I live near the coast, so every time it rains my windows get coated in a 'lovely' layer of hard water and sandy spots.

While my downstairs windows have always been easy enough to clean using a window vac, my upstairs windows have always been out of my reach. Especially as I have a chronic illness that means climbing a ladder is not a smart idea.

After months of debating with myself, I finally decided to try a magnetic window cleaning tool as a last hope before employing someone to clean them for me. I was so impressed that it has now saved me hundreds on window cleaning bills.

Why I swear by this magnetic window cleaning tool

I usually clean my windows with The Pink Stuff, however, there was no way for me to reach my three upstairs windows to do this safely, so the grime has been left to build up for at least the last two years I have lived here.

I have always cleaned the inside of the windows using a window vacuum such as a Karcher electric window vacuum, available at Amazon, and the best homemade window cleaner which is a mix of warm water and Castile soap, but it was finally time to give the outsides a good chance too, with the hopes it might increase natural light in my dark home.

Setting up

Setting up the magnetic window cleaner was simple. It was ready right out of the box, which I liked. The only thing I had to do was soak the triangular pads in some warm water before applying a detergent.

There was no cleaning solution provided, so I stuck with my tried and true DIY cleaning solution of Castile soap. I use Dr. Bronner's Almond scented soap, from Amazon, as I love the marzipan (almond) scent it gives off as I clean. I didn't measure this, instead opting to keep things simple and popping a good squeeze on.

I also only soaked the external pad, as the inside of the windows was already clean.

Cleaning the window

Time for the moment of truth. Sticking the device to the window was a little bit fiddly, especially as my windows are quite thickly double-glazed. Luckily, there is a wrist strap that connects to the outer pad so you can grab it if it falls.

The magnets are very strong, but through the window, it felt a little bit loose. Nevertheless, I gave it a go.

My first mistake was trying to move the device up the window vertically. It instantly fell off, and I was thankful for the strap so the outer part wasn't lost on my extension roof forever. Going back to the instructions, I put it back on and moved it horizontally along the window instead, and very slowly.

As far as cleaning tips go, it is not a quick hack. You do have to take your time and move the device precisely to get results. However, when I pitch this against the process of using ladders and balancing tools outside in cold weather (as you should never clean windows in hot weather), it seems an easy trade-off. At least here I am standing next to my toasty radiator, watching body-doubling videos as I work.

Once I got the hang of it, the results were pretty instant. The tool has two parts a cleaning pad at the top of the triangle (where I applied the soap) and a squeegee-type line in the middle to clear water away as you move. All in all, I only needed two passes over my window to get it really clean.

I didn't clean the inside of the window at this point, but seeing the runoff outside, I would advise against using soap and water for the internal pane. If I were to use this method to clean inside windows, I would spray on a glass and window cleaner, such as Method Mint Glass & Surface Cleaner from Walmart first, rather than soaking the second pad to avoid soaking my window ledge and carpets with soapy water.

My verdict

This simple tool is certainly practical for cleaning a window without going outside, and it is a lot cheaper than paying for a window cleaner to come around bi-weekly.

For a relatively cheap and cheerful tool, it certainly cleans the window well, removing the watermarks and dust to leave shining glass behind. However, I have not yet mastered the art of cleaning a window without streaks with it yet. A part of me wonders if this will come down to practicing the technique and learning to trust that it won't fall. There are still some slight marks around the edges of the panes where I rotated the tool to change directions or small areas I missed.

All in all, however, to say I don't have to climb ladders or go outside in cold weather, this cheap magnetic cleaning tool from Amazon has been a game changer. My upstairs rooms even feel a bit brighter for it.

With those dealt with, it is also a good idea to give the unit a wipe down too to remove dust and grime build-up, Ken adds. You might also want to consider scheduling a service, too. 

2. Clean behind appliances

Make sure to also clean the frames and any handles or latches. When you have done this to every window then move on to the next tool and clean window tracks, using either a fresh cloth or duster (sometimes even a vacuum cleaner nozzle) to remove dust and grease from the tracks to ensure your windows close and open smoothly in spring and summer and to keep the seals in good condition.’

1. Makeover your front door

If you know anything about the meaning of Feng Shui, you will be aware that your front door and harnessing entryway Feng Shui is essential for welcoming positive energy into your home. Therefore, you should always start here, says Amanda Gibby Peters, Feng Shui expert and owner of Simple Shui.

‘A little quick shui explanation first – the architecturally intended front door is referred to as the “mouth of chi”. This is where all energy, such as opportunities, possibilities, and luck, enters our homes and lives,’ Amanda explains. ‘So, anytime we want to give the energy in our lives an upgrade, this is such a brilliant starting spot – as this is your point of influence for what “enters” your life.'

Start by fixing your drafty door, using caulk or weatherstripping tape, or fix your door that sticks, before taking steps to make a front door look expensive. Then, turn your attention to organizing your entryway, removing any things making your entryway look cluttered.

‘If this space feels more like an obstacle course, say, the “everyday busyness” of your life piles up here, consider that it might be blocking opportunities from coming “into” your life,' continues Amanda. 'Evaluate the outside of your door as well as inside your front entry, and strive to make both welcoming.’

2. Take care of your houseplants

If you don't already have some Feng Shui house plants around your home, now is the time to add them, suggests Hannah Yang, Psy.D, licensed psychologist and Founder of Balanced Awakening.

If you already have plants, the start of spring is a time to focus on their upkeep, or get rid of any that didn't do so well over winter, she adds.

‘Make sure you get rid of dead leaves, as these promote negative energy – the opposite of what you want in spring, then fertilize as needed. It’s also a good time to rotate plants or move them around in your home. A bit of rearranging goes a long way to refresh the energy.’

Don't forget about your fake plants, either, says Suzanne Roynon, interiors therapist at Interiors Therapy, Feng Shui consultant, and author of Welcome Home: How stuff makes or breaks your relationship, available at Amazon.

'If you have fake flowers or foilage, they will attract dust and cobwebs,' she explains. 'Give them a thorough cleaning to freshen them up,' using a small duster, such as the OXO Good Grips Microfiber Delicate Duster available at Amazon.

'Although Feng Shui doesn't recommend fake plants, and they don't contain any positive energy, there are times and spaces when they are useful, so it pays to take good care of them,' adds Suzanne.

3. Clean windows and mirrors

As the days get longer each day throughout spring, it is the perfect time to increase natural light in your home to encourage positive energy and growth in your space. The simplest way to do this is to clean your windows, suggests Feng Shui expert Amanda.

She says, ‘In Feng Shui, windows represent the “eyes” of a home, symbolic of our ability to see things. They are also symbolic of the outside world and our ability to consider “outside perspectives.” So, when weather grime coats them, we aren’t “seeing” the whole picture or even what is right in front of us.’

Similarly, cleaning mirrors to remove dust and streaks can help the flow of light through your space. ‘Mirrors “double” everything they reflect, so keeping them streak-free is an excellent habit to pick up,’ Amanda says.

To do so, you can use glass cleaner, such as the Method Glass Cleaner + Surface Cleaner available at Amazon, or try making the best homemade window cleaner, by combining Castile soap (available at Walmart) and distilled water.

You can also use a dish soap solution for streak free windows, or invest in a magnetic window cleaning tool to practically do the work for you. The options are endless, so there's no excuses!

Then, once your windows are clean, remember to open them regularly throughout spring, says licensed psychologist Hannah.

‘Open windows whenever you have the opportunity,' she recommends. 'Even if it’s just for 10 minutes. This helps to get the winter air out and bring in the new spring air of opportunity. You can also cleanse a house with sage or similar if you feel inspired.’

Using the shock ventilation beloved in Germany, just five minutes of ventilation can also reduce the risk of mold growth inside.

4. Declutter

According to Feng Shui expert Suzanne, spring is the best time of year to declutter.

She advises, 'Always use the new, positive energy which comes with spring to undertake a massive declutter, one which really gets into all the closets, cupboards and crannies.

'Many people don't realize the detrimental impact of their clutter on their lifestyle, health, relationships, wealth and wellbeing,' but it's true – there are many benefits of a tidy home.

Suzanne continues, 'If you find clutter creeps back a couple of weeks after a big clear out, then sorry, but you aren't doing it effectively! Having recently learned the exact date you should start spring cleaning, I felt it was time to elevate my approach by applying some professional tips to my routine. After plenty of research – and consulting with expert cleaners – these are the strategies I recommend you try:  

1. Careful planning pays off

Without a doubt, the top piece of advice I received from professional cleaners on where to start spring cleaning was to plan my approach on paper before I picked up a single tool.

