Whimsical has been a bit of a buzzword in interiors so far this year. The antidote to the sleek, minimalist all-neutral interiors that have dominated trends in decades past, in 2026, we are embracing layers, patterns, and color, and upping the whimsy.

The perfect example of charming, whimsical design can be seen in our recent tour of Designer Lauren Carlucci's Windham project, where she uses whimsical wallpaper in almost every room. A playful blue and white gingham print envelops the dining room, while a sketch-like botanical wallpaper adorns the walls in the bedroom. These whimsical styles bring energy, character, and imaginative appeal to the rooms in which they exist – demonstrating the stylistic possibilities that exist outside of the comfort zone of plain white paint.
