Think You Know Morris & Co.? These Never-Before-Seen Archive Patterns Just Became Ruggable Rugs
Previously undiscovered Morris sketches have left The Huntington’s archives 150 years later. Their next stop? The washing machine
One would hope that a sleeping beauty of 150-plus years could wake up to a very different world without having to change too much herself. Original charm intact, obviously, but perhaps a little better equipped for smartphones, AI, or, in this case, the washing machine. This is more or less what’s happened with Morris & Co.’s latest Ruggable collaboration, inspired by never-before-seen William Morris sketches recently uncovered in The Huntington Library archives.
Washable rugs didn’t exist in William’s day, but we’d wager the upper crust who adored his famous nature-inspired textiles and wallpapers would have been delighted by the option. Rooted in British folklore and medieval influences, the 26-piece collection takes those historic designs to much less precious places, from the dining room and bathroom to, à la Nancy Meyers, even the kitchen.
Now making their way off the page are Persian Scroll, an intricate, embroidery-like interweave of botanicals; Walthamstow, a swirl of honeysuckle, daisies, and acanthus leaves edged in checkerboard; and Wild Tulip & Vine, a winding dance of both. They span neutrals and cool blues to moodier burgundies – because what’s more groundbreaking than florals for fall? Perhaps letting a century-old pattern finally participate in a rowdy Tuesday wine night with friends.
Over a century later, the language of traditional folk art still feels fresh, grounding the scene of this equally nature-inclined dining room.
Known for pushing boundaries in his own day, William would probably approve. Ahead, our favorite untapped styles, finally getting the second life they deserve.
