Most of us were taught that warm and cool neutrals shouldn't mix – and for good reason. Often the layering of brown and gray can create a space with a muddy, dull effect that feels boring rather than calming. However, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell are known for subverting expectation.

A 2020 photoshoot of their Los Angeles home reveals an entryway bathed in gray and beige and though conventional wisdom says it shouldn't work, it does. The space is soothing and welcoming with a feeling that is deeply appealing and sensory. So, what's their secret to transforming the unexpected color palette?

Megan Slack, design expert and Head of Celebrity Style at Homes & Gardens, explains: 'The block print on the gray wallpaper combined with the subtle grain of the runner rug gives this beige on gray scheme a sense of depth and texture. In addition to adding personality, these patterns make the neutral colors feel more alive. Though the patterns aren't bold or busy, their impact is incredibly strong.'

Temper this boldness with a neutral color palette and wooden furniture for a welcoming and inviting space. A rug grounds the space, adds warmth underfoot and can inject a hint of color or pattern.'

When designing an entryway inspired by Goldie and Kurt's, it is important to keep scale in mind. Rather than a piece of art, Magdalena recommends: 'Those with smaller entryways should consider a mirror – this will create the illusion of space and make the hallway feel lighter and airier.'

Goldie and Kurt's entryway is proof that with the right treatment, no color scheme need be off limits. Pattern can bring even beige and gray to life.
