The holiday season is the most wonderful time of the year. But it can also be one of the most stressful times of the year for homeowners. You see, in the chilly months, your home is a warm, cozy sanctuary not only for you and your family–but also for unwanted guests like roaches. To help get ahead on this common seasonal plight, we reached out to Christyn Williams, a single mom of three and the creator behind Where We're Planted–a platform that inspires you to create a home you love through budget-friendly renovation and interior design.

Just in time for hosting season, she's sharing her best tips to help mitigate pests–while still keeping the festive spirit alive in your home.

'Nothing kills a cozy vibe faster than something running across your floor that shouldn’t be there,' Williams says. 'Roaches aren't just gross; they can damage belongings, contaminate food areas, and multiply fast. Keeping your home protected is just as important as making it beautiful, and you don't want to wait for signs of roaches to start prevention.'

So, where should you be on the lookout for pests? 'The top spaces roaches love are the kitchen, dining room, bathroom, and laundry room,' she explains. 'To protect these spaces, I recommend sealing small cracks and leaks, keeping food sealed and counters wiped, and using a highly-effective bait such as Combat. I always place bait stations in hidden areas where roaches travel, like under sinks, behind appliances, and near drains.'

'Combat® Bait works fast, it's affordable, and it's easy to use – just set up the bait stations and it starts working to protect your home against roaches,' she says. 'As a single mom who doesn't have time for constant maintenance, I love that it gives long-lasting protection with very little effort from me.'

She also described how the bait is designed to attract roaches so they take it back to the nest, which eliminates them at the source–instead of just killing the ones you see. It's a simple swap that's well worth it.

In addition to her trusted bait stations, Williams shared other steps to help winter-proof your home against both roaches and the elements.

'Make sure you check weather stripping around doors and windows, as well as insulate gaps around plumbing pipes before the cold weather hits,' she advises. 'It's also the perfect time to clean hidden areas like storage rooms, baseboards, and behind appliances, so there are no areas for roaches to hide.'
