Forget Minimalist Rugs – Kendall Jenner’s Red and Black Tiled Floor Reimagines 'The 6th Wall' for 2027

The floor is becoming the new canvas for statement decor next year, and the model's gorgeous art studio is setting the gold standard

From color capping to 'drenching,' 2026 design trends have been all about celebrating the 5th wall (also known as the ceiling). In 2027, the floor, or '6th wall,' is getting the same treatment. Our floors are becoming bolder, more colorful, and more textured.

Kendall Jenner tapped into the flooring trend in her Beverly Hills home before it was cool. Her Clements Design-designed art studio features matte tiled floors in cream, black, and red. It's a piece of art unto itself. Kendall's team made the statement floors the focus by keeping the rest of the room pared back, grounded by a white chaise lounge (like this wood-framed style from Wayfair) and tan curtains.

Her studio demonstrates just how impactful the impending trend of letting a tile idea speak for itself can be.

In the impending year, homeowners will follow Kendall's example of bringing interest to their floors not only through color, but through pattern.

Lizzie Mosley, Creative Director at Hug Rug explains: 'After printmaxxing took over the fashion world earlier this year, interiors are now following suit. Pattern-maxxing has taken over from the minimalism and quiet luxury of recent years as homeowners look instead to take risks with bolder design choices that reflect their personality and personal style. In 2027, we expect this to take on a heritage twist, combining pattern-maxxing’s eclecticism with the comforting nostalgia of traditional prints, from plaid and tartan to botanical florals and archival pattern.'

You can tap into this accent floors look with statement tiles like Kendall, or opt for a brightly patterned rug for a more renter-friendly option.

Recreate Kendall's Look at Home

Decorating around a statement floor requires a certain level of restraint. Kendall Jenner accomplishes this by decorating the rest of her art studio with white and wood decor, and these are our editors' favorite pieces for recreating her look.

The matte texture and hexagonal grouting is a huge part of what makes Kendall Jenner's studio floors so interesting, and in 2027, homeowners will follow suit. Rather than a focus on color, an obsession with the floor will lead to more focus on the texture of the floor.

'Color drenching is nothing new, but 2027 looks set to take the idea one step further with texture drenching,' states Alex Heslop, Trend Expert at Flooring Superstore. 'Instead of relying on a single statement surface to do all the work, this approach layers tactile finishes throughout a room, with flooring playing an important part in the overall scheme.'

He advises: 'The floor is a prime opportunity to add dimension to any space. Woodgrain finishes or stone-effect flooring can introduce subtle texture from the ground up, complemented by softer materials such as linen curtains, woven rugs and tactile upholstery. The key is to combine contrasting textures that add interest without competing with one another.'

However, this 2027 interior design trend isn't just about aesthetics. Richly patterned floors hide a multitude of sins, while adding interest to the room in a low effort way.

'In 2027, interiors are set to take a practical approach to style, with a focus on design that can elevate the home whilst making daily life easier,' says Lizze. 'From busy schedules to family life, having a home that works for you can have a huge impact. Flooring in particular should balance style with practicality, as it has to withstand the wear and tear of frequent foot traffic and dirt.'

Whether you opt to install tiles like Kendall Jenner, or just rethink your rug options, her art studio is a reminder that the 6th wall is one of the most impactful canvases for your design vision. In 2027, it will be the most important focus.
