Don’t call an electrician. Don’t puncture ugly holes in your walls. After six years of renting, this tool-free hack is how I’ve had everyone fooled

People think I own my New York City apartment. Fleur-de-lis molding cradles the corners (movable putty), green granite countertops have mysteriously turned to black swirly marble (it’s a sticker), and sconces sit beside furniture, above artwork, and just about every stretch of wall. Little do they know, I’ve never called an electrician. I just went to Amazon.

Yes, like the film I used to fake new stone, I stick my wall lights on like the ingenious electrician I never had. Two shaded, antique-style fixtures flanking a $20 nameless oil painting I picked up at the flea suddenly make my “collection” look like it was done by a somebody. They’re forgiving, too: when I get bored and swap that 24-inch frame for a 30-inch one, I simply move them. And rewiring a building over 100 years old? Even if I did own, I’m not sure that’s a hill I’d climb when the result looks the same for a fraction of the price.

So this Prime Day, don’t call an electrician. Don’t puncture ugly holes in your walls. Ahead, 16 peel-and-stick lighting ideas to illuminate your favorite focal points, lend old-timey ambient elegance, and make a rental look like you’ve owned it for years.
