It's official: ping pong is set to have a big moment thanks to the upcoming release of Marty Supreme starring Timothée Chalamet. In it, he stars as a 1950s table tennis fanatic who wants the sport to be beloved by the masses.

Ping pong tables will all but certainly spike in popularity; however, they are too often utilitarian, neon-colored, and out of place rather than bespoke and complementary to modern or contemporary interiors. If you're looking for game room ideas, designers say that there are plenty of ways to make a ping pong table look elevated.

'What makes this time so exciting is the opportunity to see homes embracing ping-pong as part of their daily life; the opportunity to see people choose tables that are not just a mechanism, but design pieces,' Sébastien Zany, UK marketing & sales development manager at Cornilleau UK tells us.

To avoid having a game room feel too much like an arcade, Sébastien recommends thinking about your ping pong table as you would any other large piece.

'When styling a ping pong table in your home, treat it as you would a beautiful piece of furniture,' he tells us. 'Choose surroundings that echo its refined materials – warm woods, neutral textiles, and clean architectural lines all help the table feel naturally at home in your living or dining space.'

There are plenty of bespoke options on the market right now, like this stunning, minimalistic wood one from Pottery Barn, or this contemporary iteration from Wayfair. Sébastien says that regardless of which material you and silhouette you choose, existing features in a room can also highlight these gaming tables.

'Lighting is key: a soft pendant above the table will highlight its craftsmanship during dinner, while adjustable lighting can set the mood for a spirited match,' he suggests. 'Add sculptural chairs, minimalist accessories, and a few natural elements – such as plants or textured ceramics – to balance playfulness with sophistication.'

Clearly, ping pong tables and the like can be just as functional as they are luxe. If you find one that uses durable and timeless materials, like wood, you are practically guaranteed to have the it accessory of the season.
