Spring is a time when many of us find ourselves outdoors, basking in the brighter mornings and dimly lit evenings. 'At the risk of stating the obvious, the best thing you can do to bring spring to your porch is to add colorful plants,' says interior designer Lauren Conner. 'If you have existing evergreens in pots, you can fill the base in with seasonal annuals. And you get extra credit for elevating seasonal blooms on a pedestal or in a planter box.'
Soft furnishings will transform your porch, too, explains Lauren, just as much as all the usual spring decor. 'Add anything that can make a porch feel more like a room, including an indoor or outdoor rug, cushions, pillows, and even a lamp. Take it up a notch with an outdoor speaker, a candle, and a plant to repel mosquitoes. Hang a fresh flag, add a new doormat that is as wide as the door, and a basket to gather random package deliveries.'
'You can also give the door hardware a scrub, or better yet, a complete polish. Clean the lantern from a year’s worth of spider webs and bugs, and wash the windows to add sparkle. Finally, add a fresh coat of paint to the dog-scratched door, or paint a tongue and groove ceiling in the palest of hues to create a porch with blue sky, no matter the weather. We all may as well enjoy having an extra room in our house to enjoy what is arguably the prettiest season of the year!'
