Every year, wicker furniture makes a welcome reappearance among outdoor furniture trends, and 2025 is no exception. Once again, rattan pieces fill design experts' carts, but I've already found my ultimate inspiration piece on Goldie Hawn's terrace.

The Overboard actress first shared her white wicker chair, topped with a delicate floral printed cushion, the perfect complement to her cream terrace. Alongside the chair, she has adorned her terrace with antique-style pieces, including a distressed-style table, lamp, and a beautiful palm tree.

Rattan and wicker pieces are often (rightly) associated with the late 1950s and 1960s, when they became a popular feature of the modern American home. However, this weave dates back through the millennia. In fact, it's said to be the oldest furniture-making method in history, existing for at least 5,000 years

The agelessness of rattan and wicker makes it one of the best outdoor furniture materials you can choose. However, as design experts explain, there's something particularly stylish about rattan this summer.

'We love to see the rattan furniture trend going into 2025. With indoor/outdoor style staying key, rattan continues to be a timeless investment that can fit effortlessly into every space, no matter the size,' comments Nicola Shaw, the senior head of buying homeware at Urban Outfitters.

Alongside introducing wicker to your exterior space, Nicola explains it's just as trendy indoors. 'It’s interesting to see how these 70s-inspired pieces are starting to move out of the bedroom and into the dining room, from bar cabinets to lighting, it adds texture and warmth to every room,' she says. 'The beauty of rattan is that its raw material makes it easy to match it to your vibe.'

When styling around rattan, introducing soft textures and plants, just as Goldie demonstrates, is the secret to success.

'Use soft textiles such as cushions on dining furniture to complement the woven styles and add plants to bring more natural colour to your surroundings… plants + rattan = our dream combo,' Nicola says.

If there's ever a time to upgrade your patio furniture, it's now. Take it from us, and Goldie.
