Outdoor furniture is for outdoor living. That is to say, patio seating doesn't simply need to perform, but has to curate an environment for entertaining, relaxing, and enjoying the sunlight. Sally Field's back porch offers insight into exactly how to create this serene energy with outdoor furniture.

Her method is simple. A recent Instagram post from the actress shows a back porch at the Pacific Palisades home she's lived in since 2002. It's lined with wooden furniture upholstered in beige fabric and accessorized with blue outdoor pillows (I love these ruffled ones from Anthropologie for a more stylized take on the look). The combination creates a tranquil environment that feels elegant, yet it is easy to relax. Her furnishings are the perfect complement to large glass back doors for a stylish contrast.

Sally's home shows that all you need for a gorgeous patio is wooden furniture and beige and blue accents. To explore this technique, Homes & Gardens curated an edit of outdoor furniture inspired by Sally Field's porch to make it easy to recreate her look. We also spoke with interior design experts to understand what works about this design and the lessons we can take from it.

Recreate Sally's Look at Home

Beige, wood, and blue are the perfect combination for creating a coastal garden that instantly makes visitors feel relaxed.

Lena Gierasinska, Interior Design Expert at Barker and Stonehouse, explains: 'Incorporating Mediterranean-inspired interiors into your home helps to create a warm and inviting atmosphere that captures the essence of coastal Europe. A great start would be using color tones that evoke a warm summer holiday feel, such as green blues, warm sunny yellows, and terracotta.'

Outdoor wooden furniture also helps create this coastal look because of its natural texture. 'Natural materials like stone and wood for furniture and decorative accents work really well,' advises Lena. 'Opt for furniture pieces with a rustic yet elegant look, such as weathered wood tables, or loose cover outdoor sofas. White or slightly warm-toned walls complement these natural materials beautifully.' Sally's patio shows just how much payoff this choice can have.

Using a lounger or large sofa on the patio is another trick Sally uses to help create a casual Mediterranean feel in her backyard. Lena states: 'For casual al fresco entertaining, such as barbecues or pre-dinner aperitifs, an outdoor lounging area, complete with a sofa, is a great option. It feels more relaxed and inviting than sitting at the table, and with the growing trend for blurring the boundaries between indoors and out, an outdoor sofa helps to create a seamless space for relaxing and socializing.'