While it is certainly possible to spring clean your house in one day, that wasn't a task I was willing to try this year. Spring cleaning can often feel overwhelming and exhausting, but when it's broken down into simpler, smaller tasks, it can be far more manageable. So, I took heed of this sage advice and began by creating a list of all the tasks I wanted to achieve this year. Then, on my calendar, I decided which tasks I planned to combat each day.

When you give yourself the time to plan your actions, you can set yourself up for a successful decluttering session or deep clean. I found it much easier to know where to start spring cleaning when I blocked out specific times in my diary and made a conscious effort to commit to those hours.

2. Try setting SMART goals

This next strategy builds upon the first technique, so if you found that helpful, you may want to try this as well.

'View spring cleaning as a goal-setting opportunity,' urge Kristi Lord and Lindsay Droz, Co-Founders of L'AVANT Collective. 'Utilize the SMART process of making the cleaning Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.'

Now, the idea of setting SMART goals in my personal life – alongside my working hours – didn't exactly fill me with joy. However, I have to admit, it works. For example, a SMART goal for your spring cleaning might be: 

'By the end of the week, I will have decluttered and deep-cleaned the kitchen, including purging expired goods from the pantry, cleaning the refrigerator, and organizing the cabinets, dedicating 1 hour each afternoon to achieve this.'

Try setting SMART goals for several spring cleaning tasks prior to starting a session and notice how much easier these chores become. 

3. Begin with the busiest room of the house

With planning complete and measurable goals set, the next thing to consider is which room to start your annual spring clean in. When I asked professional cleaners to weigh in on this question, they were torn between the kitchen and the bedroom, but my favorite piece of advice was to begin in the busiest room of your home.

For me, the busiest room has to be the kitchen, and Maria Mooney, a cleaning expert at Truly Free, agrees: 'This space often needs the most attention since it's used by everyone in the household multiple times a day.'

I've learned a few closet decluttering tips over the years and I like to tackle this space at the start of my spring cleaning because it not only helps to clear out items I no longer wear but it also helps me to organize my clothing in a way that makes daily selections easier. 

If you haven't worn something in the past year, consider donating it. This approach simplifies your wardrobe, making it quicker to get dressed in the morning and ensuring your closet space is optimized.

5. Tackle high-traffic floors

When considering where to start your spring cleaning, don't overlook the ground beneath your feet. High-traffic flooring areas – such as entryways, hallways, and living room floors – often bear the brunt of daily life, collecting dirt, dust, and debris more than any other surfaces in your home. 

I like to start my spring cleaning sessions by giving my hallway floor a thorough vacuum, followed by any carpets and area rugs, paying special attention to edges and under furniture, where dust and dirt accumulate. 

For hardwood, laminate, or tile floors, I find that a good sweeping followed by mopping with an appropriate cleaner restores their shine and cleanliness, instantly refreshing the overall look of my home.

Starting your annual deep clean by following these key five techniques should help you spring clean without getting overwhelmed. Remember, the goal of cleaning is not to feel pressured to scrub and polish every inch of your home but to refresh and rejuvenate your living spaces. So, tailor these tips to your needs and find what works best for you.

Ask for help, get small children out of the way, put on a motivational playlist and note these ultra-efficient cleaning tips from the pros. And if you do run out of time, remember that a three-day spring cleaning blitz is also a great option. Cleaning supplies at the ready.

1. Make a Plan

To clean quickly, you need to make a plan so that when one task is done, you can move straight on to the next. Make your own spring cleaning checklist, starting with the most heavily used areas, such as the kitchen and bathroom, as they will likely be the most labor-intensive. If there's a cleaning task you secretly quite enjoy, leave that til the end when you'll be ready to stop.

'Decide on the rooms you are planning to clean and then break it down into sections,' suggests Chris Willatt, the owner of Denver house cleaning service Alpine Maids. One time-saver is to start by doing laundry, running the dishwasher, and spraying down all bathroom surfaces before moving on to other tasks, so that things are being cleaned in the background while you crack on with the dusting and taking out the trash.

It's also a good idea to plan out the whole day, so think about what you want to have cleaned by lunchtime, and commit to a goal for the afternoon. Stock up on snacks, aim to get outside for some fresh air at lunch, and plan a reward for the evening.

2. Set a Timer

Set a timer for an hour and 'employ yourself' to clean (a cash incentive always spurs us on), or simply break down cleaning into 25-minute bursts with plenty of breaks to rest and rehydrate. 'We recommend cleaning in parts, with a timer. The most effective way to clean is in 25-minute blocks, so we always advise our cleaners to set a Pomodoro timer,' says Delah Gomasi, CEO at MaidForYou.

'Work for 25 minutes then rest for 5 minutes, then get back to cleaning once the 5 minutes is up.' A timer keeps us focused as we know a break is coming and helps us spring clean without becoming overwhelmed.

3. Make Piles of Clutter

Clear your surfaces as much as possible so you can focus on cleaning – piles of clutter can be dealt with at a later date. Spring cleaning is not a time for tidying or decluttering, we're just removing dirt, dust, and debris and sanitizing our spaces here. For instance, when spring cleaning the bedroom, you could strip the bed, and put any stray items onto the bed before dusting and cleaning mirrors, surfaces, and floors.

'Clear the visual noise; remove knick knacks, benchtop equipment, and floor mess and put them in a convenient space away from your work area, agrees Jason James, the owner of organic cleaning company Dusptan & Brush. 'This is the most important first step, the idea is to create a canvas in which cleaning can be more easily visualized and performed.'

As part of my own spring cleaning this year, I spent around an hour deep cleaning my floors. I moved everything up and out of the way first, piling things on my bed, couch, and desk so the flooring was clear. With floors prepped, running my vacuum cleaner over the floors and baseboards was much easier. I moved furniture away from the walls too, to reach those hidden corners.

4. Work from Top to Bottom

It's obvious, but so easy to forget when cleaning quickly: let gravity do some of the hard work for you by working top-down (and go from left to right, or right to left to avoid cleaning areas twice by accident).

Interior designer and professional organizer Nicole Cullum's top-down approach includes starting up high by dusting ceiling fans and window shades. 'I like to wait to vacuum and mop the floors until all of my surfaces are done. This way no stray crumbs are falling onto my clean floors because I know my countertops and higher level areas have been wiped and dusted so my floors will be spotless,' Nicole says.

Nicole recommends moving from dry to wet cleaning, too, so wipe down any mirrors, countertops, and furniture surfaces before scrubbing the tub, shower, sinks, and toilets. Don't forget high-touch zones, like door handles, light switches, and appliances.

5. Focus on the Areas You Usually Avoid

Spring cleaning is all about tackling the cleaning tasks that generally go ignored during our normal routines because they feel more daunting. Choose a couple from this list depending on which most needs doing:

• Clean the windows inside and out to let the spring sunshine stream in now the days are longer
• Clean upholstery and soft furnishings around the home, targeting drapes and throw pillows
• Clean the couch, because it probably needs doing
• Clean the oven ready for Easter entertaining
• Clean mattresses to extend their lifespan
• Clean the washing machine to keep it functioning smoothly

6. Finish With the Details

Pay attention to the details for a sparkling clean finish. 'Look over all rooms with a handful of microfibers and a spray bottle with a 1:5 vinegar-to-water ratio. Look at places that need to shine, such as faucets, shower glass, taps, stovetop, oven door,' says cleaning expert Jason James. 

'Give them a good spray and polish and before long, you'll have finished your masterpiece.'

With our laundry, we can’t wait until it's built up, and we only have one pair of socks and one pair of underwear left. We've got to stay on top of it,' Ronald emphasizes.

How to clean dust from a PC without compressed air

Even if you’re not using compressed air, all of our experts warned that the first step should always be to power down your device.

'Always turn off (and possibly unplug) your laptops and computers when cleaning,” says Marcia Sloman of Under Control Organizing. This is to avoid causing any accidental damage during the process.

Option 1: Manually remove the dust

If you’re removing dust from your keyboard without compressed air, Sloman says there’s one very simple alternative. 'Begin by turning your keyboard upside down to remove any loose debris,' she suggests.

Whether you're expecting a load of crumbs to fall out or not, we suggest doing this one over a nearby trash can or, at the very least, a dust rag to collect the debris and keep it from dirtying up the rest of your workspace. 

Option 2: Use dry brushes

As another alternative to compressed air, Sloman says a dry brush is perfect for removing dust from your keyboard or any other hard-to-reach places on your PC, computer, or laptop. 

