Trust Ina Garten to season her food the proper way. The Barefoot Contessa is one of the most recognized faces in American cuisine – meaning her East Hampton kitchen is filled with professional appliances.

Here at Homes & Gardens, we take pleasure in scouting through her Instagram posts (not least because her monochromatic space is beautiful in its own right), where Garten is generous with not gatekeeping her go-to products. Most recently, we came across her favorite pepper mill, almost by accident, as her endorsement is easy to pass by.

When Garten posted a video on Instagram making the homemade croutons (as seen in her Cook Like a Pro cookbook), it encouraged a viewer to ask which pepper mill she uses. My pepper mill is called PepperMate, and it's the best,' Garten says. When the Barefoot Contessa reveals the best pepper mill on the market, there's nothing else to do but introduce it into your routine.

While it's always interesting to discover which products Garten uses, we're less surprised by her use of freshly ground black pepper instead of a pre-ground alternative. Naturally, pre-ground is convenient, but fresh pepper has a distinctly stronger, more vibrant aroma (thanks to the newly released essential oils). It's a more aromatic and flavorful way of seasoning food, and as a chef, this isn't lost on Garten.

The Peugeot company in France first manufactured a pepper mill in 1874, and since then, designers have experimented with varying models – some with knob twist, crank, ratchet, or motor. However, no matter the shape or brand, they all use gravity to feed peppercorns into a grinding mechanism. PepperMate began making pepper grinders in 1982 and, since then, has been used in gourmet kitchens and on TV cooking shows. Although, Garten's is our favorite to date.

While the beauty of trending interior styles is that many of them are highly versatile and able to be transitioned into home updates and renovations, some are harder to bring forward into new design plans.

With that being said, we have rounded up the cringest design trends of the last year, that we are so ready to part ways with in 2025 – along with some expert-approved trends that designers think you should be switching to instead.

1. Overly wavy decor

The squiggle is perhaps the most prominent symbol of early 2020s interior decor trends, with Scandinavian designers such as Gustaf Westman taking the world (and Gen Z decor in particular) by storm with their playful, wonky designs. However, the bubble is bursting around wavy designs in favor of something more natural.

'Wavy mirrors, abstract candles, and quirky prints had their moment, but in 2025, we’re moving toward designs inspired by nature,' says Chloe Barrow, interior expert at Laura James. 'Organic textures and patterns will replace the playful, abstract shapes that have been popular over the past few years. This shift reflects a growing desire for interiors that feel grounded and connected to the environment. Instead of synthetic shapes, look for materials like raw stone or ceramic in fluid, natural forms. The result is a more harmonious and enduring design aesthetic that blends with a wider range of styles.'

2. Fridgescaping

Perhaps the most polarizing (and impractical) trend on this list has to be fridgescaping – a method that involves decorating the inside of your fridge as you would a table.

Punteha van Terheyden, head of H&G's Solved says, 'As pretty as fridgescaping looks, who really has the time to artify their fresh goods and then keep up the hassle of maintaining it? I know I'd much rather be able to open mine and see exactly what I have to cook dinner with tonight, or items running out that I need to add to my grocery list. You're better off investing time instead on organizing the fridge.'

She continues, 'Ditch the pretty miniature plants and blooms required for fridgescaping and investing in smart fridge organizers. Opt for a tiered or stackable storage solution and it'll help avoid food waste which is the primary function of this vital kitchen appliance.'

3. Cottagecore

Reaching peak popularity around 2020, Cottagecore is also a trend that, as serene and palatable as it may be, is ready to be retired.

'The cozy, countryside vibe that defined this trend is giving way to the more modern and versatile maritime style,' Chloe says. 'While the charm of countryside living still resonates, the focus is shifting towards lighter, fresher aesthetics. Swap floral chintz for textured blues, and replace ruffled curtains with sleek linen drapes. This transition represents a move towards interiors that feel airy and open, reflecting a broader shift in lifestyle preferences for 2025.'

1. Dark Neutrals

A dark wood truly never goes out of style, and with Mocha Mousse on all of our radars as Pantone's Color of the Year for 2025, dark neutrals are definitely going to be prominent this year.

'Rich, earthy tones like mahogany and chestnut are going to dominate interiors in 2025,' Chloe states. 'These colors create a sense of depth and elegance, perfect for spaces that feel cozy yet refined. Whether it’s through furniture, floor or wall treatments, or accessories, darker neutrals will add a classic quality to any room.'

She continues, 'Darker neutrals also offer a brilliant foundation for layering textures. For example, pairing a mahogany wall with velvet cushions or a wool throw in complementary tones creates a space that can feel incredibly luxurious, especially in Edwardian and Victorian homes, or those inspired by that era. They also work well with bold accent colors like mustard or teal for a striking contrast, allowing you to experiment with vibrant decor.'

2. Maritime Style

Regardless of location, those who live coastally or landlocked alike can embrace the peaceful nature of maritime-inspired interiors.

'Think deep blues, soft whites, and subtle nautical elements that evoke a sense of calm and escape,' Chloe says of the coastal decor trend. 'This isn’t about bold anchors or stripes, but rather a more refined approach that nods to seaside living. Details like woven baskets, light oak furniture, and fabrics reminiscent of fishing nets add authenticity to this maritime theme. Incorporating ocean hues through ceramics, artwork, or rugs can help ground the space without feeling too literal. This trend will be commonly used by those looking to bring a sense of tranquility and escape, making their home feel like a holiday.'

3. Animal Print

Finally, while decorating with animal print certainly is a bold choice, Chloe makes the case for it thanks to some expert styling methods.

'Leopard print made a splash in fashion last year, and now it’s creeping into our homes,' she states. 'In 2025, we’ll see bold animal prints adorning statement pieces like cushions, curtains, and even wallpaper. To keep this trend sophisticated, focus on mixing prints with subtle textures and neutral tones. A leopard-print armchair paired with a natural jute rug or velvet sofa adds an eclectic yet balanced feel to a room. Accessories like animal-print lampshades or ottomans can also make a bold statement without overwhelming the space.'

Try mixing and maxing trends for a sustainable way to incorporate multiple new trends into the home at once; for example, opt for a chocolate brown variation of an animal print throw pillow. Above all, opt for pieces that speak to you and your design sensibilities – those are the ones that never go out of style.

You may have read the alarming headlines about black plastic recently. A study published by Chemosphere reported high levels of toxic flame retardants in household items made from black plastic. However, it later emerged that the researchers made a math error when calculating 'maximum exposure' limits, overstating the risks. This might have left you feeling confused about what to do with your black plastic utensils.

When I was researching the best non-toxic air fryers and talking to toxicologists, I realized that managing plastic in the kitchen is fairly straightforward. If you’re looking to minimize all risk of toxins leaching into your food, the best approach is to avoid black plastic entirely. If you’re less concerned about health and prefer to cling to your existing tools, just take precautions: avoid exposing black plastic to heat and regularly check for signs of peeling or chipping – as this could end up in your food.

I'm a health-conscious person, so I'm taking the New Year as an opportunity to refresh and renew. Here’s how I'm taking stock of all my black plastic utensils, checking for signs of damage, which tools I'm trashing, and which replacements I'm choosing for peace of mind in 2025.

Where should you start?

First of all, glance around your kitchen to take stock of all the black plastic you own. You might have a spatula by the stove, a slotted spoon in a drawer, or even some plastic-lined travel mugs in the back of your cupboard.

If you're finding it hard to tell which utensils are made from plastic or not, there are some tell-tale signs. Black plastic is smooth and hard, and usually very inexpensive. If you've got black silicone, it will feel more rubbery and flexible.

The second step is to check for damage. Peeling, chipping, or deep scratches on black plastic are all signs of degradation, which increase the risk of chemicals ending up in your food. Finally, ask yourself: will this come into direct contact with heat when you're cooking or serving? If that's a yes, that also increases the toxic risks, so it's another one for the trash pile.

The black plastic I ditched

I found two black plastic spatulas lurking in my kitchen drawers. Since they will come into direct contact with high heat and food in a frying pan, I'm uneasy about the toxicity risks. I also noticed that the spatula on the left had some silver plastic on the handle that was chipping and flaking, and could end up in my dinner.

I found some more black plastic in my cutlery drawer, but I'm not concerned about these items. The black plastic handles won't come into contact with my food or direct heat. Plus, I inspected the handles and the plastic was in good condition. No peeling or chipping.

What should you do with old black plastic utensils?

Black plastics are not recyclable. You could toss them out in the normal trash (although that isn't very sustainable, since they'll end up in landfill). Or, you could put them in your DIY box and find uses for them like stirring paint.

What should you replace them with?

This part is easy. There are multiple alternative materials (like stainless steel, BPA-free silicone, bamboo and wood) that will last a long time if you care for them correctly. Here are my top picks.

I don't drink very often, but I love a citrus cocktail on a special occasion; whether it’s a splash of lime in a margarita or a twist of lemon for a French 75. But getting that juice? I'm embarrassed to admit as a kitchen appliances editor, I've never invested in one of the best juicers. The holidays are all about showcasing festivity and joy. I don't believe in pairing it back at Christmas as, in my eyes, it defeats the point – it's not every day you get to hang sparkly things wherever you see fit.

Kitsch and retro marry harmoniously with the joyous decadence of Christmas, so this decor item might be the perfect fit this year. I've always been a little unsure about tinsel due to its kitschy connotations, but with retro Christmas trends becoming all the rage, these designers have given tinsel a much-needed revival. And it's not just any type of tinsel that's becoming a staple for interior designers, it's that pretty icicle-like stuff, officially called lametta tinsel.

It turns out that this more delicate form of tinsel pairs with any Christmas tree theme, from the vintage vibes it's often associated with to more minimalist and even rustic schemes you might not expect tinsel to work with. Tinsel provides that lavish touch which is essential at Christmas.

Let's take a look at the designer's takes on the retro decor piece, from maximalist style trees to minimal monochrome looks.

1. Combine lametta tinsel with vintage ornaments

There's been a major revival of the retro in recent years – it's something we've witnessed across all aspects of design, from furniture to homewares. Christmas goes hand-in-hand with tradition, so what better theme to incorporate in your tree than one that evokes nostalgic memories?

Gray Walker Interiors has decorated her tree with instantly recognizable lametta tinsel and vintage-style glass baubles. Retro, kitsch-style ornaments are one of the most common types of decor in collections across the globe. Usually made from glass, they're delicate, but bold in color, shape, and often the motif is something unexpected too. They pair so well with all types of tinsel, particularly the icicle kind, fusing shine and color as one.

Gray is a big advocate of tinsel and vintage decor, explaining, 'I love an old-fashioned Christmas tree placed in front of a window that has a street view and next to a fireplace if possible! Loads of white lights, classic decorations, and tinsel tossed strategically is my personal formula.'

2. Create a rustic shimmering tree

Icicle tinsel looks effective on all styles of Christmas trees but looks surprisingly good on a paired-back, neutral tree like the one in designer Amber Lewis's living room. Amber uses fewer ornaments on her tree and goes with white and brown baubles, allowing the tinsel to steal the show and shine in all its glory.

Los Angeles-based interior designer Liad Schwartz says that by sticking to a cohesive color palette your tree will be effortlessly stylish, no matter what trends you want to introduce. 'Think of it as weaving your tree into the design story of your space. Whether you go for classic gold and silver or trendy jewel tones, keeping it cohesive makes your tree feel intentional and beautifully integrated.'

