While these tones are safe and, we admit, very beautiful, there remain other colors that are surprisingly as versatile. They just need a platform. One such example is the blue sofa in George and Amal Clooney’s former townhouse.
Located on Manhattan's SoHo, on Sullivan Street, the townhouse George and Amal rented during their stay in New York in the mid-2010s is a blueprint for softened industrial design (with exposed brickwork). Yet, rather than warming the high-ceilinged living area with conventional neutral, the space relies on a far more dramatic anchor: A dark blue living room sofa.

'One of its biggest advantages is longevity in style – navy and ink tones don’t date in the way trend-led colors can, meaning the piece continues to feel current for years,' Sergiu says. 'It also has a grounding effect in interiors, helping larger or open-plan rooms feel more cohesive, intentional yet fun.'
Rather than competing with the room's urban bones, the velvet upholstery bridges the gap between the raw architecture and more luxe comfort. It also pairs beautifully alongside the other textures, including the rug, like this chic option from Amber Interior Design.
'Styling-wise, dark blue works beautifully with warm metallics like brass or aged gold for a more elevated, luxurious feel,' Sergiu notes.
'For a softer, Scandi-inspired look, pair it with natural woods, oatmeal linens and muted greens. If you want contrast, crisp white walls or pale stone flooring make the sofa the focal point without overwhelming the room.'
The living room upholds this design formula effortlessly. However, beyond its aesthetics, there are functional benefits to choosing a darker anchor piece over a delicate off-white.
'It’s also one of the most forgiving upholstery choices for everyday living, hiding wear well while still feeling refined, which makes it ideal for family homes or high-traffic spaces,' Sergiu says.
It serves as proof that quiet luxury does not require timid colors. While the Clooneys have moved out, the space remains a reminder that a deep blue sofa remains the ultimate unsung hero.
