As we hit the first warm stretch of the year and windows stay open later, that sudden jump from a whisper to an explosion from your TV can start testing your neighbors' patience as well as being quite a nuisance when viewing.
With precise, well-engineered sound balance, the Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar brought the fix that I have long waited for. Loud action scenes are delivered with impact without blasting out disproportionately loudly, and when transitioning to quiet dialogue, every sound remains clear without you having to constantly be on the remote and turning the volume up and down.
It is one of many reasons why the Bose Smart Ultra is one of the best soundbars we've tested at Homes & Gardens, as its realistic sound and stylish design make it a transformative upgrade for a home entertainment setup that needs to remain considerate of those around.

The Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar removes the need to frantically adjust the volume every time a scene becomes too loud or quiet with its masterful sound balance – packaged into a polished, sophisticated design. Read more in my full Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar review.
I live in a house of four and have elderly neighbors, so audio becoming too loud is more than a nuisance – it can disturb the peace of those around me. I haven't soundproofed my room, so if an explosion on-screen suddenly bellows through my walls, it's a panic moment as I have to quickly find my TV remote to turn it down.
This anxiety is peaking now that the weather is getting warmer and I'm opening my windows more. I would prefer not to receive a justifiably angry note through the door every time I watch a blockbuster.
Regardless of neighbors, having to feel like the sound can take you by surprise takes away from the experience, and it is not how you create the ideal movie room environment.
Once the movie starts, you should only be reaching for the remote to pause the TV for breaks or snacks, not during points of action and intrigue where you want to feel the most immersed, or during tense, hushed dialogue.

Why This Soundbar Is the Perfect Fix
I have spent more than 50 hours testing 12 soundbars, and the Bose Smart Ultra's well-balanced audio and realistic soundstage stands out above the rest.
Immediately after setting up and running the Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar with my set testing list of films, music, and TV shows that I vet these devices with, I noticed its precisely balanced audio.
I was able to catch subtle details that usually get lost on more affordable soundbars. Even when the energy ramped up during action sequences, the audio stayed contained as the loud moments never overshot, and those quiet, intricate details remained perfectly sharp.
The internal hardware creates a pleasant and airy sound – one that still carries depth and impact, but with bass that never overpowers. It also has AI dialogue enhancement, which prevents quiet voices from becoming inaudible, meaning I don't have to raise the volume every time I want to hear a character whisper or when I'm trying to avoid disturbing my partner's peace late at night.
While the Sonos Arc Ultra has stronger bass, and the Samsung HW-Q990F has a 'fuller' sound, the Bose Smart Ultra sounds more precise and delicate.
The true luxury here isn't just the audio quality; it’s no longer having to fumble for the remote after you press play. Now that the season of open windows is here, I can finally finish a movie without worrying about disturbing anyone else or constantly being on volume patrol.
The Bose Smart Ultra is available for $999 at Bose.
More to Shop
Out of every soundbar we've tested, the Bose Smart Ultra solves the 'whisper-to-explosion' struggle more effectively than any other to date. It allows you to feel the full impact of the TV show or movie that you're watching without one loud moment rattling your ears or disturbing neighbors.
But to consider your options further, here are six more winners from our soundbar tests to suit every budget.
All prices were correct at the time of publication.
This soundbar, subwoofer and dual rear speaker setup may take up more space, but offers greater sound customization if you want to reduce the shock of loud booms. You can adjust the subwoofer volume and the bass EQ settings across all speakers, to make sure it's tailored to your space.

It's expensive, but no sound system sounded better on test than the Samsung HW-Q990F, while having endlessly useful sound settings to avoid loud surprises or inaudible quiet dialogue.

The Fire TV Soundbar Plus may not sound as impactful or detailed as the Bose, but because its hardware is limited compared to the premium alternatives above, the dynamic range is relatively small, meaning it never goes too loud or too quiet compared to the baseline volume.

The Yamaha True X Bar 50A has a wireless subwoofer, so if you're ever watching movies late at night and want to avoid surprising loudness, you can simply turn it off. I tested the soundbar by itself, and it still sounds rich and full-bodied without the additional subwoofer, especially at this price.

The Sonos Ray doesn't have the sound balance you'll find in the other soundbars mentioned above. It's a budget-friendly option, meaning it never really goes that loud, so you won't have to worry about deep bass vibrating through your walls and disturbing neighbors or family members.

If you're considering investing in the Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the Sonos Arc Ultra. Its 14 built-in speakers deliver a more impressive soundstage across the board, with bass, treble, and dialogue equalizer settings if you need to make any adjustments.