'A new makeup brush, toothbrush, or unused small paintbrush can be used to loosen any particles,' says Sloman. 

Option 3: Wipe down with a lint-free cloth

Now that you’ve removed as much internal dust, dirt, and debris as possible, Sloman suggests wiping the whole machine down with a lint-free cloth, available at Amazon.

'Use a lint-free cloth to remove surface dust and dirt,' she says. 'If you have to disinfect the keyboard, use a small amount of alcohol or peroxide on a lint-free cloth as it dries quickly.'

Remember, too much cleaning solution can permanently damage your computer, so definitely take the words 'small amount' seriously when cleaning laptop screens and cleaning monitors.

Option 4: Use an electric air duster

Jill Koch of Jill Comes Clean is all about using an electric air duster, at Amazon as an ideal alternative to canned compressed air. 

'You can use compressed air but I actually prefer an electric air duster,' Koch tells us. 'They often come with attachments to help brush crumbs and dirt out of the keys and they are rechargeable so you can use them over and over again.' An investment, but a great desk organizing tip for a clean and productive setup.

Whatever you do, avoid hair dryers

If you’re using a dedicated device like an electric air duster, that’s one thing. But Sloman says you should avoid repurposing other appliances to clean your computer.

'Avoid using hair dryers or vacuums to clean dust from a PC because they can cause static which could zap your computer parts,' she says. 'An alternative to compressed air is a mini-keyboard vacuum, at Amazon.'

Contrary to its name, spring cleaning doesn't have to last for the whole season. In fact, stretching out the cleaning for so long can quickly lead to burnout and an incomplete to-do list. What's more, it is a bad way to spend your whole spring. 

To avoid running out of steam and failing to complete my spring cleaning checklist this year, I decided to give my mom’s three-day spring cleaning blitz a go myself. This cleaning tip helps to preserve energy for the rest of the month and ensures the tasks you pick are done with close attention to detail – rather than trying to achieve more without truly tackling the areas that need cleaning the most.

Here is how I got on over the three days, and how you can replicate something similar yourself. 

The three-day spring cleaning blitz 

Through experience and talking to experts, I have learned that the best tip for successful spring cleaning is to keep it simple. Stripping the cleaning routine down to the basics and setting clear goals is essential to avoiding spring cleaning overwhelm.

My mom always loved quick cleaning tricks like fake cleaning, so I knew her three-day spring cleaning blitz would be the answer to this otherwise laborious task. The trick is to use each day to work on a different level of each room. 

Day one is centered on cleaning things at the top of your rooms like your ceilings and lights. On day two, it's everything at the mid-level such as furniture and counters, and day three focuses on your floors. This way, any dirt you knock off top levels will settle on the layer below and be cleaned up the next day, not dirtying anything you have already spent time on.

Day 1 – Centred on ceilings

Day one of my spring cleaning blitzes was all about completing some of the tasks higher up in my spaces and prepping for the bigger tasks ahead of me. My first job was to spot-treat any stains on the rugs and carpets in preparation for cleaning them later in the routine. My favorite product to rely on for this is Dr. Beckmann’s Carpet Stain Remover, available at Amazon, which comes with a brush head attachment to make dispersing the product and scrubbing super simple – especially for my cream living room area rug. 

Next, I moved on to the true task at hand for day one – cleaning anything up high. I started by using the long stick attachment on my cordless vacuum cleaner to suck up any cobwebs that had formed across the ceilings around my entire home. Living in a period property there were way more than I care to admit after the long winter. While working on the ceiling, I also used a long-handled duster, a little like this duster from Walmart, to gently wipe any dust from my ceiling light fixtures too. 

Then, I moved on to cleaning and dusting any high-up shelves and tops of cabinets around my home. I made my way around the house from dusting easy spots such as the shelves in my living room, to cleaning kitchen grease from the top of my floating kitchen cabinets and the top of my range hood. When doing this, I made sure to use a sturdy stepladder to prevent clambering across countertops and risking a fall. 

Once clean, I laid out some sections of old newspaper on top of the cabinets (a hack I saw on TikTok) to help collect grease and dust that settles in the future. That way I can pull the old paper off and replace it instead of having to scrub with a cloth and spray again.

These tasks, although they sound like hard work, don't take me very long to do at all, so I used this day to clean the windows, too. For the outsides of my windows, I use the ‘Pink & Blink’ method, using The Pink Stuff to help break down old water marks from months of rain. 

Finally, I dusted the tops of any picture frames around my home and cleaned my mirrors properly as opposed to giving them a quick wipe for a super shiny surface.

Day 2 – Anything in easy reach

Day two was all about working at the mid-level of my rooms – which means anywhere that I can easily reach without a step ladder or stool. To start the day, I stripped my bedding and used baking soda to deodorize and clean my mattress. I sprinkled an even layer of baking soda over the surface and allowed it to sit while I got on with the rest of my daily tasks (I came back to vacuum it up later in the day).

Next, I tackled the other easy jobs on my list and went around my house collecting any machine-washable throw blankets that were heavily used and throw pillow covers to throw in the washing machine, setting up a laundry load to run as I vacuumed upholstery to pick up any dust that had settled from the day before and crumbs from under the seat pads. I didn't have any stains on my furniture, but you could use this time to deep clean upholstery if needed too.

Although a task I do regularly, I also wiped down and disinfected any surfaces at mid-level too, such as dusting my coffee and side tables and degreasing my kitchen counters after the previous day's dusting. This also forced me to declutter countertops and surfaces too – moving items back to their designated ‘homes’ and throwing out trash.

The final big task for day two was to declutter my closet. I knew this would be the task that took me the longest so I tried to set aside a good chunk of the afternoon to get it done and challenge myself to complete the ‘scary hour’ productivity tip to help force myself to declutter this overwhelming space as I transitioned my wardrobe to spring/summer.  

Day 3 – Focusing on flooring

The final day was dedicated to everything on the floor from vacuuming to deep cleaning carpets and cleaning area rugs. By day three, any dust and dirt from higher up will have settled down on the lower level, making it the perfect finishing task. 

Having pre-treated stains on day one, I cleaned my baseboards (a task I often totally forget about) and vacuumed the floors to pick up any loose debris, moving quickly forward with the vacuum cleaner and slowly backward to pick up every last crumb. 

Next, I used my mom’s carpet shampooer to deep clean any carpeted areas in my home. It helps to do this task as it warms up in spring to allow the carpets to dry with the doors and windows open for warm airflow. I also used my dehumidifier in rooms that didn’t have as good ventilation.

The final task for my spring cleaning routine was to pour some baking soda and vinegar down my drains to deodorize after pouring any dirty carpet-cleaning water away and popped two cups of white vinegar in the detergent drawer of my washing machine to help deodorize and clean the washing machine after two days of constant laundry cycles.

My verdict

This three-day spring cleaning blitz may sound intensive, but spending a long weekend getting everything done from top to bottom will free up more time over the rest of the month than trying to remember to clean one thing every day for 30 days. 

I find that spreading out the tasks in order of height in the room cleverly works a common cleaning tip into your spring cleaning routine without having to think too hard about the order of cleaning or accidentally cleaning a lower surface before realizing you need to dust something above.

Overall, this three-day spring cleaning blitz is the best spring cleaning hack I have used – and it is all thanks to my mom.

Starting off with all of your spring cleaning supplies to hand means starting off on the right foot. Organizing your cleaning supplies is also important to help you find things more efficiently, removing barriers in the way of your cleaning in the first place.

To help build up the energy to clean, Dr. Judy Gavazza, licensed and board-certified clinical and forensic psychologist recommends, 'Do some type of movement in the morning to get your blood flowing and your muscles limber. This can be a few yoga poses, some nice relaxing stretches, or a heart-pumping workout.'

Once you are moving and feel warm, you might find it is a lot easier to press on and complete your chores.

8. Leave laundry running

Doing laundry is not a spring-specific task, but it pays to set up a cycle at the start of the day and leave it running as you work on other spring cleaning chores – especially when tackling bulkier items you don't wash often, such as washing a comforter.

Laundry expert and CEO of Laundryheap, Deyan Dimitrov says, 'Ideally you should wash your bulkier bedding once at the end of summer and once at the end of winter so now is a great time! If pillows go unwashed, you might wake up with itchy eyes, congestion and sneezing due to the build-up of bacteria and allergens.

9. Work from top to bottom

Head of Solved Punteha shares, 'One thing I wish I knew about tidying and cleaning when I was younger was to work from top to bottom. When cleaning and dusting, starting at the top of a room with the highest shelves and cabinets means any dust dislodged does not fall onto clean surfaces that you then have to clean again. It is one home cleaning mistake I ensure I no longer make.

