allowing the room to become a true Yin sanctuary,' advises Suzanne Butler.

Alternative, Easy Ways to Cover Mirrors In Your Bedroom Space

Of course, not every bedroom space includes a mirror with a dedicated door. But, to enjoy all the beauty and benefits of Japanese-inspired interiors, it doesn't have to.

'You can still achieve the same results with methods to mask the reflection,' says Suzanne Butler.

• Decorative textiles: Drape a high-quality silk scarf or a linen throw over a floor-length mirror. 'This adds a soft, tactile element to the room that absorbs rather than reflects,' she explains, though it can make a space look cluttered and messy,
• Pivot: If you have a freestanding mirror, simply rotate it to face the wall or a corner before getting into bed.
• Folding screens: Placing a decorative folding screen in front of a fixed mirror to hide the glass and add a touch of flair to your space. I recommend the Japanese-inspired RISÖR Room Divider, available at IKEA, for this.
• Frosted window film: 'If you already have mirror wardrobes and changing the doors simply isn’t practical, frosting the mirror is one option, self-adhesive decals are another,' says Suzanne Roynon. As morning nears, the cortisol hormone is released to aid in easier waking. That's why having more natural light aids waking.

To easily achieve this cortisol-regulating benefit in your sleep environment, regardless of your location, you can switch your normal bedside lamp bulbs for smart ones and alter the hue to something more beneficial. Dr. Andrew Gall is an Associate Professor of Psychology at Hope College and a Neuroscientist who studies the neural mechanisms and functions of sleep, including how light affects circadian rhythms.

'This is likely because your traditional alarm clock woke you up during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, which is a time when our brain activity mismatches that during wakefulness.'

Having just arrived back from two weeks in Japan, so many things amazed me. From the culture to the food, every aspect of the country was a complete delight – and none more so, as a Sleep Editor, than the beds.

In general, our city-based hotel bedrooms in Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto came in a range of different shapes and sizes of small. But when we stayed in two traditional ryokans, or inns, along the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route, tiny city spaces with plush Western mattresses gave way to expansive tatami mats, sliding shoji doors, and traditional futons, rolled out at bedtime.

As someone who spends their days researching the best mattresses money can buy, I was more than intrigued to spend the night on something far harder and flatter – and honestly found that I slept better than ever before. I Had the Best Sleep of My Life on a Traditional Japanese Futon

Maybe it was the hours spent hiking and looking around temples, but kicking off my wooden sandals and flopping down on my traditional Japanese futon in the complete silence and darkness of our ryokan in the small hot spring town of Kawayu Onsen, sleep found me almost instantly.

I'd been skeptical – with so little between me and the floor, would this humble futon really be enough to support my side sleep position, and keep me comfortable all night long?

The answer, unequivocally, was yes. Come morning, I'd slept uninterrupted throughout the night and woke without any of the usual aches, pains, or typical signs you're sleeping on a bad mattress. Luckily, you don't have to go all the way to Japan to enjoy it, with Walmart stocking Japanese floor futons affordably.

I found the same thing the next night, when we stopped at Hotel Urashima, high on a hill in Kii-Katsuura. After our table and chairs were pushed aside, and futons laid out, I, once again, had a stellar night's sleep, and felt well rested once morning rolled back around, with no pain or stiffness to speak of.

He explains, 'Futons provide a firm, evenly-distributed surface that helps keep the spine in neutral alignment and doesn’t allow for hips or shoulders to sink unevenly. I often find that back pain is linked to excessive sag in the mattress, especially in lumbar spine comfort.

'An arguably tighter support base can take some pressure off this during the night. Moreover, sleeping near the ground inherently limits the strange twisting movements that may help those with low back pain, given sacroiliac joint irritation.

'It isn’t about hard versus soft but maintaining a steady load that the body can predict and respond to.'

The common misconception that sleeping on a harder, flatter surface, like that of a futon mattress, will result in a bad back is simply not true (in most cases). After all, there's a reason they're so common in Japan – a nation that's consistently ranked as one of the healthiest and longest-living worldwide.

'Futons promote daily mobility, balance, and strength, resulting in an increased awareness of your body and the ability to move more efficiently,' adds Dr. Miller. 'They relieve pressure points, especially for back sleepers, which means less morning stiffness because joints don’t “sink and stiffen” overnight.'

In any case, I'm sold, and genuinely would consider a futon mattress for when I move later in the year, if I didn't already have a Japanese-style bed, complete with tatami mats, ready to move with me.

What I have learned, though, is that you don't need a plush, expensive mattress filled with layers of foam, fibers, and springs, even if you suffer from common aches and pains. Instead, sometimes, the simplest solutions bring the serenest sleep.

Your bedside table arguably works harder than any other surface in your bedroom. It's where you place your bedtime book, mug of tea, or a thoughtful trinket or plant that gives you joy – but all too often, this space can end up cluttered and chaotic.

To Feng Shui experts, though, it's not the visual noise that's the problem, per se. Instead, there's one category of items they urge you must remove from your bedside table this April: Electronics.

It's not just about curating a more serene sleep space, either. Doing so can also help you to sleep better, by supporting deeper rest, and helping to make both falling asleep and waking in the morning easier.

