The Chicest Red for 2027 Isn’t Oxblood – It’s a Forgotten Traditional Shade You Probably Associate With Christmas
Call it the new burgundy or the new (old) neutral. Either way, this archival shade is back, and far too chic to save for the holidays
There's a regal new red coming for oxblood in 2027. Mylands has just named Huguenot™ No.49, a sumptuously moody, deeply characterful crimson, its Color of the Year. And in a sea of cliched-to-death oxbloods and screaming scarlets, it does actually feel quite fresh. Which is funny, considering it's been sitting in the archives of a paintmaker founded in 1884.
Wealth. Power. Passion. Crimson is historic shorthand for all of the above, and it’s not just Mylands resurrecting this forgotten colorway. It’s all over Lulu and Georgia’s new collection, from "Crimson Rider" wall art and button-tufted Talcott Striped Pillows to a charming bead-legged side table collaboration with designer to the stars Heidi Caillier. But crimson is cropping up in more humble corners, too. On Wayfair, washable, antique-style rugs abound, adding a rich touch to the kitchen or laundry room. It even served as the color pop of choice alongside grass-court green in Venus Williams’s court-centric collaboration with Crate & Barrel.
What makes this storied shade feel novel, then, might be less about the shade itself but the company it keeps. Or, more interestingly, the colors it's replacing. Mylands calls crimson a fresh alternative not just to cliched-to-death oxbloods, but to blues and greens, as color trends move away from cooler tones and toward warmer, heritage-inspired shades. The new neutral?
Crimson has history. Huguenot™ No.49 was pulled from Mylands’ archives, its name an homage to the luxurious silk weavings of the Huguenots.
So, no: crimson isn’t just for Christmas. Or even fall-winter, for that matter. Shop the new moody hue du jour.