'Not only does this save time, but energy and cleaning supplies, too. Finishing with the floor also means I can wipe crumbs from counters onto the floor to vacuum up later without any guilt.'

Paulo Filho explains, 'Spring cleaning can be physically and emotionally draining. Taking a break is about recharging physically and mentally, so spending it making more cleaning lists and plans, or moving things for the next task is not sufficient.

They certainly shouldn't be missed!

1. Tops of kitchen cabinets

Many of us will likely have cleaning kitchen cabinets on our to-do lists, but the tops of high cabinets are often left behind. These spots can be harboring odor-emitting grease and allergy-causing dust, however, making it essential to give them a thorough clean. 

‘A simple mixture of warm water and vinegar or a grease-cutting cleaner, along with a microfiber cloth, can be used to clean these areas,’ recommends Karina Toner, cleaning expert at Spekless Cleaning. She adds that it's essential to use a step ladder to reach these spots safely to avoid clambering onto kitchen counters and risking falling or slipping when working at a height. 

While you are up there, you may wish to lay down some old newspaper to make future cleaning more simple. This newspaper will catch the dust and grease and can be easily lifted away and replaced to save scrubbing next time. 

2. Window tracks

Cleaning a window without streaks is a great spring cleaning task for the aesthetics of our home, but the commonly forgotten window tracks could be harboring damaging mold or even dead insects, warns Ahmad Jamal, professional cleaner at Cleaners Advisor. Luckily, cleaning them out is simple. 

Once you have opened the window as wide as possible, start by vacuuming or wiping away any loose debris. An old toothbrush or a small cleaning brush is then ideal for fitting into the small gaps to scrub away any remaining dirt, Ahmad explains.

'You can also use a mixture of warm water and vinegar to help loosen any stubborn dirt, or even a mold spray if you need to get rid of black mold from the tracks and window seals.’  

3. Humidifiers

Humidifiers are excellent for controlling the air quality in our homes. However, even when paired with the best air purifier, these handy devices collect a lot of dust, dirt, and bacteria that you could be pumping back into your home, points out Lana Tkachenko, cleaning expert at Force of Nature. 

An easy way to clean a humidifier is to empty it out after each use and spray in any household disinfectant such as Force of Nature, available at Amazon, Lana recommends. 

After letting it sit for a few minutes to kill germs, wipe it away and leave it to dry naturally. ‘You can then fill it up with fresh water without rinsing,' she adds.

4. Stove range hoods

Cleaning a range hood is time-consuming, and many of us want to forget that it exists. Nevertheless, this commonly missed spot is essential to clean. 

Due to their constant exposure to kitchen grease and food particles, these appliances can quickly stop working unless they are cleaned effectively, says Paulo Filho, cleaning expert and founder of Celestial Cleaning Service. 

‘To clean, start by removing the filter and soaking it in warm soapy water,’ he suggests. ‘Then, use a degreaser or a mixture of baking soda and vinegar to clean the hood and wipe it down with a clean cloth before reassembling.’ 

5. Baseboards

Another spot that is often disregarded is the baseboards, says Karina Toner, cleaning expert. ‘These areas can accumulate dust, pet hair, and dirt quickly, especially in high-traffic areas.’

How you clean baseboards will vary depending on whether they are dusty, greasy, painted, or natural wood or tile. However, one great multi-purpose approach is to vacuum up loose debris and dust before using a basic and gentle mix of warm water and mild dish soap on a microfiber cloth and drying with a clean towel afterward. 

Alternatively, try cleaning baseboards with dryer sheets to easily collect dust and prevent it from settling for longer after wiping. 

6. Drains

You shouldn't just be cleaning your kitchen sink drains once they begin to drain slowly or emit a foul odor. In fact, regular cleaning will help to prevent blocked drains altogether, saving you a lot of time (and often money) in the long run – this goes for cleaning a garbage disposal too. 

A simple way to clean your drains, both for sinks and showers, is to mix baking soda and lemon juice or vinegar together before pouring it down the drain hole, suggests Jake Romano, plumbing expert at John The Plumber. The lemon juice is a great deodorizer too if you are struggling with banishing bad kitchen smells.

The mixture will fizzle for some time, Hake explains, but you can flush it with hot water after about half an hour. This is a great way to prevent slow drains or blocked drains, and it makes your kitchen smell lemony-fresh.

7. Behind home appliances

When our furniture has been in a fixed position for so long, it is easy to forget that things manage to fall behind them. In fact, behind the refrigerator and washing machine are some of the dirtiest hidden areas of a kitchen we forget to clean – they can even attract pests. 

It is best to move these appliances out from time to time, especially during spring cleaning, to sweep or vacuum the floors and wipe down baseboards and walls, recommends Ahmad Jamal, professional cleaner.

8. Curtains

Our home's curtains may seem harmless, but they collect a surprising amount of allergy-causing dust and debris. Spring and summer are perfect times to clean your curtains as we do not need them for insulation, and nice outdoor weather offers a great opportunity to hang them to dry or air out. 

Angela Boswell, founder of The Drape, a custom window treatment company suggests two methods of getting the most out of your window hangings. 

Firstly, while they are hanging up, you can either vacuum them if you have a small attachment for your vacuum cleaner or use a handheld steamer to essentially ‘give your curtains a hot bath and iron them all at one time.’

Alternatively, if you have space (and clean outside air) you can take your curtains down and hang them outside for a few hours. ‘When the curtains are off the rod, take this opportunity with a damp rag to wipe down the rod and maybe even the wall,’ she adds. ‘Dust is sneaky!’

Before throwing your curtains in the washing machine, it is best to check the care label first, as many fabrics are either too heavy or too delicate to be washed with water. Many curtains are dry clean only, making steaming and airing the easiest and safest bet.

9. Light fixtures

Whether on your ceiling, walls, tables, or floor, lights and lamps draw dust to them whenever the bulb is turned on and hot, not to mention the amount of dust that settles naturally. As a result, they are some of the dustiest and grimiest spots in your home according to professional cleaner Ahmad Jamal. 

To clean them, you should start by turning off the power to the fixture, he advises. Then, ‘remove any bulbs and shades and wipe them down with a damp cloth or sponge’. 

For the fixture itself, use a microfiber cloth or a soft-bristled brush to gently remove any dust or dirt. Alternatively, you can use a sticky lint roller, such as these on Amazon, to collect dust in one fell swoop without it falling to areas below. 

10. Home electronics

In the modern world, we use electronics almost every hour of every day, but we never stop to think about how dirty they must become. Things like mice and keyboards, remote controls, phones, and smart switches are hotspots for bacteria – and easily spread germs from one place to another. 

The best way to clean these areas, cleaning expert Karina Toner says, is to keep a small microfiber cloth with some disinfectant to hand. Spray the spray onto the cloth as opposed to directly onto the electronics to prevent water damage, and wipe down, allowing the disinfectant to dry naturally to kill any bacteria lingering.

As we leave gray winter skies behind and say hello to spring sunshine, many of us will have started to notice just how dirty the outside of our home's windows are. 

With the first spell of decent sunshine over the weekend, I tried a new hack for cleaning windows, and it was super fast and worked. I used The Pink Stuff to do it, which is why I call it 'Pink & Blink'. Spread the word.

The good news? It has only four steps and took less than an hour to get all my windows sparkling. 

'Pink & Blink' window cleaning hack

This window cleaning hack is perfect for freshening up windows and keeping them clear for longer, meaning I don't have to spend time and energy recleaning the panes halfway through a hot summer. 

Here is how to get the same results at home.

1. Clean the windows with The Pink Stuff

There is a multitude of window cleaning hacks on the internet, from using baking soda to clean windows, to using plain water and dish soap. 

My favorite, however, is cleaning with The Pink Stuff. This miracle cleaning paste worked wonders for cleaning my glass shower doors and removing hard water stains, so I had to give it a go on my windows. 

To apply the paste, I used a soft sponge, like these from Walmart, working in small circular motions from top to bottom. The paste is a light abrasive, helping to scrub away layers of dust and dirt without scratching the glass. 

What’s more, the paste contains sodium silicate, an ingredient ideal for breaking down grease and preventing hard water stains from forming on surfaces by breaking down calcium and magnesium deposits. For this reason, I also love it for cleaning stainless steel sinks.  

2. Rinse the glass with cold water

Once the window pane was covered, I rinsed the solution away with plain cold water. I used a watering can but you could use a low-pressure hosepipe if you have a connector in your yard. 