Why You Should Remove Electronics From Your Bedside Table This April

As Beverly Biehl, Founder of The Intuitive Interior, says, most bedside tables have room for a lamp, a book, lip balm, a glass of water, and perhaps a dream journal, such as the JUBTIC Dream Journal, available at Amazon. But, she warns, 'All too many now host a laptop, an e-reader, and at least one phone.

'The e-reader isn't connected to the internet, so it can stay, but the laptop and the phone – especially the phone – must find a new place to live overnight.'

She explains that the main reason for this, in terms of Feng Shui, is that they are energetically noisy. 'All of that WiFi-connecting and text and email pinging literally acts as miniature finger-pokes, trying to get your attention when you are attempting to sleep,' and making it far more difficult to fall asleep fast.

'Even with the Do Not Disturb feature turned on, many will still notice when someone texts. The intended signal is still there, even while muted. WiFi works when there is a constant back and forth with the cell towers, and texts and emails are another form of this electronic back and forth. Our bodies, being largely electrical processors, get overheated when exposed to this for hours at a time.'

This isn't so much of a problem during the day. As Beverly adds, we can cool off by getting up to use the bathroom, grabbing a snack, or walking outside.

'At night, though, we are supposed to be sleeping for eight hours at a stretch,' she advises. 'If we have all of this electrical activity happening, our brain still overheats, even as it's trying to process all of the information it downloaded during the day. It takes a lot of energy to sort, sift, and decide what to keep and what to file away or purge!

'This is why most people sleep better in a cooler environment after all. So when we have these highly 'yang' items next to us, we add heat just at the moment when our body and brain need 'yin,' and don't get me started about how much yang a television in the bedroom adds! Yikes!'

Beverly isn't the only Feng Shui consultant to feel strongly about electronics in the bedroom space, either, and why they're certainly items to never store on your nightstand.

Katherine Troyer, Feng Shui Expert and Home Energetics Practitioner at My Home Energetics, adds, 'From a Feng Shui and nervous system perspective, the bedside area should support deep rest and a gentle transition into the day.

'Phones introduce constant stimulation and subtly signal alertness, even when they are silent. When the first thing you see in the morning is a screen, your brain immediately shifts into information-processing mode rather than body awareness.'

What to Do Instead

Fortunately, the fix is simple. 'The solution is the creation of a bedtime ritual for your phone and laptop, and any other Wi-Fi-enabled device,' advises Beverly. 'Offer them a recharging station of their own, so they feel honored and respected,' though keep this out of the bedroom, of course, and give them a 'good wipe-down with a cleaning cloth, just as you wash your own face.' Additionally, Beverly suggests using an analog clock radio that has a battery backup to make sure you don't miss your alarm. The ROBERTS Revival Rest Bluetooth Clock Radio, available at Selfridges, is currently top of my wish list.

'Give up the idea that your bed is a good office to do your work from,' continues Beverly. 'It's not. You end up with terrible posture, back pain, and zero sleep hygiene. Creating a yin space is best achieved when the space is dark, cool, and uncluttered, especially under the bed if possible,' which will also help you to avoid falling foul to the popular underbed storage habit that's the leading cause of hidden mattress mold.

'I also recommend keeping a glass of water beside the bed,' adds Katherine. 'Instead of reaching for notifications, you begin the day by giving something back to your body.'

Now that spring is here, days are longer, lighter, and brighter. While this may be prematurely waking you up in the morning, so too can spring allergies, like dust, dander, and pollen.

For that reason, there's one simple switch that air quality experts suggest making this season – and it's as easy as swapping your curtains out for shutters.

Not only will this keep allergies at bay, but doing so also has the added benefits of keeping your sleep space darker and helping to maintain the optimum temperature for better sleep, working hand in hand with the best cooling mattress topper.

Why Experts Recommend Switching Curtains to Shutters This Spring

Here, air quality experts explain why curtains might be contributing to any air quality mistakes you're making at home, and why spring is the perfect time to make the change.

As Rick Hoskins, HVAC, air quality expert, and CEO at Filter King, explains, though curtains are a classic choice when it comes to bedroom window treatments, they are, unfortunately, a magnet for dust and allergens.

'Compared to other fabric surfaces in a home, they’re rarely cleaned, so dust continues to build up,' he says. 'Plus, curtains produce static electricity, so all the dust particles stick to them. Even the most powerful HVAC system and return duct will not be able to dislodge them from the curtains.

'Over time, this can have a noticeable effect on the air quality inside a house. Most people will try to clean their carpets and furniture upholstery to make it better, but the hidden culprit is often the curtains.'

And, even if you know how to wash and care for curtains and drapes, a common problem can be more to do with timing, more specifically, knowing how often you should wash curtains.

For that reason, Eli Zimmer, CEO of Luxaire HVAC Services, says, 'Air-quality-wise, shutters are generally better than curtains, because they don't trap as much dust, pollen, or other airborne particles.

'This is because shutters are made from a solid material – usually something like wood – whereas curtains are made with fabric. Fabric is porous and has fibers that can trap a lot of particles in the air.

'So, with shutters, especially if you stay on top of dusting them, usually there are fewer particles accumulated that might negatively impact your sleep due to impacting your breathing.'

Ryan Osterkamp, owner at Quality Comfort Home Services, agrees, and urges you to think of how quickly dust, hair and dirt build up on your bedsheets and blankets, and how your curtains will hold onto dust and allergens in the same way, particularly as people don't typically tend to wash their curtains nearly as often as they wash, dry, and care for their bed linen.

