When thinking of decorative ceilings, ornate galleries, and historic homes often come to mind. However, painted and mural-covered ceilings are once again on the rise in modern abodes, as evidenced by Olivia Culpo's gorgeous dining room.

The model's luxury entertaining space is predominantly neutral, causing the soft green painted ceiling to shine as a subtle centerpiece, thanks to its washed effect and contrast against the room's creamy beiges. Needless to say, it's a fantastic ceiling idea.

Olivia's ceiling works particularly well to amplify the natural ambiance of the room, from the linen tablecloth to the potted plants. Most of all, it is an unexpected twist on a typical painted accent wall, creating further visual interest.

According to experts, this trending design choice is a worldwide favorite thanks to its versatility and luxe undertones. In fact, it's been used throughout time. For instance, people in ancient civilizations like Egyptians, Romans, and Greeks would decorate their ceilings to convey wealth and sophistication in their homes.

'In 2025, the statement ceiling, often known as the ‘fifth wall’ is absolutely on the rise,' explains luxury London interior designer, Rebecca Hughes. 'Our clients, both in the UK and internationally, are requesting this design feature. A beautiful ceiling design seamlessly ties a space together, adding an element of drama and personality. This trend has been gaining momentum over the past few years, and in 2025, statement ceilings are truly coming into their own.'

One of the main benefits of painting a ceiling is that you are able to highlight intricate features of your home that may otherwise go unnoticed.

'Creating a statement ceiling is all about transforming the frequently overlooked "fifth wall" into a bold feature using color and pattern, often to highlight architectural elements,' says Gary Evans, head of marketing at Andrew Martin. 'It adds depth and drama to a space, drawing the eye upward and creating a more immersive, stylish environment.'

Create a uniform environment by matching a decorative ceiling with accessories, like Olivia Culpo has done with her green napkins and lush, green plants. You can also create some contrast by adding in another unexpected color on the wall, like Olivia's pink curtains. When it comes to a decorative ceiling, the possibilities are truly endless.
