Christmas gives us permission to be a little more extravagant with our decorating, embracing hues that might feel out of place for the rest of the year. Gold is perhaps the best example, and Sofía Vergara makes a particularly good case for going all in.

Her Christmas tree is anything but understated, standing tall beside warm wood shelving and French doors, with layers of gilded foliage, champagne baubles, and hundreds of lights.

What makes Sofía’s tree so beautiful is her decision to stick to a single color family. Gold, amber, and pale champagne run throughout, from the smallest ornaments (just like these champagne-toned pieces from Amazon) to the larger decorative pieces, giving the tree a sense of continuity.

Even her presents (or panettone, as she clarifies) underneath follow suit, with metallic and striped wrapping that feels like an extension of the decorating scheme.

For anyone browsing the best places to buy Christmas decor this season, it is a good reminder that a generous collection of decorations can still look sophisticated when the colors are carefully chosen.

Decorating with gold is particularly effective at this time of year, not least because of the way it catches the light. 'Gold has lasted on Christmas trees because it does something no other color quite does,' explains Wendi Gee, principal designer at Wendi Gee Interiors in Austin, Texas.

'It warms everything around it. Under evening light or the glow of the tree lights, gold ribbon catches and softens the whole room, so it feels like candlelight rather than decoration.'

For a tree as full as Sofía's, texture is just as important as color. Mixing different finishes and introducing ribbon helps break up the arrangement, giving the eye somewhere to rest among the ornaments.

'Ribbon in particular works because it adds movement,' Wendi explains. 'Ornaments sit on a tree, but ribbon moves through it. I like to tuck it in loose, in deep swoops, instead of wrapping it tight, which lets the eye travel around the tree and makes it look fuller without adding more pieces.'

The choice of gold also makes the scheme surprisingly versatile. As Wendi notes, it works just as well alongside traditional red and green as it does with white or softer neutrals. The secret is choosing the right finish. She recommends matte or brushed gold ribbon with a wired edge. 'A shiny, flat gold can look cheap, while a softer finish reads as warm and a little antique.'

Sofía's tree reminds us that Christmas decor ideas don't have to mean choosing between restraint and abundance. With a confident palette and a combination of finishes, even the most extravagant display can feel beautifully curated.
