There's nothing I love more than an antique design trend that comes back looking fresh and modern as ever, and bobbin furniture is one I have had on my radar for the last little while.

Sarah Jessica Parker is clearly a fan of the 17th-century living room trend, too, having recently shared a clip of her own wooden bobbin chair on her Instagram page.

With bulbous arms and floral cushions, this chair is evocative of both Victorian and contemporary design thanks to its playful shape and traditional pattern. Designers agree: spool furniture is as trendy as it is timeless.

According to design experts, spool furniture has been making waves for centuries, appealing to those who appreciate fine woodwork.

'Spool furniture, also known as “bobbin furniture,” traces its roots to the 17th century, though it rose to prominence in 19th-century America,' explains designer Nina Lichtenstein. 'Inspired by the decorative wood-turning techniques popularized in European woodworking, American artisans adopted the use of lathe tools to create rows of rounded knobs, known as spools or bobbins, along bedposts, chair arms, and table legs. The style became especially beloved during the Victorian era, prized for both its ornamentation and skilled joinery.'

She continues, 'Handcrafted from hardwoods like maple, oak, or walnut, these early pieces weren’t just beautiful. They were built to last. Often passed down through generations, antique spool beds and side tables are now treasured finds in both vintage markets and historic homes.'

Despite its history, its longevity lies in its versatility, whimsy, and elevating properties.

'Spool furniture truly has a sense of enduring appeal because it can add polish to a more laidback interior design, or fit right into a more formal or preppy look,' explains Kathy Kuo, founder of the eponymous design brand. 'It's very versatile and can mix well with coastal beach, modern classic, and French country design motifs. There's just something about the delicate detailing on spool furniture that is just so sweet and lovely!'

While Sarah Jessica Parker's chair would suit a cottagecore living room well, spool furniture fits into varied design styles such as modern farmhouse, Scandinavian minimalist, and bohemian.

Ideal for those seeking a trend-forward yet traditional look in their homes, bobbin furniture is the ultimate blend of eccentricity and sophistication.
