What can one expect from the former Malibu home of legendary musician Frank Zappa? In this case, the answer is a distinctly global take on California living, with Balinese wood, Moroccan-inspired architecture, and Pacific views from almost every corner.

Perched along 84 feet of ocean-bluff frontage in Malibu’s coveted Point Dume enclave, the 1.1-acre estate has come to market for $28.5 million. However, to understand its influence as one of the world's best homes today, one must look back at its creative past.

Gail Zappa, Frank Zappa’s wife and trustee of the Zappa Family Trust, originally acquired the home and continued to oversee its legacy following the musician’s death in 1993. During her ownership, she brought together handcrafted materials from her travels, including Balinese wood and imported fireplace stone, giving the residence much of its character.

Screenwriter Melissa Mathison purchased the property from Gail in 2005, and developer Sonny Astani purchased it in 2013. Astani undertook a nearly two-year restoration, adding a pool, spa, and lily pond while retaining important details from the Zappa era, including a Moroccan-inspired courtyard and floor mosaic attributed to Frank himself.

Today, the residence has the feel of a modern Moroccan villa, approached through private Balinese gates. It combines Spanish revival craftsmanship and Moorish charm with Californian style.

Inside, cathedral ceilings with exposed timber beams define the main living spaces, while walls of glass open directly onto Pacific views.

A sunken conversation pit anchors the living room, where the Zappa serpent mosaic provides a memorable focal point. The interiors, completed by the team behind Leanne Ford, take a more restrained approach to the home's architectural details.

Textural plaster walls, handcrafted teak, and wide-plank oak floors sit alongside zellij tilework and keyhole archways, allowing the Moorish influences to remain present without overwhelming the space.

The colorful kitchen follows the same understated direction, with wood cabinetry and clean stone surfaces creating a practical space that's filled with light.

Four bedrooms are located on the main level, while a more private primary suite offers separation from the rest of the house.

Above the main residence is a private ocean-view home office, while separate guest or staff quarters add flexibility for visitors, because this is the ultimate party house, after all.

Outside, the property makes the most of its unusually generous bluff-top setting. A Moorish fountain flows into a spa beside a lily pond, while a handmade-tile pool sits within the side garden. Citrus, peach, plum, and apple trees line the private drive, which provides parking for more than a dozen vehicles and includes a separate service entrance.

For all the home's global artistry, its ultimate secret lies at the edge of the bluff. Beyond the oceanfront lawn, deeded access and highly coveted Riviera III beach keys unlock Little Dume, Malibu’s most private and iconic stretch of sand. Lily Harfouche and Chris Cortazzo of Compass hold the listing.