The key to this look is going for a minimal base and using a handful of the baubles that match the shade of the tinsel. Don't be afraid to go wild with the lametta, you can afford to if you're working with a minimal array of baubles.

3. Go monochromatic and delicate

Although it's often seen as being loud and proud, icicle tinsel can look quite elegant when arranged sparingly. It doesn't need to be used in large quantities, in fact using a handful of strips can create a delicate, frosted look that accentuates your tree instead of dominating. Minimal Christmas looks are all the rage, centering around the finer details.

Designer Kathy Kuo says that embracing the retro Christmas trend doesn't mean going bold and colorful, particularly if the rest of your tree is simple. 'A moderate use of tinsel is a lovely way to add some metallic glamor and sparkle to your home during the holiday season. Tinsel can have a reputation for being a bit retro, but I think that can be a good thing, especially when paired with a minimalist approach to tree ornaments so the tinsel isn't competing too much with additional decor elements.'

The classic metallic shades add sparkle and don't detract or clash with your beautiful baubles or ornaments. You can pick up Lametta tinsel really affordably at Amazon and Target, and there's a variety of colors to choose from. I like Silver or Gold best for a classic look that will work with whatever style you go for.

4. Go all out with the tinsel

It wouldn't be fair to leave out a maximalist tree. Christmas is all about excessive displays and lavish decor, which are some of the core foundations of maximalism. Instagammer Leben Riebeis not holding back with the tinsel. Inspired by past decadence he's covered this faux lilac tree in silver lametta. You can't say it's not original!

Designer Jonathan Adler, takes the same approach and is all about the excess, especially this time of year. He says, ‘The holidays are not a time to hold back: the more twinkle the better. And what’s twinklier than a silver tree? Or a white tree packed with baubles? Whatever you do, don’t skimp. Nothing’s sadder than an under-accessorized tree.’ There are no rules about how much decor to use, the more the better for ultimate festivity!

Leben Riebe (A.K.A @vintageholiday) takes inspiration from historic looks, bringing the past to life with new decorating styles. He describes his tree as a recollection of vintage Christmases from the 1940s. Leben says the tinsel 'cascades like a waterfall' and he's not wrong, it's got a magical, draped quality that falls effortlessly down the tree. However be warned, you may need a few packs of tinsel to achieve this look...

I refuse to hear anyone calling icicle tinsel 'tacky' or 'chintzy' anymore, as in my eyes, it's the decor we all need to create a festive, fun, and twinkly masterpiece. I was always hesitant to bring out the tinsel when it came to my own holiday decorating, but I'm happy that the retro has made its big comeback. These stunning trees have showcased tinsel's true elegance, reminding me how versatile and elegant it can be.

One of the wonderful perks of being an interior stylist for magazines is being welcomed into people’s beautiful homes at Christmas time. It really is a highlight in the calendar being able to transform homes into magical wonderlands or to simply style up festive scenes and decorating ideas in the photo studio.

Over the years I’ve styled all manner of properties, from small country cottages to large manor houses, and throughout that time I've seen a number of Christmas decorating ideas come and go, however, there are certain looks that I find endure year after year.

Below I've rounded up my favorite looks for styling timeless Christmas schemes from traditional berry tones and festive foliage to rustic Scandi looks along with some handy decorating tips.

5 timeless Christmas decor styles

When it comes to creating timeless Christmas decor you can't go wrong with seasonal evergreen foliage. Garlands, wreaths and centerpieces made from fresh fir, pine, holly and ivy are guaranteed to bring a festive yet sophisticated feel. Evergreen seasonal foliage forms the foundation of many festive schemes and can be styled up with extra decorations in order to capture myriad looks – it's definitely my go to.

For me, the key to decorating is to complement your existing decor and not to overpower it. Decorations in subtle champagne, gold and antique brass hues are wonderfully versatile as they will bring seasonal sparkle without taking away from your room scheme and work beautifully paired with all manner of colors. Additionally, you can't go wrong with handcrafted decorations for a touch of fun and unique charm

'The key to any Christmas decor scheme is consistency, pick a theme and stick to it throughout your space. Layer textures, experiment with lighting, and incorporate natural materials to make your decor feel elevated yet welcoming,' says Sophia Ayrton-Grime, Interior Designer and Founder of Atelier Raff. 'Most importantly, remember that Christmas is about creating a warm, joyful environment for those you love.'

1. Traditional berry reds with green

When styling a lived-in home I always try to stay true to the homeowner’s ethos, bringing in a few carefully chosen pieces inspired by the aesthetic and palette used throughout the room I’m styling. In period homes, a traditional scheme of berry red and gold is a seasonal styling staple.

A classic palette of red and green featuring swathes of fresh foliage with hints of gold is the classic combination for capturing the nostalgia of Christmases past. I like to incorporate a variety of seasonal foliage as well as potted bulbs and amaryllis in red and berry tones.

However, what I often find is that tonal variations on this classic theme can be far more enduring. Rather than pairing bright red and with forest green and bright yellowish, dazzling golds, I tend to go a bit more subtle and pair pinky plums and berry reds with muted gold or antique brass. These tones tend to feel less gaudy and have a mellowness that works beautifully with the aged surfaces and patinas of wood and stone. Alternatively adding in touches of navy works well, too.

In this traditional cottage, I opted for a scheme of berry red and green but dotted in pops of blue and brown paper for a twist on the traditional look.

Homeware and furniture designer Susie Watson offers an array of homewares which I often turn to when it comes to styling period homes for the festive season. 'I am hugely inspired by the colors in nature, rich reds, burnt oranges, and deep greens make the most delicious combination - for me deep reds, plum, dark greens, and gold are the colors that mean Christmas,’ says Susie Watson.

‘It’s not just about decorations at Christmas, it’s about making your home feel warm and cozy, too. I love to add plenty of cushions in rich tones and in a mix of fabrics to create a welcoming, layered look. Fringed velvet and silk cushions alongside muted rustic linens and plaid wool throws in rich jewel tones work wonderfully for a timeless scheme. Sumptuous velvets and silk catch the light beautifully. And of course, no Christmas scheme is complete without candlelight and a real Christmas tree.’

A berry-toned, block-printed tablecloth is a wonderful way to set the tone for a festive table. The small-scale decorative pattern brings a comforting and eclectic feel which I love – I find plain red tablecloths can sometimes feel too bold.

'Berry and plum tones are just as Christmassy, particularly when paired with copper and gold or silver decorations, and lots of candlelight,' says Sarah Kostoris, founder of home brand Sarah K. 'You could use red grapes, and figs and lots of green foliage to decorate the table for a classic feel.'

New York City-based Interior designer Phillip Thomas is a big fan of the traditional red and green scheme, pairing it with pops of tartan and traditional blue and white tableware.

'I love to decorate our home with our favorite, timeless holiday decor each Christmas. We deck the halls with fresh Cypress Norfolk Pine, Cedar, and White Pine garland strewn on every surface or in vases mixed with holly and pine cones, twinkling lights that catch all of the sparkling ornaments just right, a swish of a classic tartan plaid tablecloth from Ralph Lauren or Williams Sonoma layered with our favorite Spode 'Blue Italian' plates that we have used for years for our holiday meals,' says Phillip.

2. Scandi Woodland

Nordic and Scandinavian countries do Christmas decor so well. There’s something magical about a timber-clad home in the snowy woodland decorated with rustic natural materials and folksy decorations like gingerbreads and dried oranges with brown paper packages nestled under the tree.

The great thing about this look is it relies heavily on natural materials, making it wonderfully sustainable. Think foraged foliage, white decorations, pinecones, cinnamon sticks, folding paper stars and pinwheel decorations in a pared-back palette of green and white with hints of red or orange - or even pale blue for an icy Scandinavian Christmas decor scheme. But again, the look isn’t just about decorations – plenty of cozy textures such as chunky woven throws and sheepskins are key, not forgetting plenty of candles.

'To style a Scandi theme this Christmas, forgo traditional festive pairings of red and gold and instead combine a pared-back color palette with soft sage green tones, natural wood finishes and fresh festive foliage,' advises Shelley Cochrane, accessories buyer at Furniture Village.

'Carry this theme throughout the home. In the living room, decorate a Christmas tree with rustic decorations crafted from wood or paper and drape foliage, mistletoe, and pinecones across the mantelpiece. This will create a magical woodland feel that nods to the season but is chic and elegant.'

'The dining table is center stage of Christmas celebrations so style an all-white tablescape with just a hint of greenery for a look that exudes festivity,' adds Shelly. If I’m looking to style up a timeless and elegant Christmas scheme then, fresh foliage is always my go-to. Creating wreaths, garlands and hanging centerpieces with greenery foraged from the countryside works with every style of property.

To make this look extra special use a variety of greenery with different leaf shapes and forms. Holly, fir and ivy are seasonal staples, but all sorts of evergreen foliage can add interest to fresh displays. I love the bluey-tinge of eucalyptus along with certain varieties of conifer as well as bay, skimmia and even Clematis Vitalba with its fluffy seedheads, (also known as Old Man's Beard). Sculptural varieties of pine such as Strobus Pine work well and I always look for varieties with variegated leaves of holly and ivy for extra color and texture.

The comments are filled with admiration. Julieta told me she bought the mold four years ago and will cherish it forever. But some people remain curious... Do these molds actually work? Many commenters admitted they've had one gathering dust in a cupboard that they've never used; they weren't convinced they could create the same show-stopping effect.

As a kitchen appliances expert and trained cook, it's my job to test the best stand mixers, trendiest baking equipment, and best countertop ovens. So, I knew I had to try the Nordic Ware sensation for myself. Could they really be as magical as they seem on screen? Here's my review.

My review of the Nordic Ware pumpkin bundt tin

Nordic Ware kindly sent me a few items to try out: a pumpkin-shaped Bundt tin, a pine tree tin, and a beautifully curated recipe book by Melanie Johnson. I was almost as captivated by this book as I was by the tins themselves. I couldn't stop folding down pages to bookmark delicious flavor combinations. There's a Cookies 'n' cream Bundt, Sticky Toffee, and even S'mores ( a marshmallow-coated chocolate cake with graham cracker filling... I mean, how delicious?).

The trick to using Nordic Ware tins

I set out to make a seasonal, pumpkin spice batter. But before I could start baking, I had to tackle the most critical step – preparing the tin. I hadn’t realized just how essential this part was, until I researched it. Nordic Ware is clear: the pan must be prepped with baking spray that contains flour, like this one from Target, to ensure a flawless release.

This is where I panicked – I couldn't find that specific spray locally to me. Nordic Ware says, ‘We recommend only using baking spray with flour in it. Please do NOT use a regular cooking spray because it tends to leave a sticky residue on the pan, and the cake may stick. The residue left on the pan may be very difficult to clean completely.’

A sigh of relief, as I realized I could use their approved alternative: a generous coating of melted butter, applied with a good pastry brush and finished with a dusting of flour.

Another top tip that I stumbled across after some experimentation: use a large ice cream scoop or spoon to transfer the batter into the tin. It's far easier than scraping with a spatula, which turned out pretty messy – the last thing you want to do is compromise the clean lines of the pan’s intricate design.

The moment of truth

Once the tin was filled, I placed it into the oven and eagerly awaited the results. Thirty minutes later, I pulled the tin out, resisting the temptation to flip it immediately. Nordic Ware’s instructions are clear: you must cool the cake in the tin for 10 minutes before attempting to release it. This step ensures the cake sets properly and doesn’t crumble when inverted.