'It's also not as easy to clean curtains as shutters, as shutters can just be wiped down instead of going through the laundry or getting vacuumed,' he adds. 'Shutters offer better insulation than curtains, as well. Uncomfortable nighttime temperatures can mess with the quality of your sleep, even if you don't realize they are.'

In fact, the perfect thermostat setting for sleep is between 65 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit, and, as Ryan highlights, shutters make this far easier to maintain.

There's one more benefit, too – shutters are an easy way to make a bedroom darker.

Livvi DiCicco, certified sleep science coach at Sleepopolis, says, 'I am sensitive to light when I sleep, and have found that room darkening shutters are a game changer. They seal out all light. Room darkening curtains still let in some light around the edges. Plus, the shutters don't inhibit airflow like curtains do.'

There are just a couple of things to consider before you make the switch, though. 'On the flip side, most shutters are more expensive than curtains, especially if you have them professionally installed,' continues Livvi. 'Their installation process also means you can't just swap them out like curtains.'

Other Ways to Improve Air Quality for Better Sleep

If you aren't quite ready, or don't have the budget, to switch your curtains to shutters this spring, there are, luckily, several other ways to improve air quality indoors.

First of all, recommends Rick, 'Replacing a home's HVAC filters can make an enormous improvement to air quality. Most people forget about their filters, but really, they should be replaced every three months.

'They're very affordable, easy to change, and can make a night-and-day difference in a home's air quality.'

You may also choose to invest in one of the best air purifiers that fits your budget.

'My husband has some pretty heavy-duty allergies,' says Livvi. 'Therefore, we started using an air purifier in our bedroom. The Dyson purifier [available at Dyson] is fantastic, but it comes with Dyson prices. I am a big fan of the Levoit air purifier,' available at Amazon.

For another option, our Home Tech Editor, Dan Fauzi, who has asthma and allergies, rated the Shark NeverChange Air Purifier, also available at Amazon, the best on test, and has been using it in their own home for over a year. During this time, they have seen a 90% reduction in flares.

Additionally, says Sean Holtom, controller at Top Hat Home Comfort Services, 'It also helps to keep humidity in check. Air that’s too dry or too humid can make it harder to breathe comfortably at night. 'On top of that, small habits go a long way,' adds Sean. 'Change your HVAC filter regularly, wash your bedding often, and vacuum with a good filter. All of that keeps the air cleaner so you can sleep more comfortably.'

Alternatively, and most affordably, Eli also suggests keeping your bedroom door open as much as possible during the day, and regularly opening your window, even if just for a few minutes, which are both 'beneficial because they improve ventilation in your room,' he says.

I Always Swap to This Whimsical IKEA Bedding Come Spring

If, like me, you live in a home without air-conditioning, you'll know how tricky it can be to keep your home cool. While this is uncomfortable during the day, I usually find respite and enjoyment out in my yard, but it's when nighttime approaches that I find myself seriously struggling to keep my bed cool in summer.

The moment the bitter winter chill gave way to intermittently bright and mild spring weather, my warm duvet, which had kept me so cozy in winter, felt suffocating. However, I’ve since got my hands on a cooling IKEA duvet insert, and I have been so impressed.

It has brought me the perfect combination of thermoregulation for spring, when we’re not yet at sweltering temperatures, but certain nights can feel as balmy as a summer’s day and heatwaves are now sneaking in.

After testing it in my home for a few weeks, I no longer wake up in a panic of heat. I have also found it possible to sleep better and more restfully through the night under this cover and have been drifting off with ease.

I found it interesting as well that I didn’t wake up cold at any point either. I also ran it on another wash cycle and through the dryer to check if it would shrink, bunch or otherwise get ruined, and there was zero negative impact. The item is actually deemed suitable by IKEA for use in inns and B&Bs for its robust construction which withstand high volumes of washes.

The GRUSNARV Waterproof mattress protector is comfortable, non-cumbersome, and quiet (some can sound very crinkly), even when you toss and turn throughout the night.

Straight out of the packaging, the protector was ready to pop straight onto the mattress, and fitted perfectly, even once I made the bed, thanks to the slim-profile design. I didn't notice any odors, either, which I've often noticed when I open brand new bedding.

Once bedtime came, I didn't notice the protector at all. There was no heat discomfort or rustling under my body. That's not to say it made me sleep better, but it certainly didn't disturb my sleep either, even when my partner or I turned or moved in the night.

What Happened When I Tried It

As a Sleep Editor, I've seen how this method can work firsthand, as it's an essential part of my spring sleep reset.

During the spring weeks, when I have to be up at 7 am for work days in the office, I leave my curtains wide open overnight to fill my space with natural light and wake me without the jolt of my alarm in the morning.

When the weather permits, I leave the window a little open, too, to allow fresh air to circulate while I sleep, and naturally regulate the temperature of my sleep space overnight. Sleep consultant Maryanne adds, 'When the clocks go forward, our alarm goes off at what feels like an hour earlier to the body. At the same time, evenings become lighter, which can delay the release of melatonin. This combination can temporarily disrupt sleep timing and leave people feeling out of sync.

