Jackie Kennedy Once Drenched Rooms in This ‘Grandma’ Floral – Now Chintz Decor Is Back, and Chicer Than Ever, for 2027
Fanciful riffs on the familiar floral take us straight back to eating cookies in Grandma's pattern-packed living room
The familiar floral once drenched every inch of the ‘Orange Blossom Bedroom’ in the White House, ordered by none other than First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. Forty years ago, it was a fixture in the living rooms of tastemakers like Olivia Newton-John, given a California-cool spin alongside wicker table lamps. Glossy in the front, matte in the back, chintz, the botanically inspired, cottagecore ‘polished cotton,’ has quite the pedigree and, for the first time in decades, this interior design trend is finally shaking its ‘trad’ status as we head into 2027.
In March, chintz got another kind of presidential treatment at Dallas’s second-oldest hotel, The Stoneleigh, where London- and LA-based studio Fettle swathed the Presidential Suite’s headboard, drapery, and lavish baldachin in a signature Lee Jofa chintz. ‘I always think small-scale patterns can conjure a wonderful sense of familiarity and nostalgia, particularly because they remind us of more traditional prints that were often created by hand using woodblocks,’ says UK-based interior designer Tamsyn Mason, pointing to Soane's Rose Mallow as a forever favorite.
There's still plenty of room for those traditionally punchy florals at GreenRow’s and Anthropologie’s perennial garden party, while Brooklinen takes a more abstract approach to decorating with pattern with its pressed-poppy duvet and West Elm’s reversible rugs favor more muted blooms.
Design studio Fettle revives Dorothy Draper’s gloriously extravagant vision for The Stoneleigh, with chintz doing much of the talking.
The whole ‘grandma’ floral as a fresh thing is antithetical, but it’s been happening, and chintz might just be its final boss. Ahead, 16 fancifully floral, chintz-inspired decor finds that evoke all the warm, fuzzy feelings of a trip to her house, minus the icky plastic coverings on the furniture.
