For most of us, inhabiting a Nancy Meyers universe is little more than a pipe dream. But if you’re Annie Meyers-Shyer, her daughter, you actually grew up in one. Better known as @ThisOakHouse on Instagram, the fashion-industry insider-turned-renovator has spent years thoughtfully revamping an inherited 1946 Los Angeles Colonial-Dutch home. Now, with her new Target collaboration, she’s giving the rest of us a chance to bring a little of that lived-in magic home, too.
The eight-piece collection, inspired by antiques and collected interiors, suggests you might have inherited a little Gerard Colcord design DNA yourself. An amphora-shaped vase takes on a warmer, more unexpected character in rattan. At the same time, barely-there glass hurricanes come in a pair of decidedly no-big-light sizes, designed to keep the ambience going year-round – fall or spring, no matter.
The Meyersian love of the worn, layered, and inviting is unmistakable, but so is Annie’s distinctly earthier, English-country-decor-meets-California point of view. Where Nancy Meyers might reach for a classic pinstripe cushion, Annie’s takes a more aged, artistic turn in ivory and faded blue ikat. Thumbprints on ceramics? But of course. Like Annie’s nitty-gritty deep dive into the renovation of her historic home, the collection feels personal, collected, and effortlessly lived-in.
It took Annie four years, and a lot more than $25, to perfect her renovation. But between old-timey rattan weaves and faded oatmeal throws, who’s to say yours wasn't years in the making, too?
What makes a house a home? ‘You do,’ says Annie. ‘The books you read, the family photos that adorn your shelves, the souvenirs from trips that hold sentimental meaning, and the little things your kids make with their whole heart are what give a home its personality. And don’t save your favorite pieces for special occasions. Light the candles, fill the vase with flowers, and keep the throw where you actually use it. A home should feel lived in, not staged.’
Despite coming from a behemoth retailer – and starting at just $25 – none of these pieces feel staged, either. They’re made for candle wax and crumbs, for flowers and family, for getting horizontal on the sofa – just with a little more Nancy Meyers-level cinematography. Great taste, it seems, really does run in the family.