'Start dimming lighting inside around 60 minutes before bed so your brain gets the clear message that the day is ending and allows for melatonin levels to start building.'

How to Try the 'Dutch Method'

It couldn't be simpler to enjoy the benefits of the Dutch Sleep Method in your own home. All you have to do is leave your bedroom window treatments open when you head to bed, allowing natural light to fill your space when morning comes and as the sun rises.

Maryanne adds, 'In the morning, I’d suggest opening your curtains and blinds as soon as possible. Even step outside briefly if you can. And, if sleeping with your curtains, shutters, or blinds open isn't an option, or you regularly need to be up before the sun, you can always use a sunrise alarm to emulate the same benefits.

Dr. Jordan Burns, sleep expert at Amerisleep, says that the first thing he notices when assessing someone's well-executed bedroom ideas is their bedroom lighting.

'In my experience, the first thing I see when looking at an effective bedroom for sleep is how well the space eliminates light,' he explains. 'Whether it is from the light of streetlamps, electronics, or even the sun rising, small amounts of ambient light can impact the body’s ability to produce melatonin, thereby disrupting the body’s natural internal clock.

'The use of blackout curtains or layered window treatments is one of the easiest ways to help maintain a dark sleeping environment, which has been scientifically linked to longer and more restorative sleep patterns.'

That's why when organizing a bedroom for better sleep, sleep experts always recommend clearing visual clutter there.

To follow the golden rules for a clutter-free bedroom, as Dr. Jordan suggests, use closed storage as much as possible, keep floors clear, and always put clothes away or in your laundry hamper as soon as you fold them or take them off.

If you've never heard of a 'sleep divorce,' you might not even be aware that you're going through one. But if bedtime with your partner has become one of the most stressful parts of the day, and you regularly find yourself waking lethargic and unrefreshed, choosing to sleep separately could be the answer to a more restful slumber.

You wouldn't be alone, either. A 2024 study found that 29% of Americans opted to sleep separately from their partner*, rising to 31% in 2025.**

So, what are the signs you're going through sleep divorce, and which steps can you take to sleep better, either with or without your partner, long-term? Here, our sleep experts reveal all.

3 Signs You're Going Through a Sleep Divorce

As Kathryn Pinkham, sleep expert at Silentnight, highlights, the idea of a so-called sleep divorce might sound dramatic, but it's actually far more practical than people realize.

'Sharing a bed is often treated like the ultimate sign of closeness, so when it stops working, couples can feel like something must be wrong,' she explains. 'But poor sleep makes us more irritable, more emotional, and less resilient.'

Here are the signs to keep an eye out for:

1. There Is Chronic Nighttime Conflict

When I say 'nighttime conflict,' this may not refer to actual conflict. This might instead manifest as having different sleep patterns.

'Some people naturally feel sleepy early, while others are more alert later in the evening,' explains Kathryn. 'Problems can start when couples try to force the same routine.'

After all, if you go to bed before you're genuinely ready for sleep, no amount of sleep hacks will help you drift off. Instead, lying awake can leave you frustrated, and that tension can only make getting to sleep even harder.

According to sleep expert Dr. Saema Tahir, MD., this may also show more literally as a growing bedtime resentment, whether that be irritability, tension, or anxiety specifically associated with nighttime. 'Research consistently shows that sleep deprivation increases emotional reactivity and conflict,' she advises.

To combat this, Dr. Joseph Dzierzewski, Senior Vice President of Research and Scientific Affairs at the National Sleep Foundation, advises treating the problem like a shared project, not as a personal flaw.

'Couples who identify the specific disruptor, whether it be snoring, light, noise, or mismatched schedules, and tackle it together, with earplugs, white noise, aligned bedtimes, or medical evaluation for sleep apnoea, can see improvement,' he explains.

'When sleep becomes protective rather than restorative, that pattern deserves attention,' says Dr. Tahir. 'Consistent relocation to another sleep space to function the next day signals unresolved sleep disruption.'

Dr. Joseph agrees, calling this the 'clearest behavioral marker.' Fortunately, separate sleep doesn't have to mean separate lives, and you might not even need to use your guest bedroom or sofa bed moving forward.

'Planned sleep arrangements, whether that be scheduled co-sleeping nights or separate weekday sleep spaces, can optimize restorative sleep while preserving connection,' recommends Dr. Tahir. 'Evidence shows that chronic sleep restriction increases cortisol levels, decreases frustration tolerance, and heightens conflict. Protecting sleep protects relational stability.'

You may also, adds Dr. Joseph, choose to create a shared winddown routine, before adjourning to separate rooms. For example, you could burn your best candle, read a book, watch a movie, or even meditate together.

'When disrupted sleep becomes consistent and starts affecting daytime functioning or relationship satisfaction, it’s a sign that adjustments may be necessary.'

'Better sleep reduces emotional reactivity, and couples who work towards better sleep together are more likely to see gains,' he advises.

Ultimately, though, if you sleep better separately, it's a solution, not a failure.

'Sleeping apart doesn’t mean your relationship is in trouble,' says Kathryn. 'For some couples, it’s simply a way of protecting both their sleep and their relationship.'

Dr. Joseph echoes Kathryn's thoughts and stresses that it's important to remember that a 'sleep divorce' isn't inherently bad – and that many couples actually sleep better when they approach it intentionally.