I followed these instructions to the letter, and I’m so glad I did. The moment I tapped the tin and revealed the cake, I was greeted with a perfectly formed bouquet of pumpkins – each curve defined, smooth, and elegant.

I brought it to a dinner party and the hosts were equally thrilled. I was flattered but couldn't take credit – it was all the tin's work!

However, I was nervous about the taste. Could something so sculptural actually taste good? The cake was a little dense in my opinion, but still delicious. Our friends actually kept the cake to eat throughout the week, they liked it that much.

Clean up and maintenance

You might be thinking: are Nordic Ware pans dishwasher-safe? Well, hand washing is recommended for all Nordic Ware pans. The Bundt tins are made of high-quality cast aluminum and the inside is a silicone-based nonstick coating made, without PFAS (a bonus for anyone interested in non-toxic cookware). You need to wash your pans after every use to avoid residue build-up.

I used a soft sponge and gentle dish soap to wipe away the oil layer and any leftover crumbs, which was easy and quick. One thing to note: the tins are quite large, so you need to devote a good chunk of cupboard space to storing them.

From scratching the surface with metal utensils to preheating without oil, the very thought of these Dutch oven mistakes has me clenching my teeth. Such careless handling could render your pot irreparably damaged. An expensive blunder, especially if you've invested in one of the most luxurious Staub or Le Creuset models.

The good news? Once you understand best practice, your Dutch oven will be your most cherished kitchen companion, providing decades of effortlessly tasty meals. As a trained cook, I've listed the biggest, cringe-worthy mistakes to watch out for.

1. Preheating without oil or butter

Never preheat an empty Dutch oven, especially if it’s enameled. Doing so can cause the enamel to crack from thermal shock. Instead, add your oil or butter to the pot before you start cooking. Let it heat gradually and look for a gentle ripple in the oil or foaming in the butter, which signals the right cooking temperature.

Chef's Tip: Keep an eye out. If the oil begins smoking or the butter starts to brown, it is too hot.

2. Using high heat

The beauty of a Dutch oven is its ability to retain heat efficiently. High heat is rarely needed; it can lead to burnt food build-up and damaged enamel. According to Le Creuset, 'Medium or low heat will provide the best results for cooking, even for frying and searing. Once the pan is hot, almost all cooking can be continued on lower settings.'

Chef's Tip: You might think you need to sear meat at high temperatures, but it's actually best to use medium heat and let the meat develop a crust, before flipping. It takes a few minutes, but it's the correct way to create flavor and reduce long-term damage to your Dutch oven.

3. Using a cheap knock-off

If you're looking for a Dutch oven that will last for years, a knock-off version of the best brands is always going to disappoint you. Fake models have thinner walls and less durable materials, which are prone to uneven heating, chipping, and staining over time. 4. Using too little oil, fat, or liquid

The cooking liquid should completely cover the base of the pan before heating begins. If you don’t use enough, you’re setting yourself up for some sticky situations. Without that oil barrier, your food is more likely too burnt and hard to lift off, leaving you with a stubborn mess. You might end up reaching for a metal utensil to scrape things off, which is a terrible idea (and leads me onto my next point).

Chef's Tip: I prefer using a mixture of oil and butter for shallow frying, as it creates a lovely rich flavor and increases the smoke point.

5. Scratching the pan with metal utensils

While Dutch ovens are tough, their enamel coating can be scratched by metal utensils. Silicone, wooden, or plastic tools are recommended. Le Creuset say, 'Hand-held electric or battery-operated beaters should not be used. Their blades will damage the enamel. Knives or utensils with sharp edges should not be used to cut foods inside a pan.'

Chef's Tip: Invest in a gentle set of silicone utensils, like these from OXO. Your frying pans will thank you, too.

6. Overcrowding the pot

It may be tempting to fit as much food as possible into your Dutch oven, but overcrowding leads to uneven cooking, especially when searing meats. Give your ingredients enough space to develop proper browning and maximum flavor.

Chef's Tip: If you're cooking a large meal, you can brown ingredients in two or three batches. I do this when cooking a large chili con carne. The space around the mince helps to achieve a beautiful crust and depth of flavor in the sauce.

7. Choosing the wrong size for your oven and stovetop

It's not a good look to be desperately trying to stuff a massive pot into your oven when your guests have arrived. You might think you’ll only use it for soups and stews, but you never know when you’ll want to bake something in it! While it’s tempting to go for a larger Dutch oven for family feasts, always make sure it fits comfortably in your oven.

Also, match the pan’s base size to your stovetop heat zone – this will avoid flaming or overheating the sides and damaging the handles.

Chef's tip: A 5-quart pot can create 5-6 servings, while a 7-quart Dutch oven can feed up to 8 people.

8. Plunging a hot Dutch oven into cold water

Always cool your Dutch oven after cooking. Plunging a hot pan into cold water can crack the enamel due to thermal shock.

Chef's tip: Simply let your pot cool down before washing up.

9. Cleaning with abrasive materials

Use a gentle brush to remove any food – just avoid metal scourers or harsh cleaning agents, as they can damage the enamel surface. Le Creuset recommends, 'filling the pan with warm water and let soak for 15 to 20 minutes before washing.'

Chef's tip: Don't forget to dry the pot thoroughly, too! If you store away regular cast iron that's still damp, it could develop rust.

10. Touching the burning hot handles

It's a bit obvious, but I'll include this point so you don't make the same painful mistake! Those cast iron handles and knobs get incredibly hot. Always use oven mitts to avoid burns, especially when transferring the pot from the stove to the oven or table.

Chef's Tip: Invest in a pair of colorful oven mitts (I'm obsessed with the gorgeous patterns from Anthropologie) and keep them nearby!

If there's one thing I'm always reaching for in fall, it's a cozy blanket to snuggle up under. But, it's difficult to know how to fold blankets, and how to store them. Luckily, Di has the perfect solution, that doesn't have to involve folding!

'People can start by organizing blankets for easy access,' she says. 'Instead of letting them pile up on the couch or in random spots, use a decorative basket or bin to neatly store them. A well-organized basket of blankets feels intentional and makes the room look more put together.'

2. Organize your board games and puzzles in one designated spot

Fall and winter are the seasons for board games – so make sure yours are organized ahead of time, recommends Di.

'Now, for families that love game nights during the colder months, organize your board games and puzzles in one designated spot,' she says. Use a storage ottoman, a cabinet, or a low shelf to keep everything in order.'

'Another easy win is to use trays to organize your coffee table clutter,' she says. 'The coffee table can often become a catch-all for remote controls, candles, books, and mugs of hot drinks.

'Sometimes, your living room might become a bit of a drop zone, especially if it's near the entrance,' says Di. 'To prevent that clutter from taking over, try to designate a space for winter gear.'

Di recommends setting up a stylish coat rack, or using wall hooks, for easy storage of jackets, scarves, and hats, which will help keep things organized and easily accessible.

'Rather than leaving them scattered on surfaces, use a small drawer or a decorative box to store everything in one place – candles, matches, and even candle snuffers. You can organize your candles by scent or size, which makes it so much easier to find what you're in the mood for. Plus, having them neatly tucked away means no more hunting for matches when you're ready to set the ambiance.'

Every week on HGTV's Celebrity IOU, Drew and Johnathan Scott work with our favorite actors to renovate the home of one of their loved ones. This week, the property brothers collaborated with Jennifer Jason Leigh. The group rebuilt her longtime family friend's kitchen and living room for one of the most stunning results we've seen on the show.

Leigh chose to work with the Scott Brothers on the home renovation of her longtime family friend Nori, and her husband, Ely. Jennifer jokes: 'I’ve always wanted to give her the moon, and now I get to give her something that she can’t return.' Nori is an amazing chef and frequently cooks meals for 12 to 14 people. Thus, the kitchen remodel needed to reflect her penchant for hosting. At the same time, functionality was a must-have, and Leigh, Johnathan and Drew prioritized the practical in almost every aspect of this design.

Although the sleek white cabinets and gold hardware convey that aesthetics were important in this space, kitchen storage was the number one aspect the trio focused on in this redesign of Nori's home. Top and bottom cupboards were optimized for storage with the integration of drawers, and the building of large cabinets above the refrigerator. Drew and Johnathan integrated banquette seating in the dining space, allowing them to build further cabinetry on either side of the table. Not only does this space look beautiful, but it functions beautifully as well.

In addition to the large amount of storage, Leigh and the Scotts optimized the modern kitchen by using durable materials. They selected a white and gray marbled porcelain for the countertops and the backsplash which will last for years and years to come. It's known as one of the most long-lasting kitchen countertop options. Additionally, the choice of white cabinets is extremely durable because the shade is completely timeless. No matter the year, Nori will be able to keep this color and her kitchen will look brand new. An abundance of natural light makes it a pleasant room in which to spend time, creating sustainability in the space long-term.

The final focus in Nori's neutral living room and white kitchen was integrating personal touches. This is an essential element to creating spaces that you want to live in. For instance, the brothers worked with an artist to build a memorial to Nori's son on one of the shelves. KitchenAid's new design is certainly on the expensive side, but the wide range of mixer attachments you can tack on (pasta makers, meat grinders and ice cream churners) adds exceptional value. It's no wonder the Artisan mixer was voted our best stand mixer of 2024.

When it comes to durability, KitchenAid's die-cast metal construction means it's solid, sturdy and built to last. However, like many naturally luxurious pieces, the walnut wood bowl will require some TLC. Alternative stand mixers

If KitchenAid's evergreen mixer and walnut wooden bowl are just a little too pricey, you can't go wrong with the classic Artisan design. Kitchen knife storage is a dicey (pun intended) subject. To display out in the open or to hide away in a drawer? Well, it can be dependent on kitchen size. While we're all for showing off a particularly impressive set of knives, hanging sharp utensils on a metal strip is also a fantastic way to preserve counter and cabinet space.

Drew Barrymore is on the wall-knife wavelength, having recently shared a video in her beloved turquoise kitchen. Behind the actor and Drew Barrymore Show host, we can see a metallic strip hanging above her oven, with an array of knives and scissors stuck on. The combination of easy access and simple display is enough to have us reconsidering the best knife storage for our kitchens.

Experts say that kitchen knife storage goes hand in hand with overall organization, which should be looked at as a fun challenge rather than a home stressor, as Christina Lee, co-founder of Graceful Spaces Organizing, explains.

'When it comes to kitchen organization, getting creative with storage is the name of the game, especially if you're working with limited storage and a smaller space,' she explains. 'The good news is that there are a wide variety of organizational solutions available these days to help you maximize your space in a way that is functional and beautiful.'

Lee explains that kitchen knife storage is highly dependent on a space's existing design, for example, whether there is ample countertop real estate or bare walls.

'Before you run to the store to buy the product, determine where it makes the most sense for you to store your knives,' Lee states. 'Whether it's out on the counter or in a drawer, take a few minutes to evaluate how frequently you use them, if they need to be stored to the right or left side of the stove depending on which hand is your dominant (yes this matters!), and overall where it makes the most sense for this zone to live.'

She continues, 'For some, storing them right next to the stove would make the most sense. For others, [putting them] in a kitchen island drawer might work best. Also, take time to evaluate your inventory. Eliminate what you do not use! This initial step will help you determine your product needs.'

There are specific brands and products that Lee recommends, with materials ranging from bamboo and wood to shiny metal, like Barrymore's wall strip.

