I can't be the only keen host with a tendency to get carried away during the festive season. I spend months feverishly adding to my mood board, and when it's finally time to host holiday gatherings, my Christmas table decor ideas can become rather elaborate. After a simple tip from Shea McGee, however, I think I've finally figured out how to create a picture-perfect tablescape that still feels warm and inviting.

Balancing elegance with a more relaxed feel is tricky at the best of times, but Shea McGee's secret weapon is surprisingly simple. In a recent video shared on the Studio McGee Instagram, Shea explains that she always relies on one key element: texture.

It might sound straightforward, but Shea's advice has really stayed with me. Every designer knows how to balance core elements like color, depth, and pattern – but texture really can be transformative.

'When I'm setting up for the holidays, I always like to do a more formal tablescape, because I think it makes the event feel special and memorable,' Shea explains in the video. 'But there always has to be an element of feeling relaxed, as well – which is why I love to incorporate woven textures, because it's a nice juxtaposition.'

Just like the rustic pieces that adorn Shea's 'festive farmhouse' table, these additions can bring instant warmth to a scheme, creating a look that maintains a sense of sophistication while still feeling utterly inviting.

'When it comes to holiday hosting, we love adding small, unexpected details that make guests feel special and welcome,' writes Shea in the caption. 'Layers, woven textures or a simple ribbon can bring just the right touch of festive charm without feeling overdone.'

To me, it's all about softening the edges. Think literally: McGee & Co's Nevelyn fringed tablecloth is the perfect, cottagecore-style example, paired with lace trim napkins and braided placemats. You can even bring woven textures to serveware and glassware, too. Tuckernuck's seagrass highball glasses are real statement pieces with the seagrass detail, not to mention Pottery Barn's handwoven serving set, which brings a rustic touch to the table.

In a more abstract sense, however, textures can 'soften' a more polished scheme to bring personality to your table. I've learnt that a more casual look can be perfect for the holidays, allowing guests to come together and unwind.

From Shea's chair bow trick to her hydrangea Christmas tree decor idea, I'd say she knows exactly how to add stunning textures into any space – and I'll be taking her advice this year to create an effortlessly magical tablescape.