'A sleep divorce also isn’t a relationship failure; it’s a sleep strategy,' he says. 'When couples choose separate sleep spaces intentionally, with clear communication and a plan to stay emotionally connected, it can strengthen both their sleep and their relationship.'

March is the perfect time for a spring sleep reset, as the season brings brighter mornings, fluctuating temperatures, pollen, and longer days, all of which can disrupt your rest.

Managing earlier sunrises and improving air quality, updating your bedding weight, and resetting temperature controls are just some of the ways you can redress the delicate balance needed for truly restorative sleep.

Our experts recommend focusing on seven easy fixes in your bedroom this month to help you sleep better in spring and into summer, and help usher calm into your sanctuary.

The 7 Easy Tweaks to Make Now for the Great Spring Sleep Reset

1. Block Earlier Sunrises Without Making the Room Feel Heavy

By far the most common thing that will disrupt your slumber in spring is those bright, beautiful mornings. While there's nothing better than opening your curtains to let this light in after a long and dark winter, earlier sunrises advance your circadian rhythm by triggering cortisol release, and you certainly don't want this waking you up before your usual alarm, or on weekends.

As Dr. Andrea Matsumura, board-certified Sleep Medicine physician, explains, 'Even if you don’t fully wake, that light exposure fragments deeper stages of sleep and can leave you feeling unrefreshed.'

Instead of redesigning your whole room to combat these longer nights and earlier sunrises, simply adjust how you control the light that reaches you.

According to Thomas Høegh Reisenhus, TEMPUR Sleep Specialist and Sleep Counsellor, the ideal sleep environment is like a cave – think cool, dark, and quiet, so it's important to ensure there's no unwanted light in your bedroom come bedtime. The easiest way to achieve this, he says, is with blackout curtains, available at Wayfair.

'Designed to block out all external light that might otherwise disrupt your precious sleep – from the early morning spring sunrise to the glare of streetlamps – installing blackout curtains in your bedroom can be an ideal way to ensure total darkness at night,' he advises.

Add these to your existing curtains rather than fully replacing them – that way, you can easily remove them once fall and winter roll back around, or use them to trap heat and keep your bedroom warm while you sleep in winter. Alternatively, suggests Dr. Andrea, 'Use a well-fitted sleep mask to avoid getting sunlight too early, and maintain your circadian rhythm.'

'In Japan, it is actually recommended to get sunlight early in the day as the days get longer,' she says. 'Waking with the earlier sunrise helps the body sync with the natural rhythm of the season instead of artificially extending the dark hours of winter.

'Help your body acclimate to the earlier spring sunrise by waking earlier and getting sunlight in the morning. Consistency is key – fight the temptation to sleep in on weekends, as irregular wake times can disrupt circadian rhythm.'

If this is something you'd like to try, I'd recommend going analogue with your alarm clock. The classically styled IKEA DEKAD Alarm Clock is a chic and affordable option.

'Shutting out external light will do little to help if you have sleep-disrupting sources of light coming from within your bedroom, so don’t forget to check that any electrical appliances with glowing buttons, for example, are either switched off or safely covered,' adds Thomas.

2. Change Your Duvet Before You Notice Overheating

As soon as the seasons start shifting towards spring, you'll notice how much the nights fluctuate – from warm at bedtime to cold at dawn. As most people wait too long to change out their best bedding, this mismatch can cause micro-awakenings.

'Your core body temperature needs to drop slightly for you to fall and stay asleep,' advises Dr. Andrea. 'Using heavier winter bedding in the spring can trap heat as temperatures rise, leading to subtle overheating that disrupts REM sleep cycles.'

REM is an acronym for Rapid Eye Movement, a repeated and essential part of nightly cycles that helps your brain perform vital, deeper processing as you sleep.

3. Reprogram Your Heating and Ventilation

Though spring officially starts on March 20, many homes remain on winter heating schedules that focus on negating any cold-weather heating mistakes and keeping warm while you sleep.

As soon as temperatures start to rise, though, your radiators or HVAC systems switch on at 5 am, and spike room temperature just as daylight increases, leading to a risk of early and unwanted awakening.

'Sleep is highly sensitive to room temperatures,' warns Dr. Andrea. 'Adjust timers to lower heat at night in spring. Aim for a bedroom temperature of roughly 60-67° Fahrenheit (15-19° Celsius), and introduce gentle ventilation if possible to do so without introducing outside noise.'

This cooler bedroom temperature between 60-70°F is actually the perfect thermostat setting for sleep, and is easy to maintain with a smart thermostat, such as the Sensi Smart Thermostat, available at Amazon.

Additionally, says Noel Fok, CEO and co-founder of EcoAir, this reduction in energy consumption will also help you to cut energy bills.

Dan explains, 'Having one of the best fans means quick cooling at a quiet volume. At the highest fan speeds and while oscillating, it can reach the corners of the room, and at the lowest speed, it's virtually silent while still providing a pleasant relief from the heat.'

Don't forget to make the most of the milder temperatures and enjoy a more natural wake-up call by getting fresh air circulating throughout the house, too, says Noel.

'Open windows in at least two rooms, wedging inner doors open, to allow a cross-draft to move through the home. Not only will this improve the air quality of your home, but the cool spring air will help boost alertness – ideal first thing in the morning.'

