I was on the fence about this 'dated' sofa color, but Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick's living room has convinced me of its timelessness

This 'millennial' sofa has divided the internet, but the couple's styling makes it look exceptionally chic and forever stylish

'Millennial gray' is the latest color dividing the internet. Gen Z is calling it 'dreary' and 'dated,' while Millennials are embracing it as an elegant and classic neutral for grounding any space. As a Gen Z-Millennial Cusp (or 'Zillenial' as some would have it), I have sat somewhere in the middle on the debate.

However, after laying eyes on Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick's gray living room sofa, I'm no longer on the fence; I am fully convinced of the timelessness and versatility of gray furniture.

The actors debuted their dreamy couch in an Instagram post by Kyra, showcasing their subtle but impactful styling. Their living room design features a geometric rug with notes of gray and two dark gray throw pillows. It has a cozy and rustic feel, unmoored from any distinct era.

Though the online hordes have labeled this light shade 'millennial gray,' Kevin and Kyra's gray living room proves that the shade can fit styling from a variety of periods.

For instance, their inviting design feels worlds away from the all-gray and beige interiors we've come to associate with the early 2010s. It feels more connected to a time like the 70s. This inability to date the look indicates its timeless nature. No matter the year, there is a way to style a gray sofa that looks either current or nostalgic.

Furthermore, the image has convinced me on the concept of a gray sofa because it shows how versatile the color can be. Sometimes I think of gray, like the critics, as dreary. However, Kevin and Kyra's addition of a few darker, textural elements makes it look rich and cozy.

To recreate the look and style your own gray sofa, I would recommend bringing in visual interest with a beautiful rug and plush throw cushions. You can't go wrong with Kevin and Kyra's guidance.
