Celebrity stylist Jamie Mizrahi wanted her children's playroom to be a space for play and study – it's a masterclass in social seating and stylish storage
The fashion stylist Jamie Mizrahi transformed her children's playroom with Crate & Kids – the focus on conversation & organization makes for an innovative space
Stylist Jamie Mizrahi is well-versed in dressing some of the world's best-known celebrities, but when it came to adorning her home she needed some support.
To design her children's playroom, Mizrahi turned to the Crate & Kids Design Desk. The result is stunning. True to Mizrahi's vision, the playroom is full of space to hang out and equipped with proper storage to keep everything in its rightful place. The way it has been designed in distinct sections, it almost reads as three separate rooms. With corners for play, family movie nights, sleepovers, and studying, it will grow with her children. Going beyond just function, the red, navy, and white color scheme with touches of rattan ground and elevate the space. It's clearly designed for kids, but equally enjoyable for adults.
The organized kid's room checks all of Mom's boxes. 'We wanted to design the space to be a multipurpose room, somewhere the kids could play and study, while still being a great room for the whole family to hang out and watch a movie,' Jamie Mizrahi tells Homes & Gardens exclusively. She continues, 'The Design Desk team helped us choose all the right products that matched the aesthetic we wanted. The Crate & Barrel Oceanside Sectional has been perfect for all of our movie nights. The storage we’ve built into the room has been beyond helpful - the Ever Bookcase and Desks from Crate & Kids - help keep all the dinosaurs and Star Wars toys organized.'
My favorite corner in the playroom is the 'movie room' section. Not only has Mizrahi outfitted the media center with cherry red built-in shelves to store films and books fashionably, but the seating also seems perfectly arranged for maximum enjoyment. The rectangular set up of the sectional flanked by an armchair creates lots of space for cuddling as a family, while making it possible for rambunctious children to move throughout. As the kids get older, it will be the best spot for gathering for snacks and video games with friends.
The next section puts the 'fun' in functional: it's a small home office. Two desks sit in the corner, allowing a parent to keep a watchful eye over multiple children during homework time. Surrounding shelves provide more storage room for toys (and maybe office supplies as her children get older!). Though it's playful enough for young children to enjoy, it's also easy to see how they could age up into this space as they spend more time there writing high school essays and completing math equations.
A day bed with a play tent beneath the window creates the ideal spot for hosting sleepovers or cuddling with family. This section echoes the same theme seen throughout the room, of pairing enjoyment and functionality with good design.

The best playroom storage is essential for creating a children's space just as stylish as Jamie Mizrahi's. Start simple with a few rattan bins. Depending on the shape or size of your space, these baskets can be used alone or in shelves to store books and toys. The elevated design adds instant sophistication to a space even for the youngest children.
