Antique Shopping Tips
Whether you're attending a flea market to get all the fall feels, pumpkin drink in hand, or you are a seasoned shopper on the hunt for bargains, there are a few things worth knowing before you head out.
Firstly, vendors at vintage markets often only accept cash, and the same goes for the entrance fee. While you might bump into a few sellers who take credit cards, it's always worth being prepared and carrying an ample amount of cash just in case you stumble across something you truly love (and simply can't pass up). If you can, purchase your ticket before you arrive online to beat the lines and get to the goods straight away.
Come prepared, especially going into fall. Make sure you've packed all the essentials like an umbrella, a water bottle, and a tape measure (Amazon Basics Self-Locking Tape Measure is a good place to start) to ensure the armchair you've fallen in love with fits in your living room nook; bringing these staples will make your visit all the more successful. Comfortable shoes, a notebook and pen to jot down vendors' names or pieces you're on the hunt for, and snacks (if you're planning to spend all day there) are worth considering, too.
As well as coming prepared physically, ensure you're clued up on exactly what to look for (and what to avoid buying at an estate sale) so you don't regret your purchase or end up paying more for an item than it's worth. When shopping for vintage furniture, pay attention to the surface of the piece (scratches, stains, or amateur handiwork) before making a purchase. If you're still considering the piece, ask the seller if they'd take a lower price. If it has potential, reupholstering or reinventing a piece with a fresh coat of paint is more than possible, remember.
And, of course, look for all the markings of authenticity when browsing items like fine china, artwork, or ceramics to ensure you're not buying a knock-off version of an antique. Things like makers' marks, certain shapes, patterns, and glazes (when shopping for pottery and tableware), and signatures will help you identify the real deal from the inauthentic. Always buy from a trusted seller that's established, and if you can, look for provenance.
October is one of the best times of the year to shop for antiques. The temperature is crisp, the skies are blue, and markets and fairs are filled with characterful, patinated home decor to make your home as cozy and lived-in as it can be.
