Cher's Malibu estate, with its fusion of Venetian and Moorish architecture, is among the most spectacular of celebrity homes, and its grandeur is evident even before entering through its front door.

Designed by Martyn Lawrence Bullard, the front yard foreshadows the design elements that await inside, starting with the most spectacular focal point of all, the star-shaped water feature.

Like all water features, it brings a sensory component to Cher's front yard, but its size, shape, and mosaic design command attention in a way that rivals a five-star resort. It makes a first impression that resonates, upgrading her curb appeal to new heights. It's unique to her, but that doesn't mean we can't be inspired by its power and how water features translate to yards of all sizes.

Shop the look

Installing a water feature comes with its aesthetic benefits, as Cher reminds us. However, before investing in any piece (regardless of its size), there are some key requirements to consider. First, proper ground preparation is crucial.

'Contemporary water features often require level, stable surfaces and effective drainage around the perimeter to prevent waterlogging,' comments Ted Bromley-Hall, the managing director at IBRAN.

The shape is also important to sucsess. However, thankfully, Cher offers the perfect blueprint to follow. 'Modern water features work best when they complement clean lines and geometric shapes. Consider rectangular or circular designs rather than irregular natural forms – materials like corten steel, concrete, or sleek stone work well,' Ted comments.

It's also important to consider the area around your feature. To improve your space, Ted recommends investing in some gravel grids that are great for 'creating stable, permeable surfaces around water features'. A grid will also prevent gravel migration whilst maintaining a clean contemporary look.

With the correct planning, you can enjoy the splendor and soothing qualities of a water feature, even if it's not as intricate or extensive as the one in Cher's yard. No matter the size, you can take a lesson from her iconic home and bring it to life in your own way.
