There's nothing quite as beautiful as a mid-century modern living space bathed in California sunshine. Just look at Brooklyn Beckham's latest reel, which showcases a masterclass in retro-contemporary styling.

While the space embraces classic mid-century modern elements like low sightlines, rich wood paneling, and vintage accents, it is grounded by a contemporary icon that challenges the idea that gray interiors have to be boring.

The true hero of the room is B&B Italia's Tufty-Time Modular Sofa. Designed by Patricia Urquiola in 2005, this low-profile piece actually pays homage to the free-form modular layouts of the 1970s.

Upholstered in a sophisticated warm taupe that shifts to charcoal depending on the light, its distinct geometric grid proves that a neutral anchor can bring plenty of character to a space.

This living room sofa available to buy via B&B Italia's store, but there are also even more affordable alternatives for those who want to get their look for less. This Cylar Velvet Reversible Modular Sofa from Wayfair is my favorite. It features deep biscuit tufting across the seats, back, and sides, creating that distinct geometric pattern that makes the Tufty-Time so famous.

This design approach directly subverts traditional decorating rules, proving that neutral furniture can be a true statement point. Paulina Wojas, an interior designer at Lovesofas, agrees, explaining how a gray sofa can easily become a room's defining feature.

'A gray sofa doesn’t have to be boring; it can actually be a complementary addition to your living room,' Paulina says. 'When styled correctly, it can enhance the room’s appearance while being a focal piece. While gray has been widely associated with a clean, neutral design for a minimalist look, vibrancy and visual appeal can still be achieved using this color.'

In Brooklyn's layout, the muted tone of the couch allows the surrounding architectural details to stand out, but Paulina notes that you can elevate a gray piece even further by playing with the senses. The key to shaking off its bland reputation is simple addition.

'Introduce different colors by layering textures,' she suggests. 'Opt for red, green, or blue for a striking contrast that oozes sophistication, or softer palettes like white, blush pink, or other neutrals for a flattering but subtle style. Incorporate these hues through cushions and throws for added warmth and eye-catching aesthetics.'

Paulina also notes that pairing the sofa with a bold-coloured accent chair is a great way to create a contrasting ensemble.

For those who want to replicate the sleek, minimalist aesthetic of the living room, Paulina emphasizes that a cohesive design relies on tactical fabric choices.

'Decorate with neutrals such as cream or white for a cohesive design, but introduce these tones through different textures to add visual interest,' she advises. 'Opt for tasteful colors and accessories for a timeless design, using classic hues such as whites and creams, and elegant textures like linen, cotton, or velvet.'

By leaning into deep textures, low sightlines, and unexpected styling choices, this layout completely rewrites the rules on neutrals. It serves as perfect inspiration for anyone looking to bridge the gap between retro warmth and clean, contemporary luxury.
