This luminous gold was Sherwin-Williams' most unpopular color until they collaborated with Dapper Dan – now it feels unrecognizable

When it comes to paint colors, there are some that don't get as much love as they should. Gold paint is perhaps among the lesser-used colors; however, Dapper Dan set out to change that.

The fashion designer (who also happens to be on the Met Gala host committee) took his stylish sensibilities to the world of interiors via his collaboration with Sherwin-Williams: a paint color called Kingdom Gold SW 6698 (137-C5).

The color is fascinating for many reasons: it's Sherwin-Williams least tinted shade, meaning it has green undertones that lead to a bronze appearance, making it a statement paint color, to say the least, and makes the case for decorating with gold.

A major proponent of individual style, having got his start with streetwear in Harlem in the 1980s, Dapper Dan says that he wanted to embrace an unexpected shade, and show people that unique shades can be more versatile than you might think.

'As Creative Director of The Loneliest Color, I’m focused on championing the potential of what was once the least popular color in order to celebrate the magic of what it can become when given a chance in the spotlight.'

He continues,: 'Something I’ve learned throughout my career is the power of staying true to our individuality and not conforming to what’s agreeable,' he states. 'In design and fashion, every color has the potential to tell a story, change perspectives, and inspire us—it’s about staying present so you can discover, or sometimes rediscover, beauty in places you may have initially overlooked.'

Naturally, Dapper Dan took this color and used it to make wearable pieces, and Sherwin-Williams sourced some complementary shades to fit into the pieces, including gray, purple, navy, and red. The hues can also be used as an inspiration for those who want to pair gold paint with colorful accessories.

'With our least-tinted color, we’re taking something that’s overlooked, unknown, and on the fringes, and bringing it out of the shadows in a new and unexpected way – through fashion and painted on a wall – and it reveals how beautiful an often-undervalued thing can be,' explains Sue Wadden, the director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams. If anyone can convince us to experiment with this shade, it's Dapper Dan. Somehow, it's never felt so fashionable.
