Calvin Klein has always been known for his luxe approach to minimalism, elevating basics to be elegant and effortlessly cool. Beyond his fashion career, the designer's New York apartment is a strong testament to his mastery of the style.
Even in the glamorous '80s, which boasted decadent interiors and bold patterns, Calvin's home was an ode to minimalism. Archival photos show that his apartment had white walls, studio lighting, and a brown sofa. Each piece was carefully chosen and definitively simple. From every angle, the art was the defining feature of the space. An African mask warms one wall, and a simple painting defines another. A teardrop-shaped sculpture brings a metallic glow and style to the coffee table.
Calvin Klein's space reveals the power of decorating with art to uplift the most muted of rooms. With this technique in mind, Homes & Gardens invites you to step inside Calvin's living room and explore how he made a simple design work. We've also curated an edit of products for recreating his look, and sourced expert commentary on how to use statement art to uplift a minimalist scheme in your own home.

Recreate Calvin's Look at Home
Calvin Klein adds character to his white walls with African folk art, and this gorgeous hand carved mask is a great choice for getting to look. It could work as a stand alone piece or as part of a gallery wall.
Potentially one of my favorite couches, this distressed faux-leather sofa is ultra-premium. It's crafted from solid oak with angled dowels and rolled arms, cultivating a vintage, minimalist aesthetic.
As seen in Calvin Klein's living room, a vase can be a stunning piece of art that adds texture and warmth to the home. These metallic ones are a great option at an even better price point.
Artwork doesn't have to be bold to be impactful. This neutral piece would be the perfect way to add texture to and uplift a boring wall.
Calvin Klein uses a lacquer coffee table to add a reflective texture to his beautiful living room, and this forest green one is especially striking. I love that it brings in a bit of color, but still feels deliciously minimalist.
As Calvin's coffee table styling demonstrates, a few simple vases filled with flowers can have a transformative effect on the design of your home. These identical vases are easy and beautiful.
Nina Lichtenstein, New York-based interior designer, explains that Calvin's method of designing with art works because of the way it draws the eye. She states: 'Statement art serves as a bold visual anchor in any room. It has the unique ability to convey mood, spark conversation, and create a memorable atmosphere. Whether it’s an oversized abstract painting, a vivid photograph, or a dynamic sculpture, statement art draws the eye and sets the tone for the space. It’s not just about filling a wall — it’s about making a space feel complete, sophisticated, and deeply personal.'

Recreating Calvin's design comes down to balance. Nina advises: 'Give your statement art room to stand out by ensuring there’s ample negative space around it. This could mean leaving the surrounding walls uncluttered or opting for minimalist furniture that doesn’t compete for attention.'
The right lighting reflecting off white walls also helps beautiful artwork to elevate a minimalist living room. Nina recommends: 'Highlight your statement art with proper lighting. Whether it’s natural light streaming in from a nearby window or strategically placed spotlights, lighting can enhance the colors, textures, and overall presence of the artwork.'
Minimalism doesn't have to be boring. Handled right, this style can be so elegant and elevated. Adding beautiful art that's full of character is the perfect place to start.
