When it comes to creating a home that feels as inviting as it looks, few do it quite like designer Marie Flanigan. Known for her timeless aesthetic, her interiors strike that perfect balance between elevated and effortless.

So, it’s no surprise that her approach to Thanksgiving decor follows the same philosophy. Allowing us a sneak peek at her shopping list, Marie Flanigan's festive formula for this year centers on pieces that are beautifully usable – because, as she puts it, 'Beauty and comfort go hand in hand, and the most memorable gatherings are those that feel intimate, thoughtful, and full of warmth.'

Starting with subtle fall decor, Marie recommends steering clear of kitsch Thanksgiving motifs and looking to nature instead for inspiration.

'For Thanksgiving, I love to fill my home with pieces that feel natural, hand-formed, and authentic – vases with sculptural silhouettes, pottery with organic textures, and platters that double as art,' says Marie. 'I often bring in dramatic branches or foraged greenery to create height and movement in a room; they’re such a simple way to make a statement while keeping things grounded in nature.'

Her holiday palette drifts away from the expected reds and oranges, favoring tones that instead feel rich yet quietly refined. 'While autumn often calls to mind reds and oranges, I prefer to lean into more nuanced tones of deep greens, warm caramels, and saturated burgundies that feel rich, elevated, and unexpected for the season.'

A few thoughtful swaps can transform a room’s atmosphere instantly. 'Throughout the home, I layer cozy, tactile details like fur-lined throws draped over armchairs and swap out throw pillows for rich velvet or shearling options – an easy way to add depth, warmth, and a tactile touch to any space,' she suggests.

Of course, Marie knows exactly how to create an Instagram-worthy Thanksgiving table, like this chic tablescape seen above, framed beautifully by the hung tapestry that the table takes its inspiration from.

'For a stunning tablescape, I love to incorporate metallic touches such as brushed gold flatware or a burnished bronze vase; they catch the light beautifully and add just the right amount of polish,' she says.

When it comes to the place settings, Marie mixes finishes and textures for a collected, effortless feel. 'Don’t be afraid to mix finishes – matte ceramics with delicate, colored glassware, and soft linen napkins – for a look that feels collected and effortless,' she suggests.

For a final touch, 'bring in candlelight that flickers softly as guests arrive,' Marie suggests to help your home smell like fall. 'The right scent, something earthy, like sandalwood, cypress, or amber, instantly sets the tone and makes the space feel warm and inviting.'

'For me, hosting is about creating an environment where people want to linger. Thanksgiving is the perfect time to celebrate that sense of ease and connection.'
