If early 2026 was a celebration of soft neutrals, led by Pantone’s Cloud Dancer, Nicole Kidman just suggested the latter half of the year (and beyond) will feel far more vibrant. At last night's Met Gala, she stepped out in a deep, lacquered red that reads less like a passing trend and more like a shift in mood.

Her custom Chanel gown, designed by Matthieu Blazy, leaned into Moulin Rouge-inspired richness without feeling heavy. The color was visible through the sequins, while the feathered trim added softness and movement, both of which nod to the eternal appeal of the Art Deco aesthetic. Despite its boldness, Nicole ensured her dress felt considered, not overdone – proving that, when decorating with red, curation is everything.

Following Nicole's example begins with highly curated red accessories, perfect for bringing a sense of her chicness to the most neutral of spaces. If you've heard of the unexpected red theory, you'll already know just how impactful these picks can be.

'Warm, seductive burgundy and dark reds will continue to add a dash of sophistication across our homes this year,' comments Julia Bilotta, a creative stylist at Sofology.

'Oxblood is an inviting shade with a classic feel, much like a beautiful vintage handbag or favorite pair of brogues, that delivers an injection of opulence whilst remaining warm and elegant.'

When decorating, she suggests choosing pieces with a striking silhouette that will make double the statement.

'Consider pieces in distinctive shapes that deliver cosseting comfort and designer lines. Sofas and chairs with bold silhouettes, rich colors, and tactile fabrics, such as plush velvets, boucle, or even faux fur, complete a luxurious feel to a red-infused room.'

When looking for color combinations to work with red, Julia suggests looking towards colors that are subtler in their impact, starting with a beautiful powder blue.

'Traditionally synonymous with cozy and exclusive spaces like private members clubs, some color pairings with softer shades can create a less serious and more uplifting aesthetic. For example, Morello cherry tones placed alongside powder blue offer a fresh approach to living room red, which is more playful and light when repeated in wallpaper and curtain fabric. It’s a confident color combination, which sets the stage for more chunky and comfortable furniture pieces,' she says.

'Alternatively, like favorite jeans paired with a classic ruby lipstick, an unexpected dash of red has timeless appeal, elevating the everyday into the unusual. Consider adding a layer of visual interest to your living room, making use of the ceiling to bring a sense of harmony to a space. Tie in key pieces such as soft furnishings, lamps, and side tables with architectural elements finished in rich red.'