For any areas where the paste stuck, I used a clean, damp, soft microfiber cloth to wipe it away. I like these microfiber cloths from Walmart. They're pretty much guaranteed to give you a streak-free shine.

3. Remove excess water

While the traditional method of cleaning windows uses a standard squeegee to help remove water from the glass, I opt for a window vac to collect excess water and prevent streaking. My mom swears by using a window vac to beat condensation on the inside of windows and after borrowing hers for a week I had to buy my own.

A Karcher window vac, available at Amazon, is more efficient than a traditional squeegee, making cleaning windows quicker by sucking up water from window cleaning before it can dry in the sun and leave streaks. It also helps to reduce mess.

If, however, you want a less expensive approach, I love this Professional Window Cleaning Squeegee and Microfiber Scrubber, from Walmart.

I then buffed small water lines from the corners of the windows with a clean, dry, soft microfiber to the perfect result.

4. Use an old dish sponge to clean window seals

Window cleaning doesn't stop with the glass. Window tracks gather dirt and grime (and sometimes even mold!) throughout the year. This black grime can be difficult to access with a regular cleaning cloth and your fingers, so I use an old cut-up dish sponge to help reach into every nook and cranny, having discovered the tip on TikTok (see above).

These dish sponges from Walmart work well for this trick.

I start by cutting two horizontal slits along the top of the cleaning sponge with a craft knife. These sections then fit nicely into the tracks to wipe out dust and dirt with the help of some multi-purpose spray.

'Cleaning can be good for your body and mind, but spending all day doing grueling deep cleaning is not ideal. The key to managing spring cleaning is doing things that make cleaning manageable while still giving you a sense of accomplishment and a clear mind that comes with a tidy space,’ he explains.

1. Make a detailed plan

Making a cleaning plan is not just good for spring cleaning, but for a range of household tasks like decluttering when feeling overwhelmed, for example. Spring cleaning can be particularly stressful as it involves tackling areas of the home that require more time and energy than regular household chores, explains Alvin Pullins, cleaning specialist and founder of the home maintenance blog, Nerd In The House. This is where making a plan comes in handy.

‘Making a list of the areas that need to be cleaned helps you to visualize your tasks, your goals, and prioritize things based on urgency and importance,’ he says. Keeping them in a central location like the laundry room or garage will also help you when you tackle your list from one day to the next.’

'What areas of your home do you walk by and constantly see items you need to put away? What rooms take the longest to clean? It would be a good time to declutter those areas before spring cleaning,’ she says.

1. Start by making a cleaning checklist

Tempting as it is to pull out your vacuum cleaner and cleaning products and get started right away, experts recommend making a list first. Spring cleaning is a mighty task for anyone to take on each year and making a comprehensive checklist means nothing is missed out, and it helps prioritize tasks.

‘Start by making a list of all the areas you want to clean. This can include rooms, closets, drawers, and any other spaces that need attention. Having a list will help you stay organized and focused,’ explains Armeka Townsend, cleaning expert and senior consumer relations representative at Zep.

‘Break your cleaning tasks into smaller, manageable chunks and set a schedule for when you will tackle each task. This will help you stay focused and make the cleaning process more manageable.’

2. Stock up on supplies

‘To ensure that spring cleaning goes as smoothly as possible, one of the most important things to do is restock all of your necessary cleaning products,’ says Beatrice Flores, professional cleaner and founder of Living Pristine. ‘This will help save you time and energy while tackling the various tasks on your list.

'Good supplies are essential when it comes to scrubbing grime off those hard-to-reach surfaces and polishing away dust from furniture tops. Make sure all of these items are easily accessible, so there's no running back and forth between rooms trying to find what you need when you're in a hurry!’

If you are looking to be more sustainable at home this year, then stocking up on eco-friendly cleaning products could be a great place to start. ‘Look at what you’re using in your home. Many companies sell toxins in a new plastic bottle every time you purchase cleaning supplies. Switching to eco-friendly brands is a great way to start your non-toxic journey while reducing excessive plastic products that end up in our landfills and oceans,’ says Maria Mooney, Truly Free's cleaning expert.

It is not just your home that you need to consider when spring cleaning, but cleaning and decluttering a backyard too. ‘In the weeks leading up to spring cleaning, you'll want to gather the necessary cleaning supplies and equipment. Things like cleaning solutions, scrub brushes, a pressure washer, safety gear, trash bags, and ladders are all things you'll want on your list,’ suggests Ryan Farley, CEO of LawnStarter. ‘Having everything ready to go will save you time and hassle when it's time to start cleaning.’

3. Plan tasks around the weather

A lot of spring tasks require careful planning, and not just in your spring garden. Unpredictable weather can dictate when you can complete certain cleaning tasks, especially on the exterior of your home.

‘Spring weather can be unpredictable, so make sure you have supplies on hand for cleaning both inside and outside your home,’ advises Armeka Townsend, a cleaning expert. ‘For example, cleaning windows is best done on a dull, dry day so you can see streaks, warmer sunny days are ideal for cleaning and drying carpets, laundry, or upholstery, and rain days can be spent organizing indoors.'

4. Declutter your home

Although decluttering sounds like it should be a part of spring cleaning, decluttering your home in the run-up to spring cleaning means you can focus specifically on scrubbing your home rather than organizing. ‘Decluttering is key when preparing for spring cleaning; getting rid of items that no longer serve a purpose or bring joy will reduce the quantity of work that needs doing,’ Beatrice Flores, professional cleaner and founder of Living Pristine agrees.

‘Take some time in advance of your deep clean to go through all rooms of your home, sorting and donating unused items or throwing away anything broken beyond repair. This will not only give you more space to move around while you’re completing other tasks during your deep clean but also reduce stress levels, knowing that much of the hard work has already been done.’

One of the best ways to start decluttering is to pick up a decluttering method like the ‘five messes’ tidying technique or the ‘Ski-Slope’ organizing method to help tackle tough zones and declutter when you feel overwhelmed.

When trying to clear your home of clutter, it is wise to plan ahead and organize a pick-up for large items to make the process smoother, adds Charlie Victor, founder of My Modern Cave As you declutter. ‘Set aside items that are still in good condition but no longer needed after you have scheduled a donation pickup with a local charity to donate these items and help others in need.’

5. Tackle smaller tasks to prepare for the large deep cleans

Cleaning to prepare for cleaning sounds silly but when dealing with large areas, and deep cleaning areas you typically forget, breaking down the things to clean in February and tackling smaller zones, like regularly cleaning a bathroom, or cleaning a bedroom fast, can help to take the pressure off when you are sorting the rest of your home in late March and early April.

‘Start by dusting surfaces such as shelves, cabinets, and tables to help remove any accumulated dust that has settled over time before wiping down surfaces with a damp cloth, followed by cleaning products,’ Armeka Townsend, cleaning expert. recommends. ‘This will help remove any loose dirt or debris and make it easier for the cleaning product to work effectively.

‘You may also want to take the time now to remove any stains while you are not racing to get the rest of your home done,’ Armeka adds. ‘If there are any stains on surfaces or fabrics, pre-treat them with a stain remover before cleaning. This will help ensure that the stains are fully removed during the cleaning process.’

6. Get yourself in the right mindset to clean

Getting motivated to clean is one of the biggest steps in preparing to spring clean as without it, you are likely to burn out part way through. ‘Look for inspiration online or in magazines to get ideas for new cleaning techniques or tools,’ suggests DIY expert, Charlie Victor.

‘This can help you approach cleaning with a fresh perspective and keep you motivated throughout the process. Create a playlist of your favorite upbeat songs to listen to while cleaning to help you stay energized and motivated throughout the cleaning process, or plan to reward yourself after completing each cleaning task or goal. This can be as simple as treating yourself to a favorite snack or beverage or planning a fun activity once all the cleaning is done.’

'For every minute spent in organizing, an hour is earned,' said Benjamin Franklin – a quote I spotted back in late December when looking for inspiration for my New Year's resolutions. I took it to heart and resolved to be tidier in 2023. But...

Two weeks on and I'd already slipped back into bad habits, gathering clutter in all the usual places. So I searched the quote online again, and – surprise, surprise – the five-minute tidying challenge popped up on numerous professional organizers' websites. It was (possibly) the solution I'd been looking for to effectively tackle those 'doom piles', as clutter hotspots have been neatly coined. And I want everyone else to know about it too. Simply put: you set a timer and spend five minutes decluttering each day. Or, perhaps even more realistically, you carve the five minutes out of your daily routines – such as when you're waiting for the kettle to boil  – to purposefully tackle those doom piles before anything else.

