David and Victoria Beckham’s Antique-Style Sconces Will Make You Rethink Harsher Downlights – They’re So Atmospheric
The couple mastered 'mid-level lighting' – a designer's open secret to an understated sanctuary that visually expands a space
As one might expect, the grand staircase of David and Victoria Beckham’s Holland Park mansion is a celebration of period charm – in honor of its mid-19th century roots. It is their ambient lighting scheme, however, that truly elevates the space.
Rather than relying on utilitarian ceiling downlights, the couple opted for minimalist, candle-inspired wall sconces spaced on both their entryway wall and the top of their stairs.
The resulting look is subtly atmospheric, drawing the eye across the masonry while casting a quietly luxurious warmth that transitions effortlessly from day to night. The Beckhams' entryway lighting appears to be bespoke, but achieving the look is still possible. This similar piece from Wayfair is my favorite. It's designed to mimic a candle, for a Victorian-inspired look that would look perfect in their home.

Shop the Beckham-Inspired Sconce Edit
If you're looking to add some Beckham-inspired character to your walls, this sconce is an easy win. The black finish gives it a timeless feel, and it looks especially beautiful flanking an entryway mirror or lighting up a staircase with a soft glow.
A wall sconce like this is one of my favorite ways to elevate an entryway, and Victoria Beckham agrees. The black candle-style design feels classic without trying too hard, adding warmth and character from the moment you walk through the door.
If you love decorative lighting that doubles as art, this wall sconce is a beautiful choice. The sculptural bow design feels playful yet sophisticated thanks to its patinated metal finish, and it looks just as striking on its own as it does displayed as a pair in a living room or entryway.
Amplify your flame with this modernist sconce from Audo Copenhagen, where the drama isn’t just in the glow. It's a simple yet striking way to bring warmth and atmosphere to a space that leans more towards modernism than the Beckham home does.
Few pieces make as much of an impact as Anthropologie’s scalloped-edge candle sconce. Whether you style it in an entryway, bedroom, or dining room, it instantly adds personality and charm, bringing a playful touch that makes the whole space feel more considered.
This timeless brass wall sconce feels right at home in a period property, but it works just as well in a modern space where you want to add a touch of vintage character. The brass finish looks especially beautiful against crisp white walls, creating an elegant contrast.
Achieving this level of balance requires moving away from one-dimensional lighting schemes in favor of a 'mid-level lighting' technique. As Ally Dowsing-Reynolds, a lighting expert and co-founder of Dowsing & Reynolds, explains.
'People are craving spaces that are cozy, calm and warm, and lighting plays a huge role in that. While statement overhead lighting fixtures still have their place, we’re seeing understated lighting become more important in the home as people look to create a calming effect in their space,' Ally begins.
'We've seen that people are particularly responding to vintage touches and nostalgic accents in interiors this year, and sconces can be key in recreating this effect. Opt for fluted glass shades, gold curved metalwork and vintage brass to create an antique-inspired feel.'
So how exactly does this link to the mid-level lighting technique? And how can we layer lighting for a similar effect? 'To add depth throughout your space, use mid-level lighting such as candle or electric light sconces; these add atmosphere and an elevated feel to the space while drawing the eye toward the wall and making the most of the space you have,' Ally says.

'Low-level lighting with floor and table lamps adds another layer of visual intrigue and illuminates key areas within the space. Try arranging a cluster of items with different heights, such as a group of candles, to create a dynamic display and add a luxurious finishing touch.'
The shift toward understated, layered illumination is proof that the best interior choices are often the softest ones. Take it from this stylish couple – they would know.