4. Reset Air Quality Before Pollen Peaks

Spring pollen and winter dust build-up combine to irritate airways at night, so it's no surprise that a spring sleep reset should include tackling any air quality mistakes.

'With the onset of spring comes every allergy sufferer’s nightmare – pollen,' says Noel. 'Tree pollen is the biggest culprit during the spring months, causing sneezing, itchy eyes, sinus issues, and irritating coughs, whilst grass and weed pollen peak in the summer months.

'And then there’s the issue of pets. A pet shedding its winter coat will contribute more fur, skin cells, and dust to the home than at other times of the year and can trigger allergy symptoms not only for those with pet allergies, but for those who are allergic to the dust mites that feed on pet dander, too.'

To mitigate these issues and their impact on your sleep, start with perfecting your spring cleaning checklist, advises Noel, using non-toxic products, such as the Method All-Purpose Cleaner, available at Amazon. This will combat common allergens, whilst vacuuming your mattress with a mattress vacuum cleaner, also available at Amazon, will ease nightly symptoms.

If you live with pets, be sure to groom them regularly and keep them out of your bedroom, and certainly off your bed.

'It’s well worth considering investing in an air purifier to capture any kind of allergy-triggering particles, like dust, lint, pet dander, and pollens,' adds Noel. 'Removing these from your indoor environment will remove or minimise the risk of symptoms and allow you to enjoy a better night’s sleep.'

According to Dan, the best air purifier is the Shark Air Purifier, available at Amazon, which they've personally been using at home for over a year. Dan adds, 'It's almost entirely stopped my asthma and allergy flares, and I won't go without it now.'

Maiko also recommends airing out your duvet or comforter. 'In Japan, it is a long-standing tradition to air out duvets and mattresses in the sun,' she says. 'Sunlight helps remove moisture, reduce bacteria and dust mites, and restore a duvet’s and mattress’s natural fluffiness. Beyond hygiene, it is also a ritual that reflects Japan’s seasonal and mindful approach to everyday living.'

You can also pull your duvet back and allow the sunshine that's pouring in through your window to work its magic for thirty minutes before you make the bed.

'If placing your duvet outside for direct sun exposure is not an option,' Maiko adds, 'a dryer cycle on low heat works well to remove trapped moisture. Follow this by vacuuming, ideally with a HEPA-filter vacuum and a mattress or upholstery attachment, to remove surface dust, allergens, and dead skin particles.'

That being said, don't hang a wet duvet outside to dry in spring as the pollen in the air will be a problem, warns Noel, 'Damp fabric attracts pollen, so drying bedding and bedclothes outdoors where there is more of a risk of them coming into contact with seasonal pollen is a bad idea. Bed sheets and pillowcases – which are in close contact with bare skin and our faces – are best dried in a tumble dryer as the heat deactivates allergens.

'If you don’t have a dryer, hang your laundry indoors on a clothes airer with your best dehumidifier switched on close by. This is a great alternative to a dryer as it is gentler on fabrics, costs much less to run, and removes excess moisture from the air in the process.'

5. Lighten the Visual Weight of the Room

Spring light is brighter and sharper, which can lead those cozier winter textiles to suddenly feel visually heavy.

'Spring is considered a time of new beginnings in Japan and is the perfect time to reset your bedroom,' says Maiko. 'Reducing visual stimulus lowers cognitive load, making it easier for the brain to power down and enter a restful state.'

To do so, she suggests, declutter your nightstand and use simple bedding with minimal decorative elements – crisp white linens from Bed Threads are my favorite, and always look chic and elegant in any bedroom space.

'Alternatively, decorative boxes or jewelry boxes are a beautiful way to keep small items out of sight,' adds Maiko. The Storybook Jewelry Box, available at Anthropologie, is a gorgeous pick to cleverly hide among any bedroom bookshelf ideas.

'And, finally, be sure to make your bed every morning,' adds Thomas. I do this after I've got ready for the day each morning, to give my bedding time to air out first. 'This simple habit not only helps your bedroom look neat and tidy, but it has also been linked to improved sleep.'

6. Reposition Your Evening Lighting

As Dr. Andrea explains, 'As daylight extends into the evening in spring, your brain receives mixed signals about when to produce melatonin. Bright overhead lighting late in the evening further delays that signal.'

For that reason, it's vital to get your bedroom lighting ideas perfect when adjusting your sleep sanctuary for spring, with softer, lower lighting to clearly signal that nighttime has begun.

Thomas adds, 'As the sun starts to set later, invest in some lamps with bulbs that emit light in warm hues of yellow, orange, or even red, all colours of light which have been linked to causing minimal disruption to your body’s natural circadian rhythms, which are aligned with the light-dark cycles of day and night.

'In contrast, using harsh overhead ceiling lights and any other types of bright artificial lights in the run up to bedtime can disrupt sleep by suppressing the production of melatonin, a hormone which plays a central role in regulating your body’s sleep-wake cycle.'

To light your bedroom for a better night's sleep, I recommend using a warm-toned, soothing salt lamp, available at Amazon, or Japanese-inspired lamps with paper shades, such as the IKEA RISBYN Pendant Lamp Shade, which Maiko says provide soft, ambient lighting that supports a smooth transition into darkness and rest. Position any lamps below eye level for softer diffusion, and add dimmers if possible.