You have doom piles that bother you, right? These rapid sessions (spurred on by taking 'before and after' photos) made a huge difference for me. If you're looking for cleaning tips that have a high effort-to-reward ratio, the five minute challenge is it. This is what I did.

5-minute tidying challenge

British cleaning influencer Lynsey Crombie, who I follow on social media, is a big fan of the five minute cleaning challenge. To kickstart my lapsed resolution to be tidier, I decided to take her lead and set a timer for five minutes in three different rooms each day, tackling those doom piles and getting them to look as neat and tidy as possible. 

I live alone in a small apartment, and regularly look at the kitchen countertop and wonder how I've managed to generate so much clutter there. Paperwork, pens, recipe ideas, bottles I can't find the lids for, it's all there. The same goes for the never-diminishing pile of laundered but odd socks on my bedroom chair, and the apartment-wide clutter that gathers in the living room.

Even though my apartment has plenty of clothes storage as well as lots of shelves high up for storing seasonal items out of the way, it's hard to stop the dining table from getting covered with random items of clothing, too. You can probably relate. 

Daily five-minute tidying sessions in each space reframed tidying in my mind, making it not just a 'race against the clock', but something that was really manageable. If you are wondering how to declutter when you feel overwhelmed, I can tell you that taking it five minutes at a time is incredibly doable.

And because it's only five minutes – and we all have five minutes no matter how busy we feel – I was happy to just get on with it. Whether on a working-from-home lunch break or in the evening before bed as a way to get things feeling less chaotic, five minutes of putting things away never felt like too much of a commitment.

Evenings when I was out, I just did one room when I got home, quickly cleaning the kitchen to avoid any apocalyptic levels of mess, or cleaning my bedroom so when it came to bedtime, it actually felt like a calm place to unwind with a book and camomile.

I think our relationships with our homes has changed for the better over the last few years in that they're no longer a place we simply arrive at after work, crashing through the door to slump in front of the sofa, sleep and start over again. We've realized how much a home we love being in can bolster our well-being, and even if you're mid-renovation or saving for new furniture, keeping it clean will always be the foundation for a happy home. It worked for me.

But even so, blink and the entryway's cluttered with shoes, coats and recycling I've been meaning to take out, and the bedroom is all piles of clothes and shoes. The five-minute tidying sessions prevented things from snowballing quite so much and made doom piles much more manageable. 

Coincidentally, I actually felt more inclined to keep going after the timer had finished, running my vacuum cleaner over the floors and creating a more nourishing environment with a vase of fresh tulips and freshly curated shelves. For such a simple idea, it makes a surprising difference, making tidying and taking care of our homes feel less daunting.

As with all habits, I'd recommend weaving this into your existing routine, inadvertently jumpstarting your spring cleaning by setting your timer after you've unloaded the dishwasher or just before you head to bed.

Whole house tasks

Some tasks need to be completed in every room. The one-tool cleaning method, where you move from room to room completing the same task in each until you reach the beginning again, can be a great way to make this a little quicker.

For example, vacuum every room with your best multi-surface vacuum cleaner, moving from space to space continuously, then dust every room, etc.

1. Dust shelves, frames, and mirrors

Give your shelves a thorough dust and use this as an opportunity to move things around and restyle with some cute spring decor ideas. Taking everything down and mixing up decor pieces, books and plants can make things feel new again. Dust any picture frames and mirrors at the same time, removing any cobwebs up high.

A smart habit to spend less time cleaning is to work from top to bottom. This way, any dust you knock down from up high does not fall on an already clean surface, reducing how long you have to spend re-doing tasks on your spring house cleaning checklist.

2. Clean baseboards

Sara San Angelo, a professional house cleaner of Confessions of a Cleaning Lady says, 'Cleaning baseboards are a must on any spring cleaning list. And that goes for all the baseboards and not just the ones you can see.' Move all of your furniture away from the wall and get every inch of your baseboards.

Sara swears by a Swiffer duster with extension pole, at Amazon, saying, 'They have a three-foot and six-foot version for high or hard-to-reach places. This really helps with baseboards as you don't have to do so much bending down.'

3. Dust lights and lamps

Sara continues, 'Clean lampshades, light fittings, and lightbulbs. Just a thin layer of dust on a light bulb dramatically reduces the amount of light the bulb provides.

'For light bulbs, a gentle wipe with a microfiber cloth works, but sometimes the dust is stuck on, especially if the bulbs are in the kitchen and they collect grease. Then you would want to take them out and gently wash them with dish soap, such as Dawn, from Target, and water. Be very careful to avoid breakages, and ensure they are completely dry before putting them back.'

For lampshades, consider using a lint roller, available at Walmart, to quickly pick up debris and refresh the fabric.

4. Target under furniture

We might be good at vacuuming under furniture, but have you ever looked at the underside of your pieces? They are some of the hidden dirty areas we forget to clean, which is why they're one of the things to clean in April that pros regularly stress the importance of.

Cleaning professional Sara points out that this is where lots of dust and cobwebs end up hiding, saying, 'It's also worth flipping chairs and coffee tables over and giving them an extra-thorough clean.'

It might seem over the top, but tackling the areas we usually neglect is the main reason why we spring clean.

5. Freshen up floors

Scott Johnston of Carpet Care of the Carolinas is an expert when it comes to how to clean area rugs, carpets, upholstery, and floors. He says the number one thing that should always be done as part of your spring cleaning is a deep cleaning of your textiles, including your carpet, rugs, furniture, and drapes.

He explains, 'Deep cleaning should always start with a thorough vacuuming of all of your textiles. This is the first step in removing dry particles, pollens, and other matters that have settled in over the winter.'

How you progress will depend on your floor type:

• To clean real wood floors: mop gently using a small amount of water and a dedicated wood floor cleaner, such as Method Wood Floor Cleanser, from Walmart. Then dry thoroughly.
• To deep clean carpets and rugs: use a specialized carpet cleaning machine to shampoo carpets and suck out moisture, or steam clean carpets to remove odors and kill bacteria. It is possible to clean carpets without a machine, but it is tiring work, requiring you to hand scrub each section with a DIY carpet cleaning solution.
• To clean tile floors: use a tile cleaner or a steam mop to mop floors. For grout, consider using a Rubbermaid power scrubbing brush, available at Target, and an abrasive cleanser such as The Pink Stuff, also from Target, to remove grime and staining.

6. Remove scuffs with a Magic Eraser

Scuff marks on walls and baseboards can quickly make a house look run down. While spring cleaning, take the time to clean walls using a duster, and then remove scuff marks from walls using Mr Clean Magic Erasers, available at Target.

Using light pressure, rub the scuffed area back and forth to lift the mark. Do not press too hard, as you might remove paint or damage wallpaper.

7. Wipe window tracks

Head of Solved, Punteha, says, 'Besides polishing the glass, you might not think about cleaning windows all that often. However, you should be cleaning window tracks regularly, especially during spring cleaning. Cleaning grease and grime from tracks means your windows will open and close more smoothly, and reducing wear and tear, prolonging their lifespan.'

To quickly tackle these things to clean in May, use a dish sponge, available in packs from Walmart, and a degreasing spray, such as the Method Heavy-Duty Degreaser, also from Walmart, to brush away dirt.

You can also take some time to lubricate the window hinges using a lubricant such as WD-40, from The Home Depot, to protect from damage during summer.

8. Disinfect high-touch points

Some quick target hygiene cleaning high-touch points can be a great way to reset your home after winter, fending off lingering winter germs. It's one of the tasks we recommend in our ultimate spring cleaning checklist.

Callum Couser, R&D operations manager for hygiene at Reckitt says, 'People often forget to disinfect high touch surfaces like light switches, TV remotes, and game controllers and even sanitize soft surfaces like your couch, cushions, backpacks. Use Lysol Disinfectant Spray, at Walmart, to disinfect and kill 99.9% viruses and bacteria, when used as directed. '

Don't forget to clean kitchen cabinets, and any handles, as well as the exterior of your fridge and freezer.

9. Refresh household filters

There are countless filters in your home that need refreshing come springtime, from cleaning a vacuum filter to cleaning water pitcher filters, and cleaning an air purifier.

Perhaps the most important filters are those in your HVAC system, however, warns Justin Cornforth, the CEO at Ace Home Co.

They say, 'One thing people always forget is filters. A filter in your air conditioner, filter in your air purifier, and even your vacuum cleaner’s filter make sure they are replaced or washed during the spring cleaning so they can do their job perfectly and maintain comfort in your home. If you have washable AC filters, remember that just rinsing them isn’t enough.

