Trust Reba McEntire to remind us why classic design icons are time-honored for a reason. The brown leather sofa in her living room is an age-old staple, looking just as perfect in her rustic Nashville home as it does in a contemporary urban abode.

The singer is among a host of celebrities who I've seen introduce a leather sofa in their living spaces, including the likes of Courteney Cox, Katie Holmes, and Don Johnson, no less.

Every time I see a leather sofa in a celebrity home (or any space, for that matter), I say the same thing: This look is like the cool cousin of interior design. Though it's sometimes labeled as dated, the reality is that it's stylish enough to survive ever-changing design trends. If you're wondering if leather couches are still in style, Reba says yes, and design experts agree.

Shop the look

'Nothing hints at a traditional, earthy room design more than a well-styled brown leather sofa. A mainstay in interior design for centuries now, leather sofas were found in home offices and living rooms across the 18th and 19th centuries, comments Jim Evans, the director of design at Uber Interiors.

As Reba demonstrates, the soft brown neutral pairs well with any other colored tones, including red, as we see through her cushions, and creams, seen in her throw.

'When partnered with earthy or rich colour tones, it can add elegance to any living space. Introducing racing green or burgundy to the walls, cushions, and other small furnishings can accent a leather sofa, giving the space that regal feeling, Jim comments.

For extra styling tips, he recommends thinking beyond the couch and pairing it with a statement mirror that, again, works in any home.

'Think about how additional texture can accompany a leather finish - dark wooden tables, patterned cushions, and ornate mirrors all help a room feel that bit more traditional,' he says.

With this sofa, it's impossible to go wrong. Whether you keep it rustic like Reba, or pair it with a contemporary mirror in a modern living room, you can rest easy knowing it'll look just as classic in a decade from now.