7. Create a 'Lighter Evenings' Wind-Down Zone

Finally, longer spring evenings spent relaxing and socializing outdoors with friends, family, or simply alone, are one of the best parts of the season – but don't let them encourage late nights and overstimulation.

'As we transition into spring, it’s the perfect time to create healthy habits,' says Thomas. 'Exposure to blue light – which is often emitted from electronic devices such as phones – is believed to be particularly disruptive when it comes to falling asleep. For this reason, keep your room a screen-free space; any phones, televisions, and laptops should be kept to areas of the house where the primary function is not sleep.'

To help with this, try keeping a great book or journal on your bedside table, to reduce temptation to take your phone to bed and, in turn, minimize time spent texting friends, catching up on emails, or scrolling social media before bed, he advises.

While a Kindle PaperWhite, available from Amazon, has a small amount of blue light, it's significantly less than a tablet or phone, and can be adjusted to warmer hues, if you prefer to have a bank of digital books for bedtime or struggle to hold books due to neck or wrist pain.

You should also avoid any late-night stimulants, like caffeine, alcohol, and heavy meals, and you may like to use your best candle or best essential oil diffuser to scent your space.

'Scent cues are particularly effective because the olfactory system connects directly to the limbic system, which regulates emotion and stress,' adds Maiko. 'Choose a calming scent such as sandalwood or lavender and use it consistently so the brain builds an association with rest.'

This Common Storage Solution Can Cause Mold on Your Mattress

Hidden bedroom storage buys are essential for any bedroom, particularly if you're working with small bedroom layouts. But, warns Cathy Orr, co-founder of The Uncluttered Life, storing items under your bed could be the root cause of lurking mold and mildew.

'First and foremost, underbed storage causes mold, mildew, and bacteria to grow because it blocks air flow,' she explains. 'Mattresses need air flow underneath them so that moisture doesn’t get trapped.

'They also need air movement to dry out from sweat and humidity. This is especially true for foam mattresses,' and is a particular problem as you struggle to keep a bed cool in summer, as your mattress stays damp, unnoticed, for long periods of time. Importantly, by the time a musty odor appears, mold damage has usually already been done.

Cathy adds that underbed storage can both encourage and make it more difficult to get rid of dust mites and small indoor pests such as opportunistic insects.

'This is because under-bed storage collects dust and traps warmth,' she shares. 'For this reason, it encourages bugs to locate there. This can trigger allergies and stain your mattress.'

Chris Townsend, home moving expert at Three Movers, also highlights that underbed storage may also get in the way of any efforts you make to sleep better, as dense objects push upward against the base, creating uneven pressure points and gradually distorting your best mattress.

'People don't always make the connection between what's stored under the bed and how well they're sleeping,' he advises. 'But a mattress that's been warped in certain areas will affect your posture and comfort, even if it looks fine on the surface.'

How to Prevent Your Underbed Storage Causing Mold on Your Mattress

Chris advises using fabric or ventilated storage bags, such as the Amazon Basics Under Bed Fabric Bags, available at Amazon, rather than airtight plastic containers, which can trap humidity and prevent moisture from dispersing naturally.

'It's a small switch that makes a real difference,' he shares. 'Plastic containers are great for keeping dust out, but they seal in humidity too. Fabric storage bags let the air do its job, which is better for your mattress and for the items you're storing.'

Just make sure to leave a few inches of clearance space on either side of your storage bags to allow air to move.

For added circulation space, Joan Rowley, founder of OCD Organized, adds, 'Bed risers are a great addition to elevate the bed, allowing more air flow. If still an issue, use products such as DampRid Moisture Absorbers, available at Amazon, that assist with absorbing the moisture. They come in many variations.'

Whichever solution you choose, make sure you check for dampness regularly, advises Chris, who recommends pulling everything out every few months to check for any signs of moisture or mold on the floor, bed frame, and underside of the mattress.

'Catching early signs of dampness before they develop into a mold problem is far easier than dealing with the consequences later,' he says. And, as Cathy highlights, this is the perfect opportunity to declutter and organize the area under your bed, which is commonly deemed one of the dirtiest places in a bedroom.

'Vacuum and let the mattress air out for at least 30 minutes to allow for circulation,' she advises, before replacing items. If you have dogs, you'll know the soothing impact their company can bring while enjoying a movie or getting lost in your favorite book. With four dogs at home, I know just how special this privilege can be. But if there's one place mine are never allowed to rest, it's my bed.

For many pet owners, this may seem a controversial take, and whilst experts agree that there are pros and cons to be considered either way, as a Sleep Editor, I know that no disturbances and a clean sanctuary are essential for sleeping better.

Why I Never Let My Dogs Sleep On My Bed

Unfortunately, if you're a pet owner who doesn't mind sharing your bed with your pet, Dr. Mike Gradisar, Head of Sleep Science at Sleep Cycle, agrees with me. 'The evidence is clear that, despite our preference for pets sleeping with us on the bed, our pets’ movements do disturb our sleep,' he explains.

In fact, a ScienceDirect study, entitled The effects of bed sharing on sleep: From partners to pets, found that, while nearly half of dog and cat owners share their bed with their pet, available data does suggest that doing so can hurt your sleep and rest, as your pet moves, stretches, snores, or leaves the bed.