'Scrubbing your AC filter with soapy water and soaking it in a vinegar solution is a must if you want to get rid of stubborn dirt and mold spores.'

Kitchens

We should be cleaning kitchens weekly, and tackling counters, sinks, and stoves to prevent germs and grease build-up. So, to make the most of spring cleaning, focus on the areas you usually forget or neglect week to week in order to save time.

10. Clean the cutlery drawer

Forrest Webber, cleaning expert and owner of Bear Brothers Cleaning begins, 'Food gets in places you wouldn't believe, that old food turns moldy and could cause you to get sick! You need to be very thorough about your kitchen cleaning.'

That includes inside your cutlery drawer, where crumbs or lingering soap and food residue can end up festering.

Remove all your cutlery from the drawer and your cutlery organizer before vacuuming the drawer to remove debris. A disinfectant spray, such as the EWG-approved non-toxic Attitude Multi-Purpose Spray, from Walmart, can then be used in the drawer and divider to remove bacteria and sticky residue.

Finish by washing your cutlery, or at least polishing it with a cloth, before organizing kitchen drawers again.

11. Clean the pantry and fridge

Laura Price, professional home organizer and founder of The Home Organisation says, 'Reset your fridge and pantry by using up as many leftovers as you can, throwing away food that’s gone bad, cleaning shelves, and regrouping items into categories.'

Cleaning a pantry and cleaning a refrigerator follow the same steps. Start by removing all the food, then wipe down the shelves with either a disinfecting spray or a cloth dampened with warm soapy water. The best fridges usually have removable shelves to make this easier.

Dry the shelves before putting the food back in, with the oldest food at the front so it is used up more quickly, helping to reduce food waste.

Barbara Brock, professional home organizer and home stager adds, 'When organizing a pantry or fridge, check out dates on items and discard old or unused items. Toss out the cans which have expired dates, or anything that has been open for too long. Chips, crackers, and nuts became stale and tasteless the longer the box or package is opened, for example.'

12. Address under the sink

Few areas of the home attract chaos like the area under the kitchen sink.

If yours is full to the brim with products, edit, categorize, label, and organize cleaning supplies and you'll quickly be able to use this storage space much more effectively.

You'll never regret organizing under the sink, and it doesn't take long.

13. Clean the oven

We hate to say it, but it's time to clean the oven.

Bryan Griffin, professional cleaner and founder of Patriot Maids says, 'Where to focus? Hit the big appliances in your kitchen, such as your oven. It is hard work, but it really makes your whole kitchen feel fresher and more efficient.'

It is preferable to clean an oven without chemicals, as studies have shown that many commercial oven cleaners contain toxic ingredients such as sodium hydroxide, a corrosive or potassium hydroxide, a main ingredient in battery manufacturing.

To do this, you can either clean an oven with lemon, using much safer citric acid (in the form of lemon juice, from Walmart) to tackle grease or use a steam cleaner to deep clean a kitchen, including the oven, to melt grease and kill bacteria.

Bathrooms

As with kitchens, we should be cleaning a bathroom weekly to keep it hygienic, so spring cleaning should focus on the tougher tasks we usually forget about or don't need to be done as regularly.

14. Soak the shower head

Approximately 85% of Americans have hard water in their homes, which means limescale will build up more quickly.

One of the worst places for this is showerheads – an area many of us forget to clean regularly.

To clean a shower head and get rid of limescale, Sarah Jennings, a professional cleaner with Plumbworld says, 'Hard water stains build up fast, especially on taps and showerheads. Soak a cloth in white vinegar, wrap it around the affected area, and leave for 30 minutes before wiping it away.'

15. Wash bathroom textiles

Many of us wash towels weekly, or every few showers, to prevent bacteria, make towels soft again, and get rid of musty smells in the bathroom. But how often do you wash a bathmat? Or clean a shower curtain, for that matter?

Punteha van Terheyden says, 'Many bathmats and shower curtains can go in a warm water cycle in the washing machine to banish any odors and maintain a high level of hygiene. Double check the laundry symbols on the care tag first to avoid damage. I have some bath mats that have a rubber non slip backing and they dont cope well with high heat and need to be air dried.'

If you have glass doors instead of a curtain, clean shower glass with The Pink Stuff and a mildly abrasive sponge. It eats away at limescale without the need to scrub and takes less than 10 minutes.

16. Declutter linen cabinets

Decluttering and organizing a bathroom closet is a must every spring. Products have a habit of building up without us realizing, be it free samples, or mini toiletries from the holidays, it can cause a clutter tsunami by the time spring rolls around.

Brenda Scott, professional home organizer and owner of Tidy My Space says, 'A tidy home takes less money to maintain because you aren't buying duplicates. A tidy home allows you to know and find what you have, which will save you from buying items before you need them and reduces the chance of having to throw them away if they expired before you could use them.'

17. Scrub tile grout

Cleaning grout is no one's favorite task, but it needs to be done every spring to help avoid damage and permanent mold stains.

For general cleaning, Chris Willatt, founder of Alpine Maids says, 'Grout can be tough to clean. I suggest using Dawn dishwashing liquid and warm water. Mix a small amount of Dawn and warm water until you get a good amount of suds. Use a small brush, toothbrushes work great. Wet the brush and scrub the grout. Once done scrubbing wipe down the area with a wet microfiber cloth.'

To brighten old grout, Marla Mock, president at Molly Maids USA adds, 'Over time, grout and tiles can accumulate mold and mildew. To ensure they remain spotless and sanitary, use a specialized grout cleaner or a mixture of baking soda, such as Arm & Hammer Pure Baking Soda, from Amazon, and vinegar to scrub these areas.'

Bedrooms

Cleaning a bedroom in spring focuses more on decluttering tips and washing bed sheets than dusting, as this is something you should be doing weekly to reduce allergies and sleep better.

18. Switch to spring clothing

Out with winter and in with spring! Christina Giaquinto, a professional organizer from Modular Closets, recommends spending an afternoon decluttering spring clothes you've fallen out of love with. 'Organize your closet so all your spring clothes are front and center.

'This means putting your snow coats, snow boots, and ski outfits in storage and getting your light jackets, dresses, shorts, and flowy shirts ready to wear.'

To save space in your seasonal under-bed storage, pick up some large vacuum storage bags, from Walmart, reducing your clothing's footprint while protecting them from damage.

19. Clean and flip your mattress

Spring cleaning is all about tackling those tasks you usually put off, like cleaning your mattress.

Cleaning expert Tina Dawson from Toronto Maids says, 'Take off the bedding and vacuum it thoroughly. Then, lightly spray it with a mixture of water and white vinegar, and let it dry completely.' This will help get rid of any dirt and germs that may have accumulated over time.

Some mattresses benefit from being flipped or rotated to promote even wear and avoid the need to fix a sagging mattress. How often you turn your mattress will depend on your mattress type:

• Double-sided mattresses: such as innerspring mattresses, should be flipped every few months.
• Single-sided mattresses: such as memory foam or natural fiber mattresses, should be rotated, not flipped, every month to avoid sagging.

20. Wash comforters and pillows

Molly Freshwater, Founder of Secret Linen Store says, 'When transitioning from winter to summer, properly clean and store winter bedding items such as heavy blankets, winter duvets, and brushed cotton bedding. Wash or dry clean them first, then store them in airtight containers or vacuum-sealed bags [Target stocks XL Vacuum Bags to fit comforters] to protect them from dust, pests, and moisture. You may want to air out first before storing.

'Air your spring textiles thoroughly to remove any moisture and odors. Hang bedding and throws outside on a sunny day, or use a clothesline indoors if the outside is not an option for you.'

Most bedding can go in a washing machine, making washing a comforter and washing pillows quick and easy. The main limitation on this is the drum size of your best washing machine, as some may not be large enough for comforters. In this case, have your bedding professionally cleaned at a laundrette to avoid damage and make your washing machine last longer.

Living rooms

Cleaning a living room in spring should focus on your larger furniture pieces, removing a year's worth of grime.

21. Clean upholstery

Cleaning upholstery will be your main task in the living room, sucking dirt from sofas and armchairs after a long winter spent hunkering down.

Jennie Holmes, cleaning expert and branch manager at ServiceMaster Clean says, 'Use a microfibre cloth to remove any loose debris, and then use your vacuum to remove smaller bits of debris, paying special attention to around buttons and seams, where crumbs tend to hide.