'If you plan on storing your knives on the counter, we highly recommend investing in a knife stand set by Material,' she says. 'At Graceful Spaces, we continue to purchase this brand for our clients as these premium sets are high-quality and beautiful. There are also amazing options at Williams Sonoma that will allow you to display your knives beautifully on your countertop.'

We recommend a metallic wall strip for kitchen knives in any small kitchens, or kitchens with limited storage space. Place knives from largest to smallest along the strip for a visually pleasing appearance.

There's nothing like a cold drink on a summer's day. An ice-cold beer or chilled soda is the perfect accompaniment to a garden party and when cooking and grilling outdoors.

However, drink coolers can be surprisingly expensive. Big brand names like Yeti and Igloo often sell coolers for around $100, and that's money that can be saved.

I've uncovered three foolproof methods to keep drinks cool without a cooler, including one I use every summer.

1. The ice bucket method

This is easily my favorite method. People avoid it because they worry the ice will melt too fast, but it's surprisingly effective with a couple of small tips and tricks I have used over the years. While there are lots of beautiful buckets out there that look great on your tablescape, these aren't always effective. In fact, my advice from personal experience is to get as big and as cheap a bucket as you can.

I recommend using a plastic or rubber bucket because a metal bucket conducts heat more effectively, meaning ice melts faster. It's not pretty, but a big animal feed bucket like this from Tractor Supply is perfect. My family's cookouts tend to be pretty small, so I use a smaller flexible bucket like this from Amazon. In a pinch, you could even do this in a bathtub, but if you're hosting a cookout you may not want your guests trekking in and out of your home for a drink.

To keep your drinks cool for hours, fill the bucket with ice water. It's important you add water because otherwise, it won't work. A bucket of ice is hard to push drinks into, and a mistake most people make is to place their bottles and cans directly on top of the ice. This chills the bottom of the drinks, but not the entire container. What often happens is that some of the drink is cool, but not the entirety, so the resulting drink is surprisingly warm. Ice water, however, is almost as cold and can surround the whole container, chilling the whole thing.

It's an obvious point but make sure you put your bucket in the shade; it's best if it's under a wall or a porch. It's an obvious point, but easy to forget, and can make your bucket last a few hours more.

The next tip is to add a little salt, around a cup for every gallon of water. Salt reduces ice's melting point, which means the temperature of the water can become even colder than usual. It makes your drinks much colder. The only downside is that it can make your drinks a little salty around the rim, but the excess can be wiped off pretty easily.

2. The wet towel method

Another method if you don't have a cooler is to use a wet paper towel. It's as straightforward as it sounds. Wet a towel and wrap it around whatever drink you want to chill, then put it in the freezer.

However, while it works, it's not as effective as the ice bucket method. What's more, it's a lot of prep if you've got a lot of drinks to freeze, which defeats the point - at that stage you might as well just put all your drinks in the freezer ahead of time. If you want your cold drinks on hand while you hang out in the backyard, you'll find this method a little frustrating.

3. The pool method

Head of Gardens Rachel Bull says 'If you don't have any ice or refrigeration on hand, your next best bet is to dunk your drinks in cold water. If you have one, you can float your drinks in a pool, a hot tub with the heater off, or in a creek.' Just make sure you wipe your drinks off before you drink them, as you could get a chlorine taste from a pool.

There are a couple of ways to do this. The most obvious is to buy a pool drinks float like this from Amazon.

The problem with these is that they need ice to keep cool, which you may not have on hand. In that case, you can use a mesh laundry bag like this from Amazon to dunk the drinks in the pool. It's not pretty, but it keeps them all together and submerged, and colder than they'd be if you left them on the side, but to be fair, it won't be by much.

When asked to picture a luxury kitchen, one material is likely to spring to mind: marble immediately. This feature, in all its good looks, continuously impresses designers who are working with an ultra-luxe brief – but arguably, nothing looks quite as beautiful as veined marble. It is perhaps unsurprising, therefore, that this very feature is the basis of Giada De Laurentiis's kitchen.

With her show Giada at Home, Italian-born chef De Laurentiis has created her career from her kitchen, so of course, the space is among the most beautiful in the country. Adorned with veined gray marble (including on the backsplash and countertops), the room is a masterclass in how to bring luxe materials into a domestic setting – but as designers explain, there's more to this feature than its good looks.

While decorating with marble will always be beautiful (especially when used in such excess as in De Laurentiis's space), Oliver Webb, the director at Cullifords, explains that veined options are perfect for disguising any small discolorations that may occur on our surfaces over time.

'We would recommend marble to any homeowner looking for something that is timeless and elegant and exudes a ‘wow’ factor. Marble can enhance the look and feel of a home with its intricate veining, and with regular care, there is no reason why your marble surface cannot last for many years to come,' Webb begins.

As with most things, this luxury kitchen feature comes with some concerns – one of which is that stains and discolorations will emerge over time. However, if we opt for a veined option, like De Laurentiis's, we can enjoy a cleaner aesthetic for longer.

'Choosing marble with busy veining and breakouts of color can help to disguise any small discolorations that may occur over time,' Webb says.

'As a softer stone, marble could scratch and we would always recommend a chopping board, never cutting directly onto the surface, being mindful of what is placed directly onto the stone. Selecting a honed or textured finish rather than polished can help to make marks less visible, especially when in direct sunlight.'

Plus, whether we choose veined marble or one solid hue, Webb reassures us that there are some preventive measures to keep this material looking new.

'A common concern is the potential for stains. Due to the propensity to etch, extra care should always be taken to clean acid-based spills as quickly as possible. We would advise using coasters and mats to help prevent direct contact with the stone's surface,' he recommends.

'Another great advantage of open shelves is the optical illusion they provide,' says Shaffer. 'They are great for letting those specific and handpicked decor pieces breathe. The overall effect should be cohesive yet simple. Embrace minimalism by leaving some areas sparsely adorned, allowing both decorated and empty spaces to stand out.'

What do the different food processor accessories do? These days, it's a reasonable question to ask. Even basic food processors come with a whole host of discs, blades, and miscellaneous attachments. Knowing how to use them will ensure you're getting the most from your appliances.

As H&G's kitchen appliance expert, I've tested plenty of the food processors on the market. In our tests, it's my job to make sure that every accessory provided is useful, so I've seen them all: discs, blades, pitchers, choppers, cups, juicers, and more.

I'll tell you exactly what the most common food processor accessories can do and how to use them. I'll also let you know about some alternatives that you can buy, such as food processor blender combos, so that you know you're making the most of your kitchen appliances.

The main knife or 'S' blade

This is the classic attachment. Every food processor comes with one, whether you choose one which costs $30 or $300. The knife blade, often called the 'S' blade is super sharp and double-sided. It's made to pulse, puree, and slice through your food. If you're making soups, sauces, dips, dressings, and batters, this is the one you'll use. 

If you're au fait with your food processor's functions, the S blade can also be really useful for making an easy shortcrust pastry, cauliflower rice, or some falafels. You'll need to pulse carefully, in shorter, sharper bursts, so that you don't overheat or overchop your ingredients.

The slicing disc

I only started using my slicing discs in the last few years and I wish I had started sooner. Whether you want thinly sliced radishes for a pickle, some cucumber crescents for a salad, or you want some substantial potato layers in your dauphinoise, the slicing disc will give you quick, consistent results. 

Most food processors come with multiple slicing discs, so yours will be able to achieve different thicknesses. However, even a standard, one-size-fits-all disc will save you hours in the kitchen. Plus, if you're clumsy like me, it's good to put some distance between your fingers and freshly sharpened knives.

The grating disc

This is another incredibly useful disk to use on your food processor. I don't know about you, but I get bored manually grating red cabbage for a summer salad, carrots for a cake, or large quantities of cheese. With the help of a grating disc, you can have all of your grating jobs done in seconds.

Whilst you've got the disc out, I'd recommend grating more than you need. Then, if it's cheese or a similarly freezer-friendly foodstuff, you can preserve it in your freezer drawers, whipping out your pre-grated food as and when you need it.

The dough blade

It might sound far-fetched and much more like the job of a stand mixer, but food processors really can make dough. If you have a dough blade, you can knead enriched bread dough, pizza dough, and thicker bakes using the short, blunt blade. 

It's quicker than hand-working the dough on your kitchen surface and it can save you a lot of mess too. I've heard some people using their regular S blade for making breads and batters, because the blades tend to be longer, reaching right to the edge of your bowl. However, this can also be tough on your mix, so always sense-check yourself.

Blending cups and pitchers

Most of those attachments will come with any standard food processor. However, if you want to expand what you can make with a food processor, you might want to take a look at the best food processor blender combos. These will either come with bullet blending cups that can sit on the base of your food processor, or the brand will send a big pitcher. Choosing between the two is really all about capacity: blending cups are great for single-serve smoothies and simple tasks. KitchenAid is a great example because you can use their stand mixer base for your food processor, but there are also a range of KitchenAid attachments that transform it into an ice cream maker, meat grinder, and a pasta roller. 

You name it, there'll be an attachment for it. And, manufacturers are only getting smarter. So, if you want to make the most of your food processor, it's worth doing some research to make sure that you're getting the most for your money.

If you want to know how to clean a food processor thoroughly and easily, you're in the right place. I spend my days testing these appliances on oily, tough, sticky, and strong-smelling ingredients, so I've worked out a simple technique for cleaning.

Luckily, many of the best food processors come with dishwasher-safe parts, so you can load them in and set a rinse running, However, if you don't have space for big food processing bowls, fiddly grating and slicing discs, and sharp blades, you'll want to know how to clean each part.

How to clean a food processor

You'll want to take your food processor apart before you start any of the cleaning process. Unplug the machine, then remove the lid, blades or discs, and bowl from the base. You'll often need to twist and unlock the base to take it off the base.

Once you've separated the parts and set them aside, pick up a warm, damp microfiber cloth (available at Walmart) and give the food processor a wipe-down. You'll want to get any food or oily fingerprints off the controls. Then, use a dry cloth to wipe it dry.

Experts at KitchenAid recommend 'avoiding abrasive cleaners or scouring pads because these will damage your appliance. You also don't want to immerse the base of the food processor or the power cord in water or another liquid.'

When the base is sparkling clean, you can tackle the bowl, blades, discs, and lid. Keep these out of the sink and wash them one by one. If you fill a sink when you've got sharp blades and discs floating around, you risk accidentally cutting yourself. 

Fill the sink with warm, soapy water. I recommend using cleaning detergents, such as Ecover or Method and running warm water into the sink. Then, using a soft cloth or sponge, wash the work bowl and then the lid.

The blades and discs will need some more attention. There are two methods to follow. You can use a small cleaning brush to work into any small spaces, wiping off ingredients from the blades too. 

Alternatively, you can fit the food processor bowl back onto the base, and then fit the blades or discs in place. Millie Fender, one of our kitchen experts says to 'add some warm water and a drizzle of dish soap to your bowl. You only need a few drops otherwise when you set the food processor running, it'll all bubble up and your bowl might become overfilled.'

Then, Millie says 'I always rinse my bowl fully to remove the bubbles, because I don't want the next dip I make to taste like soap! It's also a good way to check that you've cleaned the blades well.'

If you don't want to step near a sink and your food processor parts are dishwasher safe, you can give them a rinse, and then run a cycle on gentle or normal, with a soft dishwasher detergent. Always check your manual for what the brand recommends.

Once all the parts are clean, make sure that they're dry. I use a microfiber cloth since these are really effective at picking up every last drop of water. Then, reassemble the food processor and store it in your cabinet, shelf, or pantry. That's all there is to it.

