This ancient spiritual ritual is a natural way to renew your home – we spotted Bella Hadid practicing it in her living room
Spiritual wellness experts say this practice allows you to release 'emotional clutter' and refocus on what you want from your home

Alongside being a supermodel, Bella Hadid has established herself as quite the scent expert, not least thanks to her natural fragrance brand, Orebella. Bella's label focuses on essential oils and skin parfums, but it was still unsurprising to see her experimenting with a different type of scent, sage, in her living room.
Sage's scent is complex and multi-layered, with herbal and earthy notes, but as wellness experts explain, there's more to this ritual than its scent. Cleansing a house with sage is one of the most powerful things you can do to transform the aura of your living space, and we're going to take a cue from anybody, it's Bella.
'Burning sage is an ancient spiritual practice that’s been used across various cultures to clear negative energy and create a more grounded, peaceful environment,' comments Joanne Jones, a Spiritual Wellness expert and Founder of Trusted Psychics.
'While its roots are sacred and culturally significant – especially among Indigenous peoples of North America – sage burning has also found a place in today’s spiritual wellness routines, particularly for those seeking emotional clarity or energy renewal at home.'

With the likes of Bella Hadid burning sage, it's understandable why people may be influenced to do so today. However, as Joanne explains, this ritual has already lived on for centuries. So why has it prolonged through the centuries?
'Spiritually, sage is often viewed as a natural purifier. When burned, it’s thought to disperse stagnant or heavy energy in a space, making it especially useful during life transitions, after tension or illness, or simply when a home feels a bit “off,” and many people who incorporate sage into their routine say their home feels noticeably lighter and more open afterwards,' she says.
'There’s also a psychological release that comes with the ritual – it symbolically allows you to let go of emotional clutter and refocus on what you want to invite in.'

As we grow more aware of how to create good Feng Shui in our homes, rituals like burning sage are unlikely to lose momentum. Alongside cleansing our air, Joanne adds that this practice has therapeutic qualities, too.
'There’s something primal and comforting about it. Fire and scent have always played a role in human ritual, so watching the smoke drift through the air and breathing in that earthy fragrance can have a powerful calming effect,' she says.
'It’s less about the “magic” of the plant and more about the space the ritual creates – a chance to reflect, reset, and come back to yourself.'
We're never not inspired by Bella Hadid, but this could be her most calming practice to date. Whether your home is new or not, it will thank you for following her example.