'Then, check the care label on the chairs for the fabric. Some fabrics are “wet cleanable”, and some are not, so always check and, if unsure, try a cleaner in an inconspicuous area first.

'For food stains, it is generally best to use an enzyme-based cleaner [Such as Nature's Miracle Spray, from Walamrt] as this will “eat” into the stain and remove it – always blot and never rub as this can damage the face of the fabric. It is always best to start at the edge of the stain and work your way into the middle. This prevents the stain from spreading.'

To remove odors from upholstery, sprinkle a fine layer of baking soda over the cushions and leave to sit overnight. Then, brush away the excess powder before vacuuming.

Home offices

Home offices don't tend to get too dirty, but it is worth spending a little time in them each spring to declutter a home office and sanitize after flu season.

22. Clear out paperwork

Organizing paperwork at home is a must around springtime, as tax season is on the horizon.

Go through old bills, magazines, and papers, shredding anything that includes personal information. Clear out old notepads, brochures, leaflets, cards, and user manuals as long as you can find them as a PDF online.

When organizing important documents such as tax information, social security documents, or passports, use a fire-proof safe, such as the SentrySafe from The Home Depot, to keep them safe even in the event of a fire.

23. Clean your desk tools

Punteha, head of Solved, works from home and understands the importance of a clean, tidy office desk to improve home office productivity.

She recommends, 'Disinfecting your keyboard, monitor, mouse, and chargers, and tidy up unruly drawers. Don't forget to also wipe over your desk and office chair to kill germs for a sanitary space.'

Keeping a pack of disinfectant wipes, such as the Lysol wipes from Walmart, in your desk drawer makes this task quick and easy.

Outdoors

Spring cleaning doesn't stop when your home is looking fresh. Backyard cleaning is just as important to prepare outdoor spaces for the nicer weather ahead.

24. Refresh your patio and decks

Jeremy Yamaguchi of Lawn Love says, 'Spring is the perfect time to do a deep clean on outdoor spaces like patios, decks, and porches. You might consider spending time power washing surfaces to remove dirt, grime, and mildew in order to make the spaces look new again.'

If you do not have a powerwasher, using a moss and algae remover, such as Wet & Forget from Amazon, is a more affordable alternative.

25. Brush up outdoor furniture

When cleaning porches and patios, Jeremy adds, 'You'll also want to clean any outdoor furniture and rugs to help remove dirt and debris that have accumulated over the winter and get them ready for the warmer months.'

It is not recommended to use a pressure washer to clean patio furniture, as it can damage finishes. Instead, use warm soapy water, made with grease-fighting dish soap such as Dawn, from Walmart, and a soft sponge. Finish by drying with a towel to prevent streaks.

Laundry areas

Checking your laundry room essentials, cleaning appliances, and working through the things to declutter from a laundry room will make doing laundry easier for the rest of the year.

26. Clean you washer and dryer

Generally speaking, washing machines and dryers should be cleaned every month or two, to sanitize the drum and remove lint. However, with all the things you'll be freshening up over spring, it is worth doing a deep clean to ensure perfect results.

To clean a washing machine, Tim Conn, founder and president of commercial cleaners Image One USA says, 'The best things are white vinegar and baking soda. Run a hot cycle with one to two cups of white vinegar, followed by a second cycle where you sprinkle 1/2 cup of baking soda directly into the machine’s drum.

'Wipe down seals, dispensers, and other high-moisture areas that often harbor mold and grime using a damp cloth and mild detergent. This combination helps eliminate odors, dissolve detergent residue, and combat mineral buildup.'

To clean a dryer, unplug the appliance at the wall before emptying and cleaning the dryer vent, throwing lint in the trash. The drum can then be wiped down with a cloth dampened with vinegar before leaving to air dry.

27. Declutter toxic laundry products

There are several toxic laundry room items lurking in cabinets that could be damaging your laundry and your health.

Many commercial laundry detergents, for example, were found in a 2023 study to 'impair the epidermal barrier [...]. Daily exposure to detergent may cause skin barrier disruption and may contribute to the development of atopic diseases.'

Decluttering detergents and softeners full of artificial dyes and fragrances, and switching to natural alternatives, is a great way to boost your spring cleaning efforts and protect your health, especially as you don't need harsh chemicals to clean well.

28. Clean your laundry hampers

Cleaning clothes is all well and good, but if you put them straight back into your dirty laundry hamper, your work will be undone.

How you clean a laundry basket or hamper will depend on the material.

Plastic hampers can be cleaned with a mixture of white vinegar and warm water with a microfiber cloth.

Fabric laundry hampers may be machine washable if you can remove any hard wooden or metal components. Otherwise, spritz the fabric with distilled white vinegar before placing it in bright sunlight to air dry. Vinegar will kill germs and mold.

'There is no easier or more appropriate spring decor than a fresh cut branch of blossoms,' agrees interior designer Bethany Adams. 'If you're lucky enough to live with a bit of nature, head outside and start clipping! Forsythia branches are beautiful and long-lasting, cherry blossoms and apple blossoms are so pretty and will perfume your home, and even a sprig of green leaves indoors will be a welcome breath of fresh air after a long, cold winter.'

How to spring clean a bedroom

Your bedroom should be a relaxing space to unwind from the day's stresses and get the best night's sleep possible. There are some key things you can do to ensure this is always the case:

1. Clear the clutter

As life keeps us busy, it's easy for our bedroom to become cluttered with clothes, books, tech, and other personal belongings. It's easy to cover a sideboard, bedside or dressing table with bits and bobs – a face cream, make-up and toiletries, books and more. Before you know it, you are surrounded by clutter that makes the room feel busy and is not conducive to a relaxing bedroom environment.

Take a moment to declutter your bedroom. Clear surrounding surfaces and your floor, and use this time to have a clear-out – get rid of any old clothes, toiletries, and unwanted items. Make sure you have ample bedroom storage for the items you want to keep, and neatly store them away while keeping them easy to access. The simple act of clearing and decluttering will instantly lighten the room and evoke a sense of calm.

2. Opt for natural bedding

We spend a third of our lives sleeping, so it's important to invest in the best mattress and best bedding that not only looks good but feels good too. 

To get the most from your sleep, opt for natural materials that are allergen-resistant. Natural materials are also better for the environment and offer many benefits to humans. A Hungarian goose down duvet, for example, provides the ideal warmth, the right weight, and just enough drape to contour your body. Simple items like these can simplify your life and detox your space in an instant.

3. Embrace nature

Bring the outside in by decorating with plants and fresh flowers. Many houseplants have air-purifying properties, so introducing them into the bedroom will not only bring in a touch of greenery but also help improve air quality indoors.

Fresh flowers on a bedside table are beautiful to wake up to and can bring with them a calming natural fragrance. Similarly, bed linen in botanical prints, shades of green, and earthy tones all help to create a relaxing atmosphere, while textures such as linen and wool add a cozy feel.

4. Wash your bedding

When it comes to spring cleaning your bed, there are some key things you can do to keep everything in top shape:

• Wash your pillows and duvet at 40 degrees every 6-12 months using a non-bio (enzyme-free) detergent, using about a third of the usual amount.
• With your bed linen, you should wash your first wash at 40 degrees, then once a week at 30 degrees to go greener.
• Ensure your pillows, duvet and bed linen are dried thoroughly – tumble dry if necessary and remember they take longer to try than clothes. You may need to take your duvet to the launderette if you don't have a large-capacity machine.
• With your bed linen, opt for a low heat setting in the tumble drier or air dry in the sunshine to keep your whites bright. Iron on a high-steam setting while damp for minimal creases.
• Remember to use wool dryer balls when drying your bedding. They'll help dry your bedding more quickly and efficiently by creating gaps to allow more air to circulate around your laundry. They also agitate the fibers in your bed sheets, making them feel softer and cozier.
• Replace your pillows every 1 to 2 years for peak support and your duvet every five years to ensure you get the best sleep. The more you love your bedding, the more it will love you.
• With bed linen, you can replace cotton sheets every five years and Egyptian cotton sheets every seven years. With good care, you can ensure your bed linen stays at its best for many years.
• Make sure it's always easy to find a matching set of washed and ironed bed linen; store your bed linen sets together by folding them neatly after ironing, storing the whole set inside one of the pillowcases.

5. Throw the windows open

It's important to open your bedroom windows periodically throughout springtime. Not only does this help to circulate air and flush out pollutants, but it can also reduce indoor humidity and prevent mold growth. 

Moreover, fresh, cooler air promotes better sleep, while increasing natural light in your bedroom during the day can boost your mood and regulate circadian rhythms.