Why is my food processor bowl discolored and what can I do?

Plastic bowls and pitchers can cling to bold colors and potent smells, whether you've been blending a green, garlic pesto or a bright curry paste. It's not something to worry yourself with. Try the cleaning steps, but make sure to soak the bowl in warm soapy water, overnight if possible, rather than doing a quick rinse and scrub. If that doesn't work, try mixing baking soda and water. This should help to give the inside of your bowl a deeper clean.

How do you clean the inside of a food processor handle?

Here are some of our tried and tested suggestions for different kitchen styles:

What sort of size and capacity do you need?

In the table above, I gave you a rough guideline for what sort of capacity and size to look for in a food processor. Large homes that need to make big batches of dips, sauces, smoothies, and nut butters, will need at least 11 cups of capacity. 

If you're a couple or small family, you'll probably want a 7-10 cup capacity. This will be enough to make hummus for you and any guests. There's a danger in sizing-up because the food processor blades won't do as thorough of a job if you've not got a very full food processor. The same applies for sizing down, in which case you're likely to have to run your chopping, dicing, slicing, and blending tasks in batches. 

The smallest food processors might also be called food choppers. These will have up to seven cups of capacity and will be great for single-person homes or couples. You'll be able to chop an onion, grate a carrot, and slice half a cucumber in these. They'll be useful extras to have, but don't count on them if you're squeezing all the extended family round for food.

Often, the footprint of your food processor is proportionate to capacity. Bigger models will require more space on your countertop. The bigger they get, the more important storage options will become. It's important to check that your extra accessories can be stored in the food processor bowl. You'll also want to measure your wall cupboards, if you have them, to make sure that your food processor clears them once the lid and feeding chute is fixed on. You can always pull it out further onto the countertop if you need to, but it's good to have options.

Which functions and features are important?

All basic food processors come with blades, which can chop, mix, and blend up your ingredients. However, as you pay more money, you'll get extras which increase the versatility of your food processor. Mid-range and premium food processors will have slicing and grating discs, so that you can shred cheese and carrots as well as cutting cucumber without getting your hands dirty. If you can see these features on a smaller food processor, make sure you check the chute size, since the smaller models might have narrow chutes which require some more vegetable prep before you can feed your foods into the bowl.

More versatile food processor and blender combos will come with blending pitchers, bullet blender attachments, and blending cups. This will mean that you have more clutter to store away, but, in the grand scheme of things, you'll be able to save space, since you've combined two appliances into one. Check the capacity and power of the blender to make sure that it can cater to your needs. 

Some food processors have special ice functions as well as pulse settings, speed settings, soup settings, and pre-sets for different kitchen tasks. These can be really useful, especially if they'll time how long your machine has been running for. However, bear in mind that you're paying a premium for a luxury rather than a necessary function.

What's good value and a reasonable warranty?

You can pick up an inexpensive food processor easily. The cheapest model that I've tested (and would still buy) is the Magic Bullet Kitchen Express. I actually recommend this all the time, because it's super speedy, really powerful, compact, and consistent. It's only $50 for the food processor with the blending attachments too. You can't go wrong if you're a small household.

At the other end of the spectrum, you've for the luxurious Vitamix food processor and the Ninja Professional Food Processor-Blender Combo. The Vitamix Gourmet SmartPrep Kitchen is $900 (currently reduced to $799.95 at QVC). You get a blender, food processor attachment, and plenty of different discs for various functions. It's a beautiful and powerful appliance, but you pay a premium for the prestigious brand name.

Somewhere in the middle of the two is the Ninja 3-in-1 Food Processor, which is $200. I love it because you get a full-sized food processor and blender, as well as smaller blending cups. It's powerful, sleek, and exceptional value. The only people I wouldn't recommend it to are those in smaller homes.

If you don't have both appliances or think you need to upgrade the quality of your food processor and your blender, I would recommend buying a blender and food processor combo. They'll save you space and money, so it's really a no-brainer. The only downside is, you won't get to select specific functions for both. The size of toaster that you'll need falls into two categories: dimensions and slots. Knowing what the dimensions of your toaster should be is straightforward. I'd recommend measuring the height, depth, and width of the countertop or cupboard that you plan on keeping your toaster in. You need to make sure that there's enough clearance for toast to pop up without obstruction. Plus, you don't want any cabinets or shelves above it, since these can be a fire hazard. 

Your toaster should generally only come out by about 1/3 onto the countertop. That way it won't be too obtrusive in the space of the whole kitchen. Even if it's a beautiful toaster, you won't want it to dominate.

Slot wise, you generally get to choose between two or four slice toasters. If you have a large household or you're often hosting, you'll want a four-slice toaster. Two slice toasters are great for smaller kitchens, because they're usually around 11 x 7 inches big. Four slice toasters typically measure around 14 x 9 inches, so they're more versatile, but also more demanding space-wise. 

 For those who also enjoy artisanal or homemade bread, it's worth looking for four-slice toasters that are made up of two long slots rather than four normal-sized ones. This will mean that you can fit long slices of sourdough into them without needing to cut them in half. We'd always recommend making sure that the slots are long and wide enough to fit your favorite bread in.

What functions and settings are essential?

Basic toasters should have at least a toast and defrost setting. This allows you to toast simple slices of bread, both fresh and from the freezer. Lots of basic models also offer a bagel setting which can toast the cut side of the bagel whilst warming the outside. 

If you like a more advanced and technical toaster, you might want to look for pre-sets, which will toast your bread to different levels depending on whether it's an enriched dough sourdough, pop tart, or seeded, brown bread. These settings might also let you control how brown or crispy your toast ends up. The best toasters will give you a countdown to when your toast is ready, so that you know whether you've got time to tackle other tasks in the kitchen before your toast pops up.

You should also get a reheat and a cancel button, which allows you to control and stop your toasting when you notice that it looks brown. Some smarter toasters offer a high-lift lever that allows you to safely check the toast levels of your bread without finishing the toasting timer cycle. It'll also help you to easily lift smaller items such as English muffins and short pieces of bread out of the toaster without burning your fingers. If that's never something that's relevant to you, there's no point in spending more money on features that you won't use.

Modern toasters have automatic lift and lower functions, so that all you have to do is press a button and the toaster will do the rest for you. This might sound lavish, but just wait until you deep dive into smart toasters. You can get touchscreen models with apps and WiFi connectivity, which act like smartphones giving you technical controls, including customizable settings, over your bread.

What is a good energy usage for a toaster?

Toasters are generally pretty efficient appliances. A toaster that is around 800-1,000 Watts will generally be considered energy efficient. It's worth looking for certifications, such as Energy Stars which will give you an indicator that your toaster is ultra-energy efficient. 

If you're conscious of your consumption, it's a good idea to unplug your toaster when it's not in use. These can consume power when they're on standby, so if you need to reduce your utilities, make sure it's not draining energy when it's not in use. It's also important to only toast what you need. If you overfill it, your toaster will become less efficient, requiring more energy to produce standard results.

Do you need any extra accessories

Premium toasters might come with some extra accessories. Whilst these aren't essentials, they might make your toaster more versatile. For example, if you have toast tongs and a sandwich press, you can make toasties without too much mess. You might also get a wire rack, especially with a four-slice toaster, which will help you put baked foods, such as pastries and croissants into your toaster.

How much money should you spend on a toaster?

There's no fixed price that you should spend on a toaster, I say this as someone who has spent more money than she would have liked to on hers (although I don't have any regrets). If you want a basic toaster with simple functions, you can get away with spending $30. However, be prepared to compromise on warranty, functions, design, and durability.

Mid-range toasters will cost up to $100, offering some more advanced features, a reasonable build quality, a longer warranty period (a few years), and more versatility. If you up your budget a little more, you'll be spending up to $200, but you'll get an Energy Star certification, ten (or more) year warranty, sleek design, and digital displays and timers.

If you need to work out how much to spend, think about how often you'll use it, the interior design of your kitchen, which features you really need, and which brand you're buying from. I bought a KitchenAid ProLine toaster because I already have a KitchenAid kettle and wanted mine to match. I spent a little more money on the auto-lowering function and capacity, but as someone who bakes their own bread, it's worth every penny.

French presses are best known for coffee, but if you drink loose leaf tea, you’re in luck: French press tea is a true treat. 

I’ve tested the best French presses on the market. You’d be surprised at the range of alternative uses there are for a French press — juicing, oil infusions, sangria, and more. In my opinion, tea is one of the best. I spoke with tea experts and coffee connoisseurs to find out everything you need to know about French press tea, including whether it’s better than a tea press. 

How to make French press tea

Making French press tea is as easy as making cafetiere coffee. All you need is quality loose-leaf tea (I recommend Teapigs for the best), a good French press, and a temperature-variable kettle.

Kayla Stavridis, a former barista, says 'start by adding hot water to your French press. This will warm it up, ensuring you maintain temperature during your brewing process. It will extract a maximal amount of flavors, more evenly.'

Once you've emptied that water out of your French press, measure out your loose-leaf tea. Kayla recommends using one teaspoon per every eight ounces of water. However, you can vary the quantities depending on the type of tea you're using and the way you like yours brewed. 

Pour water, heated to 195 degrees over your tea. Check that this is appropriate for your tea leaves: black tea will need your water to be boiling and green tea will need it to be much cooler. Johny Morrisson, former barista and coffee blogger says 'For delicate teas like white or green, stick to lower temperatures around 175-185°F and shorter steeps of 1-2 minutes. For black teas use hotter water close to 210°F and steep for up to 3 minutes.' The best way to control how much you heat your water is with a temperature-variable kettle. I love the Fellow Stagg Gooseneck Kettle, available at Williams Sonoma.

Let your tea steep for three to five minutes, again, the exact timing will depend on your tastes as well as the type of tea that you're brewing. Once the tea has steeped, press the plunger down and serve your tea up immediately.

French press recommendations

French press vs tea presses and infusers

A tea infuser or a tea press is designed specifically for making tea, so if you're looking for a brewer that you will only use for tea, you're better off with a specialist product. However, if you need something a little more versatile, you'll be looking at a French press. 

Using a French press to make tea comes with a lot of advantages. Kayla says that 'while a tea press might be designed with tea-specific features, such as finer filters, it does essentially the same job as a French press. If you need to minimize clutter, combine the two by investing in a French press.'

A French press can extract the flavors from tea really well, as long as you don't mind having a bit more sediment. Moreover, these coffee makers are incredibly versatile. I've covered all the alternative uses for a French press, from oil infusion and juicing in another article. This means you can have a tea brewer that works hard for the amount of space that it takes up.

Metallic details can often be found in bathrooms in the form of shiny spouts or towel rings, but incorporating sleek finishes into tiling is a unique way to create dimension and visual interest.

'Tiles are often one of the first things you notice when you enter a bathroom, so it is important to think carefully as to how to make them count,' Wilson explains. 'The ongoing trend for luxe metals means there are some eye-catching tile designs available.'

One important consideration to make when utilizing mirrored or metallic tiles is to factor in bathroom lighting. 

'If you do decide to add metallic tiles, our recommendation is to play to the material’s strength by adding backlighting or down lighting to make the most of the glamour it affords,' she suggests.

Normally, when I think of plaid and gingham decor, I think of an Ivy League student in the 1900s in a Burberry scarf: It’s a little stuffy, tired, and, dare I say it… boring. Most plaid decor back then consisted of very dark colorways and simple designs, so they weren’t really dramatic looks, and they absolutely wouldn’t suit contemporary design styles.

