On late-summer Manhattan streets, whether you were a certified Matthieu Blazy Chanel stan or a total non-fashion person simply looking to escape summer’s all-black uniform, it seemed every New Yorker was sporting a splash of teal, turquoise, or, most fancifully, ‘Tiffany’ blue. But with Labor Day officially behind us, can this month-long aquatic obsession make an equally splashy entrance into fall?
At home, the answer is a resounding yes – not only for its bijou pedigree, but for how neatly it lifts fall’s color palette. ‘Tiffany blue feels especially relevant right now because it sits at the intersection of optimism, nostalgia and luxury,’ says Fairfield County-based interior designer Prudence Bailey, who loves pairing it with decidedly un-summery textures like velvet, mohair, lacquer, and patterned wallpaper.
‘After years of restrained neutrals, I think people are craving color again, but they still want it to feel elevated. This shade does both. It’s joyful and fresh, yet it still carries that sense of polish and sophistication we associate with Tiffany & Co.’
And that polish can take plenty of forms: splashed across the stove with Le Creuset’s new ‘Riviera’ colorway, launched earlier this year; set on the dining table via Ginori 1735’s electric riff, edged in hand-painted gold; or brought to the sofa with Soho Home’s rich geometric velvet and fringe.
It’s not just a phase: Tamara Feldman goes bijou with Tiffany blue year-round. ‘Turquoise and teal appear in our work, and never as an accent, but rather a complete color story.’
‘Pair Tiffany blue with olive, mustard, or maroon, and you won’t look back,’ insists Jonathan Adler Design Studio Creative Director Benjamin Brougham. ‘Not only do these colors work for fall; I think they work even better for fall. They become even more interesting when you strip away their summery associations and set them against richer, warmer colors and materials.’
Then again, Benjamin and his team recently ignored the supporting colors altogether, deciding to ‘double down’ on turquoise with a full-on kitchen color drench. The high-jewelry references remained obvious. ‘We paired it with an antique mirror backsplash and a large brass chandelier. Instant jewel box!’
