A common container garden mistake when starting a project like this is determining how much soil a large pot actually requires.

Martha shares a helpful trick to manage both volume and weight: 'One of the secrets that I used is to use either peanuts or recycle some bubble wrap and fill them halfway so it doesn't add any weight to the pot.' To keep the structure organized, she advises using landscape cloth. 'Put it down like this. This keeps the soil in place, and it doesn't drip down into the bubble wrap. Fill almost three-quarters of the pot, tuck down the excess of the landscape cloth, and you are ready to start planting.'

For the best results this growing season, Martha recommends an organic soil mix. As of 2026, Miracle-Gro Raised Bed Soil (available at Walmart) is a top choice for container gardening.

When you are ready to transition your nursery plants into their new homes, Martha suggests a simple technique: 'Loosen around the bottom of the pot and then turn it upside down. The whole thing comes out.'

To create a visually stunning arrangement, her producer highlights a memorable design method using three specific roles. 'I learned from you having the thriller, which is the tall plant in the middle, and then the filler, which is the medium-sized plant, and the spiller, which is the cascading plant, so they should spill over the side.' This approach ensures your summer blooms look professionally styled.

Once your arrangement is complete, Martha notes that you should water gently and enjoy your new display. Container gardening is a cost-effective way to instantly beautify any outdoor area, making it a perfect addition to your home.
