What can one expect from the former Malibu home of legendary musician Frank Zappa? In this case, the answer is a distinctly global take on California living, with Balinese wood, Moroccan-inspired architecture, and Pacific views from almost every corner.
Perched along 84 feet of ocean-bluff frontage in Malibu’s coveted Point Dume enclave, the 1.1-acre estate has come to market for $28.5 million. However, to understand its influence as one of the world's best homes today, one must look back at its creative past.
Gail Zappa, Frank Zappa’s wife and trustee of the Zappa Family Trust, originally acquired the home and continued to oversee its legacy following the musician’s death in 1993. During her ownership, she brought together handcrafted materials from her travels, including Balinese wood and imported fireplace stone, giving the residence much of its character.
Screenwriter Melissa Mathison purchased the property from Gail in 2005, and developer Sonny Astani purchased it in 2013. Astani undertook a nearly two-year restoration, adding a pool, spa, and lily pond while retaining important details from the Zappa era, including a Moroccan-inspired courtyard and floor mosaic attributed to Frank himself.