On top of that, adds Sleep Specialist Dr. Saema Tahir, M.D., 'Pets bring dander, dirt, and other allergens into your sleep space, which can trigger allergies or asthma in some people. That being said, there are a few benefits of co-sleeping with your pets, which are, by and large, the same as living with pets in general.

Dr. Saema explains, 'Pets can be surprisingly good for your mental state at night. Just being near your dog or cat can boost oxytocin, the “bonding hormone," and lower stress hormones like cortisol, which can help you relax,' particularly when paired with a calming activity, like journaling or meditation, and a warm, soothing, dimmable lamp, available at Amazon.

For that reason, having a pet in your bedroom may, in some cases, help you to fall asleep faster.

'Some people even feel like having a pet in bed gives them extra security or comfort, and it can help stick to a bedtime routine since pets tend to be creatures of habit,' continues Dr. Saema.

Steps You Can Take to Ensure a Better, More Hygienic Night's Sleep With Pets

If you can't part with your pets, there are some steps you can take to improve your sleep hygiene and prevent them from ruining your rest.

'Give them their own spot on the bed, either a pet bed or blanket, to contain hair and dander and keep them clean with regular brushing and bathing,' recommends Dr. Saema. To undo this habit without too much strain on her cats, Punteha did a gradual shift to end the practice. She says, 'First, I put a dark throw over our pillows, and they stopped sleeping near my pillow during the day. Then I began shutting the bedroom door in the morning so their daytime naps in my sleep space ceased. From there it was simple to keep them out at night, and though they scratched at the door for a night or two, they quickly adapted.'

What Are Sleep Frequencies?

To find out more about sleep frequencies, I spoke to Chrissy Lawler, sleep expert, LMFT, and founder of The Peaceful Sleeper. As she explains, 'sleep frequencies' is a term that people use to describe audio sounds that support sleep, which can include steady sounds, tones, or rhythmic beats that people find calming.

'Sleep frequencies are kind of the new white noise,' she says. 'As wearables and sleep trackers become more mainstream, people are seeing their sleep data – and connecting it to how rested, recovered, and stressed they feel during the day. As a sleep therapist, I love this trend because it encourages a mass prioritization of sleep, and sleep truly is one of the most powerful levers we have for physical and mental health. It establishes the foundation of well-being.'

In general, this newer sleep hack is less about forcing sleep and more about creating an environment that helps you to fall asleep fast, by minimizing disruptions and helping the nervous system to settle and down-regulate.

'White noise was the first and easiest step, Chrissy adds. 'If we can drown out external sounds, we often sleep better. It’s a great way to neutralize the environment, mask noise that might disrupt us, and prevent those little sound spikes that can pull us out of deep, restorative sleep. And now that more people have that “buttoned up,” they’re looking for ways to optimize sleep even further – which is where sleep frequencies come in.'

Having a consistent sound to focus on can help you settle into a calmer, more meditative state. 'It works best as an add-on to healthy sleep hygiene,' Chrissy says, 'but sound won’t cancel out things like caffeine late in the day or blue light before bed.'

What Are the Key Types of Sleep Frequencies?

There's more than one type of sleep frequency, and there's no one-size-fits-all approach to what will work for one person or another. Some of the most common include binaural beats (two tones, one in each ear – usually headphones), pulsing or isochronic-style tones, and delta/theta sleep tracks.

In terms of which are the best for sleep, Kenny Timper, certified Sleep Science Coach with Sleepopolis, advises, 'Delta waves (0.5-4 Hertz) are linked to deep, restorative sleep. Theta waves (4-8 Hz) are associated with light sleep and deep relaxation. Alpha waves (8-12 Hz) promote calm wakefulness, which can be helpful during your pre-sleep routine.

'The science-y answer is that theta frequencies are often recommended for falling asleep because they mirror the brain’s early sleep stages. That said, the best thing you can do is find sounds that work for you and try not to overthink falling asleep.

'The best sleep can find you on the couch while a random action movie plays in the background on TV – you fell asleep because you didn't overthink it, and the drone from the TV probably helped!'

Chrissy agrees that sometimes the most surprising sounds can be the most soothing.

'For example, when we had newborns in our room, we used a heartbeat sound on a sound machine (such as the Hatch Baby Sound Machine, available at Amazon), and it was surprisingly calming for the adults too,' she says.

How to Use Sleep Frequencies to Enhance Your Sleep

The easiest, simplest way to use sleep frequencies is just to try a few to see which works best for you.

'You can find sleep frequency tracks on apps like Calm, Headspace, Insight Timer, and Brain.fm, as well as streaming platforms,' explains Kenny. 'Some apps and sounds require headphones to work effectively. You can also purchase sound machines that offer frequency-based soundscapes specifically for sleep,' such as the Magicteam Machine, available at Amazon, or use playlists. For example, the Deep Sleep Frequencies playlist, available on Spotify, is a good place to start.

You can also, as Dr. Lincoln Stoller, principal at Mind Strength Balance, recommends, use brainwave training devices, such as the MUSE 2: The Brain Sensing Headband, available at Amazon, but, 'subjectively, it's easier to use musical rhythms to appreciate how these frequencies stimulate or sedate you,' he adds.

The main things to keep in mind are to find something that resonates with you and makes your brain feel calm, and experiment with different sound types until you find your best fit.
