Patrick and Brittany Mahomes' estate in Belton, Missouri, has never felt traditional. However, while its interiors always felt architecturally modern and sleekly designed, the patio is where you should be taking notes for 2027.

On their turf-grid patio, large-format concrete pavers are arranged in a geometric layout separated by rows of green. The result is incredibly high-contrast. It pairs beautifully with the home's glass facade and the surrounding grounds, laying the groundwork for what is set to be a leading hardscaping trend in 2027.

'The turf-grid layout pays homage to a significant evolution in how we approach modern garden and landscape design,' says Tenielle Jordison, Gardens Content Editor at Homes & Gardens, who always has her eye on upcoming garden trends.

'For years, high-end patios have relied on monolithic slabs of stone or concrete, which often felt cold and visually detached from the lawn. However, by interrupting solid pavers with grass, Patrick and Brittany have demonstrated how to soften heavy structural elements while keeping a contemporary edge.'

Alongside its regimented, architectural nature, Tenielle explains that the 'grass-ribbon technique' will elevate this aesthetic further for the year ahead.

'As we look toward 2027, this same grass-ribbon technique will surely define luxury outdoor spaces. Beyond its graphic aesthetic, the design provides distinct practical benefits, improving natural water drainage and reducing surface heat retention compared to traditional stone,' she says.

'It offers a tailored, resort-level framework that brings the feeling of modern architecture outdoors. It's a reminder of just how stunning concrete can be.'

While Patrick and Brittany have acres to experiment with, their look is just as replicable in small gardens. In such compact spaces, the secret is adjusting the proportion of paver to greenery.

Using fewer, larger-format slabs framed by tight turf ribbons will draw your eye outward along the diagonal lines. This should trick the eye into perceiving more space while maintaining the same sleek feeling as their estate.

No matter your thoughts on such a regimented design, one thing is clear – Patrick Mahomes just set the new gold standard for high-end patio hardscaping.