‘Plaid offers a pattern that can sway masculine or feminine; rustic or stately; and an array of color palettes from neutral to vibrant,’ says interior designer Leslie Murchie Cascino, owner of Michigan-based design firm Bonnie Wu Design. ‘They can be used in traditional or modern settings, and depending on the weave and material of the fabric, a plaid could be rendered casual or formal. Plaid comes in so many forms, so its versatility makes it an attractive pattern to use in design.’

The best part is, depending on your own style and the plaid variation you’ve chosen, you can make a huge statement in your home or go the more subtle route. Play with a gingham pillow on an all-white sofa for a pop, or use a whole series of plaid chairs in your living room in a neutral color scheme for it to blend in. No matter your personal preferences, there’s a plaid option out there for you, and I’ve scoured through several hundreds to find you my personal favorites.

The best plaid decor that's far from bland

The return of plaid and gingham decor proves that preppy is back, but it’s been elevated to suit the modern home. Incorporating new spring color ideas and unexpected shapes, these plaid designs are contemporary and fun. Consider adding gingham decor to one of your spring decor ideas.

There is perhaps no more obvious sign of an early spring than buds beginning to bloom. As we emerge from winter (and, with it, the cozy corners of our homes), it's time to bring some of the outside indoors with beautiful bouquets.

Ina Garten, cook, author, and decor queen extraordinaire, recently posted an image of her cool marble kitchen counter, accented with a glass vase full of orange tulips. As one of the ultimate flowers of the season, we're taking this photo as a sign to style our own countertop fleurs. 

A natural beauty, tulips (and flower bouquets in general) are an amazing way to decorate a space for spring. The caveat of flower accessories is keeping them thriving so that they can be enjoyed for a maximum period of time. The first step in keeping flowers fresh is ensuring their vessel is clean.

'Vases with narrow openings are typically harder to clean and are prone to trapping bacteria, which can contaminate the water and cause flowers to age and decompose quicker, so aim to use a vase with a wide opening if possible,' says Julian de Bosdari, CEO of plant nursery Ashridge.

Julian also recommends avoiding porous plastic vases, which can harbor bacteria. 'Glass and ceramic vases make for better options, as they are not only easier to clean but will also elevate the look of your bouquet,' he says.

Flower variety is also a considerable factor; while tulips like Ina's are stunning, Julian says they typically last about five days.

'Chrysanthemums, carnations, and orchids are more durable varieties that can survive for several weeks and enable your loved one to enjoy their bouquet for longer,' he says.

As far as care goes, trimming stems is a crucial step to ensuring that flowers remain healthy and continue to grow.

'Cut flower bouquets have their stems pre-cut, but they are likely to have closed up by the time you purchase them,' Julian explains. 'Therefore, it's important to trim half an inch off each stem at a 45-degree angle using a clean knife or pair of sharp scissors before setting your flowers in a vase.' 

Julian recommends trimming the stems every couple of days to maximize water absorption.

Lastly, if flowers are being stored in a kitchen, make sure to keep them away from two major wilting culprits: sunlight and fruit.

'It’s best to place your flowers in a cooler environment with plenty of indirect light rather than directly within the sun’s rays or near a radiator,' Julian says. 'Make sure to also keep flowers away from the fruit bowl, as ripening fruit such as bananas and apples produce an odorless gas called ethylene, which causes flowers to age and drop petals more quickly.'

The functionality of a kitchen island (arguably the most sought-after modern home must-have) is no secret. Described as a 'perennial favorite' by designers, this feature is as practical as it is good-looking – but how can we accentuate its beauty (and durability) further? The answer is found in Kylie and Jason Kelce's kitchen. 

The Philadelphia Eagles center and his wife Kylie topped their kitchen island with veined marble, one of the most luxurious materials of all, and it's a choice that makes a powerful statement in their otherwise all-white ktichen. 

Alongside their island, the couple used the marble on their countertops – adding just the right amount of interest to their neutral space. It's a choice that hasn't gone unnoticed by designers, including Tom Howley, who reassures that marble islands are a timeless choice.

'Kitchen islands are a perennial favorite and tend to be highly sought out by potential buyers as they provide extra worktop, storage, and entertaining space,' he says.

As Tom suggests, installing an island is one way to create a more interesting and practical kitchen (while also appealing to potential buyers if we so wish). However, decorating with marble only makes this feature more attractive. 

Jonathan Stanley, the VP of marketing at Caesarstone, notes that, in a high-traffic area, durability, alongside beauty, is a must – making marble a worthy investment. 

'It’s essential to choose practical yet aesthetically pleasing materials that you’ll love for years to come. Invest in a reliable, hardwearing worktop, as kitchens are busy places, and the surface, more than any other part, really takes the brunt of this,' he explains. 

When installing statement marble, it's also important to consider our cabinetry color choices. In Kylie and Jason Kelce's kitchen, the subtle white cabinets allow the marble island and countertops to take center stage while allowing the space to breathe. Pairing a dramatic marble with brighter colors could overwhelm the kitchen, so if we're following suit, we should look toward similar hues for an airy, well-balanced space. 

'Lighter wood finishes and paint colors work well to expand the perceived space of your kitchen,' Tom adds. 'Pair light tones with light-colored countertops, and your kitchen will look spacious and airy.'

Jon Batiste wasn't technically involved with the Barbie soundtrack – but the award-winning composer has taken on one of the film's biggest trends within the walls of his home.

Designer Hallie Goodman posted a photo of Jon and partner Suleika Jaouad Batiste's kitchen, which is painted a soft hue of salmon pink. 'The pink kitchen cabinets (Farrow & Ball's Setting Plaster) evoke the color of antique plasters in a way that conjures New Orleans – which Jon understood intuitively,' she captioned the image.

Pink has been on everyone's lips (and walls) since last summer, but for those used to soft neutrals and lack of color in the home, it can feel like a big step to think pink. The idea is to ease in rather than dive headfirst – according to designers, subtlety is an option.

'If you fancy getting on board but think you're paler pink rather than something more fuchsia, look at shades that are soft ballet dress in color,' says interior designer Benji Lewis. Experts also say that pink is in fact the new black, in that it's just as versatile as any traditional home color.

'What was once a polarizing color amid a societal conversation about traditional gender roles, shades of pink have emerged as popular colors,' says Amber Shay, design director at Meritage Homes. 'A beige pink tone typically evokes comfort and warmth, which appeals to today's buyers who are spending more time at home. Beige pink is also a neutral color, with more personality and versatility than a traditional beige tone.'

While pink is often associated with youth and femininity, it can also fit into other more mature trends and rooms.

'Pink will always have a place in specific interior design styles such as traditional, beachy, eclectic, boho, and more, and I see it as having staying power as an accent color,' Amber says. 'I expect to see people using colors, like pink, in unexpected ways throughout their homes, like creating a statement island in the kitchen.'

While I’m well aware that there are several humans out there who absolutely love putting on their puffy jackets and knit hats, and going out into the freezing cold, I'm going to be honest here and tell you that I’m absolutely not one of them.

In fact, I absolutely despise the cold, which isn’t really helpful when you live in NYC and the weather is below freezing for about half the year. I like to also wrap myself up with a warm throw when I’m relaxing on the sofa, and cashmere is naturally my material of choice.

However, I have had huge issues when it comes to finding the best throw blanket to purchase this winter. Either they’ve been incredibly expensive, or they’ve been too light and flimsy to provide any warmth. Plus, it just has to be cashmere, as wool can get a bit too suffocating for me to purchase. However, I most recently managed to get my hands on this absolutely stunning cashmere throw from Williams-Sonoma, and it’s everything I’ve wanted and more.

What's the deal?

This European Solid Cashmere Throw from Williams-Sonoma is my absolute favorite find of the winter season. Made of 100 percent pure cashmere, it’s a 210-gram, lightweight, tightly-woven throw that comes in two sizes and 10 colors, so it’ll fit into any decor scheme.

The main draw of this throw, however, is its affordability for being pure cashmere: It’s only $299 for the smaller size, and while the larger size costs a bit more at $550, it’s absolutely massive, and will easily allow you to cozy up in it.

What's the design like?

This solid cashmere throw is available in 10 gorgeous colors—Oatmeal, Orange, Sangria, Navy, Light Grey, Ivory, Evergreen, Charcoal, Chambray Blue, and Blush—and two sizes. There’s a 50-inch by 65-inch option which is smaller, and works to cover only a part of your body. If you’re like me and want to wrap your entire self up in it, then I highly recommend getting the larger 72-inch by 80-inch size, since it’s absolutely perfect for covering your whole body on cold days and nights.

In terms of style and durability, I don’t think you can beat the Williams-Sonoma throw: It’s made entirely from 100 percent cashmere that’s been closely knitted for a tightly-woven feel, and has stylish fringed accents on either side. At only 210 grams in weight, it’s also incredibly light. However, if you like your throws to be on the heavier, sturdier side, this might not be the option for you.

How can you use it?

I personally like to wrap myself up entirely in this throw, but it can even work as a decorative accent piece across a sofa or in a bedroom. My sister also owns this throw (per my recommendation, of course), and she likes the smaller option over her comforter, as she says it helps keep her feet warm at night. 

Since it comes in such a variety of colors, you can try any combination of hues that will either add a pop or simply blend in with your surroundings. The larger size would also work really well in a guest bedroom, should your loved ones need some extra warmth when they visit.

Should you buy it?

If you’re like me and freeze often in colder weather, I think the Williams-Sonoma European Solid Cashmere Throw should absolutely be on your radar. It’s affordable, warm, and stylish, and the number of colors available means that it’ll very easily fit into pretty much any decor scheme. However, it can be too lightweight if you prefer heavier options, and it’s very warm, so those who run hot might want to stay away.

For me, however, it’s the perfect little luxury for chillier temps, and it’s a wonderful addition to my living room setup.

In the realm of celebrity homes, Drake's manor is something of a piece de resistance. Opulent and extravagant, the rapper and infamous Raptors fan's Toronto estate (dubbed 'The Embassy' spans 50,000 square feet and includes an NBA-size basketball court. 

While certain rooms in his property, such as his luxe master bedroom and exquisite entryway, have been well-document, a recent video posted by the home's designer, Ferris Rafauli, gives an inside look at new corners of the home, most notably, the lavish and atmospheric home bar, designed by Ferris Rafauli.

Champagne Papi's home bar is fully stocked with libations (and drink-making accessories), but what takes it to the next level is the deep purple mood lighting. 

'Wherever you set up a home bar, consider the lighting, which is key to creating an atmosphere in any room in the house,' says Clara Ewart, Head of Design at Kitesgrove. 'A small table lamp will help bring a club-like feel, or simply light a candle to bring it to life. '

The revival of the home bar came around the time of the pandemic when many were left to their own devices at home rather than their local watering holes. However, the home entertaining trend seems like it's here to stay due to its accessible yet mysterious aesthetic – and curated lighting, much like Drake's, is the key to sucsess. But what else do we need to know to follow suit?

'It doesn’t matter how much, or how little, space you have available, you can create a bar anywhere,' Simon Temprell, Interior Design Lead at Neptune, states. 'The design possibilities are endless, and you can choose from a large range of colors, work surfaces, and hardware.'

Though Drake's version of the home bar leans more into club territory, those with extra space and a penchant for mixed drinks can personalize a bar space to fit into their own home's style, whether that's minimalist and modern or vintage-inspired.

