Lionel Messi and Antonela Roccuzzo’s Use of Multi-Tonal Gray Sets the Standard for Serene, High-End Living Room Design in 2026
Moving away from flat gray trends, the couple's layered space relies on high-texture investment pieces to create a softer haven
Gray, often categorized as unfashionable, relies heavily on its tactile qualities to feel elegant. Thankfully, Lionel Messi and Antonela Roccuzzo have shared a unitenitonal masterclass in the shape of their Fort Lauderdale living room.
While South Florida decor is often synonymous with more vibrant coastal hues, the couple's living room proves that a neutral palette can be incredibly dynamic when executed with depth – and, as suggested, the secret is in the textures.
Antonela is seen in their neutral living room, amidst the texture of their shaggy rug and the soft foundation of their light gray sofa (like this one from Wayfair).
With these textures considered, the lounge masterfully avoids the colder tones that give gray a bad reputation. Instead, it feels like a study in luxe design, where rich materials convince even the harshest of critics of this controversial hue.

Shop the Messi-Inspired Living Room Edit
Just like the sofa in Messi's home, this Wayfair option is a modular sectional with thick, double-layer blocky cushions designed for a 'cloud-inspired' sink-in feel. It creates that same relaxed atmosphere (in that all-important light gray upholstery).
The most striking feature of the rug in Messi's living room is how deep and plush it is – you can see Antonela herself sinking into the long strands. This rug has a 2.5-inch pile height for a similar ultra-thick, luxurious shag look.
Messi's pillows have that distinct, wild, wispy texture characteristic of Mongolian sheepskin or high-pile faux fur, rather than a short, flat fleece. This Amazon cover captures that exact long-strand texture perfectly.
The pillow to the left of Antonela has a completely smooth, light-catching surface, and this Amazon option has the same reflective sheen that shifts in tone as natural daylight changes. It looks so much more expensive than $10.
Textures aside, the compact, boxy shape of Antonela's record player lines up perfectly with the suitcase-style build of this Target option. It's lighthearted and effortless, perfect for enjoying your vinyls (even if your music taste differs from Messi's).
The sharp geometric lines of Messi's accent pillow line up perfectly with the laser-engraved Greek key detailing of this option. It's sophisticated yet cozy, perfect for breaking up flat neutrals and anchoring a luxury lounge look.
This clever approach perfectly illustrates why top designers are reimagining how we decorate with gray and neutrals as a whole, as they explain.
'Light gray has lasted because it's essentially a neutral backdrop, and when the tone is right, it doesn't compete with the rest of the room. I love that it lets the architecture and textures and materials do the bulk of the talking,' says Laetitia Laurent, the principal of Laure Nell Interiors in Boca Raton.
'The gray that people have grown tired of is usually the very cool, flat gray that was everywhere for a while. We rarely use those tones now and instead tend to lean toward warmer grays with more depth because they feel softer/more natural and change really beautifully throughout the day as the light shifts.'

The same thinking applies to furniture, too. When gray is viewed as a timeless foundation rather than a trend, it becomes a practical choice for the pieces you're likely to live with for years.
'I don't choose a light gray sofa because it's trendy. I choose it when it's the right foundation for the room,' Laure adds.
'A well-made living room sofa is an investment, and a timeless neutral gives you the freedom to evolve everything around it over the years without the room feeling dated.' Take it from Lionel and Antonela, who, as ever, were ahead of the crowd.
