Diane Keaton did just that with her 'barn-factory' kitchen idea, where industrial chic met farmhouse style. The soaring ceilings and galvanized metal accents of this space are part of her custom-built dream home in Sullivan Canyon, Los Angeles. After purchasing the plot for $4.7 million in 2011, Diane spent the next few years renovating and rebuilding the estate, inspired by thousands of images she found on Pinterest, documented in her 2017 book, The House That Pinterest Built (available on Amazon). She hand-selected 75,000 vintage Chicago bricks to build the earthquake-resistant, fireproof structure in which her rustic, industrial masterpiece came to life. Following her passing in late 2025, the property sold for $18 million.

'Characterful, stained wood is becoming a key element of kitchen design in 2027, particularly when paired with painted cabinetry, creating a two-tone aesthetic,' says Emily Newmarch, Design Consultant at Kitchens by Holloways.
Pairing this material with paint, as we see with Diane's gray cabinets, brings both elements to life because it echoes the natural world. 'A stained oak or walnut finish, especially for cabinet doors, offers a natural grain that adds subtle softness and texture to the kitchen, bringing the outdoors indoors,' Emily explains. 'When combined with painted cabinetry in a complementary colour, it gives a kitchen balance. This works particularly well when clients split the main kitchen cabinetry run and the island into two different materials or to highlight key features such as pantry spaces or open shelving where stained wood is added via smaller detailing.'
