As one might expect from a historic Lake Como estate, George Clooney’s Villa Oleandra is a study in old-world Italian elegance. However, while the villa’s grand proportions and teal walls command immediate attention, it is the living room's centerpiece – an antique-gold linen sofa – that serves as the ultimate hero piece.

While 'safer' neutrals have long shaped how we decorate our living rooms, George's choice of a rich ochre feels revolutionary. It's a daring color play, yet it perfectly anchors the room's rich patina, proving that statement sofas (similar to this beautiful sofa from Crate & Barrel) don't have to shout to be heard.

To understand why decorating with gold works so beautifully, we turned to Blanca Sanchez, Director of Halo Design Interiors, who explains why stepping away from the safety of beige and grey is a risk always worth taking.

'A gold or deep yellow living room sofa is obviously quite the bold choice, but it's one that can completely change the feel of a room if it’s styled properly. Most people choose neutral sofas because they feel safer, but a warmer statement color can actually make a space feel more welcoming, layered and full of personality,' comments Blanca Sanchez, the director of Halo Design Interiors.

'Gold and yellow tones bring warmth into a room and can stop a space from feeling flat, particularly in homes that rely heavily on whites, grays or cooler colors. You just need to choose the right shade. A bright, lemon-yellow sofa can feel overwhelming in some rooms, but deeper shades such as mustard, ochre or antique gold are much easier to live with and have a more timeless quality, plus they work well with a range of interior styles.'

Far from limiting the rest of the room, the sofa's golden tone actually opens up a host of styling possibilities. As Blanca explains, the secret is to treat the piece as the living room's starting point rather than something every other element has to match.

'I’d avoid treating a gold or yellow sofa as a piece that needs to be matched perfectly. Instead, use it as the starting point and build around it with complementary tones,' she explains.

'Deep greens, navy, charcoal, cream and warm browns all work beautifully with gold because they create contrast without competing for attention. Adding cushions or throws in different textures can also help the sofa feel integrated into the room.'

If you've been hesitant to move beyond neutral upholstery, George's living room makes a case for reconsidering. A gold sofa may feel like a bold investment, but when treated as the foundation of a layered scheme (rather than an accent to match), it becomes surprisingly easy to style.
