The couple's texture-rich space proves that a dramatic, all-black palette can still feel incredibly warm and inviting

There's a heroic element to a leather sofa that feels somewhat unsung. This staple has subtly introduced texture and comfort to mainstream living rooms since the '60s, but, despite their power, they're not praised alongside more vibrant sofa trends. If any space can convince you of its drama, however, it's Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos's lounge.

While some designers ask if leather couches are still in style, Mark and Kelly's space, in all its moody drama, makes the ultimate case for this retro piece. The color-drenched lounge, designed in collaboration with William Sofield of Studio Sofield, was made to feel like '1970s New York City meets 1920s Paris,' mixing dark, dramatic tones with an eclectic, vintage aesthetic. The black leather sofa is at the very heart of this.

The living room sofa was designed by William Sofield and was specifically upholstered in high-end Dualoy leather, resulting in a piece that's bespoke to the couple. For a similar look, I adore the Cerellia upholstered sofa from Wayfair. It has the same moody charm as the couple's, and will feel timeless in any living room, whether it's painted black or not.

As you might expect with a 'harsh' leather sofa, styling is vital. Antoni Roig, an Interior Designer at OKA, recommends decorating with a statement pillow (like Kelly and Mark have done), and a luxe throw, similar to this one from McGee & Co.

'Aged, brown leathers add a masculine touch to a room that can be reminiscent of The Godfather, especially when paired with dark wood tones, brown soft furnishings, and a color palette of olive greens and earthy russets,' Antoni comments.

'The key to embracing masculine interiors is to balance strength with subtlety, so I’d suggest pairing down dark leathers with softer accents like a throw or cushion in cashmere or wool, and consider artwork with warm colours running through to break up the darker tones.'

Similarly, Lighting shouldn't be overlooked. 'Dotting lamps around the room at different heights can introduce a soft glow, while metallic accents can also help to lift the space,' Antoni adds.

Far from outdated, the leather sofa emerges here as the ultimate lesson in timeless, atmospheric design – just take it from Mark and Kelly.