'Creating a home bar can be as simple as setting up a beautiful tray with a small selection of favorite bottles, glasses, and accessories,' Clara says. 

'This can be easily incorporated into an existing joinery unit or bookcase or simply placed on top of a kitchen worktop. Bar carts are a convenient and stylish addition to any quiet corner with the added benefit that they can be tucked away when not in use. Antique bar carts,, in particular,, will help to add character and personality to a space, creating an inviting ambiance when entertaining.'

In busy homes, only three things really matter for your toaster: capacity, reliability, and versatility. Breville’s Die Cast Toaster scores a home run on all three and still comes with other nice extras too. It ticks a lot of boxes for a lot of people, so our experts were keen to find out more.

I've been testing the best toasters for months and I had high hopes for the Four Slice Die Cast. I tested it across a range of breads, from basic white bread to artisan sourdough, fruit bread, gluten-free bread, as well as pop tarts.

Generally, I was pretty impressed with most of the Die Cast's features. Whilst I think the 'Smart' tag in the name is a bit of a stretch and it wasn't the most consistent, it comes with luxurious (or unnecessary) quirks too. There’s a lot to love, but a little to learn.

Breville does a great job of recyclable packaging. This came in cardboard, packed with some more cardboard, and then a little bit more cardboard too. There was some plastic protecting the aluminum outside, but not a huge amount. 

On the countertop, this looks bigger than lots of other toasters, but the design won't dominate your space. Plus, this is a four-slice model, so the dimensions are going to be bigger anyways. The slots looked nice and wide, perfect for big chunks of bread and the overall aesthetic looked sleek. If you have aluminium or stainless steel in your home already, this would fit right in.

Who would it suit?

The sheer capacity and versatility of the Breville makes it perfect for large homes. You can warm two pop tarts for kids on a more delicate setting at the same time you toast two slices of sourdough at a fiercer setting. Plus, you’ll hardly have to do a thing: there’s an auto lift and auto lower function integrated to help those who always have their hands full when it’s time to toast.

The buttons along the top of the toaster look like a lot to learn, but they're just duplicated, because they control apply to two of the slots each. It looks like quite an overwhelming selection at first, but once you're used to it, you can easily toast a wide selection of breads. 

What is it like to use?

As I just mentioned, the long row of buttons actually makes this look more complex than it is. The slots work two at a time, so they're effectively like two separate toasters which have been welded together. There's no way to set all four running at the same time, but you can get pretty close: you just press one button and then the next.

Once I had figured out the controls, I ran the toaster through empty, as you always should. Sometimes, this will create a plastic smell, but this didn't happen for the Breville.

Test 1: White bread

White bread is a good test of any basic toaster. It felt close to criminal placing super-cheap, sliced bread in a toaster this premium. Nevertheless, I slotted my slice in, and set the timer for two minutes. The Breville auto-lowered and clamped my toast into place for exactly two minutes. 

At one minute and thirty seconds, I tested out the 'Lift & Look' function, which almost lifted the whole slice out of the toaster. The toast (or bread at this point) was really pale, so I wasn't sure how it would turn out at the two minute mark. You can see from the picture that ended up looking pretty pale. 

I put the slice back into the toaster and pressed the 'A Bit More' button, which adds thirty seconds to the timer. I ended up pressing that twice, so the image above is the results of three minutes' toasting. That's quite long for such a simple piece of toast and that was reflected in the flavors. The white slice tasted dry and crumbly.

I think the Breville was just warming up, because I tried the same again at the end of the tests and my toast was golden in one and a half minutes. The color was still not distributed evenly, but it looked a lot better than my first attempt. 

I also had similar results trying the same white bread from frozen, using the frozen setting. It was warmed through, not too dry, and a deep golden color. The Breville really warms up as you use it, so you'll need to be prepared to experiment a little.

Test 2: Sourdough

The white bread set a precedent for under-toasting. I tried a long slice of sourdough, but the short slots couldn't fit it in unless I halved the slice. This is pretty standard, but there are a few toasters (such as the Smeg Four Slice toaster, available at QVC) on offer with longer slots if that's a deal-breaker for you.

I gave the sourdough three minutes, thinking it would probably be underdone. It came as no surprise that this was very pale when the toaster lifted my sourdough at exactly three minutes into toasting. 

I gave it another two minutes, so it had now had five minutes in total. At this point, the top crust of the sourdough was well done, whilst the base of my slice was a little pale. I didn't want to burn the top, so took it out and put butter on it. Taste wise, this was warm, crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, so the Breville had done a relatively good job. I would have just liked more consistency and a shorter toasting time.

Test 3: Bagel

The bagel setting is one of Breville's dedicated buttons, so I was hopeful that this would be a success. I gave this a standard two minutes to toast, which is how long most models take. However, when the Breville lifted my bagel out (at exactly two minutes) it was way overdone. You can see in my picture above that it was too burnt to eat. I cut it in half and, interestingly, it was still doughy in the middle. If there's a silver lining, it was the doughy center. It's an indicator that this can be good toaster for bagels, but be careful with your timings.

I tried giving a different bagel just one minute on the bagel setting and I thought it was almost overdone again, although I like my toast quite light. There was a good, golden crunch to the cut side of the bagel, without the outside becoming too leathery on the outside. The doughy middle was still soft too, so once you know to expect an uncharacteristically fierce performance on the bagel setting, this can do a good job.

Test 4: gluten-free bread

There are few baked goods as tricky to test as gluten-free bread. I put my slice in for two minutes, on the standard setting. When it auto-lifted on the two minute mark, it needed a bit more more — and then a bit more, and then a bit more. 

The end results were pretty gross: the bread was dried out and tough to eat. The gluten-free bread was my second slice in the toaster after turning it on, so I think it hadn't heated up to its full, fierce power yet. If you are putting gluten-free bread into a cold Breville toaster, opt for three or four minutes, rather than repeating 'a bit more', because that's where you sacrifice on texture.

Test 5: Fruit bread

I won't sugar-coat it: this was a disaster. The bagel button is also the fruit bread setting, but you need to double-press this to access the alternative setting. I didn't realise this and gave my fruit bread one minute on the bagel setting. It came out as bread on one side and completely cremated on the other. You can see in my picture, that it's a stark contrast.

Once I had established how to switch between settings (you can tell because the lights turn blue), I put my fruit bread in on the specific setting. After one minute, I was keen to take it out, given my previous experience with the Breville, but it was too light. I gave it the full 130 seconds as recommended and, no surprises, it turned out overdone. 

On my third piece of fruit bread, I used the proper setting, gave it a minute and a half, and it was good. If I gave it more time, it was likely to be overdone, so I settled for lightly golden toast. It was well-warmed, lightly crunchy, and fluffy on the inside. It's the story of this toaster in miniature. It can make excellent toast, but there's a learning curve that you shouldn't need for such a basic appliance.

test 6: Pop tart

I used the gentle fruit bread setting on my pop tart, because I didn't quite know where I stood with the Breville at this stage. It was warm after one minute, but I gave the pop tart 'a bit more' from the settings menu and took it out after that final thirty second blast. The icing was still neatly intact, whilst all the insides were gooey and crumbly. This was the greatest success I had with the Breville, so I was really pleased.

Cleaning, storage, and maintenance

Breville has thought about everything when it comes to cleaning and storage. The crumb tray is easy to remove from the base; the auto-lift comes up high enough to stop small crusts from festering at the bottom of the slots; and the finish on the Breville is finger-print resistant. I had buttery fingers and didn't leave a mark. If you don't like cleaning toasters, it's a low-maintenance option.

Storage-wise, although this is big, it cuts a pretty sleek silhouette. There's also a neat cord storage part at the bottom, which will stop your countertops from getting all cluttered with wires. I'd recommend buying this only if you have the countertop capacity to keep it on show. It's probably a bit too big and too much hassle to take in and out of a cupboard, especially because this took a long time to cool down.

How does it rate online?

There aren't a lot of reviews dedicated to the Breville Four Slice Smart Toaster; most people talk about the alternative Breville Die Cast Two Slice, available at Amazon . However, from the few reviews I found, this turned out to be a popular option. People were impressed that, across four slots, all the pieces of toast would lift up evenly toasted (compared to each other). Lots of reviewers enjoyed having a cycle countdown indicator and a reasonable range of buttons for their toasting functions. Another popular feature was the auto-lift and lowering, which sounds excessive, but even I (a gimmick cynic) found it useful. When you're busy in the kitchen, it's one less thing to think about.

Criticisms were generally around the buttons. People felt that they looked more complicated than they needed to be. Whilst being able to toast on two independent settings was incredibly useful for some, others just wanted a way to set all four slots running together, in synchronisation.

People noticed that this heats up quickly and takes a while to cool. That explains why I wouldn't recommend storing it in a cupboard and why my toasting times got shorter and shorter as I worked through our breads.

How does it compare?

I've tested my fair share of toasters and have a lot of thoughts about where Breville Die Cast 4-Slice Toaster sits in the rankings. As far as four slice toasters go, this has the best range of settings. Not many bigger toasters have a bagel function and they certainly don't have the auto lowering and lifting (which so many people love). However, Breville doesn't make their four slot toaster from two long slots. This meant that, models such as the Smeg Four Slot Toaster, available at QVC could effortlessly fit a long sourdough slice in (see image above), the Breville could not. I had to halve my lovely, long artisanal slice in order to fit it in. 

Whilst the Smeg doesn't have the luxury of the auto-lift, it was much more consistent at toasting different breads, so was easier to use. If you eat a lot of artisanal breads and you need capacity, I think I'd be tempted to go for the Smeg, even though it means sacrificing on Breville's special bagel function. 

If you don't need capacity, but like the sound of a smarter toaster, you need to check out Breville's The Toast Select Luxe, available at QVC. This shares a similar aesthetic to the Breville Four Slice Die Cast, with a sleek, aluminium finish, but has more settings (including whole grain, rye, and waffle), whilst delivering much more consistent results. The only drawback with The Toast Select is that you're unlikely to save any money. Even though it's half the size, it's still the same price. However, if you prize aesthetics and performance, this is a competitive option.

Should you buy it?

The Breville Die Cast 4-Slice Toaster is great if you need capacity in the mornings. Having the ability to isolate two slots and run different settings at the same time can be priceless for some families. Plus, after using the handy auto-lift function for a while, I came to resent manual lift toasters (first world problems, I know). However, if you'll be using this to make lots (more than eight slices) of toast, you'll need to keep an eye on timings, because it's inconsistent when you haven't used it for a few hours.

According to professional chefs, these are the five kitchen items you need to upgrade the next time you have the opportunity. 

Kitchen items you need to upgrade

If you want to update your kitchen without replacing it, changing out the small things matters and is often more than worth the upfront cost in the long run. 

1. Knives

'Investing in the best kitchen knives does more than make cutting vegetables and preparing dinner easier. It can also make you safer in the kitchen too,' begins Tiffany Swan, professional chef, food scientist, and owner of Tiffany Sage San: 

‘When your knife is sharp, it cuts through the product with ease, so you don't have to work as hard. When you work hard on cutting, and your knife isn't sharp, it tends to slide, but you still have a lot of pressure behind that knife, so the risk of hurting yourself is greater. 

‘Did you know that cutting through a carrot takes the same amount of force as cutting through a finger? Gross, I know, but that visual is well worth keeping knives sharp so you don't have to risk it.'

A new set of chef’s knives doesn't have to set you back a small fortune to be effective, either, Tiffany adds. All you need is for them to be sharp and feel comfortable in your hand. 

