'Rich, Inviting, and a Little Unexpected' – Why Sherwin-Williams Pewter Green Remains Designers' Go-To Moody Paint Color
A grounding green-meets-gray, Pewter Green is a timeless, deeply luxurious hue that translates in any setting
Taking its name from antique silverware, Sherwin-Williams Pewter Green fuses earthy forest green and aged gray into one timelessly moody hue.
Best described as a grounding gray-meets-green, Pewter Green might've been on the market for over twenty years, but it's been the go-to dark green paint in the design world since 2020.
Today, Pewter Green by Sherwin-Williams is still the go-to paint choice for every space in need of a little luxury and richness. 'While it draws inspiration from nature, it feels refined rather than overly rustic, making it a versatile choice across a variety of design styles,' explains Emily Kantz, Color Marketing Manager at Sherwin-Williams. 'Depending on the lighting, Pewter Green can read as a deep green, soft olive, or moody neutral, creating depth and warmth while maintaining a timeless appeal.'
Kelsey McGregor combined Sherwin-Williams' Pewter Green with Ripe Olive for a rich, heritage effect.
'Pewter Green lends itself beautifully to a layered, collected aesthetic,' explains interior designer Kelsey McGregor, founder of Kelsey Leigh Design Co. 'It works especially well with the cottagecore approach to decorating, where color-drenching and character-rich details take center stage. I love pairing it with patterned curtains, floral textiles, vintage artwork, and pieces that feel timeworn and collected over time.'
It makes sense then that the moody green hue worked so well in the farmhouse kitchen pictured above. 'This project dates back to 2018, when black and white painted cabinetry was dominating kitchen design,' explains Kelsey. 'We wanted to push beyond those expected choices and try something that felt fresh while still being timeless. I had originally been inspired by a beautiful green-painted closet island I had seen and wondered what that color could look like on a much larger scale. Pewter Green felt like the perfect opportunity to bring that idea into a full kitchen, creating a space that felt rich, inviting, and a little unexpected at the time.'
'Pewter Green looks especially beautiful alongside natural wood tones and warm brass finishes,' adds Kelsey. 'Green and red/orange sit opposite one another on the color wheel, which creates a natural harmony between the paint color and the warmth of wood. I particularly love it paired with Minwax Weathered Oak stain on white oak. Kelsey suggests, 'Rusty reds and deep aubergine or plum tones can create a striking contrast while still feeling sophisticated, such as Sherwin-Williams Dark Auburn.'
Sarah Elizabeth Belleau color-drenched this rustic mudroom in Sherwin-Williams Pewter Green.
'I wanted a color that felt moody, timeless, and sophisticated while still being practical for a hardworking family space,' explains Sarah Elizabeth Belleau, founder of Elizabeth Lane Interiors, on the green mudroom pictured above. 'Pewter Green has beautiful gray undertones that give it depth and softness, creating a cozy, elevated feel rather than reading overly bold. As a mudroom that sees plenty of daily traffic from my children, I also loved that it would gracefully hide the inevitable dirt, scuffs, and everyday wear while still feeling beautiful and intentional.'

Naming the colors that go with dark green, Elizabeth says, 'Pewter Green works best when layered with natural textures and warm accents. I love pairing it with unlacquered or aged brass fixtures, woven baskets, natural wood tones, linen textiles, and an earthy, textured rug. These organic elements soften the richness of the paint color and create a space that feels warm, inviting, and collected.'
'Pewter Green pairs beautifully with warm neutrals such as cream, ivory, taupe, and camel,' adds Elizabeth. 'It also complements natural materials like white oak, walnut, rattan, and stone. For metals, brass and bronze bring warmth and contrast, while black accents create a more dramatic, modern look. The versatility of Pewter Green is what makes it so timeless. It can feel traditional, modern, or organic depending on the materials layered alongside it.'
Pewter Green brings a rich depth and moodiness to this classic kitchen.
'We selected Pewter Green because our client expressed an interest in green cabinetry,' Katilyn of Ainslie Design Studio explains, referring to the moody kitchen pictured above. 'After evaluating the overall style of her condo and taking inventory of the existing décor, we noticed a moodier, more sophisticated aesthetic throughout the space. The dark hardwood flooring further reinforced this direction.'
'With these elements in mind, we felt Pewter Green would be an ideal choice. Its gray undertones create a muted, refined green that complements darker finishes without overwhelming the room. Rather than making the cabinetry a focal point, our goal was for it to feel like a seamless extension of the condo’s design.'
'Pewter Green SW 6208 works beautifully as both a statement color and a supporting neutral,' agrees Emily. 'It can add character to cabinetry, kitchen islands, built-ins, powder rooms, and accent walls, while also creating a cozy, enveloping feel when used throughout an entire room.'
'The color pairs especially well with natural materials such as warm wood tones, stone, linen, leather, and woven textures, helping to create spaces that feel layered, inviting, and connected to nature,' adds Emily. 'Homeowners can also incorporate brass or matte black finishes to further elevate the look.'
