Cameron Diaz's backyard is 'a model of contemporary style and lush planting', experts explain why
The actress's modern backyard is ultra-chic
If you're a fan of contemporary gardens, you won't want to miss Cameron Diaz's backyard. The actress's outdoor space includes impeccably trimmed, bright green grass surrounded by vibrant trees and a lush living wall. It includes a stylish brick patio accented with a bright white outdoor umbrella. Above the patio, a modern trellis with a top of arching white fabric accents the space and provides some stylized shade. Against the trees, a stone fountain takes center stage.

Experts love Cameron Diaz's backyard idea. Rachel Bull, head of gardens at Homes & Gardens states on the modern backyard: 'Cameron Diaz’s backyard is a model of contemporary style and lush planting. The outside living area visible in the background is located under a canopy, offering vital shade from the California summer sun.' The white in the canopy matches the white of the patio umbrella creating a contemporary, unified feel.
Rachel is a gardening writer, flower grower and floral designer. Her journalism career began 15 years ago on Country Living magazine, sparking a love of container gardening and wild planting. After more than a decade writing for and editing a range of consumer, business and special interest titles, Rachel became editor of floral art magazine The Flower Arranger. She then trained and worked as a floral designer and stylist in London for six years, and has created floral installations at iconic London venues including Kew Gardens, the Barbican and Peckham's Asylum Chapel
The combination of plants with artfully chosen outdoor furniture creates a perfect balance in Cameron's backyard. Rachel states, 'The neutral seating and minimalist soft furnishings are teamed with abundant, dense foliage from trees and a living wall. This creates the desirable, calming effect of a cozy, natural enclave.'
'I love the effect of using a variety of soft furnishings and outdoor furniture in a backyard to create an outdoor living room,' adds Carlin van Noppen, interior designer and founder of Fig Linens and Home. 'It greatly expands the available cozy space in your home. Furnishings like indoor outdoor throw blankets, indoor outdoor pillows, and outdoor rugs are great for creating this effect.'
Carlin Van Noppen is the CEO and head interior designer at Fig Linens and Home. She has over 20 years of experience providing design expertise for beautiful homes, hotels, yachts, and private planes and now manages a boutique that has been named the Best Linen Shop in Connecticut several years in a row.
The garden fountain puts the final touch on Cameron's contemporary backyard. Rachel says, 'What's more, Cameron has added an antique-style stone fountain to the scene. This is a pleasing juxtaposition in terms of style, adding visual interest. The water will also produce a beautifully relaxing sound, making this the perfect space for relaxed entertaining.'
This heavy-duty 'sunbrella' is built to last. Its beautiful white fabric stands up to sun, wind, and mildew.
The number of backyard styles is as expansive as the number of people who have backyards. By choosing a backyard that fits into your individual style, like Cameron Diaz has done, you can create a timeless space that you will always love.
