Antiques and vintage fair shopping tips and essentials
It's important to arrive at antiques shows prepared. You might be used to online shopping, but this is a totally different experience. So, here are our tips for making sure you look like a pro – even if it's your first time at a fair!
Firstly, make sure you measure before you buy. And we're not just talking about the antique furniture that's piqued your interest – plan ahead by measuring the areas of your home you are considering for the piece. This way, you know what will or won't fit before you invest.
Different markets have different rules, so it's always useful to bring cash. A lot of dealers and sellers only accept cash, as do some of the fairs themselves for entry and tickets. Using cash is also a great way to stick to a budget if you are prone to overspending!
A step many people overlook, but that is one of the most important, you really need to come prepared for how much you plan to buy. If you are looking for large furniture items, make sure you're vehicle is big enough, or hire a van for the day. Some dealers will be able to arrange delivery for items, but it's worth checking ahead of time.
Don't forget to think about how you plan to carry all of your buys, even if you're just picking up small decor items. It's always a good idea to bring a foldable trolley or wagon, so you can pull your buys along with no fuss! This Collapsible Wagon Cart from Amazon is a great choice.
Whether you're searching for the most popular pieces to buy at an antique fair or you've been inspired by collectibles interior designers look out for when antique shopping, these fairs, shows, and markets are the best spots to find unique items. And if you're new to the world of buying old, experts will have plenty of tips on how to start an antiques collection.

I’ve worked in the interiors magazine industry for the past five years and joined Homes & Gardens at the beginning of 2024 as the Kitchens & Bathrooms editor. While I love every part of interior design, kitchens and bathrooms are some of the most exciting to design, conceptualize, and write about. There are so many trends, materials, colors, and playful decor elements to explore and experiment with.
