White is no longer the go-to color in small kitchens. Instead, designers are increasingly gravitating towards warmer, more characterful shades that showcase a bit more style and personality.

And this year's small kitchen trends are truly showcasing that shift. From softer spaces and unexpected hues emerging, 2026's small kitchen color trends are proving a feast for the eyes.

Choosing the right color for your small kitchen is a big decision, and while we never recommend simply following trends, they can be a great source of inspiration, especially if you want to create a space that feels unique and considered. These are the six that designers are most excited about this year.

1. Deep Blue Hues

We're seeing a huge return to shades of blue in 2026, particularly in small spaces in need of color. And while so many tones feel increasingly stylish this year, it's the deeper hues that are making their way into small kitchens.

'Blues are currently dominating small kitchen trends. Saturated hues bring depth to a compact space. We love to create high contrast between cabinetry and wall color,' says Michelle Vassallo of MV Architects in Washington, DC.

'We've previously paired Farrow & Ball De Nimes cabinetry with Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace painted walls. This high contrast makes the room feel intentionally bespoke rather than cramped.

2. Muted Greens

Green is one of those colors that almost acts as a neutral, and its muted hues feel particularly elevated in 2026. It's not just about the color itself, but the colors and materials you pair it with in a small scheme, too.

'For small kitchens, we’re seeing muted greens paired with warm whites and natural wood tones continue to gain popularity because they create a fresh, organic look while still helping the space feel calm and open,' says Emily Kantz, Color Marketing Manager at Sherwin-Williams.

'Shades like Sea Salt SW 6204 and Evergreen Fog SW 9130 work especially well in smaller kitchens because they bring in a nature-inspired softness without overwhelming the room. Homeowners are also gravitating toward earthy green-and-cream combinations because they feel warm, welcoming, and timeless.'

3. Wood Tones and Earthy Hues

Offering a reprieve from the cool neutrals of past years, small kitchens in 2026 are embracing natural wood and earth tones for a warmer take on a classic. It feels timeless, yet has more depth than drenching a space in white.

'In recent months, homeowners have been gravitating to warmer, softer materials that feel more connected to nature, rather than overly sleek or sterile ones,' says Natalie Rebuck, Principal Designer at Re: Design Architects, who highlights it as an alternative to whites and grays that have dominated in the past.

'This includes wood tones and earthy colors, such as sage greens, terracotta tones, warm taupes, and mushroom shades. I’m also seeing more options and interest in wooden cabinetry, such as white oak, and richer medium wood tones, to again, help give more warmth and depth to the space.'

4. Rich, Moody Color Palettes

The appetite for decorating with moody colors is going nowhere this year, and it's particularly gaining ground in small kitchens as a way to embrace smaller proportions rather than fight them.

'I think we’re going to see small kitchens become dramatically moodier and more layered in 2026. Rather than trying to make compact spaces disappear with all-white palettes, we are leaning into creating kitchens that feel intimate, collected, and full of personality,' explains interior designer Jennifer Davis.

'I expect rich, nature-inspired tones to dominate. Deep olive greens, earthy teals, clay browns, and aged aubergine tones paired with softer organic neutrals. We’re also seeing a strong movement toward tonal layering rather than high contrast. For example, a muted olive cabinet paired with a warm veined stone and unlacquered brass feels incredibly elevated and timeless in a smaller footprint.'

5. Chocolate Brown

The appeal of deeper tones is a clear trend this year in small kitchens, with rich, chocolatey browns proving to be an enduringly popular color choice. It's dark and immersive, yet still has warm undertones that allow the hue to feel inviting.

'We’ve seen browns gaining traction and people opting for them over grays and charcoals. Chocolatey hues – like Stone Brown 2112-30 and Bittersweet Chocolate 2114-10 – bring a softer approach to deep color,' says Arianna Barone, Color Marketing Manager at Benjamin Moore, noting that your cabinets are the best place to start.

'These colors pair beautifully with creamy hues, dove grays, brass hardware, and warmly veined marbles for a sophisticated but still warm and welcoming look. If you are hesitant to go all in and paint the uppers and lowers in a deeper or more playful hue, consider just doing the lowers,' she suggests.

6. Mediterranean-Inspired Palettes

European style has become a source of inspiration, especially in kitchens of every size, as of late. But color really is the focus in this year's small kitchen trends, with warm, Mediterranean palettes proving more coveted than ever.

'We also see more organic, sun-soaked hues finding their place in the home. Terracotta, mustards, and olives all have an inherent ease and comfort to them that make them an ideal option for kitchens,' says Arianna.

'Colors like Patina 1195 and Spiced Apple Cider 1201 would pair beautifully with warm wood tones, clay colors, and subtle pops of navy. While colors like Da Vinci’s Canvas 208, Chopped Dill 496, and Ivy Lane 523 bring a lived-in, natural feeling to the space,' she suggests.

'The biggest shift overall is that people are becoming less afraid of color in small spaces. A smaller kitchen actually permits you to be bolder and more expressive because the scale naturally creates intimacy,' summarises Jennifer of this year's small kitchen color trends.

'When done thoughtfully, deeper or more saturated tones can make a compact kitchen feel incredibly custom, sophisticated, and memorable.'
