Antiques and vintage fair shopping tips and essentials

Antique and vintage fairs are a wonderful source of unique, characterful pieces at bargain prices that you won't see on the high street. From an antique Gustavian chest of drawers to a retro tableware set, you never know what you might find, and there’s a real thrill in spotting that perfect item for your home. However, the drawback is that there’s only a small window of opportunity, so to make sure you get the most out of your shopping experience, it’s best to go prepared.

When shopping at antique and vintage fairs, always bring some cash. While many dealers and vendors do offer card payments, it’s not guaranteed, plus entry is sometimes cash only at the gate. Some fairs offer lower prices for advance tickets, so it’s worth buying tickets ahead of time; that way, you can often beat the queues, too. Many fairs are held outdoors and will go ahead rain or shine, so be sure to come prepared with layers.

Antique and vintage fairs are fantastic places to pick up high-quality, handcrafted furniture at bargain prices, but make sure to measure up and note down room dimensions before you go to ensure pieces will fit - scale is very tricky to judge in a large expo center. There’s nothing worse than investing in a large piece and carting it home just to discover it’s too large, and there’s no way to return it either. Ensure to bring with you a good quality tape measure, such as this Amazon Basics Self-Locking Tape Measure to check dimensions on site, too.

Whether you’re looking for something for your own home or an investment piece to sell on, remember that quality is key, especially when it comes to furniture. Always get up close to the piece to assess whether it is sturdy and whether it has any damage. 'While the idea of restoring a piece is appealing, damaged furniture—whether it’s structural issues or poor craftsmanship—can be more trouble than it’s worth and you may damage it further if you're not a professional restorer,' says interior designer Sara Swabb, founder of Storie Collective. That said, don’t be put off by small blemishes or dirt or things like missing drawer handles, things like this can easily be fixed, the important thing is whether it has good sturdy ‘bones’. Pieces with an aged patina can be very sought after; in fact, they're some of the collectibles interior designers look out for when antique shopping, but things like wonky legs and woodworm are best avoided.

Artworks are also some of the most popular pieces to buy at an antique fair, but like furniture, these too can have pitfalls. If you're buying something inexpensive simply because you love the aesthetic, you needn't worry too much, but if you're looking at a high-ticket original, always buy from reputable dealers and find evidence of provenance. If the deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.

If you're hunting for a large item, always consider how you will transport your item back home. Some fairs do offer courier services, so check the website before your visit. If you're looking for small decorative items like ceramics and books, a sturdy, flat-bottomed bag or a foldable shopping trolley on wheels is ideal. Alternatively, for larger items, try a collapsible wagon cart.

If you’re interested in more than one piece on a stand, then it’s worth asking if the vendor can do a deal. Don’t forget, if you see something you love, don't hesitate, purchase it as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. If you walk away for five minutes, chances are it will have been snapped up.