‘A great way to keep them in great shape is to wash them by hand and never put them in the dishwasher. The harsh temperatures, chemicals, and pressure of a dishwasher are not a friend of sharp edges. Similarly, investing in professional knife sharpening once a year or so will keep your knives sharp, but using a home sharpening tool (not just honing steel) will be useful in between professional sharpenings. 

‘As a professional chef, I sharpen my knives about once a week, but then send them off for a professional sharpening once a year.’

2. Cutting boards

'Even if you learn how to care for a wooden cutting board properly, your chopping blocks still need replacing every few years to maintain food safety – not to mention if they are plastic,' urges Jessica Decker, professional organizer and owner of Become Organized.

‘If you’re using plastic cutting boards, stop immediately!’ she warns. ‘Have you ever seen knife marks in a plastic cutting board and wondered where the little plastic shards have gone? Chances are, they’ve gone directly into the food you’re preparing. Switch plastic cutting boards out for wooden or bamboo.’

3. Kitchen scales

'Old analog kitchen scales and measuring cups are useful, but they are not as good as a good digital set,' says Tiffany Swan, a professional chef. This simple investment not only makes cooking easier but can also improve food – it even helps with meal prep. 

‘For one, you can get a much greater level of accuracy in your measurements if you are doing them by weight rather than by volume in a measuring cup. Baking is all about scientific formulas, so it is important to be as accurate as possible. But my favorite bonus is that you have far fewer utensils to wash: instead of measuring the honey into the measuring cup and then scraping it out with a spatula, you can pour it directly into the appropriate bowl.

‘I like gram scales that measure out to the tenth of a gram and have a capacity of at least five kilograms, so you can easily put your bowl filled with flour on the scale.’

4. Cookware

It should be obvious, but the higher the quality of your pans, the easier they are to use and clean – not to mention the healthier they are, as you are not using tonnes of oil to stop sticking or risking non-stick coatings from peeling. 

Lauren Allen, cookbook author and founder of Tastes Better From Scratch, recommends upgrading your sets to either high-end stainless steel or enamel cookware, such as the best Le Creuset. This allows for better even heating and temperature control when cooking.

‘This can help prevent hot spots that lead to burning,' she explains. 'Quality pans often last much longer as well, saving money over time.’

5. Food processor and blender

Any kitchen appliance that speeds up or simplifies a process is worth the investment, especially if nothing else does the job quite the same. For our professional chefs, this means investing in quality food processors and blenders. 

‘A good food processor quickly chops, slices, shreds and mixes, cutting meal prep times significantly,’ begins Lauren Allen, cookbook author. ‘Models with higher wattage motors easily power through dense items. The wide feed tube accommodates most ingredients without pre-cutting.’

Tiffany Swan, professional chef, adds that: ‘Dressings, pesto, smoothies, creamy soups, hummus, and more are made so much easier with a great blender. Invest in the industry standard Vitamix (refurbished can often save money, but still provide a great quality blender) and treat it like your knives. Wash the blade at the bottom of the jar by hand and send it off to be sharpened every now and again. 

‘There are some things that just can't be made in a sub-par blender. Have you ever had a smoothie you had to chew? I have, and it isn't worth it!’

The best time to check which kitchen items may be on their last legs is when cooking or organizing your kitchen utensils. Take stock of what you don't use and what you use a lot, decluttering and replacing the items that are either dusty or have been loved to death.

How to make sheets and upholstery smell like Christmas

When it comes to making sheets and upholstery smell like Christmas, the key is to use fragrances reminiscent of the season – safe bets include cinnamon, clove, pine, and orange. 

1. Create a Christmas spray

Instead of relying on store-bought air fresheners, why not create your own Christmas-scented spray? This way you can create a scent that is personalized to your preferences to infuse into your sheets and upholstery. 

Asad Shamim, CEO of Furniture in Fashion explains how to make fabric spray: 'Add a few drops of your favorite Christmas-scented essential oils to a spray bottle filled with water. Then, shake the bottle well and spray it on your sheets and upholstery. 

'Be sure to test the essential oil on an inconspicuous area first to make sure it doesn't stain.'

As a general guideline, a good oil-to-water ratio would be 3 oz. of water to 20 drops of essential oils. You can experiment with combinations to find a blend that works for you. We recommend this winter essential oils set, from Walmart. 

Alternatively, you can create a homemade room spray with herb-infused water. 'This method offers a more subtle aroma,' explains Inez Stanway, founder of craft website Monday Mandala. 'These simple sprays can be made by boiling water with rosemary, cloves, or other herbs, then cooling and transferring into a spray bottle.' 

2. Scented sachets

A simple and effective way to make your sheets and upholstery smell like Christmas is by creating scented sachets using natural materials and essential oils. Place these scented sachets in your linen closet to infuse the space with a holiday aroma, or between couch cushions and within bedding to gradually release comforting scents synonymous with Christmas.

Combine a blend of fragrant materials, such as herbs like rosemary and sage, Christmas tree trimmings, cinnamon sticks, dried orange slices, and cloves. Place these into a sachet. 

You can find muslin sachets at Amazon, and if you don't have the ingredients in your home, you can also purchase a pack of holiday potpourri at Amazon. If your store-bought Christmas potpourri needs an aroma boost, add a few drops of essential oils to strengthen the scent.

3. Baking soda freshener

Using baking soda combined with fragrances is always a great way to infuse scents into your fabrics, such as with baking soda lavender rug fresheners. This is because baking soda is a natural deodorizer and can be used with natural fragrances or essential oils to add a pleasant scent to your upholstery and sheets. 

'Mix baking soda with a few drops of your chosen Christmas-themed essential oils. Sprinkle it lightly over the upholstery and sheets, let it sit for an hour, and then vacuum it off,' advises Georgina Ross, interior designer, and founder of Simply Tablecloths. 'This not only adds fragrance but also helps in deodorizing the fabric.' 

4. Add festive scents to laundry

Interior designers share how they create an English cottage style

'The English cottage style is a charming and cozy aesthetic, drawing on inspiration from quaint cottages found in rural Britain. Leaning into rustic finishes and natural elements, such as exposed wood, stone fireplaces and soft furnishings made from linen, country decorating ideas and English cottagecore interiors resemble a lived-in, storybook feel,' says Jessica Hanley, founder of Piglet in Bed.

1. Embrace a characterful mix of patterns and prints

One of the easiest ways you can bring a dose of English cottage charm into your interior space is by decorating with pattern. 

From decorating with stripes and decorating with gingham to embracing patterns and prints designs from iconic British designers, such as William Morris, and institutions such as Liberty London, these designs can be used across wallpaper ideas, furniture, soft furnishings and even through artwork and accessories.

'Years ago when cottages were built in the countryside, homeowners used wood from the surrounding area to build furniture. While I love painted furniture and have it all throughout my home, I try to incorporate a lot of natural wooden pieces as well for that English country cottage look,' says home decorating expert, Andrea Francavilla.

We adore the use of natural materials in this cottage kitchen, designed by British Standard. From the mix of wood finishes used across the kitchen cabinets, wall paneling and dining furniture, to the traditional terracotta tiles on the floor, the result establishes a wonderfully rustic look – but with a charming, colorful edge.

'A cottage bathroom should evoke feelings of warmth and comfort. Look for materials that defuse light and create a relaxing ambiance,' says Emma Joyce, brand manager at Victoria + Albert Baths. 'When choosing your bathroom fixtures and fittings, matt is preferable to gloss, creating a surface that feels warm to the touch and gentle on the skin. A traditional roll-top bath with clawed feet for your bathtub ideas is an obvious choice, but more contemporary designs that have natural, organic shapes will also work perfectly.'

As well as making your bathroom cozy, your chosen bathroom tile ideas can have a big impact on the overall style of your space, as designer, Petra Palumbo explains. 

'Originally found in grand 18th and 19th century English houses, the resurgence of Delft tiles is yet another example of the country house aesthetic finding its place in today’s homes. Tapping into the new mood for thoughtful, purpose-led designs with a nostalgic yet modern aesthetic, Delft tiles have a universal appeal, because anyone can apply the designs to their lives. Each combination of motif or illustration is entirely personal, and often deeply sentimental, reflecting the move towards characterful, individual interiors.'

4. Make the most of your fireplace

Fireplaces have provided natural focal points and warming areas to gather in homes for centuries, and no classic English cottage would be without a cozy armchair beside a traditional fireplace.

Interior designer, Courtney Wollersheim says, 'For an English country cottage look that overflows in quaintness, spend time on making the hearth a focal point in the room with a brick or white-washed stone surround, antique vintage fireplace accessories, a healthy mantel with vintage frames, and black and white photos.'

If you have a fireplace in your home, then be sure to make the most of this design feature, but if you are without, then of course, do not worry – you don't need to install a fireplace to nail the English country cottage look!

5. Style your space with hand-crafted, thoughtful decorations

'The charm and character found in antique items is hard to replicate, and English cottage style is almost impossible to achieve without decorating with vintage and decorating with antiques. One easy decorating idea that is so simple and affordable is to decorate with books. I love using vintage books throughout my decor, and the best place to find them is usually at thrift shops,' says Andrea Francavilla.

She continues, 'Showcasing collections of decorations can also work wonderfully for this style. If you have a beautiful set of bone china, vintage artwork, old books, or even antique breadboards, display them for all to see.'

6. Look to the beauty of the natural world for inspiration

At the heart of all county interiors is, you've guessed it, the beauty of the natural world and surrounding rural landscape. 

Creating an inviting and grounding indoor-outdoor feel through natural materials, earthy, warming color palettes, and patterns and prints that celebrate nature, is one of the most important parts of an English cottage style.

In short, Breville and Sage are sister brands, owned by the Breville Group Limited. If you're based in the US, you probably know Breville. If you're from the UK, Sage will be a much more familiar face.

What's the difference?

Founded in Sydney, Australia, in 1932, the Breville Group Limited owns both Sage and Breville. You're more likely to have seen or used Breville, because that's the brand that supplies nearly 70 countries around the world with appliances. 

Sage was created because a completely separate 'Breville' appliance brand already existed in the UK, so the Australian Breville had to re-brand. Paired with British chef, Heston Blumenthal, Sage entered the UK market and is now available in some European countries too.

Most of the Breville and Sage appliances are the identical, except for the name etched onto the front and power plug at the back. There are a few appliances which are exclusive to specific countries, but, for the most part, you can find an appliance made by the sister brand in whichever country you are buying from.

If you've been inside a kitchen of someone who cares about the quality of their cooking, it's highly likely you've been amongst Breville appliances. The brand has established themselves as manufacturers of the premium appliances, which can cater to even the most advanced users. 

The most likely place you'll see Breville machines is in a keen coffee connoisseur's coffee station. Breville makes some of the best coffee makers, espresso machines, and coffee grinders on the market. 

I'm a barista and I've spoken with a range of people, from other baristas to first-time speciality coffee makers, and Breville machines have close to universal appeal. They're simple and straightforward, but can get technical when you need them to.

Breville doesn't stop at coffee though. They make some of the best kettles, toasters, and blenders on the market too. Packed with their trademark, well-considered features, they're tough to beat. 

Who are Sage?

In the UK there is already another, completely separate, company called Breville which is part of Newell Brands. This meant that the Breville Group launched their appliances in the UK under a new name, Sage. They've since earnt the same reputation for high-quality appliances at almost affordable prices as Breville has in the US and Australia.
